  • So the G255 arrived today, and I did not hesitate to get it out of the box and check it out. I bought this one (not a freebie) for the chainsaw carvings I am getting into more of late.

    I just got mine in today. $101.50 people. 100 bucks plus some shipping for this saw. Construction looks good, not magnesium like my G444 but I'll bet it'll be just fine. First impressions are great. It already seems to have a lot more power than my Echo CS-370, and this is during break in. The Echo btw I spent almost $300 for and thought THAT was a deal, so I'm quite pleased. Oh I also bought a Farmertec HS-81 hedge trimmer. About $125 during FT's Black Friday sale. There are no videos of this one on YT but I can tell you this much, it's the real deal. Build quality is excellent. Power is much more than enough for it's purpose, and the same unit from Stihl would cost me at least $400 more.
    I feel kind of elitist about Farmertec I must admit. It's like knowing where I can buy a Ferrari for brand new for less than half the price, because it says Furrari instead.:)

      @DIYwithUncleCy  5 років тому

      This is true but I use the G255 as my upper medium saw in chainsaw carving and it has performed just as well as the MS250s I have had in the past, I think it worth the $100. That being said if you are used to taking your saw to someone to be fixed on the occasion it does break, then its better to spend the extra $100 because a stihl dealer won't touch this saw.

  • @Slane583

    My MS251 actually has the twist on cartridge filter like the bigger saws. But it is also the spiritual successor to the MS250 so it's all part of the redesign I'm guessing. I think I've had it for about two or three years so far and it's been great. I have no problems starting it each summer, it gets a clean down before use, and it only gets 91 octane ethanol-free gas & high-quality 2-Smoke mix. Though I have been pondering on trying a gallon of the TC-W3 outboard oil they have at Wally World. It seems to have a lot of good reviews about how good it is. I've also been wanting to try Stihl's own "Bio-Degradable" bar oil since it's thinner and the MS251 has a low flow oil pump for the bar. :)

    • @DIYwithUncleCy
      @DIYwithUncleCy  5 років тому

      Yes the 251 saw a lot of advances over the 250. It is a great saw (kinda jealous I don't have one in my collection LOL)
      In all of my carving saws I run Canola oil. Keeps the black nasties off the carving and is both better for the environment and for me. Did a bit of snooping on the chainsaw forums before deciding to try it. This saw will never see anything but. Canola oil is one of the main ingredients in the Stihl "Bio-Degradeable" oil.

    • @Slane583
      @Slane583 5 років тому

      @@DIYwithUncleCy That's nice to know, thanks. I'll have to give it a try and see how well it works for bucking up firewood. It'll be a cheaper alternative to the biodegradable stuff Stihl offers, which my local dealers might not even have in stock. If you ever add a 251 to your collection it'll run you about $370 with the 18" bar, that's what it cost me. I've been running Stihl's own Rapid-Super chain on it and it just eats wood like a fat German kid does chocolate bars. It's the most aggressive chain they offer in .325 pitch and for smaller saws.
      As for your thoughts on the fuel caps. The MS250 still had the older screw-on caps, the MS251 has the newer quick caps on it. So far I like those better than then older caps, much easier to get off. They don't need any persuading. I only know because my first choice was the MS250, I don't go for it because the dealer didn't have any in stock and the owner wasn't in. So the young fellow behind the counter didn't know about Stihl's deal for the 250 at the time that knocked a few dollars off. Which is what enticed me to saw shop in the first place. I hope to add my grandfather's old Pioneer Farm Saw into my collection someday. :)

    • @michaelremski8295
      @michaelremski8295 5 років тому

      @Slane583 I'm going to agree wholeheartedly with you on the 251 and the Stihl RS chain (the Stihl RM chain is okay, but not great). When I picked up mine the dealer had 250s and 251s in the same configuration. Both are same Stihl grade (Homeowner vs Farm/Ranch or Pro), dealer said "MS250 is old style, MS251 is new style" as the biggest difference. Toolless caps vs screw, slightly different bars, better anti-vibe on the 251. 251 may run a little leaner (EPA) but mine starts easily as long as you follow the instructions (full choke until first pop, then half choke/starting position); I mention this because reading reviews some folks seem to have trouble. On the TC-W3 outboard oil, I've seen lots of stuff "don't do it", the manual even says not to. The major reason is TCW is formulated for different temperature range (water cooled) than chainsaw mix (air-cooled 2 strokes). I think the 16 inch bar (about 14 inch cut) is a tiny bit better balance than the 18 inch.

    • @Slane583
      @Slane583 5 років тому

      @@michaelremski8295 My MS251's chain cut nicely for what it was and being low kickback. My friend ended up buying my Rapid-Super chain for me as payment for helping clear his back property of bad trees. I thought the saw cut decently before but once I put the RS on and went for the same piece of wood it just went. After that, I made my mind up to just stick with the RS chain when I need more in the future. It wasn't all that expensive and it cuts like crazy. As for starting, I followed the instructions on mine. Put it to full choke, pulled until it got a pop, shut off choke and pulled some more. It starts every time. I'd give it a light burp of the throttle to get some juices flowing and then let it idle while I walk after the safety was reengaged. I have also added more chainsaws to my collection since I bought the MS251. A couple run ok but need tlc, some don't run and need a rebuild. So I started at 1 saw and now I'm at 5. :)

    I bought one of these saws and there seems to be a problem with which bar and chain are for this saw according to the details on the farmer tec website it takes a 3/8 LP , .050 but on the box the saw came in tells you that it takes a .325 .063 chain but I ordered 3/8 LP , .050 bar and chain for the saw but I am afraid to run it on this as it might rip the sprocket out of the saw with it being the wrong chain and bar ??

    Did huztl do the same with you that they did with me? They charged me $20 to ship the bar and blade and stuck them in the box with my g372 that had free shipping. Plus, if you order two bars and blades they charge $40 for shipping. They could rethink that policy.

    • @DIYwithUncleCy
      @DIYwithUncleCy  5 років тому +1

      See I take a bit of a different mindset about it. They charged 10.39 for shipping the bar and chain, and yes it was in the box with the saw. However if they had shipped the saw alone and charged me it would have been $50+ bucks, so I look at it as 10 dollar shipping for the saw. I do see where your coming from though. It would be easy for them to say free shipping if you order the bar and chain with the saw. But when ya think about it they sell them so inexpensively it just doesn't seem to me that big of a deal.
      I did order 2 bars and chains (no saws once) and shipping was almost 50 bucks However it was a 25 inch and 28 inch bar with a chain for each total was 83.06. I would have a hard time finding an american source for one of those for that price for the bar alone.

    • @hosocat1410
      @hosocat1410 5 років тому

      @@DIYwithUncleCy yeah. I don't disagree. Good deals even if you have to pay some shipping. But I think they'd sell a ton more chains if they gave free shipping on bars and chains with a chainsaw purchase.
