    Netflix didn't know what they had. Had they started campaigning a month earlier this could've been a real threat to win the Best Picture Oscar - and Kammerer would have gotten into Best Actor.

      @@mimamo As a German, I couldn't agree less with you two :D German films are rubbish most of the time because of the way our financing for movies works, there are only a few exceptions with films that don't suck, namely when they are made by one of the few well-established directors or when they're financed by someone else (Netflix). We have as many talents as anyone else, but our film industry truly sucks, that's why many German filmmakers, editors, set designers etc. go to Hollywood. It is different, of course, in the UK, you guys actually put money into good movie ideas. I'm afraid "All Quiet" stays a beautiful exception on our side lol :D

    This is an adaption of the famous book by Erich Maria Remarque and not a remake of other movies, for those not knowing. The author gained worldwide fame for it back in his day. It is an all time classic about the horrors of war and how the youth got wasted away in what in Germany is called "die Urkatastrophe des 20. Jahrhunderts" (the first catastrophy of the 20th century) aka the First World War.
    The German title is "Im Westen nichts Neues" (Literally: "Nothing new in the West" aka "no news from the West") translated into "All quiet on the Western Front."
    I must say it is beautiful to see that this movie won today and then in the UK of all places. Considering that Germany was the enemy in two world wars.
    But that is what makes literature and movies so great. Great stories can unite.
    And one should never forget what happened in this horrible war and the one which sadly followed it.

    I cried so hard watching this film. It was one of the most difficult, beautiful in memory. It will def stay with me forever and should be a must-watch for every human being above 17. Through the war in Ukraine, I totally understand that this film has the relevance and weight to win the Oscar for Best Picture, too. Having said that, it is EEAAO who should have won and should win all prizes. AQOTWF is awesome and will count to the very best until the end of times, but it was a novel adaptation, there are so many brilliant war films. EEAAO is somehting NEW, striking and a bold experiment in film-making that should be rewarded for it. It is not favored by the complex existential themes, to which few people have access to, and the comedy aspect is a challeging one, bc people tend to see only drama as "quality", so I can understand why so many people would regard those aspects to as negatives and favor this one. 2022 was a golden year for cinema, that's the only certainty!

      @Aldo Flores Bonilla para nada, comenzando con que no tiene el apoyo de los actores que es el bloque mayor de votantes en la academia. Parasite fue la ganadora del SAG, All Quiet no está ni nominada, sin hablar de que su director no está nominado ni al DGA ni al Oscar. Es simplemente una película que toca de forma especial a UK, sobre una guerra en Europa cuando justamente es el mayor aliado de Ucrania que está viviendo una guerra en Europa

    as Germans caused and faced two world wars and hence had to face severe consequences throughout the 20th century one might understand that the nation is still hesitant about interfering into a war situation. Espcially the now boomer generation in power was raised differently and it's not as if with reunification we could have switched to "normal" and participate as if the 20th century desasters never happened. Hence we discussions about military actions that might sound awkward to some abroad. But let's face, thirty years ago many countries in Europe were afraid a unified Germany might be a threat to peace and so the Germans very clearly shyed away from big conflicts to not give the impression of being "back again".... and now as Germany did how others wanted them to keep a low profile, it should change very quickly. It's difficult. It's complicated...

    • @malouasounds
      @malouasounds Рік тому +4

      Strictly speaking, it was the austrians who caused the two world wars. ;) Otherwise I understand your point of view. It is a difficult and complicated situation for the Germans.

      @@malouasounds strictly speaking no. Hitler was naturalized German citizen and Germany - though today discussed - was according to the Versailles treaty the main culprit for WW1....

      The fact that an european award show is granting its most important categories to an anti-war movie when there is war against Europe tells you everything you need to know. We are a cowardly masochist BS continent.

    • @malouasounds
      @malouasounds Рік тому +4

      @@dreasbn I wasn't too serious;). But Hitler was born in Austria and grew up as an Austrian citizen, son of Austrian citizens. His German naturalization took place at the age of 43. Made possible by the Free State of Braunschweig, which was governed by the NSDAP at the time. Before the First World War, Austria-Hungary, Germany, France, England and Russia were in the starting blocks, it was all about economic influence and claims to power.
      Whether the Germans would have struck first is pure speculation. After the assassination of the Austro-Hungarian heir Franz Ferdinand on June 28, 1914 in Sarajevo, the military in Vienna pushed for a quick retaliatory strike against Serbia. And they demanded that the German Reich be loyal to their alliance. On July 28, Austria-Hungary declared war on Serbia, and Russia also partially mobilized. On July 30, both Russia and Austria-Hungary were at war. Ergo, it was Austria-Hungary that ultimately started World War I, not the Germans. Maybe the Germans are the main culprit but not the cause of the First World War. The Versailles treaties are not a standard, it is always the winners who write history. Maybe you should watch this movie again.
