- Hi guys,
In this video we shall know about,
What is shell?
Why shell is used to model slab in ETABS?
When to model the slab as shell-thick or shell-thin or membrane in Etabs?
What is shell?
A shell is a three or four-joint or node area object used to model membrane and plate-bending behaviour. Shell objects are useful for modelling floor, wall, and bridge deck systems; 3D curved surfaces; and components within structural members, such the web and flanges of a W-Section.
Shells may be assigned edge constraints, and may be loaded in any direction, along any side.
What is shell-thick?
Shell thick is a structural component which resists bending moment and the horizontal shear caused by the bending moment. It has in plane and out of plane bending stiffness, hence it resists part of the bending moment caused by the out of plane applied loads. As well as it resists horizontal shear caused by the out of plane bending moment. When the thickness of the slab is approximately greater than L/5 or L/10, then shell-thick element should be assigned to the slab elements to account for the horizontal shear deformation for more accurate results.
What is shell-thin element?
It behaves exactly as the shell-thick element but in shell-thin plate horizontal shear is neglected. It follows Kirchhoff-Love theory.
What is membrane?
Membrane elements don’t have any bending stiffness, so it doesn't take any bending moment caused by the out of plane applied loads. It has only axial stiffness. It can only resist axial force. So assign membrane to slab section when you don’t want slabs to resist bending moment and shear force.
Comparison among different slab type, regarding it's result outcome, should hv been tabulated n discussed.
Thank you for yur suggestion. We shall look forward to this....

Which will give perfect result
Shell thick is selected when considering the rigidity of the slab.... For example for mat and pile cap design shell thick will yield better results......
