    One thing about the 1911 in .45 that I think gets slept on often is that once you develop solid recoil management there are very few handguns out there that can sling .45 as quickly as a steel-framed 5" barrel 1911.

      10mm +P++ is achieved by using a 40SW barrel and brass. Seat the bullet for a longer/10mm OAL, more case capacity for the slow powder. Increase the Leade of the barrel with a reamer. The small pistol primer will increase the web thickness, and prevent case blowout. Increase the spring rate as needed to keep the frame from getting battered. Work up 0.1 increments until bulge is found on spent brass. Brass always fails before the gun.. unless it is a CZ52. Enjoy

      @@ImZeDoctah I would say get it in 45 acp because a lot of the 9mm versions can be less reliable unless you get a good one like the Dan Wesson Specialist in 9mm. Those don't tend to have any problems. The one I have in 45 acp is the all steel version Ruger 1911 CMD and for the money it's been great. If you get a light weight aluminum frame commander 1911 you'll probably want one with a ramped barrel because ones without the ramped barrel can cause excessive wear on the aluminum frame.

    I've been carrying a 1911 platform for 35 years now. Hands down the GREATEST COMBAT HANDGUN EVER!!!! If GOD carried a handgun it would be a 1911, in 45acp.
    I am saddened to see Wilson drop the 38 Super. The Super was the 2nd chambering by Mr Browning, as you know. With the proper ammo you have a basically have a 1911 in 357 Magnum with almost TWICE the capacity.
    I love the 45acp and the 10mm is basically the 41 Magnum, and though I own a few 1911s in 9mm it seems I am committing a TRAITOROUS ACT when I carry one. I dont feel that way when packing a 38 Super.
    As ALL of us that have carried OLD SLAB SIDES into Harm's Way know, the magazine has always been the weakest link in the 1911. GI issue mags have always been JUNK!!!!
    THE SINGLE MOST RELIABLE MAGAZINES ON THE MARKET ARE WILSON COMBAT!!!!! I personally carry the 47-D 8 round magazines in 45acp. I will ONLY use a NON-WILSON magazine IF I feel I need to practice malfunction drills. For those I use Colt magazines.
    Chip McCormick magazines are REALLY GOOD and I used them in USPSA for years WITHOUT any malfunctions. But when my LIFE is on the line, WILSON COMBAT is THE magazine in the pistol !!!!!!

    Best extractor tension test in my opinion is to field strip the gun, take the slide in your hand, take a live round and slide it on the breech face from the bottom to the top of slide being sure to hook the extractor claw into the groove on the case, and then you should be able to lightly shake that slide and wave it around without that live cartridge falling off of the breech face. If your extractor can hold a loaded cartridge on while you wave it in the air, it will work correctly every time. If the cartridge falls off, remove the extractor and carefully bend it inward in tiny increments until you achieve the necessary tension for it to hold the cartridge firmly.

    Thank you, Sir... great video. I very much appreciate your comments about a ramped barrel in "other than steel" .45s. I once owned first generation Kimber 1911, Commander size lightweight. It was in .45 ACP but did NOT have a ramped barrel. I was VERY unreliable as even ball ammo would hang up on the aluminum feed ramp, which was, of course, part of the frame. I seldom got through a whole magazine and sold ti to a guy for a .22 ACE conversion (which worked very well for him). Thanks again.

    I have a 5” in 9mm and 45acp, along with a commander length 45acp. My two cents is it is about the ergonomics of the platform. They all function the same, safeties etc...my muscle memory is tuned thru all three guns. I run my 9mm primarily as a range gun...it is cheaper than burning up my 45 Ammo, and I did have an expert 1911 gunsmith work on my 9mm extractor and it runs without fail. So I can practice more often, and I can carry either caliber with confidence in my shot placement. By being able to train more I am effective with either caliber....it is all about your training and attitude, not ego.

    The one down side, is that while it is a 1911 copy, they for whatever reason they make the sight dovetails smaller than a regular 1911, and the steel used is a harder steel, so the dovetails need to be milled out slightly and the gunsmith with a bit for harder steel, if you want to replace either the front or rear sights. Not sure why, but that would be the only drawback.

    It’s sad that they’ve dropped .38 Super. It is a 1911 classic chambering. Something has always seemed wrong, from a historical perspective, with a 1911 chambered for a kraut cartridge. Les Baer makes his stinger in .38 Super, an awesome ccw option.

      Michael Hatfield there isn’t much, if any, felt recoil difference in 9mm vs .38 Super in a 1911 platform, unless you are loading the hottest Buffalo Bore .38 Super. The advantages of .38 Super over 9mm in a modern1911 are significant.

      Do not rely on capacity! Nobody ever died from a loud noise. Every round downrange that’s not a decisive hit on the target is a potential charge or civil suit against you. Much better to neutralize the threat at the top of the magazine than the bottom. Shot placement, folks! Even though it seems to be the prevailing view that modern projectile technology makes bullet expansion of the 9mm equal to the 45 ACP; I know that the .45 will not shrink to 9mm. And the 10mm was specifically designed to be as ballistically effect at 50 yards as the 45ACP is at the muzzle.

    In 45 it is advantageous to go with a heavier 1911. Heavier frame with a rail, plus a heavier bull barrel, and full length guide rod helps. Plus aggressive grip checkering... this makes the recoil much more manageable. A fine example in this category is the Springfield Armoury TRP Operator.
    In 9mm the 1911 slide cycling feels sluggish due to the lower round energy (especially with 130 power factor competition loads)... for 9mm it is advantageous to go with as light a slide as possible either with lightening cuts or if its for USPSA or IPSC whatever type cuts are legal in division like deep serrations. A fine example in this category is the BUL Armoury Trophy SAW 1911.

  • @johnnypranin5874
    @johnnypranin5874 4 роки тому +1

    9mm and .45 are actually more or less the same recoil wise, at least with standard loads. Standard 9mm loads(115 or 124 grain FMJ) produce 330-370 ft lbs of muzzle energy, while standard 45 ACP loads(230 grain FMJ/hardball) produce 350-380 ft lbs of muzzle energy.
    First time I ever shot a 9mm pistol was a friend's Ruger P89, which is pretty much the same weight as a full sized, all steel 1911, and I didn't notice much difference in recoil. Prior to, I thought I'd shoot the 9mm better due to it's "lower" recoil. But I was wrong. My groups with my 1911 .45 ACP were real tight, while my P89 9mm groups were all over the target because the gun's too bulky for my hands. What I learned that day is that both the 9mm and .45 ACP are moderate recoiling calibers. Only big difference here is that the 9mm is much faster and snappier, the .45 ACP is much slower and pushier.

    • @johnnypranin5874
      @johnnypranin5874 4 роки тому

      @Mike P I know what you mean.
      I feel I've always done my best handgun shooting with the 1911. Due to it's straight sliding trigger and slim oval grip, the 1911 even to this day is unsurpassed for shootability and ergonomics. I've never cared for the Glock's boxy grip or it's trigger design. Glock trigger is ok though, nothing special.
      I myself didn't have much luck with the pocket guns either. Like you said, they are much harder to grip. Their felt recoil is sharper cause they're smaller and lighter. PPK suited me well though. Probably because I have small hands and because it's heavier due to it's steel construction. Like, the PPK's felt recoil was much less than say the Glock 42. I've seen several fellow shooters at the range practicing with pocket guns that repeatedly jammed. I remember giving them some lubrication for those, but the issue still remained.
      Biggest reliability issue with the pocket guns is probably what Ken Hackathorn talked about with Larry Vickers in their video on Wilson Combat 1911s (it's on UA-cam) about them having limited "dwell time" and needing proper recoil springs, hammer springs, lower recoiling ammo, etc to have proper "dwell" time.

    • @danielhenderson8316
      @danielhenderson8316 3 роки тому +4

      Because the original design was to make a 5” gun work with a .45 caliber FMJ that’s rounded instead of pointed like a 9mm. Once you start moving away from the original design, you’ve got to make changes to make the gun work in that format. The original AR-15 was designed to run with a 20” barrel. Once you start shrinking bits, then you get into different length gas systems or heavier buffer springs to compensate.

      Knockdown/Stopping power is kind of a myth, sure you can knock down bowling pins, but people don't get knocked over, they usually fall toward the direction they were heading after being shot and end up face down. It really comes down to blood loss and organ damage. More bullets = more holes = more damage. Hence the 9mm variant of an iconic .45 caliber weapon. IMHO

    I (still) be rocking the 45 Colt!
    The “Taylor Knock Out Index”: Velocity (in fps) x Weight (in grains) x Diameter (in inches) = _ divided by 7,000 [to convert into foot pounds of energy].
    9mm: [1901 AD] (Original)
    Standard P - 1180 x 115 x .355 = 48,173.5 divided by 7,000 = 6.88 ft pd

    +P - 1100 x 147 x .355 = 57,403.5 divided by 7000 = 8.2 ft pd
    +P+ - 1550 x 90 x .355 = 49,522.5 divided by 7000 = 7.07 ft pd - (?)
    Notice how big and slow is better than little and faster every time? Well now, it ain’t just what she said anymore!
    And on that note -

    Fools Figure, but Figures don't Fool! Which now leads us to the Facts -

    +P - 1325 x 325 x .452 = 194,642.5 divided by 7,000 = 27.8 ft pd - Long Flat Nose Gas Check Hi-Tek Coated Hard Cast +P
    This is the results of big getting bigger! As so did her eyes!
    Standard P - 900 x 220 x .452 = 89,496 divided by 7,000 = 12.785 ft pd - Maximum Expansion (before it expands)
    Standard P - 900 x 220 x 1.75 = 346,500 divided by 7,000 = 49.5 ft pd - Maximum Expansion (after it expands)
    This is the results of big becoming HUGE! At this point she was speechless(?).

    I've got two of your Vickers Elite Duty Mags I had 3 but gave one to a buddy. I have had zero malfunctions with them in my Colt Lightweight Commander .45.

    Prison guards in my town talk to a lot of inmates. There are lots of them who tell stories about being shot by a 9mm.....some of them, multiple times. I haven't heard of any of them telling stories about being shot by a .45acp.

    So there is really no much difference in lethal power between those two, both will penetrate or over penetrate the aggressor, I think that people get caught up in tiny differences in grams and millimeters when they should be focusing on hitting the target. If you shoot someone in the heart or any other vital organ, does not make any difference if it´s 9mm or 45.

    I wouldn't throw either out of bed sort of speak. Have several 45 I'm still working on the 9mm but it's going to happen soon. And you have to clean them can't go to the range several times and not clean this pistol. And I won't use steel case anything aluminum yes have been running that for competition for the last three years and have had zero issues with the aluminum rounds. Still shoot brass when I can get it in bulk. Both of these are very nice and worth the money.
