I have, thoroughly, enjoyed watching all these Sap Evaporator videos. I enjoy all your videos but these have been most interesting to me for some reason.
You taught me a lot about making maple syrup, I had no idea how it was accomplished. Great video content, thanks for the hard work putting them together.
How can anybody give you a thumbs down, here in Canada we call them hosers ( and we do have a lot of them) !!!! awesome videos Joe , thank you for sharing with us
I made one of those few years back it worked great did put fire bricks in it and also a small fan in front of door made fire hotter pushed up evaporation rate enjoy the syrup
You talked about getting a bigger stove for next year. (which is a great idea!) But hold on to this stove. It might come in handy for finishing a batch at the end of the night. (You can transfer coals with a shovel. Fun fact: If you drill some holes in the shovel to let some of the ash escape, you won't put your fire out with the ash from the old fire.) ❤🌅🌵😷
Hi Joe great video. My brother inlaw and I tapped our maple trees this year and we made an evaporator out of cinder blocks that holds 4 of those pans. Very inexpensive way to up your production
I totally enjoyed watching this series of videos from start to finish . The project of building the evaporator, the collecting of sap and the cooking down . Wow a lot of work . I really urge everyone to watch these. Also the video editing was tremendous as usual. I will say that this was very entertaining and inspiring, but the sad part was I didn't get to taste any of the syrup lol. That is some good livin right there!
Loved the Sap Evaporator/Maple syrup videos Joe. Sounds like this might be turning into something annual like duck hunting or deer hunting. I'd watch it!
And again Joe you have showed a person can do what ever they set their mind to,I have learned so much from your surpy videos,I have seen other short videos on it,but never in detail like what you have showed,I look forward everyday to seeing if you have done a new video, cause I have not watched 1 that disappointed me,excellent job on all you do,you should sell some of your surpy,100% pure maple surpy is high, you could sell it in smaller size jars, and do good at it,keep up the super job,and keep the videos coming, after surpy harvest is over, what do you think will be your next project
Hello from a fellow sugar maker in New Hampshire. Long time fan. I run an almost identical set up, but I have a 2x2 flat pan instead of the two steam table pans and I can get 10 gph if I keep the blower running and the arch full of wood. If you and Zach have not looked into reverse osmosis, id highly suggest it! Thats my next step for next year and hoping by 2024 ill have a nice sugar house and a much larger arch and a nice 2x6 pan like you were talking about!
Hey Joe. Love the videos. If you build an evaporator out of a 275 gallon oil tank, build it with the tank upright, not on its side. I’ve done both and the upright is definitely better. A 2’x4’ evaporator pan will be plenty big enough and about as big as you’ll be able to fit. My pan is 26” x 48” x 8” deep. 18 ga. Stainless steel. The next best upgrade you can make is a reverse osmosis. Check out theRObucket website. Great for small operations. They are reasonably priced and you won’t regret it. Cuts your boil time at least in half. Easy to put together and use. There are some good UA-cam videos on the ROBucket also. Good luck and have fun! Joe
You see them in the next video a little. It has been a long frozen winter and when that happens you can not clean out the coop until it thaws. Once I get it all cleaned out and summer is here I will do more on the chickens.
I have the same set up and I been using it for 6 years now.. I did have a 2+2 pan cheapest on a drum and I had over 80 trees taped and I was amazed how I was able to keep up . I would like to get a 2+6 set up
Nice going Joe. What size are your pans. Are they warming pans from a steam table? I have a few trees I could tap too. Used to do it as a kid. Traded sap for syrup. I think we traded a 100 gallons for a gallon of syrup. No muss no fuss. Every year we'd spend a night in the sugar shack and boil sap. That was about 50 years ago !! Very informational videos. Thanks.
Curious what is in the filter, the by product? Do you like the taste, as good as Costco maple syrup? Maple only? What do the other tree syrups taste like?
Seems to be pretty efficient and has provided quit a bit of maple syrup & candy. If you where to increase your operational capacity, what will you do with all that additional syrup? How long can you store it?
We will sell it. They say that if the jar is sealed it will be good indefinitely. Once opened you need to keep it in the fridge and it is good for 2 years.
Have you thought about running lines between trees and your buckets that collect? There’s a lot you can do to automate the process and not collect from individual trees. Just a thought. What you’ve done to date is really great!
Joe would you sell me a pint of the finished surpy,I would include enough for shipping also,I would love to try it,especially after watching you go through the whole process,it has been so enjoyable
Joe's Suger Shack build this summer .. Gold Shaw farm uses is mates stone build sugar boiler its epic Also look at self modern reliance fun you tube channel he's building a sugar shack
Adding water to the warming tray at night is a great idea, but in the next year look for a steel plate that could go there instead. .... I was also thinking that if you got a couple of grates to fit those slots where the pans go, you'd have a great spot to cook your pork steaks over the wood fire like you like. (You could use the steel plate for a grill.) ❤🌅🌵😷
You start tapping when the temps go above freezing during the day and below freezing at night. I will be covering when you stop collecting in one of the upcoming videos on Northern Seclusion.
I watched just about every video you put on ypu tube and I don't think I've ever seen you eat pancakes. What do you do with the syrup? Besides make candy
The evaporator you built works great I wish when I did maple syrup I had seen how to build one of these I used 3 turkey pots and propane that was defiantly not the cheap way to go. The bulk of the trees I tapped were on the in-laws property and when they passed away and it was sold I lost access to them. And I don't have enough trees to make it worthwhile. I'm not sure where you get your supplies from here is a place I got mine from the sap bag's and holders they sell work good. There catalog is better than there website they used to have different sizes of pans you could buy to put on your arch ( stove) they may give you and Zach Ideas of what to build. leaderevaporator.com/
No barrel stove would be anywhere near as good as the tent wood stove. It will heat it up faster but a barrel stove would be too big. The tent is insulated very well. Also, with the tent wood stove I can monitor and change how warm it is in there very easily. You do not have that kind of control with a barrel stove. I honestly would not change the tent wood stove with anything, the one I have works awesome.
Has anyone on here seen Joe eat pancakes or French toast? That is all about I know to put Maple Syrup on. Looks like maybe Pancakes on the menu at the Tent for late morning Brunches on non-Hunting trips.
Almost every time I go to Perkins with Melissa for lunch I get the "triple egg dare ya". 3 eggs, hash browns, sausage, bacon, 3 pancakes and 2 pieces of French toast. Lol.
That filter stand with the tomato cage is pretty darn brilliant. Well done.

Good job
Thanks Joe for all the information on how you did all your maple syrup adventure 👍👍👍
Really educational, Joe. I have come to a new respect for my morning confection. I thought it came in, you know, little glass bottles...

Really enjoyed this series of you making syrup.
Very, very interesting! I love watching every aspect of this process! Thanks for sharing, Joe!
How Cool is that!!!!...
Thanks for sharing.. awesome job.
Very cool my buddy runs one every year a blower or fan will double your evaporation
Nice touch putting the syrup into those maple leaf bottles.
Great idea with tomato cage
Hi Joe and Melissa nice video you made a great job on that evaporator
This has been very interesting to watch. Thanks for sharing
Thank you for the video, Thumbs UP👍.
I like those bottles! Thanks
Is there anything you can’t do?! My husband and I really do enjoy your channels and content. Keep the videos coming!
Great content Joe!

Hey, Joe, me and my Uncle have that same setup. we have two of those boilers and we probably got a little more than 200 gallons of sap.
The many facets of Joe. He’s the total package.

you make it....i'll buy it!
cool
This has been so informative. I might hunt down a maple tree in WY! Ha.
hey....when i made syrup i went to small saw mill and got the edgings....burn HOT....clever idea on the filter stand...
There is a whole lot of things going on in turning sap into syrup. Combination of Art and Science.
you forgot TONS AND TONS of work, patience and love!!! And those are three things that this guy has plenty!
Beautiful jars
Fine looking syrup you got going on there !! I see pancakes in your future !! Stay Safe !!
Makes me want pancakes right now.
Made the same barrel stove, set it on concrete blocks so it was easier to load wood.
I miss the videos about the chickens on NS.

My Dad and I made one yrs. ago out of a old 55 gal. drum FUN! Grade b or c by the looks
Nice, my grandpa used to make maple syrup in Ohio but that’s one of the things that I just can’t do here in NC. Nothing better than real maple syrup.
I see a new way to cook up mud bugs for a boil.
I do mine exactly the same
Joe, there's a video from Creekside Maples that shows installing their evaporator & how it works. Maybe you can get some tips or ideas.
But I think that you’re right on by having two pans- one to heat and the second one to do the better boil.
Joe, my buddy up north has a nice set up. I'll ask him to send some pictures to me and I will send them to you.
I feel like Joe would be an excellent brewer of beers. Any future plans for microbrewing, Joe? Hobby Farmhouse Ale? Northern Seclusion Stout?
Melissa bought me a whole home brewing kit. I will for sure be doing that in the future as soon as I have some time.
Great review vid! What do you estimate your gallons per hour boil rate is on this setup?
Joe, why not look into going 2 drums long or wide.
What do the different trees taste like? I'd be curious

Curious what is in the filter, the by product? Do you like the taste, as good as Costco maple syrup? Maple only? What do the other tree syrups taste like?
Lil shack would help with heat loss from wind possibly?
I agree. I had days when I could not boil because of rain also. A shack would have solved that.
I've seen people around here make a pipeline out of pvc pipe to go from tree to tree
Have you thought about running lines between trees and your buckets that collect? There’s a lot you can do to automate the process and not collect from individual trees.

I can not legally sell it yet. We are looking into that for next season.
Joe's Suger Shack build this summer .. Gold Shaw farm uses is mates stone build sugar boiler its epic
Also look at self modern reliance fun you tube channel he's building a sugar shack
When you pour it through multiple filters, what are you removing? Bugs, dirt, airborne debris?
Any debris but the main thing you re removing is the sugar sand (Nitre). If you do not filter it it is still good but it will be cloudy.
*You should spread that ash in the garden*

@@JoeandZachSurvival I can hardly wait to watch your upcoming video.
🥞🥞🥞🥞🥞👍👏😋
how long will syrup stay good for???
They say that the sealed jar will be good forever. Once you open it you need to keep it in the fridge and it will be good for 2 years.
Gotta be honest, I only watch the tent videos..
Your choice, UA-cam is a big place, lots of other videos to watch.
please explain what you will do with all that syrup
Next year we will sell it. This year was a nice trial run. Next year we can tap more trees.
@@JoeandZachSurvival Hey Joe, sell me a bottle now. We can do Paypal. I live in Alabama.
When does the sap stop running?
I will be covering that on the Northern Seclusion channel in one of the upcoming videos.
Will you sell any in the future?
Probably next year yes.
Check out Creekside Maples , he has a great system , Mapleberry Farms , both have good systems , yours has worked really good !!
That build went much faster. lol
Let's see you multi purpose that evaporator and do a couple of pork steaks! Stay safe!!
I actually thought about that. Pull one pan and throw a grate over the opening and I could be cooking steaks. Lol.
@@JoeandZachSurvival Those coals looked ready!
I watched just about every video you put on ypu tube and I don't think I've ever seen you eat pancakes. What do you do with the syrup? Besides make candy
I am not sure yet. I do sometimes have pancakes or French toast. I will have to see if Melissa will make me some.
So how many gallons of sap to gallons of syrup did u convert?
I talk about that in the videos I have been posting on the Northern Seclusion channel.
I got a house heating wood stove that work good but and evaporator works faster and better.
The evaporator you built works great I wish when I did maple syrup I had seen how to build one of these I used 3 turkey pots and propane that was defiantly not the cheap way to go.
