Im late to this party, & as prob has been said 300 times, but with bree “looking like a set”, thats the magic of peter jackson, he used sets, ministures & “bigstures” as often & whenever possible...so much love was put into these movies...yeah, he used real stuff, non-cgi at every opportunity l i think the movie-biz term is “practical effects”....loving this reaction, i hope i dont comment 90 thousand times🙄

You should look into the EXTRAS ... because 99% of this is NOT GREEN-SCREEN / CGI, which is the reason why these movies look great. They have REAL ARMOR ... as compared to Amazon's "shirt with chainmail print" production.

6:20 I have watch this reaction several times and have not paid attention to Trin saying flute is an instrument she loves, as I do cause was the first I learn to play, well the recorder, but still, and was thinking you might like to listen to the music of modern composer Zbigniew Preisner most well known for his soundtrack score for "The Secret Garden" movie, but he actually is a flutist and a recorderist and he has many lovely pieces for that instruments. His albums Requiem and Les Marionettes are sublime and dreamy

Judging by your reaction to this first film, I think you would enjoy "the making of LOTR". You will end up with a deeper appreciation for all the work and details that went in to this trilogy. It explains how Peter Jackson used a forced perspective technique to make our hobbit characters appear smaller and SO MUCH MORE. Excited to go on this journey with you.

Many have even gotten the books including the Silmarillion and his many other books outside of the main trilogy books. Children Of Hùrin, Book Of Lost Tales, Unfinished Tales, Red Book Of Westmarch, Of Beren and Lùthien, Morgoth’s Ring, Laws And Customs Of The Eldar, Fall Of Númenor, Fall Of Gondolin, Lay Of Leithien! ❤

When the story came to the big screen I couldn't wait to see all the characters brought to cinematic life. The scenery and soundtrack were so impressive. All the scenes in The shire are real not Green screen, They had a small set made for Gandalf to look huge, IN an interview it was revealed when Gandalf banged his head on the frame wasnt scripted. he was meant to duck down under and struggle to pass through but infact had to take the afternoon off from filming as he gave himself a partial concussion.

"Like sending two kids out into the world." Yes it is. But it's the child like innocence of the hobbits that mean they don't fall instant prey to the corruption of the ring, when even Gandalf thinks he'll fall prey to the corruption, even with the best of intentions.

Enjoyed your reactions! Since you have apparently watched the Hobbit movies, you know that Gandalf knew that Bilbo had acquired a magical ring. But which ring? "There are many magical rings...and none of them should be used lightly!" Gandalf had been uneasy about Bilbo's ring ever since he found out about it, but the ring had no stone or any markings, as if it were one of the lesser rings. When Gandalf first greets Bilbo at the door of Bag End, he exclaims, "You haven't aged a day!" and gives him a hard look. Hobbits live to be 100 as often as not, so Bilbo is very old but not unduly so. It is the fact that he still looks middle-aged that reawakens Gandalf's fears, for only the Great Rings prolong life. But Bilbo comes from a long-lived family on his mother's side, so perhaps there is nothing to worry about. Gandalf knows that Sauron's forces are actively looking for the One Ring, so he is taking a chance in letting it lie hidden in the Shire. So he rides to Minas Tirith, the great city of Gondor founded by Isildur, to seek for accounts of its finding. Once he reads Isildur's account of the Ring's appearance, he immediately returns to the Shire and gives Frodo's ring the fire test. Only then is he sure he has found the One Ring.

It's never mentioned in the movies but Arwen is the granddaughter of the most powerful mage in the world Galadriel, the elven queen.
She also had two brothers in the books I don't remember having them confirmed in the movies.

I’m glad you mention that Bilbo was an unusual hobbit for exploring outside the shire. Many movie watchers (understandably) wonder why Merry and especially Pippin (who, let’s be real, is the problem rather than Merry lol) are “allowed” on this journey. XD But that adventurousness that both share is a rare quality in hobbits. But in real life, “heroes” are often the people who actually do it, not necessarily those you expect will.

It’s my own personal Frodo and Sam !!!! I’m so very happy to join you on this journey. If it’s any consolation, the end credits are EXTREMELY LONG and there are no end credit scenes, so the movies aren’t nearly as long as expected. And great cliffhangers to end the first two so you immediately want to watch the next one.

Gandalf is a "Maia". One of five Maiar that the Valar sent to Middle Earth long, long ago.
The Valar (the "Gods") sent five Maiar (think of them as Angels or Demigods) to Middle-earth to help contest the evil of the fallen Maiar (Sauron and Balrogs). Yes, in a sense, Gandalf and the Balrog are brothers. They had great skills of hand and mind and assumed the guise of Men, seemingly old but of great vigor. Their mission was to guide Elves and Men by gaining trust and spreading knowledge, not by ruling them with fear and force. They were known as the "Istari" or Wizards.
    These Maiar/Istari were:
Gandalf the Grey, (later Gandalf the White)
Saruman the White (Curumo or Curunír; later "Saruman of Many Colors")
    Radagast the Brown (Aiwendil)
Alatar and Pallando, the "Blue Wizards" (for their sea-blue robes, they went East and disappeared)
Gandalf was known by the following names:
Olórin (his "true name" as a Maia)
Gandalf (Men, Hobbits, in the North)
Mithrandir (Elves : "Grey Pilgrim" or "Grey Wanderer")
Incánus (Gondor / in the South, possibly "Mind Ruler" or "Mind Master")
    Tharkûn (Dwarves : "Staff Man")
    Greyhame (Rohan : "Grey Cloak")
The Grey Pilgrim (Elves & friends of elves)
Stormcrow (by King Théoden of Rohan, due to Gandalf chasing trouble)
White Rider (by some of Edoras)
Láthspell (derogatory name by Grima Wormtongue : "Bad News")
    Old Greybeard
    Gandalf the Wandering Wizard

One thing I always notice now and find 'illuminating' is, when Frodo puts on the ring atop weather too to escape the 5 and gets stabbed, Aragorn is seen as Full pitch black dark in the eyes of Sauron, meaning that he's a great threat to him while many others are just light grey or 8n the case of the 9, bright white.

21:45 there are _Uruk_ ("Orcs") but these are the _Uruk-hai_ (think of them as "Elite Orcs"). in the movies, the Uruk-hai are usually depicted with the mark of the White Hand of Saruman to demonstrate their higher rank and "finer breeding".

A note on Book vs. Movie: One of the biggest flaws in this movie is the Fact that Aragorn has Anduril from the very begining of the story, when he draws his sword to confront Sam in The Prancing Pony, its Anduril he draws, broken about a foot below the Hilts, The "Flight to the Ford" scene wasnt a big deal except he made Arwen out to be some kinda of wizard and she DEF was not, the flood was triggered automatically by the Riders themselves trying to enter Rivendell by the Elven Ring Elrond wears, those are the only "serious" errors/flaws in the story of the First movie, the other two come with thier own flaws as well, but in the intrest of "no spoilers" ill wait till those are posted to comment

There are two things I tend to want to point out to people. As you surmise, the setting is somewhat low fantasy; Tolkien uses magic elements as a form of miraculous divine intervention where the ultimate fates of human-kind are up to their own free will (this literary work is one of Christian influence). This is a setting in which magic is defined by those who wield it a force of nature or ontological being (where "magic" might instead refer to something outside what is possible, or believable). For example, in the books, Sam asks an elf about elfish magic, and she is bewildered by the question. The other thing is that Tolkien's time and place was such that social stratification changed in an evolutionary manner (rather than revolutionary); Samwise is a servant of Frodo's and plays the role he accepts as natural for him according to the order of things.

The reason everything looks so grounded and real is because most of what you see is real. Whether that be a miniature in the case of Orthanc (Saruman's tower), Rivendell and The Argonath or gigantic "sets" like The Shire which was planted and built over the course of a year before a single frame was shot. One thing to note about the miniatures is that they were huge. So you could film them very close. The ring of Isengard was about 20 meters in diameter. Complete with caves and mining equipment. All in camera.
The pre-production of these three films was insane (they were shot in one go and edited into three films. Just like the books had to split into three from one great volume because of paper being so costly at the time. ).
Truly a passion project of nerds playing around with their toys.
edit: If you want to look more into this, the keyword is "big-atures". But please wait until you've seen them all.
