  • These are the updates and fixes so far on the Father's Day 322. From some basic baseline maintenance items to leaky gas tanks and broken hydraulic lines to an old 318 being a great parts donor. This "71" hour tractor is finally ready to be put into service.

      Thanks David. I do like when the kids are involved too. I know they will retain more knowledge that it appears now, but it's also fun to hear her thoughts on things as we spend time together. As always, thanks for watching.

      @@FloridaDeere I learned that when my 21 year old daughter was due for an oil change, and she called me to ask if it was better to use ramps or a jack stand. I just assumed she would take it to a place to get changed, but she helped me change oil for 20 years, so I guess something sank in.

      Yeah Timothy, I rotate them out on most of my tractors for simplicity, however, no way around these with the weights. I wasn't wild about the front tires, but I always like the Terra Tracs, they are an excellent, non-Chinese tire...sort of, being that they are Taiwan and the Tawianese are really Chinese, but they good Chinese...so to speak.🤣 As always thanks for watching.

    I went thru some of what you did on my 322 including the belly screen removal and all fluid changes and the junk somehow deposited on it. Since the mower deck will not go back on since I installed a LBL, the belly screen likewise will not go on.. After a few hours, I just take the air hose and blow off junk from underneath. Much easier and cleaner.. Good luck with it..

    • @FloridaDeere
      @FloridaDeere  2 роки тому

      Why won't the belly screen go on? Using that I believe keeps garbage from getting against the radiator and it's screen. You can buy the screws from Ace as well as the square mounts that they screw into if you need them. I don't know what an LBL? I always blow off the tractor after mowing, it's a must and I never use the deck guards/covers, they just accelerate damage death. Thanks for watching.

    That looks like a very early 88 model by the older type paint. The newer ones were powder coated and flaked off badly. Looks like a good project.

    • @FloridaDeere
      @FloridaDeere  Рік тому

      Yes sir, an 1988 for sure. And I had gotten it ready to sell and was about to when it started to leak quite a bit at what I think is the charge pump. Also I believe there is an issue with the alternator, so I'm gonna fix both and keep it and turn it into a very nice future project. Not sure when I'll get to it, but hopefully in the next 6 months or so at least to start. Thanks for watching.

    • @sentryfe74
      @sentryfe74 Рік тому +1

      @@FloridaDeere The charge pump inlet shaft seal is a common leak. And the alternator is most likely corroded wires especially the two AC wires from the alternator to the regulator. They can actually get hot and melt down.

    • @FloridaDeere
      @FloridaDeere  Рік тому

      @@sentryfe74 Yep, I bought the parts for the charge pump already and will tear it apart and stick a rebuilt 420 diff in there when i do this project...I'm going all out. And I hope my battery guy in Starke can help rebuild that alternator when it's time. He helped me with my LGT16D, pretty similar engine type, so we'll see. Hopefully I'll turn that one bad day into a really cool project tractor.

    What’s the clearance difference on the bottom of the tool boxes with the two different size tires? I went with stock new tires because I wanted the tool box for sure and was scared of how close it was gonna be. I got the tool box idea from you btw, thank you I love it!

    • @FloridaDeere
      @FloridaDeere  Рік тому

      James, I figured there was enough room, but wanted to check anyway and you have plenty to go with any size tire. I have 23"'s on one and had 25"'s on another. The 322 with 23's still had 2"+ and remember, going from 23's to 26's is only a hike of 1.5", since you split the difference, top and bottom from the axle center. So technically you could go 27", but I've never seen 27's except on a 15" tractor rim. Either way, any JD garden tractor tire size will work. The other storage unit is essentially the same size as the tool box. I'm assuming you are talking about the right hand side of the better looking 322 I have? Not the Father's Day 322? Thanks for watching James.

    The 322/332 use different front hydraulic lines than a 318. They run down the sides.

    • @FloridaDeere
      @FloridaDeere  2 роки тому

      Yes they do, for the rear hydraulic kit, no modification is necessary on the 318, but you have to cut the lines on the 322/332. Oddly enough the use of the 318 line on the 322 with the hydraulic kit actually worked out pretty good...if not perfect. Thanks for watching.

    More proof that you can't believe an hour meter. If it's accurate, it only proves total time doesn't mean it's in good condition. That tractor is pretty rough. If those hydro lines corroded to the point they fell apart, you can bet the rest of the tractor is just as bad. I was expecting totally different comments after reading the title. I don't think you got around to telling us what "the trouble with $300 tractors" is. I personally feel the 300 series are pretty much not worth updating anymore as the parts are spendy and harder to find every day. Not to mention you have no idea what condition used parts are in. You may be buying one more summer and that's it. If you're lucky. I'm down to one tractor now, my highly modified 317 and it's getting to the point working on it is more annoying than fun so I think my next machine will be a 425 or 445. I would really like to get into the fuel injection era. Something the wife can get on, turn the key and go. I have lost interest in rebuilding them. But, the grass keeps growing.
    You and Thomas must have something going. You get the keepers, he gets the part-outs. :)
    That little girl is a doll!

      Come on Joe, these tractors have more years into them. Don't forget, if you have several, it's not like anyone is getting the bulk of the work done. Much of the tractor's condition is good, transmission, engine, radiator still. You can still but many new parts for them too. I do agree, buying certain old parts from other folks is certainly iffy though. As far as the hour meter goes, I agree, it doesn't seem like a 70 hour tractor, maybe the meter worked, stopped and then started again🤷‍♂. I do agree, the 4X5 series is the next generation of "deal" tractors.
      Thomas and I are local buddies that swap, advise and sometimes do joint Deere hunting together. After our purchase of last June's 420 Parts mule tractor, he was amazed at how much I was able to get for the parts and started that as his side hustle...every fireman's got one right?🤣 He's a good guy, even if he makes bad jokes.
      Thank you for your kind words on Lilly, don't don't let her fool you, she's a hot mess. I thought my first one was a hand full, wow! The other kids will be gone for our last 6 years with Lilly by herself, my wife and I will need all the effort to help control her sass. She can be sweet though.
      As always Joe, I thank you for watching and your support of the channel.

      @@FloridaDeere I've looked at my hour gauge when I first looked to buy the 322.. Had around 1200 hrs which is not a big deal on a 322.. Looked decent, ran well, came with a solid deck/bagger for $ 1750.. New coil packs, oil change and radiator fluid change. What kind of sold me was the extremely smooth engine... Not a great deal but a fair deal imo.. Passed on a 318 with around the same hours due to the horror stories I read about the non metal cam gear... That said, for $ 300 you made a heck of a deal regardless how many hours are on it.. Maintenance is far more important than hours most of the time..

    • @FloridaDeere
      @FloridaDeere  Рік тому

      @@ngzcaz I agree 100%, if it does have 69 hours, my 1300 hour 322 has been a lot more reliable so far. Now to be fair the alleged 69 hour one has a compression of 180psi compared to the 1300 hour one which has a 155psi compression. That may be a matter of different years too, as both have the same psi across all three cylinders, which to me is even cooler. But yes I think maintenance matters way more than hours in 99% of cases. And you are right about waiting for a 322. In my opinion, those engines are far more solid than the Onan's. Now I don't knwo that the Onan's had the plastic cams, I believe that was a 325-345 series thing with the Kawasakis, but I could be wrong. Thanks for watching.
