Lovely car and fair play to Ben for having kids not stopping him driving the car he wants. For cars of this value it's often much cheaper just to get a personal loan from a bank rather than car finance. Take the £35K purchase with £5K deposit. A £30K loan from Tesco over 60 months is £593 a month at a rate of 7.2% APR, with a total interest cost of £5,619. Nearly half the interest compared to the car finance example. Bought my 08 in ‘21. 31k one owner car. Fell in love and continue to love it. A robust car, if bought right, will be rewarding. But, know it’s a relationship. Keep up with maintenance and service. Find a good independent that knows Astons as dealer labor costs are eye watering. Or better still, learn and do many things yourself as I do. Pure joy that will put a smile on your face, especially with the V12 at 6800 rpms.
I really like this series of videos you've started. Food for thought! As an NHS worker, you only have to look at the news to realise that having a mortgage and a £700p/m payment for a car, won't wash. "However!"(lol), in about 8 years when the mortgage is gone, I WILL look at something like this. With the best will in the world and with the most idealistic outcome, my AR Gta, will lose its battle with oxidation eventually! Maybe I'll drive it over to my dad's in Athens, where it'll stand more chance than sunny Glasgow! One of the vehicles from your declassified vids would be amazing 👍
I've driven one of these and loved every second of it. Such a gent of a car and you really have to beat it with a stick for it to even begin to misbehave.👍
Thinking of pulling the trigger on one of these & this review is undoubtedly the best I've seen. One or two things I wasn't aware of on the later cars. This will be a keeper along with my Clio Williams. Thanks James!
I both adore and despise this series. You've shown me cars i've lusted after in the Auto Trader pages, and looked longingly at in traffic, and then shattered my daydreaming with the harsh but honest reality. If i spent everything I earned, yes i could have one, but in truth, this gorgeous automotive triumph will remain unobtainable to me. Thanks James for providing some grounding to the airy petrolheadonistic yearnings.
I had a 2005 DB9 for 6 years and drove it 45,000 miles. Absolutely loved it. Sold and bought a 2011 Rapide to make wife happier. Still very happy with the Rapide
@@jaybee11 Yes, the Rapide feels very much like the DB9. The view and feel from the drivers perspective is identical. The Rapide is 400lb heavier so the performance is a bit less but not by much. I prefer the Rapide for the ground clearance and being able to quickly put things in the back seat and go. Getting to the back seat of the DB9 for any reason is a PITA. The ride in the Rapide is better too. Aston only built 4979 so it is rare and special. However most of the parts are DB9 so servicing will not be an issue. Buy the Rapide.
Lottery win I think I’d still buy a DBS as it’s such a nice looking Car something about older Astons. Running a modern classic it’s all about the cost to keep it on the road as you’d need a certain level of disposable income to stomach any repair bill. I salute anyone keeping these older Cars on the road.
Got to agree with Ben's sentiments; what ever that special "it" is, if you can afford to buy it, insure it, tax it, fuel it and (most importantly) maintain it, then just go and do it. It could be a humble hot hatch that you've lusted after since you first saw it or a high-end exotic that has done all of it's depredation, life's too short for "I wish had been brave enough".
My man, you took the words right out my mouth. That’s what I’m doing with the DadCars channel, trying to build a back catalog of all the exciting cars people lust over and checking out their usability with children. Making a case for people to go for it and make memories (as long as you can afford it of course) 👏 I’ve done some cars that have never appealed to me personally but everyone has their own dream car, got lots of affordable stuff lined up to.
Nice one James. I've been thinking about owning a DB9 over recent weeks and undertaking some research. This resonates with what I've learnt. Great job! 👍
An exhaust valve controller is generally under £100 and it's pretty easy to fit! But... I'd encourage anyone to also eliminate the primary cats because if they start to break up and bits get ingested back into the engine, thia will likely destroy it! Bamford Rose do a very nice manifold replacement which also slightly improves the sound and adds a little power. Their UA-cam channel is a wealth of information and advice and an essential part of Aston ownership - or of pre-purchase education!!
For those on the west side of the pond, Velocity AP (formerly in the UK, now based in Vancouver, BC), deal with everything Aston. Sport cats and tune are readily to be had. Or if residing in the US, just park in town and wait approximately 11 minutes for your cats to be stolen. Then let insurance buy the new ones..
1-1.2k for a large service is actually rather reasonable, especially when you look at what doing the services properly may save you in repairs later down the road
Great video as always, James. At the lower end of the market at £35k and putting in a £5k deposit, so £30k to finance, you’d be much better off getting a personal loan - 12.9% APR even in the current market is laughable.
It is for people to decide what's best for them, because some of the cars I am looking at would be well beyond a personal loan for most people by using C&D I can keep the figures consistent. You're not wrong about 12.9% being painful though
@@JayEmmOnCars totally get that mate - apples with apples. Just thought it was worth pointing out, that depending on how much you’re borrowing that it’s worth considering other options. Pros & cons to both.
Taking a loan to buy such a car, old Aston Martin is kinda silly. I rarely doubt if you finance 30k you have 10k arround just in case something breaks. And it will break. Good luck paying for the repair and the loan then...
Thanks for this video. I love the DB9 and DBS (my grail) but not enough to let my 07 XKR go. Feels special without any of the increased costs of ownership that these cars have.
So Christmas week I went car shopping with my boss. He was pretty set on a 997.2 911. I did my best to convince him into one of these. But in truth they're both pretty damn awesome attainable dream cars.
Great series of videos, I'm always on the classifieds looking at db9\465gt sometimes Bentley GT, thank you for bringing the light on real costs of ownership, sadly I don't think db9 prices will stay low for a long time, they are too pretty and too well built and usable to stay in the 35-40k mark.
That was the most enjoyable video i have seen of your's, I think you have found your niche! Exellent coverage of all about the car in a very well presented manner. There has long been a need for the living with information about "exotic" car choice. Thank you.
My advice, Sir, is find yourself a Vantage. They can be had for rather less than a newer Mustang V8, they really don't cost all that much to maintain, and even a 15-year old example is pretty competitive for power and fun. It's just nice to sit in a car that feels built for you, and smells of real leather. They're also subtle enough that people don't necessarily gawp at you driving by..
Thanks for that James, enjoyable and informative. These are great cars that I don't think will get any cheaper. I had one for 4 years and nearly 30k miles, and it was brilliant, no major issues, always special. £2k a year to run sounds about right now, as it was then. One of the few cars I miss.
Loving this new series of yours Jay. Two years ago I was persuaded to go electric, OK fine but running two new cars on PCPs is pretty expensive & for long trips no cheaper than ICE. It’s now time to go sensible, lose one of them & get a DB9 or XK… PS you did inspire me recently - just bought a 19 yr old petrol Merc S350 lwb for long family journeys, epically refined & comfortable car for £3k !!! Yes it might go wrong but not if you look after it I reckon… We are off to Croatia in it in the summer 🤞
Driving one of these in 2007 for a day put me off the brand I thought it was so dull for the price but 15 or so years later I find myself looking at one to replace my 996 that I love
Great car had a ‘54 and always get stopped in the street by people commenting on it, but a nightmare to own. Do a search on the gremlins, electric mirrors drop, windows dropping, spurious alarms. But pressing that start and the v12 without primary cats lol. Petrol didn’t bother me but bare in mind 12mpg. I got rid as the paint is rubbish, one wing and both doors as well as roof seams bubbling and this is on a composite winged/ Bonnet and Ali door car!!! Do a check on the dbs on Mr mww and you will see paint issues. Still miss it though.
That was brilliant Jayemm. I bet this channel will become your most successful. Very thorough deep dive. I'm going back to watch the Ferrari FF video. Can't wait. Fantastic content. Thank you.
About to start my work for today, but maybe it's something to do with being named James after James Bond, but I just can't dislike these cars as much as some. This will be an interesting watch when I'm on break or later. I prefer the DBS styling but they have a huge premium
Loved and miss my Db9, a low mile Volante. But, the French drains of Florida local urban roads entering a driveway were harsh on the lower front of it. Six speed manual was awesome. Top down and sunshine, what's better? JayEmm, thank you. Superb, as always!
Many other cars have the same problem with aluminum body panels due to sketchy grounding. The solution is to install a few sacrificial pieces of metal (usually zinc) that corrode first. In my car, the battery terminals corrode and look a mess, but I let it go as it's NOT corroding the body panels and new leads every 5-10 years is fairly cheap compared to fixing panels and a re-spray. Note that the metal pieces need to also be bare and untreated - you want it to corrode.
@@JelloTypeR The issue is a steel body for most of the construction and engine with aluminum outer body panels. The dissimilar metals want to act as a battery and the aluminum ends up being the anode. Grounding and prep needs to be carefully done to prevent this, usually with zinc plating. Note that this will slow the process. All aluminum in vehicles will eventually have problems with galvanic corrosion if the manufacturer isn't extremely careful with the whole process. Typically they use Zinc plated items as a sacrificial item, and for parts that are largely immobile. Such as your muffler and exhaust, brackets, and fasteners. Which if the grounding fails, the aluminum is the next best thing... oops. Some cars are more prone to this as well. My Mustang is all steel and just the hood is aluminum. So.. It's a Goliath of metal versus one poorly armed David. If the hood isn't prepped right or enough other metals aren't available to chew on, it's done. About half of all Mustangs over 10 years old have bubbles in the paint of their hoods because Ford cut corners in the paint prep.
Superb! Like the 'save 10 mins to prevent your children becoming crack addicts'!!! Yep the number of times you get the W anchor in a 911and M5C... ...F12, E63 v10 and V12V please ... ... at least this V12 won't ruin me much.

Funny I found this video. I was looking at DB9's and couldnt wrap my head around the Ferrari priced parts and dealer fees......and Ive owned 2 Ferraris! Ended up getting a Jag XK and havent had a lick of trouble. Perfect
I see no point is going to main dealer for a DB9 that’ll be driven daily… unless it’s a 1 owner garage queen just go the specialist indi route, it makes it reasonable.
A great review James. We have a beautiful DB9 in storage, and the owner just advised he wants to sell . It really is an amazing car, when you’re next over take a look. Vint-tro. 👍🏼
Thanks for sharing the finance costs. With the increase in interest rates cars are becoming really expensive. It will be interesting to see what happens to the market this year.
Thanks very much for the video. Having owned a 2002 Vanquish, (new from the factory) I have been interested in a DB9 Volante to replace my late XK Convertible but kept coming back to the Jaguar. I found the Vanquish seats (made by Recaro) very uncomfortable - the hard side bolsters digging into the thighs. They are obviously made for slim hipped Italians. Having spent so much on the car, I sent it to a trimmer who took the seat apart, re-formed it and re-fitted the original leather, (Aston supplied new matching thread) and the difference in comfort was spectacular. However, I have yet to sit in an Aston which is as comfortable as the XK. The only thing I would disagree with you is on, is the interior. The DB9 is full of "chromed plastic" and plastic buttons and the instruments look like a cheap watch. The (later) XK has a higher quality feel to it, with solid buttons and lovely clear instruments.
Awesome advice. Thank you very much. I took notes. Drove 2007 DB9 and was underwhelmed per my daily 99 996.1 911 manual and Lexus GS F. So, DB9 w Sport Pack is key, perhaps 2009+ w Sport Pack, duly noted.

- Delivery: I can't watch some car channels because of the persons voice and the way they talk. Yours is nicely measured with an edge of enthusiasm.
Thanks for the video! I’ve been thinking about one of these for a while now.
Intro music is superb. Classic Fender P bass. Unmistakable and lovely.
Great review as always. Love the comparison with the XKR, my favorite car.
@@robertthrailkill1368 Does it feel any similar to the DB9? Looking to purchase a DB9 and I’m also looking at a Rapide
Brilliant series James. Love the detail you go into. Looking forward to you doing an M3 review. Used to own one and thinking of getting another one.
An excellent report on the DB9.
Another great episode in this new series. I bet there are a few extra 1000 autotrader searches of the model in question after the episode drops.
Brilliant and informative. Really enjoy tour style, look forwards to the next one!
I’m 34 this has been my dream car since it got released ❤
Snap same age as me 🤗
Nice one James.
I think Bamford have a horse in that race
For those on the west side of the pond, Velocity AP (formerly in the UK, now based in Vancouver, BC), deal with everything Aston. Sport cats and tune are readily to be had. Or if residing in the US, just park in town and wait approximately 11 minutes for your cats to be stolen. Then let insurance buy the new ones..
Just purchased one Matt and I can't wait to drive it 👌👍
1-1.2k for a large service is actually rather reasonable, especially when you look at what doing the services properly may save you in repairs later down the road
It’s called a warranty 👍
Excellent series and love this DadB9!
By far the most thorough and unbiased car review I’ve ever seen. I love your channel. Definitely looking forward to more!❤
2006 automatic tranny failed was in shop 9 months cost 28k
Thanks for this video. I love the DB9 and DBS (my grail) but not enough to let my 07 XKR go. Feels special without any of the increased costs of ownership that these cars have.
So Christmas week I went car shopping with my boss. He was pretty set on a 997.2 911. I did my best to convince him into one of these. But in truth they're both pretty damn awesome attainable dream cars.
this is such a great series
I love the FF and the DB9
I'd like a video about the 12c
12c is a great shout 👏
12C is on the cards!
Much appreciated J really enjoy these informative I think I will wait a few months before I finally upgrade see what you review next thanks
Not for the first time during JayEmm content, I had to take a break to check DB9s on Autotrader!😂
Do it, do it, do it!!! 👏😅
Love the tongue in cheek commentary
Loving this new series, makes some of these cars a lmore realistic prospect while at the same time bringing me back down to earth!
That was the most enjoyable video i have seen of your's, I think you have found your niche! Exellent coverage of all about the car in a very well presented manner. There has long been a need for the living with information about "exotic" car choice. Thank you.
agreed... on the trickle charger & just do it....I'm smitten in love with my 2014 model
Db9.2 is an incredible car 😍
I love this new series! Keep them coming!
If I didn't live in the US, I would have to try one they are gorgeous. Great stuff, Cheers!
Super... more of this.
Well done young fella.
Thanks Brendan, any requests?
Thanks for that James, enjoyable and informative. These are great cars that I don't think will get any cheaper. I had one for 4 years and nearly 30k miles, and it was brilliant, no major issues, always special. £2k a year to run sounds about right now, as it was then. One of the few cars I miss.
Very nice car. This is as close as I will get to driving one. Love the styling. Better than most other Aston's.🔥🔥♥🏁😎
beautifully presented as always , love the aston but for the money the jag is a better choice for me
Nice video! We need a video of the 2nd Generation Lamborghini Gallardo soon!
easily my favourite Aston in terms of design.
I love this format!!!
Much needed - thanks!
I’ve never seen such accurate predictions level!!
Bravo!!!
Now please tell what is going to happen to Clarkson on Top Gear one day..
Loving this new series of yours Jay. Two years ago I was persuaded to go electric, OK fine but running two new cars on PCPs is pretty expensive & for long trips no cheaper than ICE. It’s now time to go sensible, lose one of them & get a DB9 or XK…
PS you did inspire me recently - just bought a 19 yr old petrol Merc S350 lwb for long family journeys, epically refined & comfortable car for £3k !!! Yes it might go wrong but not if you look after it I reckon… We are off to Croatia in it in the summer 🤞
a well researched and well presented episode Jay, well done!
Great reviews, can you please do a review on an Aston Martin Rapide?
Driving one of these in 2007 for a day put me off the brand I thought it was so dull for the price but 15 or so years later I find myself looking at one to replace my 996 that I love
Really liking this series. Thanks
Excellent review. Tons of well thought out advice and information
Congratulations on finding a manual V12!
What is the issue exactly? I’ve not heard of bad earthing causing corrosion before.
Loving this declassified theme of video, very informative 👌🏻
Looking forward to seeing one of these episodes on the Rapide!
My type of video! Useful buyers info. Well done.
A very good review indeed. Thank you very much. for you work and dedication. Much appreciated. 🙂
Simply excellent James no more to be said 😀👍
Superb! Like the 'save 10 mins to prevent your children becoming crack addicts'!!!
Yep the number of times you get the W anchor in a 911and M5C...
...F12, E63 v10 and V12V please ...
... at least this V12 won't ruin me much.
Love the idea of the declassified series, if you could find a Maserati Granturismo and an Aston Rapide, it would be great !
Both on the list!
Nice one Jay! I was tempted by the DB9, until I watched you in the Bentley continental gtc. So I bought it, and I must admit she's bloody lovely 😍
I may buy a Aston Martin DB9 or the Rapide later this year 🤔
Sounds like it's been a good year!
Sure
Funny I found this video. I was looking at DB9's and couldnt wrap my head around the Ferrari priced parts and dealer fees......and Ive owned 2 Ferraris! Ended up getting a Jag XK and havent had a lick of trouble. Perfect
I see no point is going to main dealer for a DB9 that’ll be driven daily… unless it’s a 1 owner garage queen just go the specialist indi route, it makes it reasonable.
Love this concept, thanks Jay. Pete
Great series 👏🏼... from start to finish these videos are class. Very informative and exactly what's needed.
A great review James. We have a beautiful DB9 in storage, and the owner just advised he wants to sell
. It really is an amazing car, when you’re next over take a look. Vint-tro. 👍🏼
Love the dad cars ref. I recall many a sunny Sunday pub run in my MG RV8. 2yr old strapped in the only passenger seat. Poor missus cycled it 😅.... 🇬🇧
Thanks for sharing the finance costs.
With the increase in interest rates cars are becoming really expensive. It will be interesting to see what happens to the market this year.
Fantastic review 👍🏻😀
Wow that's insane. A top car like Aston should have real chrome interior parts.
20:59 Clarkson would be jealous of that justification. That’s a good one.😂
Great video. Keep up the good work!
Loved that Jeremy Clarkson reference - "less likely to grow up as glue sniffers"
