Im personally a camaro fan but love both cars its awesome to see GM and Ford keep overdoing each other and cant wait for a head to head between the gt and ss new gen
I never had problems with the shifter in the Shelby when I drove a friends. I ran it hard from 1st thru 4th multiple times and thought it felt great. Never missed a shift and did not feel notchy at all. Could just be the car but who knows. Both these cars are awesome though!!
So for sound, I think the ZL1 sounds nicer from the exaust, but the shelby sounds nicer from the front, with just engine, mix the 2, best car sound ever.
Reading these comments is quite painful. It's as if nobody watched the video and immediately hit the comments section to start arguing. Gotta' love UA-cam.
I had bought a 2010 Camaro SS but when Ford came out with the 5.0 in 2011,I knew I had an inferior car. I sold the SS in 2012 and this year I got myself a 2012 Mustang GT 6 Speed in Grabber Blue. It is better than my previous Camaro on so many levels.
well to summarize, the ZL1 is the handling focused "modern" age muscle car. while the GT500 is old school straight line muscle car. the GT500 lacks brakes, sophisticated suspension, proper dampening, refinement, and daily drivability. the Zl1 lacks visibility (you have to be a confident driver), straight line performance (compared to its competitors), and weight (its hella heavy). randy pobst did manage over 1 second lap time faster with the GT500 while chris harris managed a 2 second faster time with the Zl1 over a GT500. so the GT500 can be faster (for one lap) in the hands of a professional driver. but to 99% of us (and chris harris) the Zl1 will be faster (by a lot). so it comes down to better handling or better straight line. and honestly you can have much more fun throwing a car into a corner on your favorite back roads, scenic drive, or highway "dodging". then trying to use 662 HP in straight line. the sad part is that you can approach the limits of handling on public roads in the GT500... which is scary in a very bad way....
how so? the ZL1 is far more refined, far more sophisticated, and despite being larger and heavier it holds more than 3X the track records the GT500 has.
Both cars are more than enough for your average American driver. I still think the Boss 302 with the LS package on Ford's end is the better buy. I loved the cup holder test and thank you for guys for not pointing out the obvious like every other channel out there! Great job!
I've got a trade in also an '06 Viper and possibly the normal ACR, but honestly the budget shouldn't be all that much of a problem. I've seen a few around at the track sometimes though pretty nice, and yeah love that sound. And we had a Charger that had around 1700-1900hp at one point, but caught traction at a bad point at the strip and put me into the wall. Well no more Charger. And is the new GTR anything like the older Skylines? I had one a long time ago.
Wow, was the gearbox that bad in the GT500? Considering the many older, "interesting" cars Freiburger has driven, I doubt his shifting was off. I can't understand how a performance car can have gearbox that seemingly almost want you to crunch synchros all day lol
It's that bad I have 2012 gt500 and 1st to 2nd not happening without a long pause between gears. My other cars have BW super t10 in my AMX and the muncie m22 in my sold Nova. You could nearly no lift shift those transmissions, never grind unless it was user error.
Man, I love them both. I got to tell ya. I don't know which one to buy. Mustang or Camaro. I'm not looking for performance, just a car to have good memories with. Ya know?
Breaking Cycles I think I'm going to get a mustang in 2 weeks, but at another car lot there is a sweet Camaro I'm gonna test drive. And an affordable challenger there too. Wish me luck!
I think so too, the mustang is the better package and the better compromise of style, handling and daily-driver Features ;) But the mean look of the camaro is unbeatable! :) (but the challenger too )
Shelby maybe a fun car, but the Camaro is a way more serious car I've been in a 1991, 1993,1995, and a 2010 SS. The SS was comfortable but the 1991 was pissed, loud, and fast!
In the end, it's not about which is faster, it's about having fun, that's how I make decision when buying a car ! Totally agree with this review. But I'm stuck debating which car to get!? The dodge challenger is out the window because it's too bulky for me. I am hesitant to get the chevy camaro, because I hear about the blind spots, the mustang, haven't heard anything bad about it, so Im stuck between camaro and mustang.
Funny cause. The 580hp zl1 was meant to compete with the 540hp gt500 lol. But its always compared to the 662 hp gt500 lol. Chevy didnt anticipate that 😂😂
I totally agree with you. Also how many people out there actually take their $$$K car to a race track....sometimes....often... rarely?? Real people want a review in a real setting, real environment. For that kind of money in this day n age more consumers tend to be a little more MPG conscious. In my opinion Don't get me wrong, these are awesome cars (especially for young drivers) I just think this review lacks in practicality.
There is NO lack of reviews on the internet of both of these cars, so what's the issue here? I have a quick "muscle" car and I hate the fact that it doesn't even have a cup holder. I'm not in race mode all day, sometimes it's me...and some lucky lady cruising around. We need cup holders.
Glad I got to drive both of those cars, the Stang is nice and all but I noticed because how notch like the shifter I had trouble, the Camaro I must admit was a very nice car to drive and I don't like that car but with the redone interior it isn't have bad and it rides very nicely. Just have to Drive the new 15 SRT 392 (not the hellcat as much as I want too) and see what it's shifting and ride is like... makes me miss my 2012 SRT8 Challenger...
I'm only 21, and haven't even played around with any car over 200 horsepower, but I really can't wrap my head around if I should save my money for a ZL1, or just go with a 2SS 1LE and have a good bit of money to spend. I've got nothing against Mustangs, especially the Shelby's and Boss 302's, but I just personally like the way Camaros look, especially the ZL1.
If I were picking old cars to smite new tuners i'd have to go buick. Not super old buick either like 1980's buick and GMC. Those things were QUICK!!! Even by todays standards a 350/370z is still pounded by a GNX. Car is just the perfect v6 turbo. lol. 0-60 in 4.7 seconds with the sickest rear suspension out there. When you accelerate the torque forces the rear suspension down toward the ground and eliminates wheel hop and literally creates a second force against the pavement. AWESOMENESS!!!
Omg! I was looking around for reviews on the zl1 because im interested in buying one, and i didnt know my favorite presenters reviewed them 9 years ago lol! I love roadkill!!!
the live axle isn't that bad.. ford did an astounding job with making the Boss 302 handle exceptionally with it.. i hope the new IRS doesn't have issues like it did in 99-01 cobras
I'd gladly take either car, but for the sake of staying what's in my driveway, it would be a Chevy. I like the console of the Mustang better though...easier to swap a double din head unit in there. Speed wise, I don't care. I couldn't get the best out of either one of these cars on my best day at the drag strip, let alone around a course.
Randy Pobst (The Rocket) race car driver said the GT500 was better at the track then the ZL1. The reason he said the lap time got slower was because of the brakes on the GT500 sucked not the suspension or handling. I just wanted to clear that up.
This car is a manual, which means the shifter is necessary. You can buy an automatic instead, which means the car will handle the shifting itself, and instead of having a shifter there is a knob to put it in park, reverse, neutral, drive, or engine braking/ low gear
When the new GT500 came out to it seemed to me that GM had nothing to reply with. Then word of the new Vette started to be leaked and it's new LT1 450 hp stock, so i can't wait to see if we get a Z28 and the new Zo6 and ZR1. If this new motor is as good as the LS then damn!
Both are excellent cars and i like both the shelby and zl1. Their both respected cars in the muscle car world but me personally i'd go with the camaro. I'm a chevy guy and my dad owns a 66 chevelle. But at the same time i wouldn't mind driving a mustang
You know what sucks was my Celica without cupholders. You know how hard it is to hold your drink, eat, shift, and steer all at the same time? You can't even really hold the drink between your legs cause you have to work the clutch.
Sitting here in 2022 with my 2014 ZL1 putting out over 800 horsepower laughing at the nostalgia.
Im personally a camaro fan but love both cars its awesome to see GM and Ford keep overdoing each other and cant wait for a head to head between the gt and ss new gen
Both of these cars are just beautiful, I love American muscle
"Fuel economy? Why?" xD lmfao
I'll take the Camaro anyday!!! Camaros 4 life!!😍
Camaro all day
Nah mustang
Zl1 all day
I never had problems with the shifter in the Shelby when I drove a friends. I ran it hard from 1st thru 4th multiple times and thought it felt great. Never missed a shift and did not feel notchy at all. Could just be the car but who knows. Both these cars are awesome though!!
I love how the beginning of this episode features David and Mike plugging in radar detectors. I would expect nothing less.
These 2 + Jay Leno should have been the Top Gear US hosts.
I'd take the shelby
So for sound, I think the ZL1 sounds nicer from the exaust, but the shelby sounds nicer from the front, with just engine, mix the 2, best car sound ever.
I agree
bumblebee vs barricade
"Fuel economy.... Why?" Hahahahaha
If I have a car like one of those, I am not bringing any cups like that or food in my car. Only sealed drinks like bottled beverages.
+Hank jr Breukelman Seriously. I cringed when they spilled the drink in the Camaro. I have a fucking base V6 mustang and I don't eat or drink in it.
Thanks for not doing the same old reviews that these normally get...
These cars have aged so well, they look amazing now in 2020.
Start in 2nd, dump the clutch at redline. Don't have to find 2nd.
Reading these comments is quite painful. It's as if nobody watched the video and immediately hit the comments section to start arguing. Gotta' love UA-cam.
+DV7Dave It is rather sad, isn't it? Today's youth just doesn't get it. I honestly feel sorry for them.
This zl1 is the best looking ever!!!
Here I am watching car videos again. I cant wait to own my own Camaro one day x.x
I WANT THE ZL1 CAMARO. ILL TAKE THE ZL1 ANY DAY!!!!!!!!!
I want a zl1 with black and purple pearlescent with black 28" rims and transformer spoiler and purple halo lights
NICE!!!
+Julian Bernal no..... don't add big rims
camaro all day
well to summarize, the ZL1 is the handling focused "modern" age muscle car. while the GT500 is old school straight line muscle car.

For the sound test, the Shelby wins in the front, Camaro wins from the exhaust.
Camaro driver let him win, you didnt notice that?
Typical Chevy fan.
The 5th King At least he's not a Dodge fanboy, they are the worst ... FYI I prefer Camaros over Mustangs but I am not an egotistical prick aha
DaSracasticFish Im a GM guy, but i gotta give the mustang props.
For the base v8... same hp at 1.2 liters less.
Hell no. Mustang is the best in exhaust note
Wow, was the gearbox that bad in the GT500? Considering the many older, "interesting" cars Freiburger has driven, I doubt his shifting was off. I can't understand how a performance car can have gearbox that seemingly almost want you to crunch synchros all day lol
VQSeries no this guy just doesn't no wtf he is doing
It's that bad I have 2012 gt500 and 1st to 2nd not happening without a long pause between gears. My other cars have BW super t10 in my AMX and the muncie m22 in my sold Nova. You could nearly no lift shift those transmissions, never grind unless it was user error.
@@chrislrocks Interesting, good to know - thanks for reply!
The fucken Mustang is a beast! Period.
+Alan Bustos yep mustangs are da best and if you want a bad a$$ mustng search Mustang Cobra Jet
It's a fucking pussy
+Alfredo Garcia shits on every chevy there is for drag racing lol booty hurt
Two of my favorite muscle cars, but the Camaro wins my heart all the time. Good thing I'm getting a 2013 soon:)
A test I never thought I’d see or wanted to se will if they hold giant cups 😐
Man, I love them both. I got to tell ya. I don't know which one to buy. Mustang or Camaro. I'm not looking for performance, just a car to have good memories with. Ya know?
Misty Lane It's all about the test drive. Pick which one you feel the most comfortable in. I personally think the Camaro is nicer.
Breaking Cycles I think I'm going to get a mustang in 2 weeks, but at another car lot there is a sweet Camaro I'm gonna test drive. And an affordable challenger there too. Wish me luck!
Good luck!
Breaking Cycles :D
Misty Lane Yeah I hear ya, think I'm leaning ZL1.
Mustang all the way 100%
all thease people fighting over mustang and camaro while dodge is like " let`s just put 707hp in a sedan"
Milolub Bogdanov 😂😂😂😂
This is the best vs Motor Trend has ever posted lol.
Love this Video! Long Live American Muscle Cars!! Merica!!
just bought me a 2011 chevy camaro RS. not the SS or Zl1 :(.. thinking about trading it back in and getting a Newer year and maybe the zl1!
GT500 had the better sound. It sounded much cleaner from the exhaust and from the front you could hear the supercharger more.
stfu
Amer Muratovic No, fanboy.
I agree. mustang all the way! cobras will always be better
Hector Obregon u r right
Camaro ❤❤❤
Really like this video that they aren't hating on either one, both are nice and fast but im all for mustang!
Bien les deux gars, merci pour cette vidéo très sympa, keep cool, Thank´s of Switzerland .
Camaro is beautiful but mustangs overall quality is just way better. I pick mustang anyday
I think so too, the mustang is the better package and the better compromise of style, handling and daily-driver Features ;)
But the mean look of the camaro is unbeatable! :) (but the challenger too )
I pick Camaro Anyday. :)
Shelby maybe a fun car, but the Camaro is a way more serious car I've been in a 1991, 1993,1995, and a 2010 SS. The SS was comfortable but the 1991 was pissed, loud, and fast!
Steve Kale 91 Camaros were junk
+Steve Kale I personally like the 95
+Phillip Brandt Jr well my dads was a v6 he just did an engine swap for it to be a V8.
Soon as I saw the guy in the Shelby was wearing flip flops I knew this was dumb
+Joshua Salama you must be new here lol
im gonna tell you now that the guy in the flip flops is chief and editor of hot rod mag
the guy in the flip flops also went to the saltflats got five records in five days then when 260 mph in a camaro
ignorance is a crazy thing ain't it
In the end, it's not about which is faster, it's about having fun, that's how I make decision when buying a car ! Totally agree with this review. But I'm stuck debating which car to get!? This segment was completely stupid.. if you are concerned about fitting a 44oz gas station drink in your $55k+ muscle car, you shouldn't own it.
I totally agree with you. Also how many people out there actually take their $$$K car to a race track....sometimes....often... rarely?? Real people want a review in a real setting, real environment. I'm starting to think that cmaros are better
Lol why would you ever think that?
because they always have been
Lol no
Honestly camaros just keep getting sexier. As for the mustang, sorry. The new ones don't look all that nice.
They look the same as they did in 2009
But they still kick your ass....your criticizing the looks cause you know mustang is better in every other way.
Wish they'd reworked the mustang's body style a bit more to make it a little edgier in the newer models. But in the end, Cameros all day.
Alex Silva The camaro and the vette the front end looks like the smiley ball at Walmart
Johnny Stephens the camaros are soo ugly bruh
I own the 2014 Camaro but I like them both. Nice cars!! Would be happy in the Mustang also...
I love BOTH of these cars!
dave sucks at driving lmao making mustangs look bad
+Tyler Christiansen I've driven one its shit your right but I've seen people shift the fuck out of em so it's the driver 😂
Ford rules FORD= Fastest On Race Day

That's sick!!! When I lived in AZ I used to drag at Speedworld every Friday... Awesome little run down track....
Glad I got to drive both of those cars, the Stang is nice and all but I noticed because how notch like the shifter I had trouble, the Camaro I must admit was a very nice car to drive and I don't like that car but with the redone interior it isn't have bad and it rides very nicely. mustang won that all day
Mustang sounds better, makes better burnouts and drives faster
Mustang sucks..flip over so easy.camaro is better..
No
Smoke weed everyday.... Stang is DA best
Flip over? Lmao

man you guys had too much fun. I love both cars...
As usual you guys have too much fun. When I rented a mustang I totally agree the cup holders suck.

ZL1 é um sonho de consumo, não sei quanto custa um novo por aí mas aqui no Brasil passa dos 500k!
I love both of these cars. They seem to have 2 different purposes though. Both are badass and neither are a disappointment
at least he didn't crash the mustang!
You guys have the funnest job
I feeel these cars are like brothers, each one trying to beat the other and be better than the other. But in reality they are family.
I'm a Camaro guy, but these are both really amazing cars. I don't have a bad thing to say about either.
love them both...
i have to say that stang having a 50+hp on the camaro and only win by like a half a car is sad
Mustang had a bad driver if it was a good driver the zl1 will lose by 2 or 3 cars
"Fuel economy? Why?" Lol
You can totally fit 2 large cups in the Camaro cup holder
the live axle isn't that bad.. ford did an astounding job with making the Boss 302 handle exceptionally with it.. i hope the new IRS doesn't have issues like it did in 99-01 cobras
RIP speedworld. Fortunately I had the chence to go there and spectate as a kid a few times before it was shut down permanently.
You guys should make a video over Ford GT vs the Corvette.
Randy Pobst (The Rocket) race car driver said the GT500 was better at the track then the ZL1. The reason he said the lap time got slower was because of the brakes on the GT500 sucked not the suspension or handling. I just wanted to clear that up.
Love them both.
Just a question, do you have to drive with the shifter? Can you just put it on D (drive) and just step on the gas and drive.
This car is a manual, which means the shifter is necessary. You can buy an automatic instead, which means the car will handle the shifting itself, and instead of having a shifter there is a knob to put it in park, reverse, neutral, drive, or engine braking/ low gear
Is there an automatic version of the Mustang GT500?
NinjaPotato I don't think so.
Dat Apple The Shelby GT500 doesn't offer but i think the other models do
Fabio da costa yea, I think all other current mustangs offer an auto.
loved the zl1
I Love the Mustang But I see them every DAY T_T so i would go for the Camaro
Both are very nice, I'd have to say The GT500 by its power and sound!!!
Speedworld Arizona! My favorite track! Save Speedworld!
OMG. My 2 favorite cars!!!
Both cars are fast and hot! However, how often do you race around a track vs from a red light? I'll take the Mustang...it's engine is a masterpiece.
Awesome, I'd like one of each!
Regardless of your driving skill, those cars would be pure FUN.
Wow they were in The Coachella Valley and they didnt let locals know in their previous video about their location to get pics or signatures..!
It sucks here in AZ during the summer....sooo much power loss with the heat.
the shelbys shifter is hard as hell to get use to.
When the new GT500 came out to it seemed to me that GM had nothing to reply with. Then word of the new Vette started to be leaked and it's new LT1 450 hp stock, so i can't wait to see if we get a Z28 and the new Zo6 and ZR1. If this new motor is as good as the LS then damn!
i love how the ford fiesta makes that same sound the GT500 made at 3:46
3:46
what is that spot where u guys did them donut's ? i stay here in phx az and that looks like a greeat spot
Both are excellent cars and i like both the shelby and zl1. Their both respected cars in the muscle car world but me personally i'd go with the camaro. I'm a chevy guy and my dad owns a 66 chevelle. But at the same time i wouldn't mind driving a mustang
ya your right the camaro headlights are just ages beyond ford in style, plus the grill looks more menacing.
The Shelby is my fave. Looks and sounds better and fits bigger cups :D
Woow both cars are perfect
i want that Chevrolet Camaro
you guys should do a roadkill episode talking about your experience with cops while driving
"fuel economy?..
why?"
love it lol
You know what sucks was my Celica without cupholders. You know how hard it is to hold your drink, eat, shift, and steer all at the same time? You can't even really hold the drink between your legs cause you have to work the clutch.
