Baking soda and Vinegar Lava lamp experiment you can make it using just a few simple pantry ingredients and recycled jar or glass. It doesn’t get any easier than this!
When you add the vinegar, which is more dense than the oil, it sinks down through it at the bottom. Sometimes this doesn't happen right away and you will see little bubbles of the vinegar floating in the oil just above the colored water!
When the vinegar (acetic acid) and baking soda (bicarbonate of soda, a base) mix together a chemical reaction begins, the same gas that we also breathe out, carbon dioxide. These gas bubbles back out up through the oil. When the bubbles pop at the surface, any vinegar they carried with them will sink again while more bubbles continue coming up.
This carries on while the chemical reaction continues - you can keep adding more acid every now and then until it stops.

Hi irislorikeet4287, It usually last a couple minutes but you can add more vinegar and it should start again. As you see in the video there is still baking soda on the bottom and once the vinegar hits it it will start that reaction again. It won't last forever but you can always add more baking soda if the vinegar doesn't reacation any more. thanks for watching.

Cool experiment. Does vinegar and baking soda neutralise when they come in contact with each other and is that the reason why the food colour starts to rise up?
Hi Nived K P,
Yes you are right when the vinegar and baking soda come in contact with each other they form a carbon dioxide gas and the gas floats to the top and the gas bubble pops and the vinegar that got caught in the gas sinks back down.
When baking soda is mixed with vinegar, something new is formed and causes a chemical reaction. The mixture quickly foams up with carbon dioxide gas. If enough vinegar is used, all of the baking soda can be made to react and disappear into the vinegar solution.
The reaction is:
Sodium bicarbonate and acetic acid reacts to carbon dioxide, water and sodium acetate.

Does it matter what type of oil? Canola, vegetable, etc.
Hi SixHandSpice World, I used a genetic Veggie oil from the store (Walmart). I don't think it matters which oil you use, as oil should be less dense then vinegar and baking soda. Let me know if you have any other questions thanks Ken

Can we use any other colour instead of food colour? Like may be little bit if poster colour or acrylic paint?

when will the reaction stops?
Good Morning Rain Patrick De Guzman, Once the chemical reaction from the baking soda and vinegar has finish. So once the reaction starts too slow down or stop you should be able to add more vinegar and start the reaction again. Thanks Ken
