    my mom is 96 and has dementia. But 28 years ago when went on our 1st cruise she had just started to show signs of memory loss. Like we would go to a restaurant where her and my dad ate at every week, go to the bathroom and forget where the table was when she came out. That sort of thing. Both my sister and I lived out of state but because of work I was able to fly home every other weekend and noticed these changes. Anyway, when we went on our 1st cruise that year I told my sister, whatever you do, don't let her out of your sight. She gets turned around, confused, whatever you want to call it and she can't find her way back to you. So always keep eyes on where she is. Well my sister felt I was over exaggerating the situation. I remember walking up to her in the ship's shopping area and asking... where is mama? She said she went to the bathroom.. so I was like where is the bathroom? My sister didn't know. I was FRANTIC! She thought I was overreacting. Fortunately, I did find her wandering the opposite walkway trying to find her way back and all turned out ok. But this story brought all of that back to me. And to anyone.. even if your person doesn't have a diagnosis yet, if you notice them getting confused etc... keep an eye on them, even if its just to the bathroom on the ship. Pretend its a 4-year-old... you wouldn't let a 4-year-old wonder off on their own. Same with cognitvie impairment... even in the beginning stages.

      I used to volunteer in a hospital, and there was a floor for patients with cognitive issues that is locked to visitors with security out front because even in an impaired state, should they wake up middle of the night, and maybe a nurse is checking on something else, they could potentially walk off. It's really hard for caregivers because this is an adult and you're not used to having to tether to an adult to make sure they are with you and okay, but you have to be 100% vigilant. I'm glad that family had at least an air tag, but with the two of them, one could have gone to the bathroom, and then the other so someone was with him at all times. That is a real consideration to make, that you can't really travel by yourself with someone with dementia, because if you are incapacitated, or ill, or have to go to the bathroom, someone else that is aware of how to care for someone with dementia needs to be there. As you know, it takes just a few seconds for a family member to walk off, just like kids who zip off all the time, but they won't most likely know how to get back to you given their mental state.

      Right on target here. My mom just passed away at 94. She had full blown dementia. Please don't let your loved ones with dementia to go off on their own as they are easily turned around and need a companion to keep them safe. As an added measure, it's also a good idea to put some kind of tracking device like an Apple Air Tag in their pocket, but only if you plan to stay in a highly populated area with a bunch of other cell phone users.

      I had a very similar experience with my Mom. I woke up and she was gone. Royal Carribean was amazing they notified every staff member in seconds and found her wandering the halls. After that I put bells on her., but didn't sleep well after that. It was only a 3 day cruise and I was exhausted after. had not realized how bad her dementia was. She never remembered the cruise.

      @@jamesparsons8006 Hugs to you on that terrifying experience. I think it happens more often than we know about, so glad yours had a happy ending. Sometimes leaving home makes it present itself more. In her later years that is what happened with my mom so she had to stop traveling. a sad day for me because she was my number 1 travel buddy all of my life. On her last cruise in her 80s she left the room with an open jacket over her bra. I knew that we wouldn't be able to cruise anymore because it was too triggering for her. But she is still alive at 96 and happy living with me. We can't travel together anymore but I make adventures for her here at home. Put UA-cam destination videos on the big screen tv and watch them together with a fru fru frozen drink.

    The big takeaway from this, be well informed about traveling with someone with dementia even if it's at an early stage,
    1) have a plan.
    2)Travel with at least one other person so that the impaired one is never left alone.
    3) Talk with your physician prior to traveling for suggestions.
    I've worked with dementia residents, this such a sad situation for the family.

      I am taking my Dementia client of two years to visit her friends. Do you think at any time I would leave her unsupervised? ABSOLUTELY NOT! It is common sense! Families get directions from the doctor once a patient is dxed on the do’s and dont’s. Plus, there is a plethora of info out there so they can educate themselves further. Dementia only gets worse. And at ANY time, a switch can flip in their brains and change everything. They are not in their right mind, so the caregivers need to be their protectors.

      Most of the time I'm fine but a couple of trips there were problems that would have been no big deal if at home. I'm not going to let this stop me from travelling because it's something I love and did when I had a job that took me all over the world. I am currently on my 100th cruise with Carnival. I have never boarded a ship and had to wait later than 1:30 for cabins to be ready (they're usually earlier than that). Before the Covid shutdown Diamond status guests rooms were ready immediately but now there are fewer stewards, more guests and increasingly larger ships, so a bit of patience and understanding on the part of guests would help.

They were exceptionally gracious and kind and were on a first name basis with the staff. As I said, I know there are folks who have had the good fortune to have enjoyed so many cruises on Carnival. Carnival should consider hiring a cleaning service just to help cabin stewards when the ship gets into port on the last day/first day of a cruise. By 1:30 the cleaning service would be off the ship and the cabins ready. As it is now, if cruisers cannot get into their cabin for 5-6 hrs after boarding, it may feel as if they’re losing time in the cabin that has been paid for. These stories by vloggers hurt Carnival’s brand. (And we appreciate vloggers informing us about what’s happening). This is a simple fix Mr Carnival Ambassador that would help the brand at a cost that would be absorbed by happy cruisers who come back and bring others with them.

    • @DaveTexas
      @DaveTexas 2 місяці тому

      Why do you pray? I don’t understand the logic behind it.
      1) Do you think your deity doesn’t pay attention? Do you need to point out things like this to your deity?
      2) Does your deity not have a "plan" for everyone? Are you praying because you believe your deity’s plan is wrong? That’s kind of passive-aggressive of you.
      3) Does your deity just ignore people unless others pray for them? Why would you worship a deity that behaves like an "influencer," only taking action when they get enough "likes"?
      4) If praying actually worked, why would you pray for someone after a bad thing already happened? Why not pray to ask that the bad things not happen in the first place? If your deity can fix a problem after it already happened, then they can prevent the problem from happening at all. So why be reactive instead of proactive with your praying? Or can your deity NOT prevent bad things?
      I’m autistic and have a very logical brain, so I don’t understand the concept of believing that magical deities are real and that they can magically fix things but usually just sit back and choose not to fix things. I similarly didn’t understand the concept of Santa Claus when I was a child…

    There is another part of the problem that is being overlooked. The people on the previous cruise do not get out of their staterooms at the prescribed time. Which also delays the cabin stewards. I've heard some people say, "I paid for this room and I'm going to stay until my zone is called".

      @@angelealaahnaann4589Actually, there are caregivers who do go with their loved ones into the bathroom. The ones I’ve known did this as they discovered their loved one was easily disoriented. One friend had the locks changed to keyed bolt locks to keep up with her spouse at night! He was luck in that the police knew him and could return him to home.
      Another friend went to the bathroom when his wife did. She agreed to wait for him right outside. She came out before he did and we found her walking fairly far away. We had agreed to pick them up at the restroom but when we saw her and not him, we picked her up and drove her back to where she was supposed to be. At this time she normally seemed oriented and could carry on most conversations, she got worse later. I’m not sure I’ve ever seen a woman get out of a restroom before a male! I’m sure he would have left her with us if he thought he wouldn’t get out first too.

    Carnival advertised FTTF originally as your room will be ready when you board like suites guest but they limited the numbers available. I feel they’re greedy and raised the availability along with the price and made it harder for employees to get their duties done. Now they want to point fingers at the passengers. Now they say just drop your stuff off, that wasn’t the case before the pandemic. I usually only purchase FTTF when I have to fly in a port, I usually time it just right when I’m home and I stop being afraid to check my bags. I’m lucky so far I haven’t been on a ship where the rooms wasn’t ready at 1:30 or earlier 🤞🏾

    The reason for the FTTF cabin issue is that Ive seen verbiage that stated "first access to stateroom". Now their web site says, "Once on board, you will be able to drop off your bags in your stateroom until your room is ready." I think its still badly worded imho. Nothing in that says you cant hang around in the cabin, so its still unclear. It should say something like For luggage drop off only. Cabins will be ready at 1:30pm for you to enjoy. Something like that anyways.

As for the rooms, it is obvious to all VIFP members like myself who've cruised a lot that there has been a HUGE cutback on the room stewards. That is plainly Carnivals' fault for cutting so many positions and/or not hiring. These are good jobs for the countries they hire folks from, and so it must be that Carnival simply isn't hiring.

    I'm done with Carnival. I cruised on the Vista last month and I was appalled by the service. Rooms not clean (I bring lots of disinfectant wipes to clean every thing down). I pulled the coffee table back and found toe nail clippings. I found hair in the bed and stripped it bare and got new linen. Those room attendants do not have enough time to properly clean those rooms. I'm not sure what time the last person disembarks but the new cruisers are coming back on by 12:30pm. Carnival needs to start embarkation later, like 4pm. The first day is at sea anyway and nothing special going on. I think they also sent the best crew workers to the brand new ships.

    I took my very first cruise last September 2023. I started off small. 11 day cruise on NCL up the east coast from Baltimore to Quebec. The ship (Norwegian Sky) was coming from the Bahamas, I believe, and as they were trying to stay ahead of a storm, arrived in Baltimore a day early. When we boarded the next day at 10:00 a.m., everyone's room was ready. We were really lucky. I never had any desire to cruise at all, it just never appealed to me, but this was a family obligation. I figured if I was going to be trapped on a ship for 11 days, I might as well make the most of it. I upgraded everything. I purchased extra specialty restaurants, the drink package, Wi-Fi, and I even got an aft facing balcony cabin. As it turned out, I had the time of my life. I enjoyed it so much, I'm hoping to do it again sometime. It's not something I can afford to do on a regular basis like a lot of other people here, but it definitely gives me something to work toward and look forward to again.

    • @SharonPerson-hm9ds
      @SharonPerson-hm9ds 2 місяці тому +1

      @peter_bazinet Happy to hear you enjoyed your first cruise so much, and would go again! It's my favorite way to travel - stop at numerous ports, and only unpack once.
      The problem regarding affordability in the future is that due to the upgrades, now your bar is set pretty high! Not a bad thing, just reality, and I understand it completely.
      We always choose a balcony stateroom - partly so I don't feel claustrophobic in my cabin, and partly because we love to sit out and enjoy the fresh air & view. Costly, yes, but worth it, especially with multiple Alaska itineraries and an awesome 12 night Best of Scandinavia cruise, all taken on Celebrity. We save some money not dining in specialty restaurants, because their main dining is delicious enough for us. We don't drink enough per day for a drinks pkg, we just charge our drinks to the cabin & have never approached the daily dollar amount of the drinks pkg. With so many excursions off the ship on our port intensive itineraries, it's just not cost effective for us.
      Have also cruised on Disney & Royal Caribbean; would go on both again with the right itinerary and price. I'm hoping to book a British Isles cruise in the very near future, again on Celebrity, and in a veranda stateroom. Royal & Celebrity have reciprocal loyalty tiers, which is an added bonus to save money on wifi, laundry, etc.
      Whenever you're able to cruise again, happy sailing!!⛴️

      @peter_bazinet 2 місяці тому

      @@SharonPerson-hm9ds Thank you so much for the information and the well wishes. Although I did really enjoy the specialty restaurants, I can see the logic in sticking with the main dining room. The food was indeed delicious there as well and I could see myself there every evening. I mainly purchased the drink package as I'm a Hendricks gin fan, so I wanted to be able to enjoy that without extra cost as well as the free bottles of wine that are on the list for dinner as well as the champagne. I'm pretty sure it paid for itself in my circumstance. Like you, I would feel claustrophobic without a balcony. And I loved the aft balcony. I didn't experience any additional noise, but then again, I sleep like a log. It was so nice, I read five books on that cruise sitting on that balcony. The one setback was that since it was an east cast cruise in September, I packed warm clothes for the trip. It was pool weather the entire journey until we arrived in Quebec City, when it immediately was chilly. There were so many people by the pool. Had I known . . . . . . .

    • @SharonPerson-hm9ds
      @SharonPerson-hm9ds 2 місяці тому +1

      @peter_bazinet With a multiple port itinerary, I check the weather for each city we're visiting a few days before we leave, then pack accordingly.
      Last year in Europe we had some really warm days with lots of sun, and then some cool days with pouring rain. We packed mostly short-sleeved tops and layered those with lightweight hoodies or fleece tops; the top layer is always a waterproof jacket, which I also use on the plane.
      Celebrity Apex has an indoor pool that's for adults only, so we could swim every day, no matter the weather outside.
      Sunset veranda is my favorite type of cabin, and we've had one on almost all of our cruises. We usually order room service breakfast, and eat it out on the balcony, especially on port days. Relaxing start to the day, and, you can have your first cup of coffee wearing your bathrobe just enjoying the ocean view!

    • @peter_bazinet
      @peter_bazinet 2 місяці тому

      @@SharonPerson-hm9ds That's one thing I didn't do, breakfast on the balcony. I think I was too excited to get into the port and try the food there. I'll have to remember if I ever get the opportunity to cruise again. I also don't know why I didn't check the weather ahead of time. Baltimore should have been an indication of what the weather would be like, but by that time, we were already packed and ready to board. The Alaska cruise sounds amazing. I may have to seriously look into that one.

    • @SharonPerson-hm9ds
      @SharonPerson-hm9ds 2 місяці тому +1

      @peter_bazinet I am definitely not a morning person, and some of our excursions are early, so I get my caffeine as quickly as possible to 'wake up' and get ready to roll. It also saves me the long trek to and from the breakfast venue when we order room service. I'm no spring chicken and I'd rather save energy for the ports!.
      I've been to Alaska five times, all on Celebrity; fell in love with the state our first time there, and try to go back every few years. We usually do different excursions each trip, except at Icy Strait Point - that's our favorite whale watching port. Rode the zip line there on our last trip, too, in addition to the whale watching.
      We've been to Denali a few times (saw the Big 5 animals once), and when in Juneau, we always stop at Crepe Escape.
      Biggest drawback to Alaska is the cost. The plane trip, the hotel the day before, the cruise, the excursions - all usually pricier than the lower 48. BUT SO WORTH IT!
      Was told the fjords in Norway are phenomenal - now that's on my bucket list, too.
      What were your favorite East Coast ports? I considered a trip like that for the fall.

    I have a suggestion that may or may not solve the FTTF problems that you talked about. Maybe have a special place like the MDR or theater or some other large room where they could drop off their luggage get a numbered receipt from someone monitoring it and then , when rooms are available, they can pick up their luggage and go to their cabin. They could limit this to the FTTF people whereby they still can put their luggage where it is safe and continue to check out the ship. Seems this is only a problem with the FTTF participants as the other priority members are used to it and usually not a problem. Just a thought.
