  • Welcome to the Off-Season Series™.
Now that the MLS, USL, NWSL and College Soccer seasons are all but done, I am teaming up with top level goalkeepers to bring you guys some quality content. My primary goal is to help them improve and stay sharp in their off-seasons, while also offering an inside look into my training and philosophies.
    ____________________________________________________________________
    In todays episode,
I am working with Armando from San Antonio Fc and Jake Fenlasson from Saint Louis Fc.
I put together this session to work on the "Transferring of Weight from the Off Foot to the Plant Foot". I wanted both Armando and Jake to become more cerebral with their footwork and understand that this technique is much more common than they think.
Again, I personally believe that the goalkeeping position is very practical. A lot of what we as coaches teach stems from the idea that the concepts essentially ‘just make sense’. For example, there’s a reason why we open our legs slightly when we perform a forward dive/front scoop, because that creates space for us to sink into; giving our hands and knee the chance to get down low enough to provide a barrier.
Now let’s shift gears to these drills and my practical approach to it.
A lot of us tend to have active feet when preparing for a shot, helping us avoid being caught flat footed. And once we see where the shot is being hit (either to our right or to our left), our feet have that split second to get back to the ground in order to be able to plant and push to make the save. So when performing this plyo drill, it’s important to understand the concept that I like to teach called “transferring of weight from your off foot to our plant foot”.
What this essentially means is that when your feet get back to the ground, you’re either pushing off of your right foot and transferring that weight to your left foot, or vice versa. **The amount of weight you transfer depends on the speed, height and distance of the shot**. This drill is a great way to focus on that exact technique. I have @armando_samuel1 first isolating his off foot and then transferring that weight to his plant foot depending on how the shot is hit.
Thank you guys for tuning in!

Would love to see a session with a bit of playing out from the back. Receiving back passes under pressure, opening up with the ball and switching the play, all that jazz. Perhaps some distribution from the floor, short, medium and long range and maybe some from the hands? Throwing and side volleys, stuff like that? Just a thought.
