This whole video series is great. Thanks for taking the time to do this! Nice to see the roots of where a lot of sounds in modern dance music are coming from.
Had one in 1975. It was my first synth. Paid 1,600.00 for it. It came with several overlay templates, one which was "Frankenstein". Wish I still had it. Looked great on top of my mellotron :-)
So great! And then to know that the 2600 basically was a cheaper compromise that Alan Robert Pearlman made to bring the ARP 2500 to a larger public. Even though launched as a compromise, the 2600 to me still is a dream machine. It actually had a duophonic keyboard, made with a simple electronic trick. Don´t know of any other synth manufacturer that had that. Looking forward to the next videos in this series!
It's funny but years ago when I first watched these videos I never actually thought I'd actually get to own one, and it's so cool to now be rewatching them for tips on using my very own :-)
I have ARP 2600 on my last album and my upcoming album. Performed by Maurizio Guarini from Goblin. :) My last album also has Chamberlin, Orchestron, Optigan, Mellotron.... Some of which are also on my soon to be released album. Thank you for sharing about this great instrument! I love having the real instruments vs samples.
What a gorgeous smooth analogue sound. I wish I had the money to be able to afford one of these legendary synths, sometimes emulation just doesn't cut it. Even when you do have the money to purchase on of these, I imagine finding one that is for sale could be quite difficult as I sure wouldn't want to sell mine if i had one. Great video.
Thanks for re-uploading these videos in higher quality. But honestly, Marc, I don't hear such a big difference compared to the older version. UA-cam's audio re-encoding still messes-up the sound badly. Especially with sawtooth waves, or anything with a high harmonics content. The video looks as clean as it can be though, considering it was probably recorded with a standard definition video camera. I wish YT would use another format than this crappy Flash format...I can always dream I suppose?
Great video and a wonderful series. Any chance you could share the 'Chaos' patch from round about 6 minutes. It may be higher quality upload but not good enough to make out the tangle of cables. Cheers!
Like your work so much, it's an awesome piece of collection, understanding is one more gift, the real ARP have something more dirty inside than what I remembered on like softwares. Was dreaming about one many years ago, never could buy the real thing. Thanks
Things like 5:13 always put into perspective that some of my favorite acid artists don't actually spend 210394781203948 hours on a track making insane sounds, they just have interesting equipment and patch them up like they've lost their mind.
Hmm... All synth sites says that this thing is monophonic, but you can see and hear Joe Zawinul play chords on it in the Weather Report footage from Offenbach, 1978. It also looks like he gots presets on it, because he changes sounds instantaniously. Weird...
You Really are an inspiration Marcus old chap! I Can't believe how different you look without all that hair by the way!! lol! You've got some great Synth Play Skills aswel. There's a great difference in playing the Piano, & playing the Synth. A very Fun Vid.. I Wish you had done an Introduction Series!!! Ha Ha! No, But seriously man.. I Do really enjoy your Videos. the more you are in them.. the Better. :)
A question for anyone who has had the chance to play with the original classic Hardware ARP 2600 and the software emulation version by Arturia. How close does the sofware plugin Arturia Arp 2600 come to emulating the signature analogue sounds of the original hardware version? Does it come close, or not even remotely in the same ball park?
Great video, but i would not have to program this machine... Quite complicated for me.. But you have my respect, Marc... Whatever you doing with your synths, you are doing it good...
Did the 2600 have the same problem with going out of tune faster and faster as it aged? (like the ARP Odyssey). Donald Fagen of Steely Dan fame eventually go so frustrated he tossed his Odyssey out the window of a tall building and then had the wreckage made into wall art.
@PhotoAnimationGuy You are being sarcastic, aren't you?-You know there's an army out there that would come straight for you if they saw this comment! :D

What were you doing for work in 1975. That was a lot of money back then.
All time great synth. Marc you really know your synth stuff and I appreciate your vids!
just finished the series. absolutely spectacular. thanks for all the insight.

It's amazing how much of its sound it borrows from Moog thanks to the filter.
Hey, thank you and thanks for watching!

+ChristineLeakeyMusic That's because you're cool. :D
Haha, thanks! Takes one to know one! ;)
Exceptionally informative video series. Thanx!
Wow what a machine, incredible. Especially enjoyed the sample an hold noise moment, very cool
It happened, it’s coming!
sound amazing. thank you for your very nice review.
Great gear and great playing.
Awesome.

Great video.
damn i remember I was in highschool when I found this video, here I am 9 years later coming back with a more serious look into this world.
Excellent! Welcome back! I've just been hangin' out here since then. :D
Chad is that you?
I heard a chirp sound that sounds like a Soft Cell sequence.
It's possibilities are insane!

dude, that wicked modulated chaos patch! more of those!
6:46 blows me away!
I need to know if that melody is an excerpt from anywhere or if you wrote it yourself.

+JockoFlocko Not even in the same ball park. However, the TimeWARP 2600 by WareOutWare is spot on!
That's what I thought Adam. Kontakt sample packs sound much more warm and analogue than the Arturia Arp.
what a great sound. it’s my dream to own one of these someday.
lol bet you’re pretty stoked then!
Great video, but i would not have to program this machine... Quite complicated for me.. But you have my respect, Marc... Whatever you doing with your synths, you are doing it good...
The Arp 2600 is such a different instrument that you simply can't compare them.
@Farksisten Maybe he had a couple extra ARPs under the floor. :P
Ao minuto 5.30 parece que a maquina estava afalar contigo que som do outro mundo.!!!Parabéns!
8:09 with a crunchy euro drum beat would rule
what would you call your music style?\somekind of funk?
Marc, in your opinion which synth is better, the model D or 2600?
Hmmm. I always thought they all had 3 oscillators.
Can't beat the sample and hold on this or the Odyssey.
What is the name of the music piece right in the beginning of this video?
It's a song called "Astral Daytrip" by my band Godfrey's Cordial. You can find it on Soundcloud if you search for Godfrey's Cordial.
My favorite part is the facial expressions at 5:50, hahah
Thumbs up if you are here because of the Korg Arp 2600

Woah, it's the outro song
It is!
FAB! many thanks!

I have just got the chance to buy one of theses i have got a Moog model D and a Moog voyager do you think that there as good as the Moog sound ,,,
4:55! Yes!
mmmm theres a DIY project of this beast
@AutomaticGainsay Everyone remembers their first first. ;P
It just occurred to me that you could be keanu reeves' brother 😁
in the best possible way of course, he's a great actor.
***** well he's not the best
Marc! You used to be young!
+Herr Absurd This was only a few years ago! More accurately, I used to APPEAR young. ;)
8:20 - sounds "throaty".
Looks like Reason
An Arp 2600 for playing boogie-woogie ? Jesus Christ!
@lkjlkjlkjlkjlkjlkj6 btw that was tongue in cheek!
@PhotoAnimationGuy
