Great , unique glider! You are lucky Man ! Thanks for this video! Few times I was looking for some information about ls5 but There od little about it. If there will be more posiiblities , Please give more vid and opinion ( advantages/disadvantages) about ls5 comparison to other open class gliders Thumbs up for You! Tom
Hey Tomasz, I appreciate your Question. As far as I know was the LS 5 planed in the late 1970s. The Planes to compete with arrived on the Market in 1981. It was the Nimbus 3 and the ASW 22. The LS5 was still constructed to be a good Climber rather than a Racer. So the plane is very light. Empty Mass 264kg!!! This is unbelievable light for an open Class Glider with 23m Wingspan. Nimbus 3 und ASW 22 were distinctively heavier. The Nimbus 3 ca. 400kg and the ASW 22 even a bit heavier. The difference in take-off Weight was even bigger... The LS5 580 kg, Nimbus 3 and ASW 22 750 kg. The biggest difference between those Gliders apart from the Weight was the profile of the WIng. The LS5 Wing is thicker! It produces more uplift and therefor more drag. If you compare the Polar Diagram of the Gliders you can see, that the P. Diagram of the LS 5 becomes rapidly steeper towards faster speeds. So it was clear to everybody, the LS 5 was not able to compete with Nimbus 3 and ASW 22 in a Competition. There for Rolladen Scheider decided not to build the Glider. But Klaus Mies was allowed to build it and Wolf Lemke helped to make it happen. So what does that mean to the Pilot, if you fly the LS 5! If you fly for yourself, it means nothing! The LS 5 is a very easy to fly open Class glider. The Glider helps you to center Thermals. It tells you very clear where to look for them. The Lift-Distribution (Auftriebsverteilung) along the Wing is perfectly balanced. That with the (light) Weight and the uncomplicated flight Characteristics make the LS 5 real fun to fly. Usualy there is no better climber in a Thermal. You can compete with KA 8 easily. For a Glider with that Wingspan its quite agile. Fun to fly in the Mountains! In weak conditions unbeatable. If it gets fast, you are hopeless lost! For that reason, you want to fly the LS 5 always with Water. This is when the Glider feels perfecty balanced... When I fly with modern 18m Racers, I need Water otherwise it doesn’t work so well to fly together. The Wingload is too different. Last Year I had a flight with a Nimbus 3 in Serres. That was really fun. I was loaded with Water the Nimbus 3 just a bit. It was easy to fly together. My resume was, that the LS 5 is more agile, happy to take narrow thermals.... where the Nimbus 3 liked it straighter... If it was not too fast, I could easily keep up. We had a lot of fun this flight. ua-cam.com/video/P3Nsa2uog3A/v-deo.html So what can I say, I`m so glad that I can fly this Glider... Cheers Thomas

Who did the winglets? They look similar to the DG Neo wingless. What was the reason the factory did not take it to production? I was told in the early 90s when I had a LS6b that they did not take it forward because they had twisting issues with the wing which limited Vne, and the low volumes given the Nimbus3/4 and Asw22 and ASH25 they could not justify the investment to sort it out. But is this just "bar room" talk?
Hey Ariss, the Winglets are selfmade. Great improvement.... So far as I know and the Information is from the guy who built... the LS5 had no issues with Vne. Wolf Lemke constructed the glider in the late 70, because he wantetd to build an open glass glider. This project had no priority so it took a while. By the time they finished the moulds, Nimb 3 an ASW 22 apeared. They had much thinner Wings, capable for faster speed by less sink. It was clear, the LS5 is probably nice to fly but could not compeed. Wolf Lemke decided not to build it. Long story... one student who constructed the aileron mixer asked Wolf Lemke if he can build it. They agreed that Klaus Mies can build it under the supervision of Wolf Lemke. It became a LS Glider. First Flight Wolf Lemke, Second Flight Flight Klaus Mies , third Flight Helmut Reichmann... around 01.05.1986 . I'm the lucky one who can flythe glider now. Glideratio 55, very agile, a climbingmoster.
@@Alpha-III Thank you, having flown LS1f, LS6b and LS8a and really found them not only to be beautifully coordinated but also to give great feedback in the climb I can imagine it is good to fly.
@@Alpha-III In a comment below you mentioned 264kg empty. I'm not sure if Ruestmasse includes measurement equipment in the Idaflieg case. I'll for the numbers from the weight report. Thanks!
Thanks for this video! Is the LS5 heavy on the controls? And hard to have enough yaw with such a short fuselage relative to the wingspan? How is it to land in short field?
Thank you for your Questions.... The LS 5 is quit easy on the Stick. Basicly you fly the Glieder with two fingers. The Ruder is a bit heavier because of its size but that does not really matter. For its Wingspan its very agile. Very good to fly in the Mountains. Because you can put the Flaps in a 60 degree Landingkonfiguration, you can make really steep aproaches and very short Landings! Touchdownspeed in that configuration is aproximatly 60 km/h!
When I saw the title, I thought it was a typo. Very cool!

LS 5: Empty Mass 361
(Ruestmass probably 371), Max Weight 580 with Water.
Thank you!
The LS-5 polar should be in XCSoar from version 7.29 onwards. It is not yet released.
XCSoar 7.29has just been released. It contains the LS-5 polar.
@@RoelBaardman How does that Happen?
LS 5 runs on XC Soar!

sind die wölbklappen und quertuder überlagert? so wie bei schleicher flugzeugen? oder ist es komplett getrennt
sind mittels einem speziell konstruierten Mischer überlagert!
Out of curiosity I ordered the LS5 polar from Idaflieg. I'd like to add it to XCSoar.
How much water balast is the LS5 allowed to carry?
120 Liter.... still not enough....

need to Check, not to tell the wrong numbers....

@@Alpha-III Do the large flaps and large flap deflection (60°) make spoilers unnecessary? Do you ever wish you had spoilers on this glider? Thanks!
The LS 5 comes with Spoilers. With Spoilers and full Flaps you can fly very steep aproaches and land on a very short Field.
Are the molds still available?
there is nothing left.... so I have to keep it carefully
Too bad! Was the Polar ever measured? What Polar do you use in the flight computer?
It was! idaflieg.de/?page_id=1552
