  • As part of an active recovery day, Abbie decides to take on one of the most popular fells in the Lakes, Haystacks. She walks from Buttermere, following the blissful lakeside path before ascending to the summit of the characteristic crag. The views over the surrounding landscape are some of their favourite in the National Park and a fitting reward after the scramble to the top. They then passes the Innominate Tarn, the resting place of the hillwalking legend himself, Alfred Wainwright, and Blackbeck Tarn, before exploring some the disused Honister Quarries and descending back to Gatesgarth Farm and Buttermere Lake. It's a route with views galore, friendly faces, scrambles, blissful tarns, open skies, egg sandwiches and an abundance of wildlife.

Abbie I keep coming back to this video, not only because it’s informative but for the little section you did whilst eating your apple. People should try to learn more of what they are waking through and understand there’s more to looking in the distance

What could be better on a chiily, grey Monday morning in East Dorset than sitting with a cup of coffee and a biscuit being transported to a sunny fell walk with Abbie. Such an infectious smile and so enthusiastic, with beautiful views, it makes a great start to the week. Many thanks.

I did this in September 2020 - weather was good going up, but then it started to rain, and the summit was covered in clouds so I couldn't look down on Buttermere and Crummockwater. Just gives me a reason to go back!

Abbie what a wonderful video that took me back to "MY" favourite place. I've been up Haystacks and the surrounding fells many times guiding friends and family. Camped there many times and have some wonderful memories of evenings in the pubs. I now have arthritis in both knees and can't do the walks and climbs I used to do anymore but this video has taken me back and put a big smile on my face. Thanks for that. PS I follow you on Facebook as well as UA-cam keep up the good work you really are a breath of fresh air XX

Another great video Abbie , as usual - just one tiny gripe- there are only 2 named lakes in the district - Lake Windermere and Bassenthwaite Lake, all the others are "waters" or "meres" . That said ,the farmer's wife were I am lucky enough to have a "sited caravan" in Threlkeld, always refers to Derwentwater as "Keswick Lake" , so much so that I now follow her lead and call it the same !😆Keep on filming Abbie and I hope your achy knee recovers quickly !

Thanks for this Abbie. I bagged Haystacks around 5 years ago along mostly the same route. I actually dropped my expensive weatherproof map around the place you found the sunglasses but didn't realise (perhaps it's old Alfred's way of keeping a piece of fellow wanderers there, by pinching a bit of kit 🤔). Sadly, I also lost my mojo just after doing this walk and haven't been out treking for a long while. I'm hoping your videos will get me back on track! 🙂👍

Enjoyed the video journey very much Abble.
Used to camp at Gatesgarth in the 70's, Buttermere didn't seem quite as busy as it is these days but such is progress.
Have you ever visited where Fanny Mercer fell in 1887?, unfortunately she fell down the steep ridge of Fleetwith Pike and never recovered from her injuries.
The cross is still there, overlooking the field at Gatesgarth, as a warning to others.
    Take care and well done.

Nice, we are off this weekend to the lakes to walk and fish. We are going to climb Scarfell Pyke! Thanks for this video! We did Haystacks yesterday but left it quite late in the day to start, meaning we had scramble down the side in the pitch black... which when you don’t know the route, was quite terrifying!! Because the drop to the left looked like an abyss 😨 so it was quite interesting to watch your vlog and see what we did in but in daylight!!
Safe to say we won’t be doing it in the dark again. We’ve learnt our lesson- start earlier!!!

I do actually agree with you, the film I found was more about Abbie Barnes than wherever she was as most of it was her talking to the camera. I do agree that a lot of work has gone into the video but as the late great Elvis Presley might say '..a little less conversation.........' but I think a lot less talking to the camera.

@dashboard193 Yes but this is Abbie's channel so she can include whatever content she wishes, not what others think she should include.

@@deangarner6126 Indeed she can and by making it public she invites comment and criticism not just fawning attention.

Hey Abbie, silly question, but which is the most beautiful side of Buttermere if we are to only walk along one side? Thanks
