Hi y’all, that’s me up there. When I got out of the Army, I went to Montana for a couple years to work on a horse ranch. Today, I’m home in Kentucky pressure washing homes.
Well done! This good after only two years and no horse experience! WOW. Keep up the good work. Your horses touch the lives of so many people w/ loved ones at the cemetery. Thanks for sharing.🐴😷👍
Blows my mind at the level of care we provide our animals, meanwhile we have 10's of millions fighting for any sort of medical care. I just can't help but think you guys are way more qualified and skilled then most dentist I've met.
I'm in similar boat. No horse experience and needed work. My brother in law has been a farrier 25 years and his back has been bothering him so he needed help. Been training with him 3 weeks now. So far I just pull and clinch shoes and just started dressing the hoof wall. Learning a lot.
Keep at it. If u really want to b a real farrier, u will b working under him for many many years. Dont get impatient & jump out on ur own too soon. This has happened many times to us & out of the dozens my husband has tried to train only 1 could b considered a Journeyman level farrier. It's a long road & will break ur back but it's a dying art & needs to b preserved.
I served on Fort Myers, VA and those horses get the best care available. Those horses are a part of the burial team for Arlington National Cemetery which includes: A Casket Team A Color Guard A Firing Party A BuglerA Military Band A Military Chaplain An escort platoon
I LOVE Friesians, as they're solid black, gorgeous like this girl, with the exception of the little tell-tale bit of white mark on her forehead, so I wonder if she's part Friesian, since they're larger than Quarter horses, are intelligent, patient for Vet & Farrier. Friesians are considered "bomb proof" & Excell at Equestrian, Dressage, Drafting, or just plain old trail riding. So yeah, that's probably why she's good as gold, although I don't see the characteristics 'feathers' on her quarters, (maybe shaved to maintain the clean outline look needed for their tasks) which is why I'm thinking 'part' Friesian. Lovely horse.😍
Interesting. Learned a lot from this video. He’s a lucky guy to have that job in the army! Thank you for your service and I’m sure the horses thank you as well.
I never thought about it until now but of course the Army would have well trained Farriers for all their horses . I bet these guys are excellently trained and ready and prepared to step into civvy life with a RARE talent.
Actually, it is the back muscles that do the most work. Try squeezing someones leg between you knees when the are trying to pull it away or leaning on you. Most of the horses lean on you to compensate for the leg being off the ground. Your back now has to hold up at least 1/4 of the horses weight, and squeeze your knees together, while bent in a half crouch. You don't want to wrestle a farrier, he has strong muscles in places you don't even have.
Without Horses we would still be living in the stone age. Humans and horses have a deep primal bond just like we do with dogs but with dogs it's even deeper. Without horses and dogs I think humans wouldn't be where we are today they saved humanity in many ways.
I personally know both of the previous farriers for the caisson horses. I apprenticed for the last civilian caisson farrier that the army had before they sent this guy to school. They didn't treat him very well since he was a civilian. He is a great farrier though.
Countryboy Houchin How do u measure a great farrier? This boy was putting a back shoe on a front foot. One can barely learn to clench properly n 2 years, let alone trim, nail, & shape. Is the US CALVARY MANUAL still being read?
Anime Aunty it did look like that shoe was a little pointed. Needs to be rounder for a front foot. If a person can’t learn to clinch in a few weeks they ain’t going to make it as a horseshoer.
Wow, great video. I was born, raised and lived most of my life not too far from Ft. Myer. My wife and I recently relocated from NoVa to Houston Texas and I'm missing home, the autumn colors, the excitement of DC, etc., so this video really hit the spot. Thanks for posting.
I'd like to ride along with you. It'd be an Honor to hand you a nail. I'm a Canadian Airborne Infantry Veteran of 18 years. Jumped with the US Army many times. Did a tour of Somalia in 93 and Bosnia in 97. Second term Farrier student and will be available next summer when I graduate in April. Whoah. Thank You For Your Service Farrier.
the fuck are you going on about if you own horses you need to learn to do this yourself i did this when i was 15 on my uncles farm its a more common farm skill than you would think
Scarlet too bad you make fun of some one who had such severe ADHD when he was a kid the teachers gave up on trying to teach me punctuation because i could read and write which was good enough for them you know the only people who lunch ad hominem attacks are either people losing at arguments or just genuine sack of shit human beings huh kind of funny my lack of punctuation never effected my residency and later military career
Is there an army MOS for this job? i used to watch the shoe the mules on the farm; it was amazing how they done it with out hurting the animal. thanks for a very good video and bring back some memories of my younger days.
I know nothing about farriering but I presume when he says 18- 24 weeks that is how long the shoes last but they are OBVIOUSLY trimmed several times during this time.
It would be interesting to invent some type of belt sander to trim the hooves. We have the angle grinder and the snips and the files etc. but it seems to me using a best sander would some industrial strength sand paper would make a nice flat surface. The ideal situation would be to raise the animal up in the air using a contraption similar to an car engine lift, then place the hoof on the best sander. I am not a farrier and this might already be available and might not work but my mind is always thinking of ways to build a better mouse trap. I have no idea if it would be better.

Have you decided you don't like the farrier business? You seemed confident and competent :)
@@bonniemccormack1361 Maybe it's just me but I'd miss being around em all day.
Horseshoe Pressure Washing good move. You’re better off.
I liked your video and your explanation!
That’s pretty cool dude good for you man
I'm 60 years old and still working as a farrier. Good to watch this young man working. Thanks for your service.
Came across this video in 2021. Such a kind and humble young man. He obviously really cares about the horses he works with.

The man who knows what he does not yet know is truly wise.
Anime Aunty it ain’t no dying art there are shoers under every rock nowadays. Between where I live and Dallas there are over seventy.
Thank you for your service to our country and to these horses!
Suuuuper, how relaxed the horse is!
The head is all the way down...
Greetings from Germany, where horses are also been loved!
You have become remarkably well skilled and knowledgeable in what is not a long time. Fifty plus years later and I'm still learning about shoeing.
That mare is a sweet girl. And gorgeous. Very well loved by her owner.
very satisfying to watch
Pyskotic
Hard work with dignity.....rarely do you get both in the same profession.
Thanks for your service! Both for the horses and the country! 💕
What a great looking horse!
Well done ! You handle her very well. Thank you for sharing.🐴
Very nice to watch, calm and professional

4:16 the horse was watching him finish it up and then as soon as she put wait on it she bobbed her head out of excitement lol, think he did a good job
Rewarding watching a true professional enjoying his job.
always a joy to watch a professional work no matter the task......
That's one well behaved horse.
Such a wonderful pair of beautiful animals.
Best blacksmith I ever encountered was an elderly gent who made his career doing the same job you are watching Mr. Morrison do in this video.
Pound for pound, I bet this farrier is one of the strongest guys in the US military......that is one tough job.....but a rewarding one....
+FMHammyJ yeah never mess with a farrier no matter what his height... this man can lift an anvil.
+Laura Hawk I had a friend who is a farrier. A woman. She's not even that big. It's a way of knowing how to work.
definitely strongest forearm at least

I like how the horse nods his head in approval of his new shoe
very nice video and plan to show it to my agriculture students! Thank you.

Former Caisson Plt member here . Glad to see things haven't changed much. Keep up the good work boys!

I like seeing how he uses a small hammer to tap in the shoe nails and the horse has learned it will not be hurt by this man.

I'm seriously curious how he got that MOS. Did he sign up and say.. hey give me something with animals?
Wow nice good job guy
