I do feel that the more you make off of society, the more you should pay back to supporting society, either voluntarily or through taxes. No individual needs to hoard money in the 100's of millions to billions of dollars.

Absolutely, Benjamin Franklin made an excellent argument for the democratization of wealth and property in 1783:
"The Remissness of our People in Paying Taxes is highly blameable; the Unwillingness to pay them is still more so. I see, in some Resolutions of Town Meetings, a Remonstrance against giving Congress a Power to take, as they call it, the People's Money out of their Pockets, tho' only to pay the Interest and Principal of Debts duly contracted. They seem to mistake the Point. Money, justly due from the People, is their Creditors' Money, and no longer the Money of the People, who, if they withold it, should be compell'd to pay by some Law."
"All Property, indeed, except the Savage's temporary Cabin, his Bow, his Matchcoat, and other little Acquisitions, absolutely necessary for his Subsistence, seems to me to be the Creature of public Convention. Hence the Public has the Right of Regulating Descents, and all other Conveyances of Property, and even of limiting the Quantity and the Uses of it. All the Property that is necessary to a Man, for the Conservation of the Individual and the Propagation of the Species, is his natural Right, which none can justly deprive him of: But all Property superfluous to such purposes is the Property of the Publick, who, by their Laws, have created it, and who may therefore by other Laws dispose of it, whenever the Welfare of the Publick shall demand such Disposition. He that does not like civil Society on these Terms, let him retire and live among Savages. He can have no right to the benefits of Society, who will not pay his Club towards the Support of it."

Social Security taxes should be paid on much larger amounts than current law requires. And there are massive loopholes for wealthy individuals that classify most of their income as “unearned” so no payroll taxes are charged. Those need to be closed.

As a 64 yr old working to help others in my career, mostly just making it month to month, social security is going to be a lot of what I depend on. It won’t cover all my costs for sure.
Rent controls or roll backs for Seniors should be a part of social security. Rents tied to cpi would help, and increases frozen for tenants 55 or 60 and over even better.
Roll backs perhaps as a HUD program to just actual inflation tied to what properties originally rented at.
The rental market is trying to tie itself to mortgages and bubble real estate values vs what is affordable for people generally but especially retirees and anyone nearing retirement.
I sure hope there are more in the Congress that will help you do the right things, and i hope in younger generations like AOC to lead with their good consciences 🙏🙏🙏
You are a role model of leadership by and for The People.

One thing we Need to do is raise the amount paid into social security for every com0any that does nit offer a pension plan that is not part of the wall street 401ks or lra's. They should pay 25% into social security as there contribution to retirement. One thing that is good about this idea is that like the 2008 collapse of the world economy we lost pensions and one fact is they get stolen a lot more than you think. Companies that do offer a pension plan should have to hand over the money to the government for safe keeping. While pensions disappeared back in the 2008 debacle social security still sent out checks while the rich CEO's got 60 million dollar golden parachutes. Many people lost everything and many are now living in cars or on the streets. If you have BIG business you have to have BIG Government regulations to control them because they seem to have no c9ntrol over themselves, which the last 40 years plus has proven.

Many of the people and elders that I know only get around $973 a month in social security, some are homeless, some live in section 8 housing or low income housing, some in senior living facilities and some live with their other family members. A few get food stamps of about $167 while others get $30 per month. The Medicaid and Medicare program takes about $60 to $150 out of their checks every month and they have to pay co-pays for their medications and doctor visits, medication is $3 to $30 dollars per prescription and doctors visits are $ 30 to $50 per visit. Section 8 housing costs 1/3rd of their income. These people on social security are really living off of about $95 per week after paying rent, medical, and doctor visits. Phone service costs $45 per month, car insurance $100 per month (if they have one), internet $45-80 per month, heating fuel, electricity, and water/sewage are other expanses. So that $30 to $167 in food stamps might feed them if they are lucky. These elders need more funding to live not just barely survive.

Wrong Mr Sanders. People who are wealthy do not need social security. The program can be quickly modified by passing a law to block people making more than $400K a year from withdrawing anything from Social Security. Shrink the number of people getting checks.
But also in that quick law change, remove the annual maximum income requiring deductions from paychecks. It is counter-intuitive that high earners don't pay their equal percentage of income into the program, but still get to take the largest checks out of the program when they reach their eligible age.
And of course, in more comprehensive legislation, change the rules that allow CEO's to reclassify workers into independent contractors, to avoid paying the employer's share into the SS program.
It could even be needed to charge social security fee equivalents on goods and services IMPORTED into the US, since CEO's often outsource work to those other countries just to avoid the employer's share of SS contributions.

The poverty level right now is $1400 and change per month. There are many senior citizens whose Social Security is a lot less than that. Which also means that they rely on subsidies by either charity or government for their housing, their food, their medical care. so they’re getting the money, one way or another but they’re having to jump through hoops and apply for programs. They don’t understand and many of them still at this point do not own or know how to use a computer, let alone a cell phone. That will change over the next two decades, however, most government agencies want you to apply online. Which means they have to hire a broker or an accountant or a lawyer to do these things for them. How much more do our senior citizens have to pay just to survive?

  • @Lyn777

I don't know if his solution is viable, but something needs to be done. Social Security really does need to be fixed!. Pensions have either dried up or are very small. Many people work decades sometimes doing back breaking work, only to end up poor. At least Sen. Sanders is trying to do something. I'm very disappointed that neither Trump nor Biden has actually done something positive regarding Social Security. Sen Sanders should be surrounded by people backing his plan. Guess that the other progressives, especially the young ones, don't care about older people. True! As a Democrat and a Senior Citizen I am very disappointed in my party and Pres. Biden! Like many Seniors I vote every time the poles open and I'll certainly factor in this topic when I vote.
