The second PS3 game in this series (SOCOM 4 Special Forces/US Navy Seals) has a cosmetic feature I have never seen anywhere else: they recorded every line of dialogue outside of cutscenes twice: one normal and one with the actor sounding winded, in case the player was sprinting while the dialogue was happening. It's that kind of attention to detail you just don't see much anymore.

The GREATEST “tactical shooter” franchise in the history of gaming… I can still remember walking into my friend’s dorm room across the hall and seeing him headset on, fragging out. My life was never the same… What made multiplayer SO GODDAMN GOOD was down to many factors. First and foremost, the game was developed by the team that actually developed/built/implemented the “VR” style training utilized by SOGs of the time period. Second, the title SOCOM: US Navy SEALs isn’t just bullshit, Zipper devs spent LOADS of time at MacDill AFB (which is where SOCOM is actually located) and had to get “authorization” for tactics, theory, etc. before they could include it. 3rd, no regeneration of health, no respawning, no bullshit, you die, you’re dead until the next round. 4th, the community! 5th, THE MAPS!! 21 of them at launch! 6th, the “gun play” was amazing!! Sprinting, jumping, hell, even walking affected accuracy and really made you think about the “risk/reward” of any decisions. I won’t just keep listing, but just know I could… This franchise needs a reboot and there’s still a rabid fan base that wants it!

SOCOM's online was always the main focus of these games with the friend list, clan system, stats and competitive ranks it was revolutionary. This series as well as Zipper Interactive's downfall began with SOCOM 3 unfortunately. I had my fun with that game, but the complete and unnecessary gameplay overhaul and unpredictable gun spray mechanics killing most of the skill required to aim really split the community. The vast majority of people that say SOCOM 3 is the best in the series have either not played SOCOM II or didn't play it in its prime.
The single players were fun, and this review is incredibly fair, they don't tell the whole story of SOCOM's hay day.

ok i was stuck on this one for a while, what i noticed is that if you if you grab the map first and pickle after, the helicopter doesn't spawn for a long time. so play the mission like you normally would, clear out the prison from hostiles, grab the map first and grab pickle. after that hq will tell you that the helicopter is on the way, ignore that and run to extract. the helicopter should spawn by the time you arrive to extract.

    Can't believe I missed this.
I wish we got a HD Remaster of the series that comes bundled with Remastered PSP titles, so we can make use of that cool save-link feature in the PSP/PS2 Games.
One Detail I love in the PSP Entry Tactical Strike (which actually takes cues from Full Spectrum Warrior of all things.), is that your "Language Selection" for your voice acting is actually choosing your SF Group, such as playing as Korean Special Forces or German Special Forces (And including a bunch of obscure Korean guns.), the Text is still English but your Team/Command will speak the language of that Nation rather than English. (As well as different character models and names.)
Socom was my first Tactical Shooter and it left an impression, I do think this series still somewhat holds up, they aren't perfect but the death/damage animations are great and I really wish we had more proper death animations nowadays rather than "Enemy Ragdolls on the spot."

With the popularity of games like R6 Siege or CS:GO and their own utter disregard for the legacy of game franchises, you'd think Sony would have tried to make their own Siege-clone.
It'd be completely removed from the OG games, of course, but I don't see why they don't do that so they can trot out the name. Make a bunch of unbelievable characters like Siege, design smaller maps with more personality like SOCOM 1 and 2 had, then you might have something that'd approach success. It'd be so cynical and without soul, I'm legitimately surprised they haven't.

I just want too know how games made so long ago, can have more atmosphere than games of today?
I am not talking about nostalgia.... I am talking about level design, objectives, atmosphere.
This game had more tense moments, better level design and more atmosphere than lets say..... Ghost Recon.
Don't get me wrong, i love my Series X, S and PS5..... But games like
Medal Of Honour, Medal Of Honour Underground, Syphon Filter, Resi Evil 1, 2 and 3, SOCOM, Conflict Desert Strike, Global Strike, Dino Crisis, Metal Gear Solid..... The list continues.
It seems or felt like they focused on the story, missions and atmosphere, rather than these days focusing on big budget voice acting, graphics and sodding 4K or Ray Tracing.

The headset was really cool for the time, though idk if it would be worth the effort revisiting it today. It was a 1:1 replacement of the regular command menu, meaning you just had to read the command out loud rather than using a menu to click on it. It could save a couple seconds of time if you already knew the command. But for the PS2, that was groundbreaking technology and felt really cool to use. It was a bit difficult to get it to register commands sometimes; it seemed to work best if you used an incredibly thick Texas accent. So instead of "Fireteam, fire at will", you would say "Far teem, far at wheel".

Great series overview! Around 6 years ago, when i started collecting ps2 games, i wasn't impressed with Socom and thought it was overrated. Recently i ordered all ps2 versions (sold my collection a while back) - and i fell in love with them. Back when i wasn't so positive about them, it was due to me searching for more sandbox oriented tactical games. Now spoiled and to a degree bored with titles like GR Wildlands and Breakpoint (i adore them btw), i really started to appreciate desingn that puts me in a scenario that i have to deal with (still with some wiggle room), and not one that i can entirely suit to my playstyle. This makes these games kinda fresh to me.
For now i would say that on ps2 Socom 2 is the best (although really exhausting sometimes), and Combined Assault is close second (bit buggy and much easier - but has other qualities like awesome looking levels). When it comes to psp i like every single one - first one is just easier socom 3, second is more action oriented, and third feels very modern and has one of the best levels in the series. I don't count Tactical Strike because it's not shooter. Never played Confrontations for ps3, but played Socom 4 and this was easly the worst game in the series, by large margin. Less than mediocre tpp shooter, and horrible socom game.

I always recall there being around 60k - 90k concurrent players, which in 2003 was bonkers because how rare having broadband, network adaptor AND a connection close to the PS2 was.

The only thing I found annoying in socom was when I told my teammates to throw grenades often they would hit something right in front of them and kill everyone they would run into the enemies line of sight to use the grenade like a blunt force weapon or something and get them selves killed or just refuse

I still own a Ps2 and I play it sometimes, I don't give a shit about ps3, ps4, ps5 or an Xbox. I have the 4 socom games and my favorites are socom 1, 3 and combined assault. I have lots of excellent ps2 titles.

Socom II, best mp shooter of all time. Socom was based on a US Navy Seals training program. The web page socombattles eventually turned into game battles . if you go to socombattles webpage it directs you to gamebattles still. i think it was pG or bright eyes that started it IRC. Wars would last all night. End with scores of 1-2. No open mic you had to push a button to talk. People would hijack the lobby😂. Blizzard grenade hill. Crossroads Ruins DG Abandoned Lag Jungle. The cheater =AfterMath= clan in part 1. I got plat on Socom 4. Game looks amazing and is underrated. Go get your tag so we can g^. I still say that to this day,g^. We would put paper in our trigger buttons and wire r3/l3 to custom buttons from Radio Shack on the back. Of all the remakes this is the one I want most. Take my money. I want my M16A2.

Only reviewing the offline gameplay is like the tip of the iceberg with this game. This game is all about online play, it's novel voice chat capabilities and the tactical depth in squad based play, ranked clan systems, etc. This is THE game that everything else emulated.
I truly wish you could have experienced this game in it's prime. You can still download patches that will let you play the emulated game on dedicated servers, but I hear the player base is low.
    What a gem. Kahuna Matata.

Socom 2 was my favorite. I bought them all around the same time in 2008/2009 and the PS2 for $150. Played them all through. Combined assault was good because of the graphics but that's it. No blood. Ruined the team commands. Definitely was rushed. If only socom 2 looked like combined assault.

I played the absolute dogshit out of Socom 3 and combined assault. I managed to beat them multiple times and even 100% them on all difficulties. And the thing is difficulties didn't really feel harder. There were a few moments that drop kicked me, but I absolutely enjoyed those two games. I beat the first game once, but I couldn't beat the lieutenant difficulty for shit, and yeah I remember how bullshit the last three level were. I only beat the 2nd one twice I think. I miss these games. Never should've sold my ps2 and my game library.

It was a better time, you didn't have to worry about hacks which is just not normal anymore. Worst you had was a glitch being abused. Imagine being able to play the game and not even having to think if the opposing team is hacking or anything. Just equal fair games worry free.

    • @gi_nattak

I only enjoyed Socom 1 and 2 MP plus great campaign.
I didn't like nor cared for 3 and Combined Assault when they added vehicles into the game as they were trying to copy Battlefield but in 3rd person when the game is suppose to be only on foot combat same time you can create small maps in 3 and combined assault but still it didn't have the flair and excitement like 1 and 2 did, the only good thing about Socom 3 and Combined Assault is the campaign.
Then the PS3 era, Socom Confrontation was just an ok game, Socom 4 had an ok campaign but the MP on there just wasn't very good.
Also on a side note, when Cod and Battlefield was becoming mainstream in the mid-2000's and onwards it sadly spelled doom for the Socom franchise.

Why pause the game when you had the headset? Kept the game much more fluid in my opinion. This game and Socom 2 were amazing games. Really miss the old days. When if you dared come into a room with a noob tube, you were voted out immediately. Nowadays every kid copies some bullshit build from off of UA-cam and there's no way to get rid of annoying players. And by annoying , I don't mean skilled, if you kill me with skill or a nice shot I will tell you how nice it was. If you are quick scoping or manipulating the game then you already know you suck, which I why you had to resort to your tactics for dumbells handbook.

You know games but dont know jack about Military so you only have a slight perspective. The ablity to command troops on ground and later in combined assault single person commands your able to create bound and movement skill when movement to contact. That is what made it great. And also why I liked Rainbow six series going into vegas and Vegas 2. As a grunt who let people in deployments. Combined assault was great in a way of how to work a team and also you are way too spoiled. It has a lot more to give in weapons than a lot of other shooter games. This aint a RPG fool.

I can't be the only one who prefers SOCOM 3 and Combined Assault over 1 and 2. The first two are janky as fuck, and with no checkpoints they feel very, very dated. SOCOM 3 was the first one that felt "modern" to me. The weapon customization made choosing weapons and equipment feel very personal, like this is YOUR weapon. The missions were often dynamic with new challenges to face and things to do that sometimes you didn't expect to happen. Plus with Combined Assault you could finally play the way YOU wanted to. Stealth or combat was a choice YOU could make rather than the game forcing one or the other upon you. Plus the wide-open levels in Combined Assault were excellent.
And you have the expanded universe with the Fireteam Bravo games.
I know the S1 and S2 fanboys will crucify me but I just don't think they've aged as well.
