I've been searching for this for awhile now and it's great to finally get to hear this piece on an actual banjo. It sounds incredible! Wonderfully played! Thanks for sharing this!
It's the first gourd banjo I made, about 20 years ago, right after I had done the research on this piece's remarkable survey of early 19th-c. African-American banjo styles; it's a reproduction of a gourd banjo of the time. The article I published on this is available on my website (see description). I have since made a better instrument (more videos to come)...thanks for your interest!
Delightful! I'm having so much fun in Music 101. So much to hear and learn! What a great time to study music - it's all here to hear. Thank you so much.
Great performance. Someone posted "Souvenirs d 'Andalousie" on the Classic Banjo Ning so I was looking up Gottschalk and found this. It's a a wonderful piece.
Cool!!! I was first introduced to this song when I opened for John Fahey a long time ago...he included this song on one of his Takoma albums...beautiful!!! Cheers!!! Ragtime Ralph/Blind Brand X..
What a primitive playing! The image in the head of Gottschalk must have been like this performance. This is a great performance approaching the essence of the work.
I think they mean, "tuned." But to answer the question, the authenticity of the banjo is that some of the notes are supposed to be slightly out of tune, rendering the sound like that purposefully.
"The Banjo" on an actual banjo!
Next ... "The Lark Ascending" on an actual lark.
La bananier played on an actual banana tree,
Lmaoooo imagine playing the sacrilegious bumblebee on a bee
Bravo. Many pianists should listen to your version to get the real notion of how this piece should be performed. Rhythmic and dry... a banjo sound.

Wow. I learned more about this piece in 4 minutes than in listening to 20 piano (original) versions. Sounds GREAT on the banjo!
Very cool. I live not far from Gottschalk's grave.
Wow! Absolutely beautiful. I hear it. I'm back in 1830s New Orleans.
Standing in my untidy kitchenette, water at the boil, leaping for joy at every beat. Ye olde bajo. Gracias.
A very worthy addition to existing renditions of Gottschalk's works!

Agree with other comments: this sounds so different! And much more authentic than the polished piano performances.
Thank you for this awesome time machine!
FINALLY, after all these years, I've always wanted to hear what this would sound like on a Banjo :D
I was moved to tears, literally.
Excellent arrangement. Beautiful instrument.

This is wonderful. Thanks for playing and posting.
Bravo for this arrangement. From Banjo to Piano to Banjo. Rich Idea. It doesn't seem to be easier on original banjo than on piano.
so deply excellent! thank you mr. smith.
I have studied this piece in depth & find it wonderful to hear on such an authentic instrument:-)
Great performance.

Sublime.
Because, ya know, it's called "The Banjo." There should be more of these. Bravo :)

That moment when you don't know how to play the banjo but you like to play The Banjo
What a primitive playing!

You are so cool.
What sort of banjo is that?
Банджо не настраивается в принципе?
I want to answer your question, but Google's translation of "настраивается" makes no sense to me. "Configurable"?
