- The Tao Te Ching, along with the Zhuangzi, is a fundamental text for both philosophical and religious Taoism. It also strongly influenced other schools of Chinese philosophy and religion, including Legalism, Confucianism, and Buddhism, which was largely interpreted through the use of Taoist words and concepts when it was originally introduced to China. Many Chinese artists, including poets, painters, calligraphers, and gardeners, have used the Tao Te Ching as a source of inspiration. Its influence has spread widely outside East Asia and it is among the most translated works in world literature
道 tao/dao literally means "way", or one of its synonyms, but was extended to mean "the Way". (It is really pronounced 'Dao' in China, but I've kept with the western pronunciation as the Wade Giles pin yin is used in the copy I read from). This term, which was variously used by other Chinese philosophers, has special meaning within the context of Taoism, where it implies the essential, unnameable process of the universe.
德 tê means "virtue", "personal character", "inner strength" (virtuosity), or "integrity". The semantics of this Chinese word resemble English virtue, which developed from the Italian virtù, an archaic sense of "inner potency" or "divine power" (as in "healing virtue of a drug") to the modern meaning of "moral excellence" or "goodness". Compare the compound word 道德 (pinyin: dàodé; Wade-Giles: tao⁴-tê²), literally "ethics", "ethical principles", "morals" or "morality".
經 ching as it is used here means "canon", "great book", or "classic".

In chapter one:
「萬物」 is translated as "ten thousand things", in Chinese it means "everything" or "all things".
「玄」 is translated as "darkness", I think it is more appropriate to translate it as cyclically "deep" for being mysterious.
In Chapter three:
「虛其心 實其腹」is translated as "by emptying hearts and stuffing bellies", it can means "humbling heart and enriching thyself".
「弱其志，強其骨」is translated as "by weakening ambitions and strengthen bones", it can means "testing mind and strengthen one's character".
「芻狗」is translated as "straw dogs", it refers to ancient sacrificial gifts and a metaphor for impartial things.

@@oliviaalmonds2255 I honestly wish I could lol, but I'm afraid I only have my interpretation of it. The wise man practices diligently because he understand the means of completing the task without working. The Tao however is beyond words, because as soon as you try to talk about it you remove it from its realm and try to bring it into your own. The fool would laugh at the absurdity of saying when you let go you gain everything. However I am simply a fool who tries to do the impossible for my own amusement and that's walk in this world as an observer and partaker without taking myself serious.

The Figure 8 Analogy:
An analogy on life, death, the dream-state and the symbolism intertwined within the human experience.
We human beings are not traveling in the abstract motion of a straight line towards death (for instance, the numerical straight line of say 1-89). Instead, we are moving in the motion of a figure 8. The Figure 8 is a natural repeating pattern that is divided into two halves and is thus the perfect symbol to represent the human life cycle and our two primary states of existence that we are continuously moving in and out of -the Awake state and the Dream state.
When we awake from sleep we come full circle to when we fall back asleep (represented by the bottom half of the figure 8 )and when we go into the dream state we come full circle to when we awake from the dream state (represented by the top half of the figure 8 ). Upon death; the figure 8 of life untwines, but it’s not the body untwining from the mind that this analogy represents. It's two states of mind untwining to form a larger state of mind. (8-0)
Because the awake state is really a state -of mind, with our body's physical reality "consciously" intertwined; and the dream-state is also a state of mind, with our body's physical reality "subconsciously" intertwined. Therefore; upon death, these two states of mind untwine to form a “larger” state of mind. A state that has all the potentialities of the dream world (flying, telepathy, psychokinesis, etc) combined with all the actualities of the awake world(nature, form, bonds, etc). This I refer to as the transitional analogy.
While conceiving The Figure 8 Analogy, I realized life and death must be perceived -from one point of view- as seperate entities(the transitional analogy(8-0), but must also be perceived -from another point of view- as inseparable entities(the symbolic analogy👇), both of which are ultimately linked by the dream-state.
The symbolic analogy consists of the untwined figure 8 of life/the 'circle of death’, if you will, which -abstractly- overlapps the ‘circle of life’/the Earth, with the overlappment representing the dream-state, like the common area in a venn diagram, and implies that the dream state is just as much a part of life as is of death ~by which semi-explains precognitive dreams, prodromal dreams, "visitations" by deceased relatives, etc; for the dream-state has a foothold in the afterlife, and is based on the premise that “while our body sleeps, our dream state symbolically represents the state that awaits upon our body's ultimate rest.”
In other words, while we are lying down and sleeping/dreaming, this natural process symbolizes where we go when we're ultimately lying down/dead -to a place "like" our dream-state...A state "of mind” with our body's physical form+bonds eternally engrained and intertwined.

@@WorkerBeesUnite i also have a chinese friend who is phd in ancient Chinese literature so i am luckier than most. He has really helped me understand some characters like for example the mystery’s mystery or the door to all mystery (玄）he said it is all of those meaning and even the word beginning of all mystery is included from. It is really interesting.

What happened to the five rings?
Feels more consistent, ephemeral and less cynical than Seneca. Though they touch on similar concepts, one is far more abstract (Tao Te Ching) than the realism of Seneca.

20 Seconds in and I am pretty sure I'm not gonna be able to listen to the reader habitually use a hard "T" when saying Dao/Tao. The meme "you had one job" comes to mind regarding this reading

@@codywalker8674 I can't any that is worth reading. I am trying to translate it myself and this is a book on philosophy. It does not have any good words about religion. Linking it with Taoism is a complete mistake.
Very interested and curious as to what you have translated! After reading even the few intepitations I have from the 1800 and 1900...and looking Into a few teachings about how it has been misinterpitated and misunderstood, I am even more curious! I enjoy philosophy deeply and am always looking to learn from many diff directions!
@@JF-mr5dr The translation, interpretation and understanding of the Tao Te Ching. The original translation is completely wrong and this video is where it is derived from. Taoism might be from the Tao Te Ching but the Tao Te Ching is definitely not Taoism. The first Chapter describes something similar to the Big Bang. The book itself contains philosophical thoughts of how humans thinks and what is happening inside our minds. It states how humans can and would be misled by people of authority, trying to keep people ignorant so they can be in power.

Sin - consists evil, crime - is universal problem, is ubiquitous. Humanity contaminated by sin. Sin in us by default, not learnt, not taught. Sin manifests in many forms. Sin is the opium. The origin of sin is unanswered.
Sin is pre-existing in all. Nobody taught us to sin. Sin pre-dates The Bible. The Bible explains origins of sin. The Bible provides remedy for pre-existing sin, through Jesus Christ death and resurrection. The Bible is best selling book in the world for this reason. Sin is real, The Bible is relevant. Sin is born at every child birth. Sin is disease of heart, and Jesus Christ is the cure.
Satan is the enemy, came to steal, kill and destroy. Misleads us to blame good loving God. God is not the author of evil.
Media, Police, Defense, Judiciary, Penitentiary, Security, Contracts confirm sin exists.
The origins of life, natural laws, sin, morals, purpose, meaning, conscience, music, creativity, intelligence, beauty, color, nature, water, air, light and amalgamation, remain unevidenced - elsewhere.
We love truth when it enlightens us, but hate when it convicts us.
Instructing to "Heart wash" from sin is not "Brainwash".
God created universe, placed natural laws, made man in His image, gave talents, instructed man to multiply and explore - The Initiation of Science. Science is the legitimate child of natural laws.
We are made with good purpose and meaning. We are good. Then sin entered and we all fallen. Disease, despair, deformities, deficiencies, depression, stress, guilt, greed, hate, anger, rebellious spirit, spiritual death entered. Sin plays spoilsport.
Unloose the Soul from the tight knot of sin. Soul outlasts death.
Sinners cannot save themselves from sin. Jesus Christ, the Holy God, intervened, willingly died on The Cross and resurrected, for remmissions of our sins, to save us from sin and hell.
We are weak at the core, however we try to portray otherwise. We need Holy God's help, who is willing to help with open arms.
Unable to find any motive any reason for Jesus Christ to die willingly on Cross and resurrect - except His love to save us from pre-existing sin and hell.
Nobody died for our sins and resurrected - except Jesus Christ. Exclusivity.
Jesus Christ claimed:
"I am The Way, The Truth and The Life". "I am The Resurrection and The Life".
"I am The Good Shepherd".
Jesus Christ has the authority to forgive sins.
Religion says "Do". Jesus Christ says "Done".
Religion is man attempts to 'search gods'. Jesus Christ came from heaven in 'search of man'.
Salvation from sin and hell is not earned through works or deeds or pilgrimages or rituals or ceremonies or traditions or cultures or meditations or public displays or making personal sacrifices or making animal sacrifices.
Salvation from sin and hell is free, but not cheap. Because Jesus Christ laid His life on The Cross, and resurrected.
God loves the sinner, but hates the sin. Just like a mother loves child, but hates disease in child.
We are saved by God's grace, not by our works.
Karma is getting what we deserve. Grace is getting what we don't deserve. Only Grace can be pre-fixed with Amazing. Amazing Grace. Karma is not Amazing.
GRACE: Getting what we don't deserve - i.e. forgiveness of sin, eternity in heaven through Jesus Christ.
MERCY: Not getting what we deserve - i.e. punishment of sin, separation from God, eternity in hell.
God offers grace and mercy for free through Jesus Christ death and resurrection.
Jesus Christ suffered, ridiculed, spat-on, humiliated, crucified on The Cross, and therefore He understands our pain. He raised victorious, we will too. Those who endure till end are victorious.
Jesus Christ coming again to judge all. The doors will be closed. Jesus Christ reveals every mystery, answers every question. He is The Alpha and The Omega. He judges everyone.
One day every knee shall bow, every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord.
The First Christmas - Jesus Christ came to earth from heaven to save us from pre-existing sin.
The First Good Friday - Jesus Christ crucified to The Cross, died willingly for remission of our sins.
The First Resurrection Day, also linked to Easter - Jesus Christ resurrected from death.
Jesus Christ made entry to Holy Heaven free through Him. Repent of sin and be saved. Easy.
The First Coming of Jesus Christ - He is Lamb, slaughtered for remission of sins to save us from sin and hell. And resurrected.
The Second Coming of Jesus Christ - He will be Lion, The Judge. The Lion and The Lamb.
Jesus Christ forgave all who crucified Him, and now forgives all, even who reject, ridicule and mock Him. He loves all unconditionally.
Believe, trust, repent of pre-existing sin in Jesus Christ that He died for remission of our sins and resurrected, and coming back to judge, accept Him as Lord and Saviour, and be saved from sin and hell. Any time, any where. Even now. Simple.
Nothing to lose, everything to gain.
For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.
For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but in order that the world might be saved through him.
I found God loved me regardless of sins, weaknesses and rejections by others. As sinner I cannot save myself through deeds. He believed me and has faith in me. I am not in competition with others. God loves you all, individually.
(My journal. Journey to life - after testing all 'isms' and religions, after failing to find origins, purpose and meaning of life, after swallowing pride, egos, anger, hate.)
This all means absolutely nothing to a person who doesn't believe in god in the first place. You do realise that, right?

The West did not proclaim the end of slavery until the mid-nineteenth century, while the Chinese legislated to abolish slavery a thousand years ago.
While the West massacred and colonized around the globe, the Chinese interacted with the world through trade, invention, and philosophy.
When you call Taoist philosophy "slave morality nonsense", does this mean that you have the mentality of a colonial slave owner?

And you know China reversed it's antislavery policy 30 years after they made it, right. They were only anti slavery for a few years here and there. They have millions of slaves during most dynasties, and even today. Which is good.

@@magnumopus5661 Depends how strong the desire is, if you're going to spend your life wishing and wanting stuff all the time, it's not going to make you happy. You can have goals and that but be prepared for them to change as you go along.
