    Great vid. If you feed some of the boost air back onto the intake it will be controllable and not overheat the turbine wheel so much. Another way to do this and Original would be to start the thing with a small amount of wood and then pump a regulated amount of old engine oil in the burn chamber as fuel. You could regulate the output of the turbo with the fuel feed.
    Also, Please look at getting a tripod for the next vid so you can set it up and we can see the action better. Some of this was a bit hard to watch with the shaking.
    Look forward to the next one!

      If the fuel is a mostly fixed factor, burn rate limited by air then some concepts may be inverted. The gas environment in the hot burn chamber is inverted, and the it's the air going in that should be passed through burner jets. (Flame front forms on fresh air coming in.) Rather than have the air just go back through some single open spot in the side, it could be routed through a steel pipe bent in a spiral with holes drilled into it that face inwards towards the fuel. Throttle is done by controlling the amount of pressurized air going back into the burn chamber. (Burning oil just makes it a regular jet engine, in which case this whole concept can be omitted as you're regulating fuel instead.)

    I made one of these a few years ago and converted it to run on waste oil this year. Outside of using a 12V transfer pump for the oil system (which is also a nice safety feature as the combustion area gets stupid hot, your oil reservoir is remote mounted and can be run through a filter), I'd consider fabbing in a damper system to limit how much heat is going through your turbo rather than trying to limit the air intake. The waste oil method is even easier to regulate with a PWM controller on the pump. 👍

      @C-M-E Рік тому +4

      @@zachmoyer1849 Done that too. The right kind of reduction box that can handle this power output isn't terribly thrifty on the ol' pocketbook. However, if you're good with a 3D printer and don't mind casting a turbine wheel (a real one, not the turbo version) you can make what is called a free-power turbine and use simple gear ratios far easier and cheaper. Outside of that, there's no real 'off the shelf' version that doesn't cost more than the entirety of this type of project.

    I've got a forty by sixty metal building for my machine shop, I put a three hundred gallon propane tank on its end to make a stove for heat in the winter, fifteen years ago or so. I've changed it several times to improve its performance, but never thought of putting a turbo on it. I've got an old one laying around and this looks like an ideal fall to winter project. I suspect I could get my shop up to warm in a few minutes, with any similar success to what you guys showed. I think a waste gate and perhaps a manual control of inlet air, might well tame the beast and make it "more equitable", after all who doesn't need more equity in these days and times? Thanks guys, looks like a fine experiment!

    In my experience mucking around with these, i found using a 4" screw on cap (from an irrigation supplier) was the go to and weld a big nut on the cap, so you can hit it with a rattle gun to tighten the crap out of it. Any leaks from the tank will cause the whole thing to sputter and shut down, also, a ball valve on the pressure pipe between turbo and tank is a lot better to control turbo speed. I might upload the vid to youtube and post a link later

    It seems the waste gate (or similarly large diverter/relief valve on the pressurized air pipe) is a critical component for a steady run. The other ones out there added them too, so I'm surprised you omitted it when other examples also showed the run-away operation until making the feature correction. Even without a waste gate, a big valve rated for high temperatures could have been used to throttle it. (And big as in having a passage about the same diameter as the tube it diverts off of.) The way to throttle is by bleeding off pressurized air on the return (as there's no fuel control), pulling a vacuum by obstructing the intake probably isn't that good for the turbo.
    Now I'm curious who is going to use a bleed air system to power something with a build like this first? There's always a surplus of boost when these things meet all the conditions to run. Even a tiny line that turns a small turbine reduction geared to the oil pump for the turbo would be something. But I could see a little generator or something else random using it too. Whatever it is will still need to take the heat from compression, and that which just radiates off the rest of the contraption.
    Another optional feature is a high-temp quartz glass viewing window. Always interesting to see just how the burn goes. Seen some examples that once a closed container is burning hot gases, it's the air going in that has flame front coming off like a jet burner. (Rather than the other way around like you're used to with a butane torch.) So a diffuser could be designed with that in mind if desired. (Diffusing air going in and some grates or a simple labyrinth path to the turbo would help keep chunks of any solid fuel from going up into the turbo. Burn chamber seems to be more about pressure than air velocity, although both factors can be thought out and managed in some way.)
    I know these things are just made to screw around with, but a little bit more of engineering could be put into it too.

    Add a manual wastegate to the barrel,,opposite end. A simple 4" exhaust pipe section on top of the hot tank with a plate damper you can swing open or closed. This dumps the pressure in the barrel. Once we did this, no need for a board on the turbo inlet to slow it down. We made the first wastegate exhaust pipe a bit too short and had sparks in our face. You could make it a 6 foot tall exhaust stack crazy straw if you wanted. We settled on a 48" length of straight pipe with the damper abut mid length, cause it gets hot.

Next a double trap door system to refuel, again sustainable systems of this design aren’t usually sought. You’re on to several inventions in this!!!!!!, keep going! It cool regardless!!! Ty

    Nice. A waste gate bypasses the hot side of the turbo to regulate pressure spooling the turbo ( mechanically spring controlled along with electronically or mechanically regulated boost pressure to reach psi above the spring being used. ...( Some are electric solenoid valves and arnt mechanically controlled at all. ) A blow off valve dumps charge pipe ( cold side) boost pressure . Most are engine vacuum controlled. And would not likely work as well in this application.. but a waste gate on the cold side would work to help regulate boost.
    Or a throttle body or carburator you could manually adjust. In the charge pipe or on the intake side of the turbo. .

  • @Y2daT420
    @Y2daT420 Рік тому +1

    ( just a thought for a non electric oil pump. ) If you have 2 oil reservoirs . One for the return oil dow low and another sealed oil feed tank above the turbo. You can feed the above tank boost pressure to increase oil flow with psi. and start it with a simple gravity feed. . Or. Use send boost pressure to the intake of a small junk 4stroke weed eater engine and connect the pump your using too the crank shaft. ( It should work like if it was steam powered . Which would be more efficient with the cam + timing modified with a extra set of lobes . So it opens intake on intake ±power stroke and exhaust on exhaust and combustion stroke. ( Basically making it a steam engine)

    I've always wondered if these could run on waste oil? You could lune the turbo, and then push drain in to feed the thing? Once it's up and spinning, a simple valve to throttle the oil going in to the tank might actually make the thing more civilized and controllable? Build another tank to hold the oil...plumb it to the turbo...pressurize it with air to provide lubricating fuel pressure? Also...alot of liquid fuel rocket engines use fuel to cool the combustion chamber.

    I got to thanking. If they installed a pressure relief valve on the charge side of the turbo. It could work as a kind of throttle.

    You've made a wood fired jet engine.
    IMO way more fun if you run it on gasoline and put it on a go kart.
    You can make the combustion chamber much smaller, just remember to include a flame can and fuel injector.

    Needs a drive by wire throttle body and a potentiometer to control how much air is actually getting to the turbo.

    With a constant source of fuel like that you need a throttle. Also if you had a bottle of oxygen, it might help to inject oxygen on start up with the throttle shut to help the turbo spool up on its own power.

    Virtical tank, wtapped in copper tube and water cooled tank. Cool the turbo. Put the oil reseroir above the turbo and pump oil back up. Or, build a water jacket around the tank. Cool the pipes as well. Get massive endurance and effect.
    Off you go people!

    I was just wondering that what would happen if You put the oil return line from turbo to front of the air intake. So the mahcine could use it as a extra fuel. Maybe You need bigger oil tank. But if You need burn some waste oil away this might work bot maybe not. 😃
