You guys are insane, and I'm here for it. What I think kills the turbos is all the crap from the burning wood. If you added something like a cyclonic filter between the barrel and the turbine that should have them lasting longer.
@@ep91v I don't think it would be very humane to put a cat in there XD And a catalytic converter would probably get clogged from filling up with bits of charcoal, which is likely far worse than coolant or oil which clog cats already :P
You're not idiots. You would have a giant channel if you posted more consistently. The 3 and 4 month post gaps didn't do you any favors, this is like early Cleetus or Boostedbois content.
It makes me proud to be an Australian, good stuff guy’s. I’m thinking about fitting one to the tray of my old HJ45 down the back, & maybe add a bit of Deisel injection for the long trips & extra boost. Love it, such Precision & content, David Attenborough has never been so interesting. Cheers
It would be sick if you can use the exhaust of the Primary turbo to spin a secondary turbo and feed the boost from the secondary turbo into the engine. The fire barrel can probably be built into the trunk, would probably look alot like the 350z rear mount turbos but with nothing restricting the exhaust of the engine. 0 Boost Lag FTW
is there like, a mesh or something to keep the wood out of the turbo? seems like that'd go a long way to keeping them alive... well, that and more cooling... like if you're gonna go this far, might as well take it further...
Need to make a cyclonic separator so the chunks of wood stop getting sucked into the turbine, it won't completely stop them from getting eaten up since some ash will still get through but it will drastically extend the life of them.
Lol.... I'm assuming this isn't covered by any extended warranty program of any kind, car prob deserved it. I dont know how you kept the laughter out but how serious ya look crack me the hell up.
Wow, What energy potential! Imagine if you built an identical one and used the electronic BOV to spool up the 2nd turbo when the wood was refilled in the cold furnace🤔. Constant regulated heat like that could, idk, boil water and turn a steam turbine to generate electricity............
It would be SUPER interesting to see temp data. Data like, consistent temps high enough to make steam. Steam that could turn a turbine. Turbine that could turn a generator? idk, maybe a wood fired- turbocharged-steaminator
What was wrong with that jag? I know a lot of other people are also saying that the car looked kinda decent so I’m guessing something is very very wrong with it we can’t see
You need to control your exhaust gas temperature by adding a pressurized water jet at the intake of the turbo making sure it is set to turn on after circuit is warmed up, but before it gets hot! Other option is to burn methanol or any alcohol instead of coal!?
The pure exhaust gas is way too hot for the turbo. If you inject the wasted air from the wastegate into the pipe between the barrel and the turbine inlet, it will mix with the hot exhaust gas and the temperature of the turbo will be much lower while it still produces probably even more thrust than now.
@@MattBerrymotorsport to be clear, I'm talking of the exhaust gas inlet, not the fresh air intake, so you just bypass the barrel. If you inject the fresh air into the exhaust gas inlet, the pressure will probably drop a lot slower but this way it is probably easier to set it to a relatively constant operating pressure. But an additional safety valve to quickly release the pressure is still a good idea, ideally something spring operated which can be set to a specific pressure. My concern is that maybe your electronic wastegate is too small for injecting the air into the exhaust gas inlet, you probably need to bypass about 50% of the air. Real Jet engines use up to 75% bypass air and just 25% for burning the fuel! The perfect solution would be some kind of 3way butterfly valve, basically a Y fitting with a butterfly valve inside, so you can adjust it all the way from 0% bypass (all the air to the barrel for startup) to 100% bypass (barrel completely closed off and all the air directly into the exhaust gas inlet of the turbo for shutdown of the barrel and cooldown for the turbo via leaf blower to protect the bearing of the turbo from overheating) And while running you can perfectly regulate the thrust with the intermediate settings. The Y valve doesn't need to be airtight inside, you can build it yourself, just weld 3 pieces of square tubing to a Y, drill a hole through the center, insert a shaft in the hole and weld a piece of sheet metal to the shaft. The only part which may be a little difficult is to find the right spot for the hole.
Remember, the normal game of controlling a jet engine is gone here. Normal jet turbines are governed by fueling. You cannot do that, as there will always be an abundance of fuel as long as there is wood in the barrel. You have to control it via inlet air. It didn't look terribly stable on the roof of the car, and it wasn't clear how much thrust it was providing either. It'd be much more interesting to see it pushing a go-cart. If you want to throttle it, you'll have to have a throttle body on the inlet of the turbo. Not sure if you'll be able to control that with your ECU. You'll also likely be better to remove the throttle body from the boost pipe, that's not doing much. The blowoff valve is fine, but, you should route the dump into your exhaust, to increase mass flow a little with air that'd otherwise be wasted. Remember, temperature is irrelevant as far as thrust is concerned, moving air is all that matters. Move more air -> make more thrust. Heat is just a byproduct in that equation. In terms of your turbo murder, that's going to be inevitable. You're pushing fine particulate at your bearings, and likely not running enough oil pressure to prevent ingress/fouling. You may be able to extend the life if you disassemble everything after a run and clean it, but it's going to fail prematurely.
You guys are so lucky you didn't find the air bag gas cylinder in the A post... that would have really livened up your day! BTW, what did this XF do to deserve this death?
