A Flip of a Coin - One Missed Opportunity

  • A Flip of a Coin was one of the most disappointing DLC stories in Arkham Knight. Especially because of how much care they almost put into the side-story of Robin's inferiority. They could have done so much more, and then they just didn't. Join me as I break it down in a spinoff of One Amazing Scene where I look at their One Missed Opportunity.

And that's why was my least favorite the red-haired one is fun but it's short it's not a bad story it's probably the if if I had the rain come on it's probably my favorite just because I love playing at Red Hood but other than that oh by the way it has my favorite DLC boss fight in Black Mask.

Just a personal opinion: If they made all of the Arkham Stories like A Matter of Family (about 45 or so minutes long) then maybe they could've made them just as good as that mission. It seemed like they only did it for Batgirl because Barbara plays a bigger part in Arkham Knight and wrote off the rest of the Bat Family as the laughing stock. Again, just my opinion.

Bad opinion. They made a longer one for batgirl because the other Arkham games had that one “long DLC story mission”, like cold cold heart and Harley Quinn’s revenge. That was the point of matter of family. The other story missions were just other 5 dollar short story missions to add more content to the game with different characters. Why would they attempt to write the bat family off as a “laughing stock”???

I would've preferred that as the story, him betraying the kind of person he wants to be to become who everyone else (well, aside from Barbara) expects him to be, because that's the only way they treat him seriously. Then he gets that low point where he learns that he can't be Batman, and Barbara reminds him he shouldn't be Batman. He needs to be his own kind of hero.
It's been done before, but it's a character arc that works, and makes sense given the situation

This almost feels like how it is with Tim as Robin in general. Compared to the rest of the Batfamily, Tim doesn’t really stand out that much. Just comparing him to his fellow Robins, Dick was the first Robin, who eventually grew out of that role and became Nightwing. Jason is the Robin that died and came back to life and became the Red Hood. And even though he isn’t in the Arkham series, Damien, the Robin after him, stands out more because he’s a lot more violent and is Batman’s actual son. I can’t help but feel bad for Tim because unlike the other Robin’s, he *chose* to be Robin. And he’s proven himself time and again that he is a great hero, but no one really recognizes because like I said, he doesn’t really stand out unless you really think about it.
    Tim deserves better.

Tim kinda gets screwed over because he basically can just be a way to let you have a Robin that can be Robin forever, he doesn't have an end date like nightwing and Mr crowbar, and unlike Damian, he's really not put into a postion where he's supposed to push forward as a character he's sort of in a limbo where he is basically just a Robin that has the purpose of filling the role of Robin when the other Robin's aren't around to be Robin

I’ve always thought that the expansions for Red Hood, Nightwing, and Red Robin (I’ll explain), should’ve been almost mini games themselves that let you explore the world at different times and states. They could see how the world develops with their decisions and how they can help fill the void left in the Batmans until a permanent fix can be made.
This could’ve been concluded with a second Season of Infamy esque DLC that features Azrael, Bane, an actual version of Hush, Damien, and more. To fully end the Arkham world with a strong conclusion, disregarding whatever other DC games come out.

Tim is always getting shafted, I hate it.
Dick is the original, so of course everyone recognizes him. Especially for something like Teen Titans.
Jason gets the spotlight as worst(?) Robin and for a couple years people couldn't stop talking about him as Red Hood, even getting a movie focusing on him, AND being the titular Arkham Knight.
Damian being one of the best Robins' and the blood-son of Bruce definitely helps, and he has a sword, which obviously makes him cooler.
I think the most relevance Tim's gotten in years was the confirmation of him being Bi.

Its really stupid the resplution (and their isnt even really one) is that Robin acts more like batman with how he says to get two face back to gcpd. They literally made Tim be living in batmans shadow by hinting hes just going to change how he normally acts and stop with the humour to be just like batman. I swear they should of made this be a red robin origin story, the final scene could of been him in the batcave staring at the red robin suit to show hes going to form his own legacy hes going to show the thugs, his wife, the world but more importantly himself he is just as good as batman without the resolution being becomg batman 2.0

There is an explanation in one of the tie-in comics, but the canonicity of those is questionable. Apparently Tim looked at some old sewer blueprints and found that the lake in the batcave connects to the flooded part of Arkham City, and so uses that to sneak in & out undetected.

Robin deserved more in the Arkham Series
In City, he has less than 10 minutes unless you have Harley Queen's Revange, in Knight its almost worse, unless you are looking out for him, going back to the studio every few scenes of the main story to catch him up to the plot, and even then he has no relevance to it, Robin could be removed from knight and the only change would be regarding the clown disease and, even then you could rework the story so alfred makes it instead, he didnt even need to be captured to make batman reveal who he is, just Gordon alone would suffice.

It honestly should've just been 2 long story DLCs. The Batgirl one should've been longer and fleshed out the relationship between her and Tim Drake since that's one of the most baffling and disliked parts of the Arkham-verse's story. The second should've been a story with Tim Drake and Jason Todd (with Barbara Gordon trying to keep the peace) working together to calm down the chaos that would definitely have taken root in Gotham following Batman's "death", making the both of them playable and having them try to find a middle ground so they can try and protect Gotham moving forwards. Maybe even turn them against each other at the halfway point due to Jason's willingness to kill, leading to a boss fight and leaving it clear that they'll be at odds moving forward. Like, imagine you start the DLC as Jason Todd, tracking down Two-Face, and he ends up reluctantly working with Tim after running into him doing the same thing. The two of you confront Black Mask and his men because they have info on Two-Face, and this scene ends Black Mask revealing were Two-Face will be in a few days (like they're meeting to discuss a weapons deal or something) and then Jason throws Black Mask to his death, only for Tim to save him and knock him out before returning to confront Jason. The player, who's been in control of Jason this whole time, now has to beat Tim in a boss fight, which you do, but Jason doesn't kill Tim, maybe saying something about how it would leave a bad taste in his mouth for him to kill a Robin. Then after a cutscene where Tim is recovering from his loss agains Jason, he opens up to Barabara about how rough things have been since Bruce died, and about how much he feels like a failure, especially after losing to Jason. Barbara says something to him (ideally something that's a callback to the expanded version of her Batgirl DLC so it ties the two together) that gets him motivated to get up and try again, and you take control of Tim for the rest of the DLC, going to the place Tim and Jason were told Two-Face would be, which culminates in a boss battle where you play as Tim fighting Jason, and Tim comes out on top and arrests Two-Face, ultimately proving that he is capable of portecting Gotham even without Batman.

Scarecrow had Militia guards with him that were no doubt armed, and Robin was cornered in a tiny cell, there was nowhere for him to run or hide. Especially since he doesn’t have smoke bombs.

How I would rewrite this DLC
Firstly, Robin has a new suit. It is the Red Robin suit, which resembles Batman's suit and ties into the theme of Robin feeling like he has to be like Batman. The opening is still the same, with Robin arriving in the waste disposal building, going through a predator section, and having a back and forth with Barbara. In addition to having the RHD, Robin now has the sonic batarang, remote control shuriken, smoke pellet, and can do inverted takedowns. The difference is that Two Face is actually at the building, and in the foreman's room. Robin kicks the door open, and finds Two Face holding a gun to a person's head. Two Face tells Robin that he is going to let him walk out of the building or else he will kill the hostage. Robin has to follow Two Face back to the entrance of the building while Two Face holds the gun to the hostage's head and mocks Robin for being unable to do anything about it. Two Face arrives at the entrance where a garbage truck and several of his men are waiting for him. Two Face gets in one final jab at Robin by saying Batman wouldn't have even let him get out of the office and saved the hostage. He then points his gun at Robin, who throws up his shield, and throws the hostage at Robin while firing of two shots that don't hit the shield. They hit the hostage. Robin tries to save the bleeding out hostage while Two Face escapes. The hostage bleeds out in Robin's arms with his final words being "W-w-why didn't you s-*coughs blood* save me?". The screen fades to black.
Check the replies for the continuation. I can't post the whole thing because the comment is too long.

The screen returns to Robin standing on the same tower that Batman was standing on at the start of the game. It is the middle of the day, and it is cloudy and raining (so basically just like in the GCPD Lockdown DLC). Barbara asks Tim if he is alright, and Tim says "I will be when Dent is back in lockup" in the same tone as Bruce. Robin then throws a remote control shuriken to check for radio signals that he can use to find where Two Face is located. He finds 5 crime scene reports, a police radio stating that Deadshot has taken hostages at the Ratanfairy terminal (The map from the "Endless Knight" AR challenge), and that Nightwing is currently trying to stop a bank robbery being committed by Two Face's gang. The players can choose to investigate one of the crime scenes, stop Deadshot, or help Nightwing with the bank robbery. Stopping the robbery progresses the story, but the player can do the side missions after beating Two Face.

    • @andrewdeluca7352
      @andrewdeluca7352 6 місяців тому

Robin arrives at the bank, and sneaks in through one of the exterior vents. He exits at the other side of the vent and lands on a vantage point that Nightwing is currently on. Robin asks "What are you doing in Gotham, Dick?" Nightwing responds "I've been tailing Harvey's gang ever since I found out they hit up Bludhaven's banks while I was helping Bruce with Penguin's gun running operation." Robin, still using Bruce's tone of voice, says "I thought Bruce told you to protect Bludhaven. Gotham is my city now." This just makes Nightwing chuckle and crack a joke about Tim channeling his inner "brooding vigilante". The player gets to replay the final bank heist from Two Face's side mission but it is now a duo predator section with Robin and Nightwing. Once there is only one thug left, he gives up and lets the duo interrogate him. Robin tries first and gives the typical Batman threat of "Talk or you'll never be able to eat again without a straw." to which the thug just laughs and calls Robin "a kid trying to wear daddy's shoes". Robin goes to strike the thug, but Nightwing stops him. "Let me handle this kid." Nightwing says as he grabs the thug away from Robin and pins him to wall with one of his escrimia sticks. "Now buddy; your going to tell my friend and I where you're boss is or you are going to learn what 15,000 volts to the stomach, crotch, and finally forehead feels like." Nightwing says in a chipper voice. The thug quickly breaks and says that two face is in the Hellsgate Law Firm office. Nightwing thanks the thug for the info, and promptly knocks him out with an escrimia stick to the skull. Robin makes his way to the exist, but Nightwing tells him to stop. Nightwing stutters before saying "Look kid, I know what its like. The feeling of living in his shadow and feeling the need to live up to his legacy, but you don't need to be Bruce 2.0. You were already a great hero and an even better detective. Stop trying to be like him. Please Tim." Tim pauses for a second, and then says "Go back to Bludhaven. Gotham is my city now." Tim says while still using Bruce tone of voice. The camera fades to black as Tim walks towards it.

    • @andrewdeluca7352
      @andrewdeluca7352 6 місяців тому

Tim arrives at the Hellsgate Law firm office, and Two Face's dialogue is mostly the same except for him making a comment about the hostage Robin failed to save. This clearly hits a nerve, but Barbara just tell Tim to ignore him. The puzzle with the sentry guns and thugs is the same, but Tim and Barbara's argument is more intense.
      Oracle:"How's it going?"
      Tim:"Slow."
Oracle:"Tim. Stop that. You're not him."
Tim: "So everyone keeps telling me."
Oracle: "Good. I love you for who you are, and so did he."
Tim: "Yeah well that isn't making criminals fear me! How am I supposed to protect this city when everyone sees me as a joke?"
Oracle: "You want them to fear you? Stop trying to ride off of the fear they felt for him, and make them fear you by bringing down Harvey!"
Tim: "THAT ISN'T ENOUGH! BRUCE WOULD HAVE HAD HARVEY BACK IN LOCKUP BEFORE HE EVEN HAD A CHANCE TO GET OUT OF THE GCPD! BRUCE WOULDN'T NEED DICK TO INTERROGATE THUGS FOR HIM, AND BRUCE WOULDN'T HAVE LET AN INNOCENT PERSON DIE!!!"
      Thug: "You guys hear something?"
      Tim: "We'll finish this later."
Once the player reaches the hacking puzzle, Tim and Barbara have a new conversation.
Tim: "I'm sorry for snapping at you."
      Barbara: "It's alright Tim."
Tim: "No it isn't. I shouldn't have let my anger out on you. You were just trying to tell me what I've been to blinded to see. I can't be him, but that doesn't matter. I can be something different, something better."
Barbara: "I'm glad that finally clicked Tim. Now let's go put Harvey back in lockup so we can finally get to that beach."

The final encounter with Two Face goes slightly differently. During the fight with the thugs, Two Face is firing rockets from the grenade launcher he had in his arkham city fight. Once the player defeats the last thug, a cutscene plays.
Two face: "So, the boy becomes a man. Too bad it's short lived."
Two face fires a rocket at Robin, who dives out of the way to avoid. This leaves him open to Two Face firing two shots from his pistol. Robin is now kneeling on the ground. Two face fires another rocket, and Robin is just able to bring up his shield. The blast sends Robin flying back, and shatters his cowl. Now he just has his Robin mask covering his face. Two face walks up to Robin with his pistol drawn.
Two face: "It wasn't brave coming here. It was stupid. You're not the bat. He wouldn't have let me get away, wouldn't have let me get him like this, and wouldn't have let me pump that guy full of led. Say high to the both of them for me when you see 'em next."
Barbara: "Tim get ready. I'm about to cut the lights."
Tim right as Harvey is about to toss his coin: "You'r right Harvey, I'm not him."
The lights go out, and a button prompt appears for the player to preform a takedown.
The lights come back on and Robin says "I am the night." before knocking out Harvey with a knouckout smash from behind. Robin picks up the coin, and Barbara questions if they will ever get to that beach. Tim apologizes, and says he still has some work to do as the screen fades to black.

      FREE ROAM CONTENT
The screen cuts back to gotham, and Tim is once again sitting on top of the tower Bruce once stood on at the start of the game. Barbara asks Tim if he is ready come home, and Tim says he still has some loose ends to tigh up.
DEADSHOT MISSION- Deadshot has had a mental breakdown since he found out Batman had died, and therefore would go down as the one person he was never able to shoot. Deadshot has taken several hostages at the terminal. He says that he will kill them if he sees anyone who isn't Batman trying to stop him. This boss fight is nearly identical to the one from Arkham Origins, but if anyone (Deadshot or the thugs) sees Robin than Deadshot will kill the hostages. Due to Deadshot constantly aiming his sites at the thugs, they will startled and turn around. This forces the player to constantly be on their toes as they have to ready to avoid a startled thug turning around and seeing them. Once the player defeats Deadshot, they restrain him and can talk to him and the hostages (one of them being Jack Ryder). The hostages thank Robin and tell him he is already filling in Batman's boots. Talking to Deadshot reveals how far he has spiraled as he rambles on about needing to kill Batman and refusing to believe Robin when he says that Batman is dead.
Crime scene investigations- They are just like the ones from Arkham Origins, but with one change. The red evidence markers are removed. The player has to survey the scene and look for items/things that stand out. These mainly go to show something that the Arkham games never really showed. Tim Drake is a great detective. Seriously, he is literally called "The world's second greatest detective" and the Arkham games never even show him at a crime scene. Plus, getting to reconstruct crime scenes were one of the best parts of Arkham Origins and they were criminally under used in Arkham Knight.
Finally, completeing both of these missions before going to the bank will result in the player get a new line of dialogue after defeating Two Face. Instead of saying he still has work to do, Tim tells Barbara to start packing her bags. When arriving back in Gotham, Tim says he will be home once he does a round of patrol. Tim will finally be back to his normal tone of voice when he says these lines.

The way the Arkham series treats every other member of the Batfamily aside from Bruce himself is just so disappointing. I think the worst is Tim, and it's largely because the "Tim" of the Arkham games just isn't Tim, at all. It just feels all wrong, looks all wrong. That's not Tim. I suppose City's version of him wasn't too bad, but Knight just destroyed any chance of a good adaptation. WHY IS HE BALD. This happens so often with Tim specifically, he gets shafted and adapted poorly. Just as another example, Young Justice Animated is a great show... divorced from being an adaptation of Young Justice, a great comic run, of which Tim is a main character, a founder of the team. And then in the show they replace him with Dick's Robin as the "Bat" member until season 2. And then they hardly use him. Stop giving Tim the shaft!
(And the others too, I just wanted to rant about Tim specifically here)

I feel like Robin's character in general was a missed opportunity in Arkham Knight. He feels inferior to Batman and that's honestly a great motivation for him to prove himself further. He already proved that with his backstoy; tracking Batman down with his own self taught detective skills but I wanted more. So, I thought the story was going to take a dark turn in the main campaign and maybe considering many people didnt like how it turned out, hear me out on my perspective...
That scene when Batman and Robin witness the death of Henry by his own hand, Robin realizes Batman is the last Joker. Batman walks into the cell at Robin's request and we get another flashback revealing Jason's torture. And as it turned out, Batman never walked in, he had a vision and wanted to keep Robin safe by locking him in the cell. However...
I feel the story could've benefited and surpassed everyone's expectations if Batman really was in the cell and Robin runs out to fight the militia surrounding their base. We spend a great amount of time playing and relating to Robin as he proves himself further to Batman that he could handle his own like he was trained. Eventually, he'd "learn the truth about Barbra" and his emotions get in the way during HIS fight with the Arkham Knight, leading to Robin's capture being taken to Arkham Asylum and finds out Batman was taken there too after a psychological breakdown in his cell (from worrying about Robin and turning into Joker). And instead of there being just Scarecrow and Arkham Knight, there's an army there too. Batman and Robin are told the truth about Barbra, Jason reveals himself to be the Arkham Knight, and Scarecrow reveals Bruce Wayne under the cowl to the world. The Joker taking over sequence plays out as it does and Bruce rejects and overcomes his fear. And either Gordon or Nightwing breaks Batman and Robin from their restraints. Big fight in the Asylum breaks out, defeating Scarecrow with his own fear toxin and Batman reaching out to Jason for a second chance (mirroring the Joker scene from 'Under the Red Hood') Jason dissappears after Batman tells Alfred. And then finally Batman and Robin take Scarecrow in to the GCPD.
Kinda clunky but I'm going off the top of my head and missing a few story beats that could be added in anywhere. But I would've loved if we got to play Robin after the cell scene. If it was real. What does everyone think about my vision for an alternative piece for the campaign story?
