- This charming melody in antique style resembles a gavotte, evoking delightful images of the French roocco period. And well it might, since it played from the music box given to Josette duPrés of Martinique by Barnabas Collins in the 18th century. The original piece was written by British composer Robert Farnon, and a later version composed by Robert Cobert. This is my own arrangement and a small tribute to Dark Shadows, unquestionably one of the most innovative and intriguing programs in the history of American television.
Thanks for your nice comment. I love this tune and think Robert Farnon's original is the best and always wished that the program had kept it, which is why I did. I am sad to have learned of Jonathan Frid's passing last week. I loved and admired him for many years and he will never be matched or surpassed. Thanks again for writing.

I absolutely do not mean this as a criticism of this version because it is perfect. But there was another version of the music box that I liked better. They were both very nice.

I always thought the Josette theme from Dark Shadows as heard in the music box was like some lost melody of the 1700s (18th century) which is the time of the 1795 storyline when Barnabas meets Josette for the first time and is turned into vampire by Angelique. The melody seems inspired by composers of that era has a Mozart like flair innocent, simple, sweet, like a Sonata for the piano. I love the embellishment on this one. Thank You.

Me too. I could not stand Julia, either. I never liked their relationship. I liked vampire Barnabus with Willy.

Today, August 7th 2020, I finished the 26 seasons of DS. I watched them first in late 60's with my family back in my country. I'm now watching the 13 episodes of the 1991 version. Most of the original cast has passed already and yet they keep enchanting generations. They live forever. It was a wonderful time on television. What a great excercice as an actor, to performed so many different characters in the same project. Thank you for this beautiful tribute. Greetings from Los Angeles!

You are very welcome. I loved this piece and thought it would make a nice piano transcription. There is a published version in the Dark Shadows Music Book but my arrangement is of the original them with added length and harmonies.

Thank you for this. The original music box tune was always my favorite. Not sure why they changed it. The second is nice, but I still say the first would be more authentic to the era in which it would have been produced and was a bit more melancholy which describes Barnabas and Josette's doomed relationship.

Both versions are very good but remembering the show when Maggie was kidnapped and held prisoner by Barnabas. in 1968.this version always calmed her and almost hypnotized her into believing she was really Josette. This version..my personal favorite!
I don't think it calmed her, she said ''I'll smash it'' lol but when Sarah appeared; that calmed her.

I had always wondered why they got rid of this version of "Josette's Theme" on the show! The latter version was simply beautiful, but this one was intriguing and lovely as well! Was it two parts of one piece, or what? I'm so glad you put this on here; I had no idea it was an actual historic musical piece; again, it is simply beautiful the way you play it on here!
