    This really should be its own series. It'd be nice if Dekoni supported a follow up with pads for Fostex, Audio Technica, etc.

      @@Assimilator702 Thanks for the reply. I can never seem to find much info on other pads. I've spent more on pads than I did on the X00, even going as far as buying a couple of different ZMF, and it seems like a lot of people I've just accepted that stock is stock for a reason. The only pads I've found that has a different, but nearly as pleasant sound, are the DT770 Beyer pads stretched on to fit (with attenuation rings). They sound great. They're open and airy, with only a slight decrease in bass, BUT I have the Sundara for that kind of sound and it does that sound better. So, I rarely even put those on, but it is an option for those who want an all-in-one headphone. Seems it's hard to do better than stock for this headphone. Thankfully the clamp is perfect for my head and these have become my favorite headphones.

      @@NotTheOnlyMattAround I wanted a pair of Fostex for so long and when I finally got a pair I was severely let down when comparing to my reference headphones and even iems. The Fostex have such a slow presentation. While the bass was impressive I can get a better presentation from iems which I prefer these days anyway. The midrange sounded buried and the treble was tizzy. To to mention the build quality of those cans is terrible. The clamp was so loose on my head if I looked down they fell off my head. The headband is built with such little care for its actual purpose it makes me think Fostex rushed the design of the platform just get something on the market. And the reports of the yokes snapping like dry twigs and exposing the pit metal underneath was the using in the cake for me. It’s kind of like admiring a certain female for a long time and thinking she’ll be THE ONE. You finally go on a date with her and all her mannerisms and habits are such a turn off that any desire you had flies out the window. Or in one word.......anticlimactic. I sold my Fostex for slightly more than I paid and I don’t miss them one bit except for the nice wood cups.

      @@Assimilator702 Man, your experience with the X00 sounds a lot like my experience with the DT 1990 Pro. I researched forever and was convinced this was the perfect headphone for me. Got it, made my jaws hurt horribly after only about ten minutes of wearing. Bought two different Dekoni pads to try, and despite measurements, the velour pads do not sound like stock to my ears. They sound less detailed and more distant, but I just assumed my ears would get used to it. Surely I wouldn't be disappointed by something so expensive. Then, once they were comfortable enough to wear for more than ten minutes, I found the sound itself began to hurt my ears after about thirty minutes. So I ordered an in-line filter from Solderdude to tame the peak. Once that came in, I came to realize that the praise for detail these receive must be because of the treble peak, because when the treble peak was tamed they sounded worse than the HE-4XX I had hoped they would replace, to my ears.
      I actually got the TH-X00 almost expecting to be disappointed, and took the risk knowing I'd be able to resell them for more than I paid at the good deal I got. Immediately sold the DT 1990 after only a day of listening to them, and installed Lawton driver mod a few weeks later. Slight improvement. Purchased ebony cups from Emu hoping for another slight improvement but I couldn't tell much difference beyond an almost indiscernible amount of subbass. But damn they're gorgeous now. Cut and re-terminated the mile long cable to 3.5mm, and I'm convinced I'll be keeping them for the rest of my life.
      It just goes to show how much different we are based on things like the shape of our heads, our preferences, and sensitivities.
      Have you found anything since then that you've liked, or are you still searching?

    my own recommandation for dt1990: elite velour. stays true to the original sound (balanced pads) while smoothing that annoying beyer treble peak: much needed and appreciated! also, they are more confortable than sticky leather for long sessions when it's hot summer and your head's all sweaty. tried the elite hybrid on them, didn't like it because they change the sound signature too much.

      @LyK0sa 3 роки тому

      I've had the elite velour on my 1990s for months now, but today I changed them out for ZMF universe perforated hybrid pads. I'm really enjoying enjoying them so far, the suede faces feel great, soundstage is possibly a little better than the elite velour, and the treble peak is dialed back a little more (they're still bright, just not as piercing, I'd say we're back to AKG K712 levels of treble)
      The only minor downside is that since they're not specifically designed for beyers, you can't get that perfect OEM style fitment that you can get with the dekoni pads.

    The DT1990 "stock" pad isnt stock at all. Probably the same as the other fenestrated sheepskin ones you have. But I think these are all made by hand and thus the foam isnt ever the exact same shape.

    • @ron2291
      @ron2291 4 роки тому

      Yeah, the stock pads are way less comfortable than the 1990s. I use their hybrid because it's way more comfortable but from what I was able to find the "better" pads are the one he said almost gave 3 stars to and that has to do with enhancements on it's "normal" sound signature ( slightly wider, a verry small amount more u shaped ) with way more comfort.

    • @Foxy_proxy
      @Foxy_proxy 4 роки тому +1

      @@ron2291 I've got the fenestrated sheepskins and ive made them even thicker by putting a foam ring behind the padding. They sound awesome but even then comfort is more important as I have mine hooked up to my pc through a dac + amp. I can adjust the sound using peace+apo EQ to make it far better than it originally is. Its the whole point behind buying neutral headphones if you'd ask me.

    I heeded your advice and bought myself a pair of Dekoni choice leather pads for my 770 80ohms. I was originally not very satisfied with how some frequencies sounded on those headphones, but after switching to the new pads it completely transformed them. The first thing I noticed which Zeos didn't mention is that the bass gets improved enormously. I'm typically very picky when it comes to the lower frequencies but here it sounded pretty much perfect. I however felt that the lower treble frequencies (around 6000 if I remember correctly) sounded a bit too quiet, but after adjusting it with software the sound became an absolute 10/10. Much better soundstage, richer in detail, and they're way more comfortable than the stock pads. They are also perfect if you plan to use them near other people since they leak very little sound

    Just wanted to say thank you for the video. My DT770's pads have deformed after just one year of usage (albeit heavy usage, to be frank), and when I searched for alternatives, Dekoni pads were often recommended by many people, but not by everyone. Which is when I found your video. The way you plainly described the differences between them helped me decide to order the Choice Leather pads, which despite potentially being more sweat-inducing (but perhaps easier to clean?) seemed like the right choice towards also changing the way my headphones sound closer to my taste. Can't wait to try them on, will report back :)

    Got some suedes for my 880s and took them off after about a week.
    Pros(vs. stock):
    -My ears don't barely touch the inside of the cups.
    -Noticeably reduced the few spots of sibilance that pop up in my playlists.
    -Low end dominant tracks very enjoyable.
    -Less fatiguing overall.
    CON:
    -All of the above comes at the expense of a significant veil that borderline ruined most songs on my playlists. Mortal Kombat theme is great, but tracks with strings/vocals/piano that normally sound insanely intimate on the 880s sound like they're in another room with the suedes. Teej said they "completely destroy everything this headphone was good at," and I definitely understand where he's coming from.
    That said, I do listen to a good bit of bass-heavy music, so I'll probably swap them back on from time to time now that I own them.

    The best ever combination I found for myself is the elite Velour on the DT 1990, it's basically a must buy for me if you want to get the DT 1990.
    It's by far my most often used headphone because it's just amazing all around and the measurements back that up too. Especially the measured full spectrum lack of unwanted resonances is amazing with these and they basically sound the most naturalistic yet fun and HiRes headphone out there.
    That combination is a monster for me.

    • @soraflame66

      @@soraflame66
      Yeah, they sound overall far more neutral, less aggressive while still retaining their resolution of detail (I would even argue that those pads vastly improve it in the bass region) and the mids might only get 'a little' better, but I found that to be the most noticeable change aside from the less piercing highs, since it is the one thing that makes the whole tonal character seem a lot more natural and pleasing.
      I do see why Zeos said "stock" though. Different from many drastic, sound destroying modification you can often do by changing pads on your headphones it retains much of the DT 1990s strengths and a good chunk of character but I would still argue that the flaws are all but eliminated which make the headphone into a completely different beast for me.
      In fact I didn't have much love for the DT1990s with the analytical pads at first, since they had a certain magic to them but I just found the highs too piercing and the lows too weak to be impressed by anything but it's resolution, and sparkle in certain songs while the balanced pads seemed indeed better rounded but had too much unwanted resonances in the bass section and the upper part lost its positive sparkle while still retaining too much sharpness.
      Putting the Elite Velours on was like dialing the headphones into near perfection for the first time.
      That's why, since I've gotten the DT 1990, I've never again settled for any other pad on them.
      Not because I didn't try (I did use the suede and fenestrated ones for example but didn't like them as much as Zeos apparently) but because it just sounds like the best rounded headphone I have with them on.

    TL,DR: The Choice Suedes on the 1990s enhance the sound by 300%, clear recommendation.
    I have the 1990s and just got the Choice Suede pads delivered today. What can I even say? They are simply amazing. I'm not a basehead, since most Bass-heavy headphones I've tried covered the mids and sounded bad, but even if these pad are quite bassy - don't let that discourage you. The bass actually sounds good (never thought I'd say that) and almost never covers up the mids or highs due to the increased soundstage and good separation. For the few songs where it does cover it the tiniest bit? Well, it never made it hard to hear, just slightly harder at worst. I mostly listen to Rammstein, Marilyn Manson, Slipknot, the Minecraft soundtrack, Hans Zimmer, the AC4 soundtrack, etc. Especially Slipknot comes out as a clear winner; I wasn't the biggest fan of the sound before, since it often sounded too busy and the drums usually had little weight to them. Both of those aspects are helped by these pads; the drums sound deeper and heavier, and the bigger soundstage helps the separation quite a bit. Did you know that "The Devil In I" has an echo to the vocals throughout the entire song? It has been my favourite Slipknot song for ages and I've never noticed that, before, yet I instantly noticed it on my first time hearing it with these pads. Even Instrumental music sounds great, mostly due to the bigger soundstage. Vocal songs like Mansons "Minute Of Decay" also sound great. Even towards the rather busy end, Mansons voice is still clearly hearable, even over the drums which have a much larger impact with these pads.
    The comfort is also good. I've larger than average ears and they fit me fine. They are also quite soft, but my head is so tiny I can wear the 1990s comfortably on the smallest setting so that probably doesn't mean much. Really the only complain I have is the fact that these smell quite bad. I'd recommend cleaning them before use. It's not too bad though, shouldn't be a dealbreaker.

      I have also purchased the choise suede for my DT1990's. It makes a huge difference I have to say. Not sure it's all positive though. The best thing in my opinion is increased soundstage, and the bass is just immense. However I do feel that it does overpower a bit and that theres less detail because of it. Also, while the sharpness being reduced a bit was one of my goals, I do feel that it is a bit to much. Will have to play around with my EQ.

      Edit: I did buy the Dekoni Perforated Sheepskin Pads and AB-Swapped them with the normal Sheepskin. I was so surprised, my beyers are now completely different Headphones. The perforated ones literally take away the boosted Bass, wich the DT1770s usually have, and really even out the whole frequency spectrum. Especially the lack of clarity and volume in the upper mids from the Beyers (with Stock pads and Dekoni SS) ist now totally "repaired". The Whole Bass Range is now very "professional" i would say. The Bass is definetly there, BUT he doesnt drown the rest of the freqencies. My DT1770s sound now really "analytical" (Good for Gamers!!) and are also really enjoyable for normal Music Sessions.

What I have found, is that this ear pad is not good at low volume because the extra distance it gives you compared to the stock ear pads makes the sound weird, like it would come from a box, so you have to fill up he empty space by raising the volume. I was listening to music for about 2 hours at a decent volume that I'd find fatiguing o the stock pads while it was a pure joy and pleasant experience with these new pads.

I do agree with what he said but I'll go in future with it. the velour pads fit and feel amazing and sounds great but the choice suede don't fit as nice but feel amazing( feels like a really thin layer of wax paper below the seude outerlayer and the cousin isn't as sofy) but the sound for the suede is amazing. every part of the suede just sounds better. more sound stage with no clarity loss,bit more bass and bit less high end. changing it from quiet to loud just gives it more umph rather then ear rapeing you which is a bonus
      in the end I do agree that the suede pads are better for some quality but for comfort the velours are the top (I still game for hours on end and I have a big head)

    Trying the 880's with the Choice Suede, I wasn't quite happy so I removed the original dampening that was over the driver, this opened them up a lot and brought back some of the sound I lost. Still a little unsure if I like the change as it's very different.

      Try the black cloth pads Beyer uses on the Special Edition DT880 and DT990. I have the DT990 Premium 600 ohm and the DT880 250 ohm Chrome Edition. The black pads work well on both. Slightly warmer but no section of the frequency spectrum is a downgrade.Vocals are slightly warmer and a bit more forward on both headphones compared to the standard velour pad. Beyer knows how to design pads for their cans.

    As a new owner of the DT880 600Ω and having watched this comparison, I ordered the Choice Suede. For me, they made the headphone sound terrible. It gained a bloated and muddy upper bass and lost much of the airiness and sparkle that it originally had. The change was so dramatic that at first I looked at my system to see if somehow I'd hit a wrong button. I put the original pads back on and they sounded great (again). Honestly, I'm not disappointed; it showed me that different earpads really can make a (huge) difference. Experience learning is the best kind. I'm listening via a Quad PA One plus feeding a jumpered A-100, which seems a good combination.

  • @rusinsr
    @rusinsr 4 роки тому +2

    Bought the Dekoni choice leather pads a week ago - my review: worth it. The 50$ investment compared to the 400$ spent for the headphones makes it a no brainer. Wider sound-stage, definitely more bass. (Some songs now have too much of it, but that's the song's fault). Listening to music incorporating binaural elements is almost god-like now. Makes way more of a difference than getting an amp, so if you're on a budget - forget the amp, get some pads. 9/10, just wish they were a bit more breathable.

      Its def a different sound. I didnt like them at first but its really nice to have a different sounding headphone with just a pad swap. I eventually learned to appreciate it as a different flavor for the 880s. Personal taste preferences need to be considered because of what it does to them.
