I consider this book Hemingway's best. Thomas Hudson reminded me of my dad, a man who loved the sea. The last chapter is true Hemingway subtlety. My dad loved the sea because that's where he found his God. He couldn't find God in a home with a family and responsibility. So, he was a lifelong fisherman. I forgave him in my heart after he died, and I understood his childhood and life traumas. I suggest the movie of the same name with George C. Scott, which is my favorite movie. It is profound, and has deep meaning for me. Thank you greatly for the review on my favorite book. Note: I don't think Hemingway was racial at all. He wrote about the realities of the time within settings. His themes in his books...this one especially, are far deeper than race. You might call them religious.
Thanks for taking the time to put together that review. Having read just about everything Hemingway ever published widely, Islands in the Stream was not one of my favorites. I certainly get your point about the three parts being disjointed, and potentially attributing that to the fact that it was published posthumously. Yet I enjoy Hemingway's writing so much that overall I enjoyed the book, and am glad to have read it.
This is my favorite book by far. I have no children by I have two Godaughters. I can relate. Chapter 8... after the fantastic fishing adventure with the boys... Chapter 8 has always sung out to me a loneliness that I think only men can have for their women and their children. I have not finished it yet. I know it's his "suicide" novel so guess I do not want to let it end. Thanks for your review.
@@WhatYaReading thank you. While reading this novel, I did some research on Hemingway. Are you familiar with the iceberg theory? Here’s a link I found very interesting: en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Iceberg_theory Under this theory, maybe the islands are metaphorical for memories in the “stream” which is life?
Hemingway's writing either envelopes you or it doesnt.... I hoped you were one that appreciated his *writing*.. When i heard the character judgments, i felt nauseated... Aww well....
Great review! I enjoyed your openness and objectivity of the book..

Enjoyed the book and your review. I get frustrated, however, when people make decisions in life that lead to their own loneliness.

Thank you.
I really enjoyed your review. We’re on a similar path. I’m also reading a lot of Hemingway.
What do you think is the meaning of the title?
Thanks!
The Islands in The Bahamas where the plot takes place.

Yes I am aware of the iceberg theory. It’s how I talk😂😂🤔
Great review! Any recommendations other than Hemingway?
Depends on your interests. Too many books.
