Hi there I doing research for my essay and I really enjoyed your review. I watched the 1957 movie last week with Rock Hudson. I have to say I was really shocked by the ending but at the same time I feel Hemingway wanted this story to reflect war and loss during those times. Overall, it’s a book I will definitely read again.
I love this book! Like you, I'm not sure if I can call it my favourite Hemingway novel - but my, oh my what an ending! I also recently picked up The Snows of Kilimanjaro, so I'm looking forward to reading more of his short stories
I thought this was a wonderful review. I love this book, and I felt very carried along with your retelling of it. I enjoy your channel! Keep it going. Best wishes!
Enjoyed your review. Like you, I like _The Sun Also Rises_ the most, but I think some of Hemingway’s most beautiful writing is in _A Farewell to Arms_. The amount of drinking you describe is an aspect of the book I had forgotten. I remember hidden vermouth bottles and the brandy on the boat.
I never really understood alcoholism until this novel... Before the end, I felt drunk... Strange feeling... Hence three questions came to my mind: first, what was his budget in drinks, where did he get the money to live this life, and is working for the military the cheapest way to a jet-setting life?
Hi Matthew I watched this movie a few years ago starring Gary Cooper and Helen Hayes made in 1932 this was the original movie in black and white two other versions followed 1951 William Holden 1957 Rock Hudson the original is the best I have been told
One of the best quotes ever in A Farewell to Arms.... "I was blown up while eating cheese"
“That is the left leg, doctor.” 😂

The framing of this more recent video is the best so far. Head Up, front and center
