Thanks! I have a wood burning project and I just ran out of wood stain. Have a giant pot of cheap instant coffee granules and now I have a finished box and I didn't need to go to the hardware store.
I love the way the instant coffee stain looks on the stir sticks. What a great color. And you gave me an idea to use the same stain in distressing some things in our haunted house. Thank you for sharing.
I tried this and it worked beautifully! I didn't have sealer, so I used polyurethane, but it was still just beautiful. I love your videos. Where can I find the blog about making the trunks you made for the gnome house?
I haven't made a whole tutorial but I put up 2 posts with a couple photos and some explanation. Here's the first one I made www.sharonojala.com/2016/01/dollhouse-steamer-trunk-handmade.html
Ok to I'm trying stain this resin wood tray I'm making and dont want to use actually stain, will this bleed when you set cups on it that have condensation? Like if water spills on it?
I would, lol but you would definitely need to seal it in. I would suggested a couple coats of sealer over it and I would use a sealer for heavy traffic. And again, the first coat has to go on quickly and lightly, pass over only once so you don't rub off the stain.. also be sure the stain is completely dry first.
Do you think mixing the coffee grounds with pure alcohol would work? Alcohol would evaporate instantly and leave the wood only with the coffee and would allow using any kind of laquer or varnish etc. since using water-based stain with oil-based finish and so on would not mix.
I like to do a lot of things diy and homemade, hence why I want to use a coffee stain instead of purchasing an expensive stain from the hardware store. Is there anything that can seal it from around the home instead of buying a sealer?
Mineral oil is a non-drying oil. If you're looking for a natural oil to seal it perhaps use Tung oil (be sure the bottle says pure), linseed or walnut. Watch out for allergies as these oils come from nuts. And don't wad up your oily rags for the trash as it's a fire hazard.
If it's a large wooden crate I want to use it on, is it even necessary to use a heat gun for it, since the wood isn't flimsy like your dollhouse floor?
dunno if you guys cares but if you are bored like me during the covid times then you can watch all the latest series on InstaFlixxer. Been watching with my gf during the lockdown =)
No, I don’t think so. It needs to be sealed after it dries so on larger surfaces the stain would become streaky, some coming off before you’d be able to seal it properly
I just came here to know the process and i have never watched a prior video. Please explain the gnome home in one or two sentences so i may live without the mystery haunting me daily.
lol it's a home I built onto a 2 room wooden dollhouse. It ended up being 4'7 with many, many rooms built from foil, cardboard and clay. I have a video tour here, if you're interested in seeing it ua-cam.com/video/gqW7zqT3DfQ/v-deo.html
any type of instant coffee will stain wood... I don't think regular coffee will give you a rich stain, it would probably give you a light stain lacking in color
I had to look at the video again, it’s 7 yrs old so I forgot how I used to seal in coffee. Coffee stain will always be my 1st choice over a chemical wood stain, the smell of actual wood stain is extremely strong even if you do it outside, it lingers so coffee is better for me. The spay sealer was done outside so I didn’t breathe that in and it didn’t linger. I found that to be the lesser of the 2 evils back then. But now a days I seal it with a water based Varathane that has no smell and is soap and water clean up. Of course, as with all my videos, these are ideas only that I share and nothing has to be followed 100%. People can take and leave what they want to.
@@WhereTheGnomesLive Any wood wax/oil, or even Modge Podge would do just as good of a job sealing the wood seeing as it is a doll house. The coffee does look good on the floor but for mine I'm going to use some home made black walnut stain I made last year for the creepier Victorian style I want. Wasn't trying to be an ass or anything, just found it odd that you went for the sealants you did.
do you mean does it last forever? It's been about 5 years for some of mine and so far the color is the same. I think it's sealing it in that keeps the color

that's awesome!!
Thank you so much for Sharing! I'm so doing this in my farmhouse dollhouse! So easy and inexpensive but the results are fabulous!!
yay! I'm so glad to hear that :)

Can it be used on clay or paper mache or only unfinished wood?
The best coffee is surely Italian!! and this is without any doubt!! 😁😃😃one big hello from Italy! 🙂

I will definitely try that! So easy and good looking... Thanks!
would matte varnish work to seal it?

Would you try this on home stairs? Plz say yes haha I really want to try this

Shellac can be used.
Very nice. I think for wood they use mineral oil which is also baby oil and bees wax in a can in a pan of boiling water like a double boiler. Cute
Could you use mineral oil to seal it?
Yeah, why the acrylic?

Great video. Could you just mix the coffee with brush sealer? Thanks.
no, it gets gooey if mixed together
Ok thanks.
You have such a cute voice
thanks!

@Walter Jordan yup, have been using Instaflixxer for years myself :D
is it necessory to use instant coffee
I love that! I must try!
Would this work on a privacy fence
No, I don’t think so. It needs to be sealed after it dries so on larger surfaces the stain would become streaky, some coming off before you’d be able to seal it properly
How do you make the floor lighter like an oak?
can i use mod podge ? to seal it ?
it might be a bit thick and you'd be rubbing off the coffee stain while you apply it, unless you seal it first with the spray like I suggested
Totally trying this on a guitar.
how did it go?
@@Aaron-zd1ws it worked well! I used instant decaf
@@jowardseph Thanks for your reply! if steel wool doesn't work I will be using this. What do you reccomend to seal it?
@@Aaron-zd1ws I can't remember what I used. Some clear coat spray from Home Depot
Why not use acetone instead of water, might prevent warping?
never tried that before. Thanks for the idea!
No problem. Figured it'd evaporate before it has a chance to kink the wood.
Does the smell of coffee still show up in anyway after the gloss?
yes... a slight coffee smell for a little bit but eventually it fades away
Thank you so much for this. For both parts. I'm going to do exactly this in my dollhouse!
How bad would it fade if I tried a wax sealer?
Syllavr what will happen if I don't seal it ?
Thanks great tip! 👍🏼
Very cool. Thanks for sharing.

Using this method on my viking cup...anyone know how long it takes minwax polyurethane semigloss to cure for it to be food safe?
🏍️ This Viking cup sounds interesting.
I've got a silly question. Wouldn't ants/mice try to eat/nip at the wood? Wanna try staining popsicles sticks for my hamster's cage
mice dislike coffee just found out. use coffee as mice repellent xD! PS. same with ants.
@@rekostarr7149 Okay haha that's great. Thanks 😊
Well don't make it to drink and add sugar to it.
Nice .. but wont it be smelled like coffee ? Toys for example
I haven't noticed but I do seal it after so that would take care of most of it. If there was a lingering coffee smell it would eventually disappear
Even if it does smell like coffee, it's still much better than the smell of normal stain
can i use any type of coffee
any type of instant coffee will stain wood... I don't think regular coffee will give you a rich stain, it would probably give you a light stain lacking in color
Coffee molds, so have you ever seen any mold develop over these stains?
never, ever. I've been doing this for years. I also dry the stain completely then add a clear coat sealer over top.
It works great!!
amazing
You use coffee so your doll house isn't full of chemicals but then you seal it will stuff that can cause cancer???
