Thank you for this review. I've struggled multiple times (when looking for something new) and nearly picked up Johnny High Rye. I'm glad that I passed, but again at that price point it does have value - just not *over* the single malt options. Cheers Gents!
Seeing "high rye" on a bottle of Johnnie Walker immediately turned me off to this whiskey.
It's really not that bad but it's NOT what I'm used too
There's an article in the latest Whisky Advocate that reveals where the rye whisky component comes from. Cameronbridge made 100% rye mashbill whisky in their column stills while Teaninich distillery produced the same mashbill whisky in their pot stills. Having had Teaninich's single malt whisky, I would love if Diageo released the Teaninich component as a special release.
Dillion is spot-on with the comment about peat to balance and cover over flaws. Johnnie Black is the perfect demonstration of this. The peat is soft and subtle, but it does help to mask the grain-forward Johnnie profile. Interestingly, this has Coal Ila in it (must be a very small amount).
For those of us not in love with peat, Dylan's continual insistence that peat will make it better doesn't help -review what's there please.
Also, gotta say I get a giggle every vid with Dutch's reaction to "delightful" Dylan - never fails 😅
When does the "ITNEEDASAPEAT" Shirt coming out???? CLASSIC!
Nice vid Dutch! Quick question have you guys reviewed Mezcal yet?
Not yet, but we have some in the pipeline
“Now /w respect” 💀💀💀
Dutch: no one believes it
Me: he’s right, ya know
Its minimally aged 3yrs bc thats a must from where it comes from...or so i read
Guys you need to try the compass box Artist and Glasgow blends.
"I'm getting a touch of formaldehyde on the nose" 😂
i feel dillon's ideas on peat as a possible balancing factor have something to them:
i recently opened a glendronach 'traditionally peated' - the neck pour didn't really stand out to me as of yet, but i did note the peat made it a more "one whole" than some other bottles. - a leveling out, but also an addition of substance.
We actually tested his theory in the bonus footage! (It worked)
Do High West Campfire. Never heard of another scotch bourbon blend like that
Not sure where to put recommendations for your Ultimate Spirit Competition so I’ll include it under here. Would love to see a Glen Scotia review. Specifically Glen Scotia Victoriana or the 18yr. Victoriana gets a ton of hype. Plus, Im sure Dillon would enjoy that it’s cask strength. Great juice and CURIOUS how it would stack up against your crazy hard scoring system!
I mix it with standard black and green Monster. Otherwise it's good.
I don’t mind that you guys review these drinks that are made for cocktails in mind and try them straight
High Unique for sure. I don't know if there is any other high rye scotch. Correct me if I'm wrong.
😂😂 formaldehyde yes i can understand but this is my 2nd bottle and for $20 at walmart yes! I love me some black but red is my normal bc its in my price range...i luz my scotch lol...as long as its minomally aged 3yrs or better amd from Irelamd scottland 🥰❤
This one just didn’t do it for me, pretty harsh from what I recall and I don’t see picking it up again
Locally here, High Rye and JW Black are both $40. Would it still be a bronze at $40 instead of the $25 you paid?
Good question. The point total would be really close! I'd say borderline
Love your channel. Any other channel reviewing this 'nothing whisky', I'd do a hard pass on watching.
I don’t use this as a neat pour…but i use this instead of bourbon to make an old fashioned or Manhattan cocktail…
This blend makes a,darn interesting Boulevardier.
@mannacler this makes a good whiskey sour too
$21 in HI 04/13/2024
