Very good observation. The discussion about how and why hip-hop has sucked for the last nearly two decades has centered around lyrical content. But that is largely a distraction -- it is true that the lyrics of mainstream hip-hop today suck compared to the past, but a lot of legendary hip-hop from back in the days was quite ignorant in its message and not very lyrically complex. Then there are the beats, and this is a very obvious shift for the much worse, especially in the mainstream (which has to do with the shift towards a synthetic sound, sampling limitations, etc.). But almost nobody ever talks about the flows, and that is where the decline has been no less dramatic. Back in the 90s you had these complex varied flows, something that today you basically never hear, and that includes even the critically acclaimed rappers who are supposedly carrying the torch and also the majority of the underground rappers, and, which is the most puzzling, even old school rappers who didn't use to rap that way back in the days but do so now. I don't know how to describe it exactly with words, but today rappers are basically reciting their lyrics, and there is no flow to it whatsoever -- they recite one bar, then pause, then another bar, etc. boring as hell, borderline spoken word. It is so refreshing to hear somebody who has obviously recognized the problem and worked hard on resurrecting true MCing. Also, it helps that he has a deep powerful voice, something else that is rare these days
