This is a wonderful piece, VICE. And I don’t have any tattoos nor will I ever. I have a ton of respect for these artists and the tradition they’ve passed onto our country.
i am a tattoo artist myself and my style of tattooing looks way different from everything shown in this video, but i loved every minute of watching it. so many wise words spread and just humble approach for the work they do. very, very inspiring. thank u vice 🙏
woah that's absolutely amazing, I was so surprised when he said a Polynesian style tattoo artist was in there shop, I just love their diversity within the shop
What a dynamic duo. I've always wanted to be tattooed by Horioshi 3! I wish I was in America to get inked by one of them. Best wishes from Australia 🇦🇺
as a person with tattoos in japan, I can vouch how much discrimination there is. If anyone from my workplace found out I had tattoos, I'd probably be fired on the spot. I can't go in public baths and have to cover up when I go to gyms. But it's worth it to me
Yeah it seems it's frozen. But basically what he said there was a law passed in2001 that allowed only health professionals to handle needles. So technically if you want to work as tattooist you have to go to college and become a nurse or a doctor
@@nullvalue9901 Ah thanks, my Japanese isnt up to speed anymore :/ Sadly no one to talk to anymore right now. But yeah, now that you said it I remember this been mentioned in another documentary.
I'm currently trying to read "outlaws of the marsh" trying to understand the context of these tattoos. I'm hoping I can get a back piece from one of these greats. Might take me a decade or something, but I'm not touching my back for anything else.
I don't think it's just the Japanese people that have a distain towards ink. I feel it's a lot of the older generation, those who hold onto tradition much stronger, especially those of eastern decent (I'm talking about my experience living in America)
also ppl don't get tattoos because of religious reasons! like in Islam it is forbidden to get a tattoo or to tattoo someone. despite that if u ask the new generation of Muslims they will tell u that tattoos are the one haram thing that they wish they could get. personally i would get a whole sleeve if i could ngl XD
Interesting how they dance around/don't address the fact that Horiyoshi III revoked the "Horitaka" title he bestowed on "Taki", and basically disowned him.
Anyone know where I can get a print or poster of the “Dream of the 90s” piece at 20:16 ??? Idc if it is a fake. I really like it and want to hang it on my wall.
I've always wanted a Sakura fubuki tattoo, but my Japanese family members would always discourage it, saying I would never be able to go to an onsen ever again. Ironically I don't even like onsens 😂 I'd love to get it in the traditional technique but daaaaaaaayamn that looks like it hurts like hell 😬
I heard its waaaay more painful than getting it done with a machine. Because they have to press real hard so the pigment stays in the skin. I dont think I would ever get a Tebori (thats the technique) tattoo but man ppl who get whole bodysuits with that technique are hard as fuck.
Saving to have a full back done!!! And the wait list is 3/4 years!!! Gonna cost around 27,000$ plus the travel and stay expense. Damn.....gonna work my ass off.
Going to hot springs or bath houses in Japan is supposed to be a nightmare for people with tattoos. I have tattoos because I got sick of waiting to go to Japan and something or the other came up every year the past 4 years: I'm no nearer to going now than I was before I got tattooed
Miko Pedero 🤦🏽♂️🤦🏽♂️ it means I have Asian family members and a lot of them , none have that much beard and it’s common for asians to not have a lot of hair on their bodies lmao there’s nothing to argue about
Yoooooo Horitomo's the guy who designed tattoos for the yakuza game series!! So sick.
wait what? for real? damn!
@@TempChong yep, all of them, it's insane
holy shit that's so mf sick dude. kiryu got a sick ass dragon tattoo from him. he's the real life legend.
You can see the similarities in some of the tattoos shown, especially the hannya.
Knew it once I saw his dragon!

Currently honored to be tattooed by Taki. Hopefully, I'll get tattooed my Horitomo in the future

Some day sooner or later I am getting inked by this guy.. woha great work !
Japanese tattoos are cool man!
Amazing video! Just a note for VICE, the subtitles at 18:45 don't progress past "a law that allowed".
I noticed this too
Anyone know what it was supposed to say? I wonder what the law allowed
Fuck yeah tattoo’s should be considered as art... you are literally a walking canvas and i think it’s amazing
yeah tattoo is ART

Hurst more but is slower and with pauses, so go for it, you'll get through it and all the pain will be totally worth!
Isn't there any onsen you can go with tattoo... Or is every onsen the same??
I wonder how that stick needle feels to get tatted with ?? 🤔🤔
It feels like a needle going in your skin
It feels like getting poke with a dull lead pencil but sharp at the same time

Anyone notice the hells angles tattooo om his chest?!
Had one on the forearm as well
If you also check his back tattoo of the samurai you'll notice on his arm a skull with S in each eye, representing the SS from nazi germany
And AFFA on his shoulders stands for Angels Forever.
Incept z I don’t think hells angles are nazis there roots come from American soldiers
