      So sorry for your hardship. Sounds like your wife helps! I’m 73 & still looking & yes, hoping. Hang in there, I guess maybe be bit more self-accepting of your limitations & not force things to the point of being unhealthful or feeling the martyr?
      Anyway, the K-rail you freaked out at, early on, are designed wide at their base, so even if run up on, most vehicles will be well clear. I.e., No matter how close they may “feel,” they ain’t gonna jump out at ya. You have some of the best FSD narratives, though being perhaps overly subjective may detract from their value.
      Btw, what do you think of FSD Navigator voice, rather than being directive (“In 500 feet turn right.”) instead be informative (“We are slowing to turn right onto …” or “In about a minute we will start merging right to take the … exit.”), while in control?
      And if you don’t mind, as a new M3P FSD owner & those other of us with no chance of scoring into the Beta, do you have any idea of how far behind regular Auto Navigation is behind the Beta? Are there safety issues in post-Beta that are fixed in Beta that are prioritized for OTAUs? E.g., On my road-trip to TeslaCon & Starbase from SoCal, I noticed that it had trouble knowing to slow down from high speeds for curves & instead chose to just “go for it” without slowing. However, like a 15yo, once it realized it was over its head (you could feel it coming), rather than just slow down a bit to at least reduce G-loading, it would just “throw its hands up” hoping you were there to keep us from running straight off the road. I was able to replicate this behavior fairly consistently, especially on right handlers. Are you Beta testers able to note such things & let your followers know if/when the are corrected in Beta & have actually made it into general release? TIAFYH!

    I will keep saying this repeatedly, you're by far the best FSD channel on UA-cam. Unbiased, informative, funny. Every time Tesla releases a new FSD version I look forward to your video on it because I know that you'll be one of the only ones who truly shows both the ups and downs. I also really prefer the way you record commentary over top of the video instead of the live commentary most other channels do. It makes it sound far more professional. That being said, take all the time you need to recover and deal with your personal stuff. Your health is far more important than getting videos out as soon as possible. We'll all be here, whenever you're ready. Also, tell your wife she's truly fantastic.

    6:20 The problem was the camera couldn't detect the right side of the road. It was looking into the driveway and registered that as the road, but the Van being parked there halted navigation. When you manually pulled forward, you can see the navigation map correctly re-draw the road after passing the driveway. It seems like the software has a hard time distinguishing the appropriate path of travel if the road bends behind a wall.

    • @jetjazz05
      @jetjazz05 2 роки тому +5

      Seems like it has problems doing a lot of basic things that by version 10 of the software you'd assume have been heavily ironed out by now lol... I mean it's been a decade, tons of money and AI poured into this technology and it still has so many issues it can't be trusted to just run you to the grocery store. Kind of amazing to me after all the logged data and stuff that it has to be hand held like this to get a proper outcome...

    • @silver7788
      @silver7788 2 роки тому +4

      @@jetjazz05 I feel the same way, it feels programmed in many cases and not "learned", much more like a machine than anything resembling intelligence. That's my personal pet peeve with the word "AI", it's more scripted than intelligent. When I tell my google assistant to play music or check if a certain country is in the EU, in the first case it gives me every single time the exact same response for 4 yrs now no matter how I phrase and read it out loud the whole Wikipedia page with all countries in the second case...
      We are still far far away from true AI and self-driving cameras, sensors, and processing power will have to advance orders of magnitude but the grunt work has to be laid down sooner or later it's good that development is happening non the less.
      I'm just skeptical that the data is really biased towards the American way of driving, big cars, mostly long commutes, wider roads, car-centric infrastructure a lot of lights and signs. In Europe where a lot of roads are narrower, commutes are much shorter, there are more pedestrians, bikes, cars are also much smaller and the culture around driving is different it might get a wrong idea and especially in countries like India or Thailand where driving a car is an art and life-threatening experience at the same time I don't see tesla ever finding itself among that chaos.

    Personally I'm against self driving vehicles on principle, at least for a few more decades/until it unequivocally matches and/or exceeds the average human perception and ability. With that being said, its fascinating to watch and analyse how the AI handles things at present stage. I also have to concede that although I'm currently against the working idea, the AI demonstrated in this video does drive notably better than many humans in the counties I live and work in (Southern UK) , though I suppose that's only saying so much lol. Great video.

    • @71prim8

  • @GeorgeSunderland
    @GeorgeSunderland 2 роки тому +959

    4:35 "... the beta does a nice job of getting through this narrow road...". This is why I'm confident this tech isn't ready for the UK/Europe yet, that is a perfectly normal 2way road width for the UK, which would have human drivers doing 40-50mph in opposing directions, which may cause issues for the AI.

      its not rare in France that I need to eat more than 50cm grass (in both meanings : wheel going 50cm in the bank, covered by 50cm high grass ) to cross some one in opposite direction. and you MUST NOT slow down below 35 mph, because you need inertia to get out of it. if you go too slow in wet mud, you get stuck in it. it may be different with a 4x4 (since Tesla has independent motors on each side it's almost a 4x4 ) but with my legacy car with legacy differential (no limiting diff ), if I stop in the mud, I stay there forever. so need inertia to let the car go in the grass, then get out. if you stop with one wheel in grass or wet mud, you just can't get out.
      this means, I have to know the weather, can guess if there is plain flat earth under the grass (and not a tranch ), and be confident that without any traction, inertia and front left wheel will be enough to get me out.
      on some roads this is a daily challenge. especially in rainy days.

Even though we might miss some information about what is happening immediately in front of the car, I personally think this new view brings in much more information about the environment, the whole context, the distance from the curb, etc, even when the car brakes slightly.
    My only suggestion would be to try that view again a little (just a little) closer to the car, trying to get a better view of what's happening immediately ahead. Great job!

    Do you mean to tell me, apart from the 3 or 4 moments he pointed out, this car drove itself for 15 minutes? Through narrow streets, non-functioning traffic lights, cyclists, pedestrians on the road with pets and even situations where it encounters indecisive drivers? That's insane. I'm thinking an autonomous flying vehicle would be a way easier task for a computer than this. I'm impressed, I thought the self drive thing was only a highway function. Automatic reverse is a great function to work on. Thank you for the thoughtful and human approach to these videos. I’m sure they take 15 times as long to make as they do to watch. You are doing a fantastic job of documenting the evolution of FSD through the various releases in these highly complex and difficult situations, many of which I would have to stop and consider the appropriate action. Thanks. As I was watching this, I realized that while this type of driving is critical to achieve autonomy, it is not actually how I would use it as a consumer. I need improvements in the other end of the spectrum, long long high speed freeway driving. Your comments about how the car reacts more like a person are exactly my “comfort” issues around FSD freeway driving. Cheating to the side of a lane when passing a large vehicle, setting up a high speed turn by starting outside in the lane, turning on a radius to get inside at the apex and moving back out as you exit. Also, the compute speed often seems just a millisecond slow with “S” turns, construction lane shifts, and decreasing radius turns while light breaking. I appreciate that videos on these would be very time consuming and expensive to make, but I sense that developer time is being spent on these situations, at the expense of what I consider to be the biggest use case for FDS. Thank you for all that you do, and stay grateful to have such a fantastic partner.

I'm sure it takes more effort than the other one and it is a little harder to focus on those what is in front and what the visualizer is showing at the same time. However, I think it gives good insight into the whole situation. As far as talking about other non-Tesla related AI things have you thought about trying to compare a Comma AI system to Autopilot? I've yet to see anyone do that recently and while it requires some logistical hurdles it would definitely go right into your channels topics. I hope you feel better man. I hope you sort things out, love the videos! I'm very interested in channels like Not Just Bikes, which explains the difference between car-centric and people-centeric street design. I life in the Netherlands myself, and I believe a very different approach to city design (the one used in the Netherlands) would be beneficial for other countries as well. I'm curious whether you agree with this and how you would see a full version of autopilot being used and sold in a country designed like that, because I feel like autopilot/FSD Beta is primarily focused on a relatively closed circuit of only cars, with few points of conflicts with pedestrians and cyclist. This could be a problem if autopilot would be used in countries like the Netherlands, because there are so many more (unpredictable) people on the road.
    A soul crushing commute doesn't exist in the Netherlands, and I truly believe the only way those commutes can be eliminated in other countries is not by implementing FSD, but changing the infrastructure so that it is focused on people, not cars. I'm very interested in your opinion about this.
    Again, love to all of your videos, keep up the good work!

      I think FSD would do really well in the Netherlands, at least in most cases. There are situations where it would just sit for extended periods of time, as it tries to not injure the bicyclists around it, but from my point of view, the roads in the Netherlands are quite OK. I'd be more worried about the other manufacturers, as Tesla copes much better with the chaos that is non-car traffic and small roads. I could totally imagine residential roads like it was navigating along in this video being part of some town, e.g. Middelburg (on Zeeland). I don't know about large cities like Amsterdam.

    Subscribed. Liked. The video perspective was what drew me in. I'd love for a vid or two to cover what and how you have your camera's set up, what happens in post, how you get the interesting video game like view you've saved in your hip pocket, etc. Kind of a 'behind the scenes' view.

    I like the camera angle, I think it would be nice to have it higher/further forward until you can almost see the hood.
    I hope you are able to do what you want. We all struggle sometimes.

    Damn man shit got real there in the ASMR style part. You sound like you are another person talking about you and how your are doing. It's super great to be able to acknowledge what you are really feeling. That's not easy to do and great to hear about your super supportive wife! Thanks for the great content. I really like the new perspective because of how it gives a better overview of what the car sees, those things can see EVERYTHING with their sensors. Best of luck with it all. Subscribed!

    this is the first video of yours I watch thanks to recommendation, and I like that camera angle quite well! the hasn't been a moment where I was like "wow I wish I could view more from the front" or something. I'm on a big scree on my pc tho, maybe on a small mobile screen? I dunno.
    wishing you luck with anything you're going through. you deserve to be in a comfortable place, doing what you love. no matter what it is and how much it affects this channel or how we view you, we're not here to judge, and I'm happy to support you by watching these videos. take care!

    You are the best channel by far when it comes to autonomous driving and insights.
    While the promise of Semi-Autonomous driving as an aid is very promising, I feel the selling of of autonomous full self driving is decades (if not longer) away. Can you imagine the nightmare scenario of being in the backseat of the car not focusing on what is happening as the car attempts to navigate roads to become stuck and give up (cars honking, traffic piling up, impatient drivers trying to get around your vehicle, etc.)?
    The 1st bridge to full autonomous self driving should have been a drivers aid that is extremely robust (and learning) but gives the driver early opportunity to take over when conditions warrant. This may take a decade to become a potential fully autonomous vehicle but it would have given the public and regulators time to grow with the technology and sort out who has the best approach (not marketing) to getting to fully autonomous driving. We did not get from the Wright Brothers to Airbus A350s in one generation of aircraft and expecting to go to FSD in a decade was/is overreach and hubris.

    I have watched several of these videos through the years. Sometimes they are good, sometimes alright. This is entertaining and interesting with the growth, yet it has a calming effect. You have a new sub. Here is another 👍because I am allowed only one otherwise.

    Hope you get through your rough patch. Thanks for posting, great work as always. A suggestion - the tough work of putting videos together will give you some required positive feedback and help propel you out of the funk.
