In this episode, I take a close look at Mike Campbell's Broadcaster and its peculiarities. I also look at what amp and effects he used with the guitar to achieve the stellar tones on Don Henley's "Boys Of Summer." The guitar was extensively used on Tom Petty recordings through the years, and he still considers it his most valuable guitar.
Details on Campbell's Broadcaster
www.askzac.com...
Why did Fender call it the "Heartbreaker" and not a "Broadcaster?" Interestingly enough, Mike Campbell gave one of his signature Fender guitars to Kenny Vaughan, after he played on a Marty Stuart album that Mike produced.
We also discuss Tom Petty's "Red Dog" Telecaster, and Campbell's gold top Les Paul.
For Jerry Jones Guitars, we look at some plausible info pertaining to the lawsuit with Evets/Danelectro, and a different story of how Jerry got into building Silvertone inspired instruments.
On Jimmy Bryant, we discuss how he did not write "Only Daddy That'll Walk The Line." How Jim Alley offered him writing credit for playing on the demo for it. The song would be a big hit for Waylon Jennings and others. #askzac #guitartech #telecaster
These sessions are gold, Zac. They feed my guitar obsession, and fill in all the blanks in my knowledge.
The Kenny Vaughn interview was great, Kenny is one of my all time favorite guitarist. I was lucky to see him and Marty Stuart in Austin about 20 years ago. Kenny was wearing a lime green suit, hat and boots with a matching lime green tele. It was the best live performance I've ever experienced.
i looked up all the references Kenny casually dropped in that interview.. I learned so much
"So Jimmy played on a demo session and ended up getting *mailbox money* for the rest of his life." Mailbox money! This is my new favorite term. Brilliant storytelling, Zac.
Man I have always loved Mike Campbell. Excellent musician and songwriter
@AskZac have u ever done a video on how a Songwriter can protect their work & at the same time shop it around & who do they shop their songs around to exactly? I just figured that since u go in depth, & u make such informative videos. That you might have already covered this topic. If not I'm sure there are a bunch of folks out there who would be really excited if you did. Have a great holiday season.
Great idea
Wow , that’s the first time I’ve ever seen a shorty 12, I’m in love !!!!!!
"Fenders were parts guitars" I wish this was said more often in the guitar world
your theme on the shorty is why i keep coming back! Almost a year aqo i threw caution to the wind and bought a 2017 american pro tele as my first six string guitar. i had been goofing around on bass and ukulele for a few years but thought i should dive in to the deep end. you are an inspiration and i thank you Sir.
ALWAYS great seeing your videos, glad you're bringing these amazing guitars from the past to show .....great job my friend.....
Thanks again!
Just noticed the Snow Speeder back there. Heck yes. I knew you was good people, Zac.
My Tele is a 54 neck that was saved from a trash bin and a 60s body . The guitar is a total mutt , but I love it .
Love it!
Very educational and interesting.God continued blessings ...like how you Do your videos even saying sometimes learning new info and making corrections.
So I was a kid had a Silvertone just like that but I wanted something more popular of the day. Now after hearing you play it I wish I had kept it. You made it sound GREAT.
So nice of you
I'm a little late for this video. It's April 2022. I just got the 2nd Dirty Knobs CD. I know why he named his band "Dirty Knobs." If you never clean your fretboard (as on Mike's Broadcster) and then adjust your amp what do you get? On the CD cover Mike's standing next to a white Firebird and and outside the window is a flaming Rickenbacker. The title of thr CD is "External Combustion." On the credits he thanks EHX for the Mel 9 Melotron which is a stomp box that makes a guitar sound like a Melotron keyboard.
That 12 string sounds amazing!
Wow the Jimmy Bryant songwriting story was amazing! In the words of the grail knight from Indiana Jones, “you have chosen wisely”.
Thanks ❤🎉
I always appreciate a mention of the Great Steve Wariner
Great stuff, thank you ZAC.🎸👍🏻
My pleasure!
Keep er coming Zac
I saw the title and the only thought I had was YYYEEEEESSSSSS!!!
Great video
Great episode, it’s awesome finding out the details of the great Mike Campbell’s Fender. Looking forward to the next one.
That 12 string sounded great for the intro tune. Beautiful sound.
A while back some kind soul posted the "Mike Campbell: The Guitars" documentary on UA-cam. The second time I watched it I polished off an entire bottle of Shiraz. It was glorious.
Thanks so much, Zac! I feel like I learn more from your show than almost any other (great info about Mr. Mike Campbell and his 'caster!). I hope to be able to catch one of these episodes in real time at some point. Cheers!
Awesome, thank you!
Hey Zac-Man, Mike Campbell here. I was gonna give you one of my signature Heartbreaker Signature guitars until I saw you dissin' my dang Broadcaster.
Nice!
Zac , Thank You . Long time watcher just realized I never subscribed . Fixed that .Those Mike Campbell the Guitars vids were filmed by Justin Kreutzmann son of Bill the Drummer from the Dead .Good stuff . Zacs The sherlock of guitars in this vid . Very cool .
Of course I missed it live. (I do have a Drs note, & my old trusty note I forged Moms signature on, that I used exclusively my last to years of HS👌) I learn so much stuff. I played guitar 50+ yrs, but was never a guitar geek. You know Fender, Gibson, Gretsch, etc., I knew them but they were always just guitars until about the last 20 yrs. I had a FB friend who bought a Broadcaster when they were new!!! & met a girl on Twiiter Who's family was given 1 by some C&W guitarist. Real. Of course the only ones I've seen were in photos. Love your vids. It's real bad to have guitars stolen. I've had several, which a coupke ended up being 1962 or 64 Duo Sonic & a 1965 Mustang, worth some money. But I hate guitar thieves, I mean steal the tv or money. Any way. Great, interesting vid Zach.
⚓️ Thanks Zac 😎 another rabbit hole, it’s a nice guitar…. end of story. Five Watt Word is really good, because it’s brief… packed full of information. Guitar education is a good start with Norman’s Rare Guitars w/Mark Agnesi & Five Watt World.
Zac... As a long time Mike Campbell and Tom Petty superfan..... I'd like to really thank you for clearing that up. I first saw a full page spread of Mike's 'Broadcaster' in Guitarist magazine around 1998. It really didn't look right to me. Even the body looked like a strip job. I know some early Telecasters were maybe done in a natural finish(?) But this looked like a 70s strip. Of course I also thought that Mike Campbell would know better than me. And of course it is now a classic guitar! The MOST famous 'Broadcaster'. When he bought it in 78(?) It was only a 20(ish) year of guitar! Thanks for respectfully clearing up the issue once and for all Zach. Paul. New Zealand
Thanks Zac, I enjoyed the stream as usual.
I have a Rocket. Great amp. Can’t believe more people don’t use old Ampegs. I’d put my Gemini I up against a Deluxe
Good choice!
Have you ever played a properly functional Gemini I?
Bahamas plays a Silvertone that looks a lot like that one and it sounds great. I saw him a couple of weeks ago and he played it for over half the show (switching with a pink tele) w/o a band and it sang.
Very cool video!! Awesome story on the broadcaster…….and Dan electro was local brand in NJ….TWANG CITY…………
Very cool
As much as I am a tele-twang lover, I would love to have a Truetone Lounge with Kenny Wayne Shepherd.
(I never clicked on a Truetone Lounge video faster than I did the Jimmy Olander interview! I only wish that that interview was another 90mins.)
The broadcaster is all well in good but we need to here about Campbell's powerful Red Dog!
Kenny Vaughan can explain the Stratosphere Boogie 12/6 doubleneck tuning. Kenny used it on his "V" album on the song "Hot Like That." A few years ago he told me that flatwounds sound better than round, and said that he uses a custom gauge string set. Questions? Ask Kenny.
I will text him!
Hi Zac, sorry I missed the stream, what a great post. How lucky was Jimmy Bryant? Wow! 😎🎙🎸✅
Very!
Hi Zak, the volume balance between the voice and guitar.
the desert rose band! hell yeah
I am 100% no expert but I think you might be combining two people because Andy Brauer is the guy I know that had the rental service in the 80s in fact he was how Dave Friedman got out to LA from Detroit and there is also a Gary Brawer that writes for a guitar player (although Andy likely has too)… OK know it all moment over… Awesome channel!
Andy wrote for GP mag in the 80s. I have stacks of issues with his articles.
@@AskZac that makes sense, I know Andy was everywhere in the 80’s and 90’s. I’m just not familiar with the Gary you referenced talking about Mike Campbell’s signal path. I was having a “how many guitar players does it take to change a lightbulb” moment!
I love every second of your channel, really flippin’ cool!
RE: Boys of Summer - Did Don Henley write the vocal melody as well as the lyrics or did Mike Campbell have the melody with the track? I've heard this story before and it's never been clear who wrote the actual melody.
I think Mike just had the track, no melody.
I just hit the like button on command.
Just came back from Willie.
Awesome content as always Zac!!! :)
Appreciate it!
@@AskZac I'm a HUGE Petty fan, and Campbell is great. Makes me want to watch the "Runnin' Down a Dream" documentary for the 20th time :) Love Petty's version of Hank Williams's "Lost Highway" in that documentary :)
Great stuff !
Thanks!
Hey Zac,
Great video (as always)! I must be a complete gearhead, I had to watch the whole video! Lol!
You rock!
@@AskZac Thank you Zac. :-)
I like learnin' stuff. 'Specially stuff that I wasn't aware I wanted to know! Huh?
I apologize for being a know it all or if somebody already commented but I think you’re referring to Andy Brauer. He had Andy Brauer studio rentals in North Hollywood back in the day.
You are absolutely correct. I had a migraine, and the meds put me in a deep fog. Thanks for helping me.
Zac is like ‘’telecaster google’’!
With more cobwebs....
Maybe Kenny could loan you his Mike Campbell guitar for the next live...
Country Cabin jazz all day long
Seinfeld had the series “Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee”,… maybe you should have a series “Guitarists in Cars Getting Towed”! Sorry,… random thought.
Wouldn't Campbell's neck be date-stamped?
Isn't Gary Brawer in San Francisco?
It was Andy Brauer, not Gary.
@@AskZac My bad Zac. 👍
Why does the body look different too the natural wood look ?
Hey Zac! I have some up-close photos I got of Kenny with the guitar during a show in Florida I can email you if you’d like to check it out. You can see the bridge pickup fairly clearly in a few of them. Thanks for the outstanding content!
Very cool. I mention that MC gave KV a sig guitar in this video.
Cool stuff man. Funny how these histories from 30 years ago are disputed by so many and we take it on blind faith that history from our far-distant antiquity are accepted as 'gospel'. Makes me go 'hhmmm'.
Sometimes new info comes up. We used to think there were 1948 Broadcasters, then the tooling invoices were found. Now we know the first production guitars were in 1950.
How about a podcast on the mandocaster like skaggs played in the 80's
I will see what I can find.
Ok… asking the ‘community’ ? I have punished the first three frets on a cheap Yamaha…. beginner/cowboy victim. How to replace these? Thanks 🎸
partial refret
Zac, I've been trying to find the "Heart Breaker" guitar on Fender's website and on Reverb. I also searched on "Mike Campbell" in both places. No luck so far. Where can I find this guitar?
Fender’s website only lists current production models, and Reverb will only pull up an item if there are any currently for sale. Reverb does have general information on numerous items that will pull up if none are currently listed, but these are too rare for that.
These were Masterbuilt Custom Shop guitars produced as a limited edition in 2016. They only made 25 production models (and I’m sure some prototypes for Mr. Campbell, but I don’t know how many). As you can imagine they sold out quickly. I’m not exactly sure of the original price, but I think it was in the $6-8,000 range. I’ve been buying on Reverb since 2017 and I have only seen one come up for sale. Needless to say, it was significantly more expensive than the original price, I think it was in the $15-20,000 range. It sold quickly.
❤
Do you have any idea the wiring?
I think post 67/modern
Hey Zac what was that lick/ song on that silvertone? The one you played on the neck pickup?
I was just messing around.
Hey Zac, what kind of slide are you using? I love the black look, and have been looking for a slide that doesn’t go over the second knuckle, like yours.
It was a gift. No idea. I think it was made from a real wine bottle.
@@AskZac Thanks! Guess I know what I’m asking for this Xmas…
Zac try to get Brad Paisley's to do a show with u
Gary Breuer? You mean Andy.
Yep.....
Good lord. I love it but I'm glad my chick isn't within earshot of this one cuz you could send this video to some potential flood victims. It is dry! 😂❤❤❤
What’s Keith stirring up now? lol
Mikes gonna be disappointed when he watches this..
He found this out when the custom shop made the 30 copies back in 2016
So is it a mandolin trying to be an electric, or an electric wishing to be a mandolin??? Hmmm
Its an electric 12-string capo'd at the 12th fret.
@@AskZac it's very cool
