XC HST overtaken by GWR HST Dawlish 18/06/16

- Although not an unknown move, certainly quite rare in this case, XC 1V52 0600 Glasgow-Paignton was running 31 minutes late and the south coast line between Exeter and Newton Abbot had gotten very busy, so the signaller used the infrastructure appropriately utilising the bi-directional running on the up main to allow regulation for the on time GWR HST express 1C84 1306 Paddington-Penzance. I was just fortunate to be filming it all at the time.

You can’t get much better than that. Loved your surprise. Priceless! Ecstatic lover of railways and the world just walks by.
They do this when the Dawlish air show is on. First time I saw it I flinched before the overtake!
Glorious video mate! Miss these so much
I think the word 'Mega' springs to mind.
Also, 'Right place, right time'.
Great video.
Andrew Holloway p
"Mega"?
First time iv ever seen a train on p2 wrong way on up line heading down what a great catch
Very nice that is quite an unusual move the first time I've seen anything like it, thanks for sharing - Kyle
Very nice! does happen every so often!
Very nice horn exchange too! :)
modelrailwayCORP no from what I read in the description the XC train was running 30 mins late and instead of that affecting the FGW they routed it past the XC hst and so forth
just got my opera extension working for this vid, am well impressed. Video excellent as well.
I love this! Great shot!!
Super sweet horn, love it.
Great capture! Unusual too.
Perfect timing mate. Amazing video 😀👍🏻
britishrailwayfan thank you. I was very lucky.
The "reversible working look both ways" warning sign makes so much more sense now
Now that's something you don't see everyday. You was at the right place at the right time
Superb catches !
Many winters ago, our HST to Penzance used the up line hereabouts because the down line was being lashed by huge waves during a storm. The waves were washing right over the train.
Sorry, the spray was washing over the train. The waves were threatening the ballast of the down track.
@@brucewilliams8714 This is when the tracks were then broken and the line closed for repairs, if I am correct?
Brilliant video 👍
There's a lot of bi-directional working on the GWR. It is also possible to do this now between Crewe and Cheadle Hulme.
Congratulations on 600 subscribers!
Class43Harrison thanks. Only just realised.
IC125EG ok. Congratulations. 👍😀🚂. Are you uploading again soon?
What fantastic video
Fantastic vid .
125: toot toot! (Haha driver got sense of humour)
yeah he has haha
Cracking video!
Well that was exciting 'I've just soiled my anorak,
Lol
:0
😂😂😂
You need to toilet train yourself.
Great catch ! love it !
Awesome video I have subscribed
What a shame the Valentas arent still around this would have sounded PROPER!! Superb video
We still have the VP185s...
Are they still kicking around?
What is it made of, aluminium foil? Not a straight panel on them.
Awesome!
Nice!
Do they still have pirates in Penzance?
Hey nice video bro, keep it up!! 😁😊
When we walked down this section of track in summer 2019, they drivers would always sound there train horn to you.
Still do mostly if you give them a wave
love the reaction
once i saw a 220 overtake a 150 just like that :) cool vid
I used to drive the 43's out of Kings X up the ECML... With 4500 hp under the bonnet ( 2250 hp ) one up front and one up the botty there was plenty of power on tap... Pulling out of the station on notch five with the Paxman Valenta turbo's screaming their little heads off and clouds of exhaust smoke ( sorry Greta Thunberg ) was something to behold with more excitement to enjoy... 125 mph here we come although they would top 148 mph... Now there is food for thought but as I did not fancy tea and biscuits with the Boss well need I say more..
Used to catch the over nighter Intercity from Sheffield that run in the summer months down to Newquay and always looked forward to this section of the route along with going over the Tamar Bridge.
We used to leave Sheffield about midnight and get in Newquay about 07:30, the sun would just be rising around this section around Dawlish. Do HST’s still go down to Newquay as I ain’t been since 97 and can you get one from Sheffield direct there such as say a Glasgow to Newquay that stops at Sheffield or have you to change somewhere?
steven o'brien XC HST duties seized two years ago. GWR still do but as of next year they will soon be replaced with 80X series trains.
:( I once got the chance to start up the Newcastle bound HST in Newquay station one Saturday morning you can’t do that sort of thing these days:) I think there were roughly 5-6 HST services direct from the likes of. Edinburgh, Glasgow, Newcastle, Leeds and maybe even as far north as Aberdeen in the summer months in the early 90s
No they haven’t Steven. XC still run HSTs down to the South West.
This happened when I was on a 150/2 :)
Nice one!
What the hell are those ancient diesel units doing on your railroad?
How is an xc mainline train on the great western roite?
I wonder why the XC was not put in the loop at Dawlish Warren? Have never seen that done before. Good filming. 👍
Jules Hathaway it stopped at Dawlish Warren already plus there was another stopping train behind. It was because there were some late running trains and that too was late. Just a very busy period overall. An excellent use of the infrastructure.
IC125EG Ah I see. I agree with you, it was excellent thinking by control/signalling staff. Damn good railway practice to keep the job moving.
@@juleshathaway3894 Yes they are a good team at Exeter Panel. Using the Up line bi-di in this situation reduces overall delay more than holding the 'stopper' in Warren loop as both trains keep moving. On the flip-side though, it can be tricky to find long enough margins to do this move without delaying Up trains.
your welcome keep the vidios coming m8
The horn was saying see you alligator by HST GWR
Yep lol
Very good video
A nice surprise indeed!
Gotta love a HST nice horn lol
AlexTrainspotterHD indeed
Awesome
It would have been more usual to drop the XC in the loop as Wallish Darren and let the GW overtake there. Perhaps there was already a set looped at the Warren?
Al Catel there was already another train stood in Dawlish Warren loop, a stopper. The XC was running an hour late. You basically had four trains on the bounce with 3 that stopped and 2 at both Dawlish Warren and Dawlish. This was a great move.
Cor that Glasgow to paignton journey must take a lifetime
Graham 2sexy 0601 off Glasgow. Into Paignton at 1545.
From Canada:
I remember the disastrous washout Dawlish had some years bac from a horrific sea storm, and asked myslef: Why do they rebuild a railway lie so close to the sea? to me in is another disasrter waiting to happen! Now I see the rebuilt stretch of coastline (it looks vagiely familiar by way of what I remembered seeing of the disaster). Sure it is an important railaccess to what appears to be a lot of Western Englsand and likely Wales and Scotland also, but they could have rerouted all that via Exeter, away from the eternal menace of the sea, and had a spur to run south from there to serve Dawlish itself, couldn't they?
at what point does it cross back over to the down?
Al H Just after Teignmouth station.
Just brilliant,love the running cometary.Priceless. Well done.👍😂
Hellfire! and two years later these iconic beasts are being slowly withdrawn for the rancid 800/802s
andrew ganley don’t! I’m sobbing that they’ve already started running on Table 135 😢
Genuinely depressed about it I hate those new peices of plastic trash 😭
Sadly, the ic125 are not immortal and had to be replaced sometime
In another 40 years time, the new trains will be lamented
Just like the diesel hydraulics 35/42/52 were when the hst first entered service 40+ years ago, and when steam was replaced by diesel
I swear everyone on here has an agenda. “Rancid, nasty, plastic”. Makes me happy these are being replaced. No disrespect for a good fast clean train
What’s the speed track speed limit going through there?
Darren Kennedy 60 or 65 on the down and 40 on the up in the down direction I think 🤔
Explains why there's never any in my area, they're all hiding down here. :)
Very nice indeed.
Philip Page thanks
@@IC125EG I have subscribed to your channel, please have a quick look at mine.
Very very rare to see that
I never knew that Dawlish was two way on two tracks. You never see that stuff and it's spectacular when you do
The Pendolino 390 only the up or bi directional. But still a superb use of infrastructure. Just a long section. .
It was fun between Bristol T.M. and Bath Spa once. Due to an infrastructure failure, up direction trains were running on the down line and down direction trains were running on the up line!
It’s two way in the down direction from the footbridge at Dawlish Warren to Teignmouth station just past the platforms
Nice
Well!
very good video
MTW the Trainspotter thank you
2:03 We are all happy train lovers
I did not know that cross country class 43 goes down that way
Allan Pilgrim animations it's their core route for HSTs
Allan Pilgrim animations it goes down to Plymouth and Penzance and Paignton
Allan Pilgrim animations thats why its called cross country
Well, until the government chops up the cross country franchise into bits...
@@tristcm9633 an newquay in the summer
Is it only hst s there because ther is no electric wires
Lynsey Tully i only film HSTs there. But you get Voyagers, pacers and other 15X too.
Ah! Here we go again! Our good old nationwide diesel heritage railway system! 😂
What are you on about the Hosts are very efficient
I wonder why the XC wasn’t held at Dawlish Warren rather than run wrong line ?
richard brooks there was already another stopping train that was due in at Dawlish Warren. The XC was late.
IC125EG cheers that makes sense now
iMovie?
Train track Jack yes that’s right iMovie on Mac
Ah, the 2010s, back when there were lots of slam door hsts around
What station is this?
Dawlish
Is this line Bi-Directional?
Riley :3 As per the video description ....
Only the up line is Bi-directional
Shame you had a few bits missing from the vid
That screaming child at the end of the video. That was a bit weird I thought it was the train at first
@Jessica Clark he sounds like a HST carriage with flat wheel lol
@Jessica Clark lol
@Jessica Clark i don't think so haha
Can't believe people can get that close to a speeding train.
my favrot trains are on here 😀
Max F do u mean favourite
@@tristcm9633 he does
Oh wait I've got it one train passed another train that was sitting in the station ,well done mate no one's witnessed this phenomenon before, waalll.
Well my flannel is rock hard aftet drying following that watch
That XC hst was on the wrong track going south to Paignton so I hope it founded a set of points to go back on the correct track
Daniel Martin it’s a bi directional track so can be used for both directions should the need arise. The crossover starts at Dawlish Warren and ends just west of Teignmouth. It’s used I’d say at least once a day mainly during late running or if the sea is rough.
What's 5 9 mean?
ps36081 5 9? Where have heard/seen that?
@@IC125EG at about 1:28 when the train is pulling in
ps36081 oh you mean Bi-Di 😂
@@IC125EG oh!!! What does Bi Di mean?
ps36081 bi directional. Basically can be used both ways
A mic wind filter would be appreciated
On a phone isn’t….. not really going to be carrying a wind filter round whilst on my travels…. 🤦♂️
0:58 Hey
I know that guy
I just dont get it :(

look like the xc hst is facing the wrong way it should be turning towards Exeter st davids not newton abbot
Scott Whiley it was heading towards Newton Abbot on the up line instead if doen using the bi directional signalling to allow the GWR to overtake. That’s the design of the line here.
isn't it mate
Wheelflat @0:52
A little one
hst is the best train ever biult
This is a dirrrty video☝️😃👍
How
With the Trouble these Hitachis are causing better known as 'Shitachis' to some of my Pals I think we better just get some 2+8s on Standby.
Blimey...
A bit !at e but great video
nice vidio shame about the kid sceaming in the back
michael stewart downside of being by the seaside and the general public I guess. Thanks for comment.
Yes unfortunately the world doesn't stop for trainspotters to drool over the local stations services.
Trainspotter Porn!
I bet the driver of the FGW HST honked the horn just to say "FUK U MUDDA FUKA!" I can picture the driver of the XC HST with his middle finger up.
The Cornish Crusader just subscribed to your channel please subscribe back to mine
Hang on everything is supposed too stop at dawlish
no
only local stopping trains stop at dawlish the express trains ie to london paddington and scotland do not apart from the ocasional one or two
@@cookric555 Yeah Paddington and man picc trains stop from paignton about couple times a day
Do people realise they ruin the videos when they get good tone from the driver when they go “awwww”
Ben Spiers sadly can’t control the general public 😐 it’s a bit annoying.
80 DNA it’s annoying when the public can see you’re filming and taking photos and they don’t give a shit so they carry on walking and talking anyway. How would they like it if we did that in a family holiday photo, same principal!
