Spike Lee NEEDS to make that Jackie Robinson Film ; 50th anniversary of his death is next year ; and while Mrs . Robinson is still alive ... even if he must write a whole new script , Spike Lee can do it . Nobody else can bestow upon Jackie Robinson's story justice , glory , and dignity the way Spike Lee will . It doesn't matter if Denzel Washington is too old ; find a great talent who actually looks more like Jackie Robinson . Do the right thing and just do it .
Man, I don't even know what to say right now. When he started talking about Jackie Robinson I felt every single word that Spike was saying. If y'all ever get a chance to watch the movie 42 you need to. It's not a perfect Jackie Robinson movie but it's the best one that we've got right now and Chadwick Boseman did a great job. Another thing that I wanted to say is as a white man I will never ever be able to understand what African Americans go through/have gone through in this country/world. At the same time, I recognize the enormous responsibility that I have to make sure I raise my kids to respect and love everyone no matter what they look like. I can only hope for other white parents to do the same. In closing, I just wanna say that the only thing more legendary than Spike Lee is his powerful smile.
So much more dignified sitting down , having a conversation than that 73 Questions which makes you feel like you're getting the bum's rush out the door .
I love this guy so much; his honesty, his insight outlook, fearlessness. The list goes on and on. If I could just hang out and conversate with him. God bless 💝
Years ago I was working for a music manager and film producer. On this occasion, the music manager was escorting one of his clients to the Grammys. However, he had bad news that he had to tell Spike which was that the UK artist wasn't willing to use his music in a Spike Lee joint (or a Pepsi commercial or anything else). So everyone went to the awards show and I was left alone in an office to let Spike down gently. He was truly disappointed (and yes, he said, "Baby, baby, baby please!" but completely authentic and cool about it.
my expectations for Spike Lee are always high and the reflections were way beyond anything i could have hoped to see. Akira Kurosawa and Jackie Robinson - i really want to see THAT movie and thankfully he didn't make the commercial that the powers that be had in mind.
Spike Lee needs to make that Jackie Robinson film even if he has to rewrite the script . Do the right thing and just do it ... next year is the 50th anniversary of his death . Doesn't it matter if Denzel Washington is too old because there are plenty of talented people out there who actually look more like the legend . Would be a wonderful gift for Mrs. Robinson while she's still alive .
@@derriekt6584 I forgot about that , but , ( and I'm not being insensitive here , but Budd Schulberg died almost 11 years ago ) maybe it would be best to do the Jackie Robinson Film first while Mrs. Robinson is still here ... and afterwards still keep his promise to Budd Schulberg and get that finished . No doubt there are probably scores of people who would love to help Lee bring these two stories to fruition on film .
@@gardensofthegods He should've been the one to direct the James Brown movie as well, imo. Brian Grazer was the producer, I just don't get it. Chad was okay in the role (my opinion only), but I would've loved to see Spike's version and whether he'd have cast Chadwick or someone who could actually dance/move like the Godfather...
@@bOmBAsTiK It's been years since I saw that movie so honestly I can't remember what I thought of his dancing ... but I usually take issue when the actor really doesn't look anything like the person he is portraying and that was the case here . I thought it was a pretty good movie but yeah , it still would have been fascinating to see Spike Lee's version of James Brown's life .
I admire that he's so clear about who he is that he'll not answer questions. I'd be eager to please and answer them all, also cause I wanted to get an A on the test. The cool to say no.... very cool.
Man, Spike seems so passionate about the Jackie Robinson project. I hope he doesn't give up and makes something out of it still, whether it's a documentary, series, or something else great! You can still do it Spike!
Made me cry. I agree with Spike on everything here. Especially Agent Orange. His handling of this pandemic was, in hindsight, dangerous to everyone in the front lines of it.
The fact that Lee teared up while discussing Jackie Robinson did reveal his character, but maybe not in the empathetic and cool way he thinks. Robinson was paid very well to go out and play a game. He had a support system and he endured some malicious bigoted people on the way to making his fortune. Sadly, he died too young to enjoy the fruits of his "labor." But you know who had a hard time in front of Mccarthy's "Un-American committee" and who was betrayed by Mr Jackie? It was my hero: Paul Robeson. He died young too. His son believes he was poisoned by the CIA among other injustices (passport taken, whitelisted, impoverished, disenfranchised, abandoned...), it was the last insult to a man of enormous talent, intellect, humanity and a tremendous athlete who didn't ever become anyone's performing simian.
Questions aside, I know this much about Spike Lee for sure. - He has the greatest laugh! I start laughing every time I hear him laugh. It's a gift. 💞😇💞
I was born in 1972. While Casablanca is my favorite movie, 25th Hour is my favorite movie made during my lifetime. It's not too late to make the Jackie Robinson movie, Spike. Albeit with a lead other than Denzel. Quality transparency here. Cheers, mate.
Thank you Spike for your vulnerability, and your candor as always. I might just have to go watch Do The Right Thing again. I’m sporting my radio raheem tee today, and feeling the power of love over hate is strong xx peace ☮️
Yes, the poignant Proustain questions prosed to prolific filmmaker & director Spike Lee did indeed reveal elements of his true nature. However, Spike left it up to the audience to decide the question, those who watch. The question of whether or not they reveled his true nature unto himself is unlikely, as it would appear he is in full alignment with his true nature, living in complete truth, authenticity, and integrity. Goddess Bless Spike. Thank you for recognizing & honoring Herstory. xo
To the second biggest racist on planet earth towards the white man, I'd like to say thank you. I forgive you as a white man trying his best to survive this nightmare we all struggle with. I'm just like you; surviving, hoping this world will help me be better and live better. I'm sorry I'm not a better person.
I ALWAYS thought his actual name was Spike. Took me forever too look it up, that his real name is Shelton. Wierd he would choose to ditch it and use a name like Spike. Thanx for the interview though.

@Corpsefoot Gaming he is a public figure. Why should he say something that might compromise him?
Vanity fair is just unleashing a barrage of proust questionnaire videos on us... and I like it
So much more dignified sitting down , having a conversation than that 73 Questions which makes you feel like you're getting the bum's rush out the door .
So apparently Spike Lee is going to live until he's a hundred and fifty years old waiting for the Knicks to win the championship before he passes.
😂😂😂😂
Shots fired! Shots fired! LOL!!!
When Spike talks about Jackie, he is bringing tears to my eyes, too. Powerful.
Dang man, the segment about Jackie Robinson....
Powerful.
Most powerful, underrated filmmaker of all time? This man right here. Spike Lee, you are an inspiration.
He's been mine for 30 yrs
The Jackie Robinson segment was beautiful. Thanks to Spike for sharing
Protect Spike Lee at all costs

So many people would love to sing, it’s a lovely thing to have an instrument within you.
Why every time I look at Spike Lee's eyes is like he's about to go to sleep for a long time and never wanna wake up

Reminds me of Hitch every time I see it, for some reason.
I love "pigeon-toed" Spike Lee. One of my FAVORite filmmakers. School Daze changed my life!
love that response to the question "is NYC dead?"

Paul Robeson paved the way for Jackie Robinson. In 1943, Robedon lead a delegation in talks with baseball honchos asking them to integrate baseball.

Tishiro Mifune, Throne of Blood, nice!

Not watching Django should have been on the list.
His worst regret are all the pics where he hugs Donald Trumps.
My concern with black men is that they want they’re own films. However. I believe that it’s better if they appear on the white film as like Extras.
somebody tell him to turn the 2k15,2k16,2k17 servers on plz💯
