King of Rock was the first rap cassette I ever owned. Loved that gritty rock sound in early rap. Thank you Eddie, for sharing your masterful guitar parts
In addition to being a legend, Eddie has a steel trap memory. Dude even remembers where he bought his shoes 40 years ago. I can't even remember what i had for dinner yesterday!
OMG what an incredible interview with this God of guitar! Such a monster player and he seems so humble a down to earth. What en epic career he had and what a refreshing interview of his journey. You outdid yourself on this one Mason!
John, It was always the best hang going upstairs at Rudy’s to hang with you all those years ago. Seeing all the amazing builds, mods you we’re working on and playing some of those guitars was the best. Thank you!
Thanks for spotlighting the work of this unsung legend of the recording industry. Eddie has contributed to some of the best records ever comitted to tape yet is so incredibly humble. Amazing.
My love and respect to Eddie Martinez. To be honest, i did not know much about him and his work until now when i watched this video. This was very informative and a pleasure hearing Eddie talk about his experiences recording guitar with Robert Palmer and Run DMC. Thanks Mason for this video, cheers!
Great episode, Eddie is a complete pioneer of incorporating such diverse styles of playing both from a rhythm and lead perspective. A complete gentleman and brilliant speaker.
What a guy, what a career and what a memory. This is awesome to hear from the man himself. Especially love the nice things he says about Robert Palmer. Riptide got constant play on my turntable for a long time and then came Heavy Nova. True class act just like Robert Palmer. Rock on Eddie.
You hear about all of the magic that was happening in NYC through the 80's over and over. It's really fascinating to me how it all comes together in situations like these. To be young, of age, and talented in that place and time just seems like absolute magic.
Hey Mason, thanks for having Eddie on your channel and also thanks for all the other session players you’re hosting. Ever since I started playing in the early 80s, I’ve been attracted to the use of guitar in pop music, especially music of that era where the guitar wasn’t the main focus and the songs were not necessarily riff-based. The players were allowed to experiment with textures, sounds and all sorts of really neat parts that lifted the song and didn’t scream for the spotlight. Eddie’s playing is a good example of this.
Wow! Just Wow! These tracks were a huge part of my childhood. I never realized how much these songs mean to me. Guy's like Eddie Martinez have so much still to give to the world. What a gentleman!
I loved this interview!! So cool to see the gear used and the stories behind the music. You never see this kind of thing done for the session players that are behind the iconic songs we love from the past.
I still check out those old Hamer's on Reverb because of those Run DMC songs. haven't bought one, but such a cool guitar - mainly because of Eddie Martinez.
Such an epic interview! Eddie has got to be one of the sweetest Souls on the planet. So humble. He deserves all of the accolades for sure. Great questions from the interviewer, and to be able to get to see Eddie play these parts and recreate them is priceless. Thank you both. 🙏
Thank you so much for doing this interview! I could have listened to Mr. Martinez speak for hours. Not many people have such a razor sharp memory as he does. What an articulate gentleman. You should line him up for another episode, the next time hes in L.A.
Hi Mason, don’t know if you’ll ever read this but your channel has filled a void in my musical life that I wasn’t really aware of. Growing up in the eighties, being an aspiring guitarist (like so many 😅) I read all those inner sleeves back to front to see who were the session guys. Learned to recognize lots of them but never really knew what I’m finding out now through your channel. Your interviews are pure gold and put a huge smile on my face. It’s like finally solving the cold cases 40 years later. Including all the pedal talk! Thanks so much dude.
I understand these session folks are “hired guns”, but they should get writing credit for what they provide. After all, they are writing hooks that make these songs as recognizable as the vocals or anything else. The unique riff he plays on “Simply Irresistible “ is incredible.
What a nice guy. Having watched this now, I can see why he has worked with such a great mix of artists. Eddie, along with Rick Nielson and Steve Stevens got me hooked on Hamer guitars that I still own and play exclusively. They are just wonderfully made instruments that have lasted a lifetime.
I almost bought a Steve Sevens prototype back in like ‘85, ended up with the TL in ‘86, much later (2014) I came across a mint FM special for $600 , love those guitars! I didn’t know Eddie was playing them.
I had a Made in USA Diablo in Cherry translucent...let my then girlfriend talk me into pawning it and could never go back and get it. That was 2003..what a drag because the prices for them now has gone way up.
