      Three sounds like junk yard parts ---what a trooper to stick it out but when you need a gauge you need a gauge. Glad I could help God bless.

    Thanks, I have the same problem on my K5 after removing the cluster to install white gauges and paint my needles. The temperature gauge was working fine prior to removing it but when i put back together i had this very same issue. Will order a new temp gauge from LMC today.

    I'm looking to "upgrade" my 1987 Custom Deluxe idiot light instrument cluster to a Silverado cluster like yours.
    I've been told I simply need to change out the sensors (switches) at the block and the oil and temp gauges will work.
    I've found my oil pressure sensor. But I'm not sure where the water sensor is?
    I have the switch in the driver's head, but also have a sensor of some sort adjacent to the thermostat housing in the intake manifold. Is that what I need to change out to make the factory gauge work?

    I got an 86 k20, and the guage never worked. Checked the sensor and it was unplugged. Found the plug for it and clipped it on and still nothing. Only had truck running maybe 10 minutes and never rased up at all.

      Wire from switch could be broken somewhere but first follow procedures at end of video how to do resistance check on switch left side of engine drivers side shown on video.If switch is good check switch wire may be broken //scroll to page 6 67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/showthread.php?t=442311 //// if this does not work you need to check gauge -works for me

    I have an 87’ R10, But the engine is probably a 78’ 350 Small Block. Anyways, my temperature gauge stays stuck at 0 24/7. Just wanna prevent another Blown head gasket if he overheats again.

      Follow the steps in the video--- works for me--- or just go get an aftermarket temp gauge if do not trust GM's finest offerings to the table //// . they sell a three gauge set at Harbor Freight for Around twenty dollars ---a friend of mine has had the HF gauge set for 9 months no problems and we are talking bottom of the barrel cheap gauges and it ---works for him. (the link for that ) www.harborfreight.com/electronic-triple-auto-gauge-set-41017.html Hope I helped God bless and God bless America.

    I think you may have just proved that the gauge was good and the resistor was (open) no good. Before anyone replaces their gauge, you need to check the resistance between the two pins with an ohmmeter. Usually GM gauges are 90ohms But I think the temp gauges are less then 90. If you have a very large (open) resistance that is the problem. The resistors are hard to come by and I dont know the wattage rating, but you may be able to find one on a less attractive gauge that you might swap in...

      Nope - the gauge was bad - Works for me God bless

    i have a question with my vehicle running cold in the winter - instead of getting a new thermostat is it safe to cover part of the rad up with a bag and just keep an eye on the guage cause without the bag it will warm up to a couple notches below the quarter mark but if I drive on the highway for long it will go all the way down - since I covered part of the rad with a bag it stays at a quarter now I think it's okay I'll just have to take it out when it starts warming up

      Covering the grill on any vehicle is self taught and different with every vehicle. WATCH that gage because engine damage can occur with covering the vehicle grill and not unzipping it at the proper time. Best is talk to your seasoned and area related auto technician or parts shop for best answers and results. Good luck my friend.

    I have a 1986 gmc jimmy ..they swapped engine for a 350...wire was unhooked..single wire ...I hooked it up ..it pegged out ...replaced temp sensor on drivers side ..same thing ..did they sell me an idiot light sensor? Or do I need to start testing other stuff

    • @MBJREPORT

    Just to verify, my temp sensor wire is disconnected from my temp sensor and when you turn the key the temp gauge maxes over 260 degrees. Are you stating that the gauge is bad? Temp sensor and temp switch are those two different sending units or is that just the one sensor on the cylinder head. Reason for so many questions cause I swapped original small block for a big block that I built to replace it and had to swap all original sensors for new ones.

    • @MBJREPORT
      @MBJREPORT  5 років тому

      temp switch which feeds temp gauge signal in resistance form is on driver side of engine block on the video.
      temp sensor is on top of block front towards water pump connection that sends information to ECM.

      Thank you for the quick response, I decided to go a different route and install temp and oil pressure gauges from auto meter with all new wires instead. The engine I built is making over 5 times the hp then the original 305 sbc and would not be logical to trust stock gauges. Thank you for the helpful video.

      Temp switch is located on driver side engine block for analog gauge.
      Temp sensor is on top forward part of intake manifold that sends info to ecm only not for gauge. Temp switch looks like this for 305/350 www.summitracing.com/parts/ado-g1852?seid=srese1&cm_mmc=pla-google-_-shopping-_-srese1-_-acdelco&gclid=CjwKCAiA45njBRBwEiwASnZT53UgpcOOWnd1Q46_lfakxImj6z2Zu83y0bcjN6vLyb-cRRgSxZz3zhoCEt0QAvD_BwE

    I have a 1985 C20 with the 305. The coolant temp gauge is pegged in the high position with the truck on and off. I have replaced the gauge itself and the sending unit in the motor but the new gauge still is stuck in the hot position. Any suggestions? Thanks

    • @MBJREPORT
      @MBJREPORT  6 років тому

      All temp gauges should start cold and rise as engine temp increases. 1. Check voltage at wire going to switch on engine block should be 12 volts dc some as low as 6 volts also any thing below that bad feed (always check a manual like chilton wiring in the back of the book to give the feed for your model). 2. If that is good take resistance check on switch it self with one lead on switch and the other on a good ground take reading on cold engine and hot engine readings should vary ...if not switch is bad... if it does vary resistance then the gauge is at the beginning of going wacky after all these checks . Good luck.

    • @MBJREPORT

      If you are talking about the coolant temp sensor it is a pigtail connected to the sensor by the top radiator hose forward of the TBI colored yellow and black wire(s)this feeds your ECM info.
      If you are talking about the temperature switch left side (driver side ) of the engine block it is dark green like the video this wire feeds the temp gauge.
