Flashback to Guitar Player Magazine November 1982, Randy Rhoads, Zappa, Lenny Breau & Finger-Tapping

- Buying my first issue of the wonderful @GuitarPlayerEditors publication at the age of 13 opened my eyes, ears and mind to a whole new world that had been shrouded in mystery in my little corner of pre-internet planet Earth!
I learnt about the Ibanez TS9 Tube Screamer, Odd Time Signatures & Nested Tuplets, Double-Tracking guitar solos, and the Diminished Scale.
I was introduced to Mike Stern, Larry Coryell, Lenny Breau, and some unbelievable transcriber named Steve Vai.
I was even forced to learn to read music notation because there were no Tabs therein!
But, most importantly for me at the time - it taught me how to achieve the holy grail that was Right Hand Tapping!
This video includes a performance of Randy Rhoads' stunning lead break from Ozzy Osbourne's Flying High Again, from his Nov '81 release Diary of a Madman.
It also includes some embarrassing footage of me trying to play what seems a fairly straightforward Lenny Breau exercise...
I have that magazine. Probably the longest interview of Randy in it he talks about everything
I read and reread that article. It's a wonder the print hasn't come off!
Ha, what a great vid, some great yarns there. At one point, I must have collected a hundred GP magazines (or equivalents), but with a growing family, space constraints, the time came where I had to get rid of them, at least most of them, I kept 7 or 8 that I though were just too good to part with, but trashed the rest. One thing you made me think about: yeh, there was always stuff on there that I was never going to play, and didn't bother with, but you wake up one day, and you realise: I can understand and play most of the stuff in the magazine! It's an amazing moment in your life.
That's a great point! And a great way to achieve some much needed perspective regarding our own playing.

Great stuff I started in late 87, and ended up teaching in 91 until now on and off. But the classic was going too a shop called Allen's music store and buying back in black ......but holy smoke it was written in bass clef and treble just for piano ouccch so it was time too watch rage and develop that ear
I also have THAT book - sitting right here next to my desk. Hahaha! Amazing isn't it, that the publishers thought the best way to transcribe AC/DC would be that format!
I used to grab my older brothers copies of guitar player and also guitar world and I still have them, Steve vai basically invented a lot of the guitar tab notation symbols

It was my only monthly sub since 1979 and was everything back then, I used to hunt for back issues playing music out on the road. I can relate big time!

Wow, we must be about the same age. I still have this edition of GP along with a few other gems. By the way, I have an old Van Halen magazine with a tribute to Van Halen and eruption and Spanish Fly are transcribed by Steve Vai.

@@dannyeddyguitar I walked into random store that sold rocks and beads and some guy had boxes full of the magazine 80’s and early 90’s ones. I don’t think he knows what he has selling them for 50 cents each! I’m 23 and I’ve learned more out of these magazines than anything else! Very cool

Still got that same issue. A great guitar teacher (JC) told me comsidered tab for illiterate people lol.
Try those bloody Lenny Breau things. I'm hopeless if I have to rely on syncopation between my 2nd and 3rd fingers!
