One Rifle Cartridge To Rule Them All!

- If you had no rifles to hunt with a you needed one to hunt all over the world what would you pick. You can only have one. This would be excluding small game like squirrels, and dangerous game like grizzly bears. It would need to be able to take furbearers to moose and eland. I will widdle it down to just one cartridge to rule them all.

I totally agree with your choice. It kills me that manufacturers didn't jump on the bandwagon. The only reason I like it is recoil. It gives you the possibility to shoot it more comfortably than the other two in a lighter rifle. It's the trajectory, accuracy, energy on target balanced with recoil. Best effective range for your "recoil" dollar. Good choice with the big "will it survive" caveat. It just gives you the best chance to place the bullet accurately on target of your final 3 cartridges. One small factor you didn't discuss is the possibility of using long for weight monolithic bullets the 300 WSM would struggle with because it doesn't have the latest chamber design. The 6.8 Western is right on the tail of the 7mmPRC in trajectory and delivered energy and will do anything the 7mmPRC can do with less recoil. It is the one rifle cartridge to rule them all hands down.
I appreciate your comment, and for watching!
Oh my! 6.8 western? The one to do it all in my opinion would be the 3006. 125 grain varmint to 220 grain round nose. If you run 150s thru your 270 wsm I’d take it over that 6.8 western all day, ammo availability is a lot better I would think.
I appreciate you watching and commenting Tom!
30-06Sprinfield. The "one cartridge". It takes Eland in Africa, Moose and Deer, Varmints...who needs super-fast cartridges that destroy meat?
Can’t go wrong with the 30-06
30-06 ruins a lot of meat from what ive seen
That's an easy answer. 30-06 ! Not the best at any one thing but the best all round. I did not start shooting and reloading the 30-06 until age 50. I've been reloading, target shooting, and deer hunting since age 11 . Started with a 30 carbine and 22-250. I can't begin to count the rifles I reloaded for . Even a much higher number of rifles I sight in for people. I went to the 30-06 to simplify my life. Tell me what the 30-06 can't do . That may be the easier question.
The 30-06 can do anything you need it to
😃 Amen! 🙏 And, since so many of us "Old Timers" are willing to say that and the cartridge has been around this long, then their must have to be "some merit" to it? Right??? 😂
The more guns I own and reload for the more I appreciate my 30-06. Especially if I’m hunting out to 600 yards it hangs with them all. My 7 prc is a little better at range steel and I’m talking my 338 win in bear country. But the 30-06 is super solid and has been over shadowed by all these “new cartridges” but the 30-06 is a great cartridge that is now under appreciated. I’ve always wondered why the army went to the 308 for a sniper round when the 30-06 is much more capable w manageable recoil.
🕵️♂️ The Answer is because most "fire fights" happen at 300 yards or less! 🔥
@@ronlowney4700 long range sniping ain’t no firefight. If the were worried about a fire fight that would put the 308 in an automatic platform. Which they didn’t.
Pre and post pandemic I'm glad I went 270win, 308win, and 30-06 with enough components for field use. My 45-70 is great because I have the capability to cast my own bullets to keep it running for less.
You can’t go wrong with those cartridges
I’m team “it works!” I have an old school -06 where I applied the “new school” powders and bullet design. With my comfort and the combination I have, it is an 800 yard rifle for hunting. I can still take it out to the longer ranges and do the new long range things. I just wish I had a muzzle break on that rifle. Add to finishing the video. I am building a 6.8 western. It has the recoil of an -06 and very similar trajectory to my 300 prc. It is almost a sleeper cartridge for how good it is.
Good comment, and a great team to be on!
.375H&H
I own 6.5 prc, 270 win, 7 rem mag, 7 prc, 30-06, 338 win mag. Love them all 6.8 Western great cartridge but I can load my 270 win to almost compete. 7 prc is the easy button for factory ammo and reloading. 6.8 western is pretty much dead. It’s a great cartridge on paper. You did a nice job on your final 3.
Thanks I appreciate it. I’ve got my fingers crossed that the 6.8 Western sticks around. I don’t feel confident
*Unspoken rule: if a person likes to shoot large quantities at a high frequency, they need to shoot what the military shoots.* This is why, traditionally, there hasn't been a proliferation of 270/6.8 cal bullets in my opinion. However, 6.8 cal is now a military bullet. So, I believe the quantity of different bullet types, quantity of differing bullet weights, quantity of ammunition and quality of factory loaded ammunition will be there in the near future.
It will be a game changer when Federal makes SMK/Berger Gold Medal Match ammo for 6.8x51/277 Sig Fury. I think the DOD is building a stand alone factory at the Lake City complex to produce 6.8x51/277 Sig Fury, so it's going to happen soon. Additionally, this is when we'll start to see a decline in 30 cal and 223/5.56 bullet offerings....just my opinion.
An interesting item I wanted to share related to the above: I purchased a box of 6.5PRC loaded with 153gr Berger EOL bullets from an online retailer. It carried an ITAR tag meaning the DOD is using this in some capacity.
Really interesting, thanks!
My choice if I could only have one 30-06. It’s not long range competition king but hunting is what puts food on the table. It’s a happy medium and able to take large game and perfectly fine for smaller stuff if you reload you can make it work. And it doesn’t kill you with recoil like the magnum stuff.
The 30-06 could, and has, definitely do it.
7mm PRC has a 1:8 twist rate and ballistically it beats the 6.8 western at every yardage. Most shooters and hunters think the 7mm is the perfect middle ground caliber.
I don’t disagree. It was so close I had to just go with my nitpicky favorite attributes of the 6.8.
7 PRC has by all accounts had significantly lower fps than label claim. See the backfire video on this.
Funny how versatility was a huge factory when a 7 PRC has no versatility. You can shoot light bullets. Twist rate would potentially blow the bullets apart. Secondly free bore was built for hornady bullets basically 3 of them. Free bore is so long it eliminates the use of all the Berger bullets except 195 which is about 2850 in the PRC at best. And all light short bullets would have to jump a mile in that free bore. 8.5 twist 7 mag can go from 130 gn all the way to 195 no issues.
I agree with you about personal preference. I have no experience in said cartridges but I've read up on such in Nosler's 6th edition regarding the 6.8's.
I've had to defend my smokehouse from a 11' Brown Bear refusing to retreat. I went on top of my smokehouse when it started bust my wall. I took steady aim and dropped it with my WinM70 270. The 160 Nosler Partition is a freight train👍
I think id choose my Rem700 in 30'06, its easier to develop loads for, also the 180 Nosler is my top choice for any North American Big game especially Bull Moose👍👍
Awesome comment! Great story! Thanks
Out of your top 5 id say the 300 wsm but my overall favorite is the 30-06 hands down
Very logical, and I can’t fault you at all for that opinion
the one cartridge that rules them all is the one that works for you
Absolutely
Interesting. But, hunting is the topic. Out to 500 yards. Which is a long way for bullet performance. I also favor frontal area. The 6.8 is too small. The 7 is better, but as I might choose the 7PRC, it has some hype. 3000fps? The 30 cal is in the sweet spot, but the 300 WSM seems to be on its way out. The 30-06 is good, but in my opinion the 300 Win Mag rules. 150 grain for deer size, 200 grain for moose, or 165 grain for everything! If your 300 Win shoots Hornady Superformance 165 CX... what a great do lots 1 bullet/cartridge combo. The way I see it, more frontal area, reasonable recoil, tons of ammo availability. 300 Win my pick. My second pick is 7 Rem Mag. Possibly 7 PRC. But in all my hunting experience 30 cal and up... like 338 kill more humanely. 7mm not so. Every elk shot with my 338 Win was 1 and done. 7mm on elk... avg 3 well placed shots! I know there are many variables, but I'm building my go-to 1 gun with a shorter barrel, lightweight and have been struggling with cartridge choice. For thumping bear or elk in long cuts, my 300 RUM. For bigger critters in black timber, or things with big teeth/claws, my 375 Ruger. Both DIY builds. For my go-to build???? Im wrestling with 7PRC or 300Win Mag. The 7 a bit smaller than I prefer for elk and moose, the 300 bigger than needed for deer size. I subscribe to use more than enough gun and why I suspect the 300Win will be the carbon barrel I order.😊
I appreciate the well thought out comment!
Totally agree. Same as you I have a 270 WSM and love it as the perfect balance in the middle. I also have a 7mm STW which performs on a higher level again but find with modern bullets it's not really needed and keep going back to the 270 WSM. The 6.8 Western adds a bit more flexibility to the equation so your right on the money as far as l am concerned.
I appreciate that! Thanks for watching!
There is a little light left men and gals! Christensen is making rifles in 6.8 western and ADG stated during shot show they will start producing 6.8 Western brass this year! :)~
Cool, good news!
The 3006 is King it is the most versatile.
Thanks for watching
Ive always been a 30-30 type of guy but have been slowly moving into other calibers i now have an 06 and plan on getting more thanks for the helpful information.v
Your very welcome
I loved this. Man do I wish you could do a deep dive into the 35's, 9.3's, 375's and 416's....Im honestly supprised the 35's didnt make the list with their ability to be loaded with pistol bullets. The weight range us probably more than anything else on the list.
I appreciate the comment! There’s definitely some interesting 35’s.
Had to do some research on the 6.8and found that is ballistically the same as 7mm Rem Mag. 165 grain bullet at 2950 fps/3100 foot pounds of energy has killed many elk, moose and grizzly bear here in Montana. Not my first choice big bear in Alaska but could do the job. It is the best choice in your top 3 for taking fur bearing critters without damaging pelts. To bad about the availability issue. I think the 7prc will take the crown because of better bullet selection and a wider variety of rifles chambered for it. Also, I'm not going to trade my 30/06 for any of the above. It does the job. I prefer a 2 gun solution anyway.
Great comment! I agree I wouldn’t want to be stuck with one cartridge
6.8 western- Fully agreed with you. Notice most of the presenter would have chosen 7mm prc just because Hornady pay them in a way or other.
For me if I need to live with 2 Caliber i will go with 9.3x62 and 6.8 western.
If just 1 i will go with my browning x bolt pro in 6.8 western.
I never knew about Model 70 till that time , if today I get chance i will go with it in 6.8 western with MB model.
Or Huskvarna M98 in 9.3X64 fully upgrade with MB , glass bed, And 2.5x10 FPP scope
I got - 223, 6.5 cm , 270 , 280 AI , 30-06 , 300 WSM , 6.8 western, 9.3x62 , 7.62x39
Also own in past 300 wm , 7mm rem.mag, 30-30 .
In rifle from Savage 110, Mauser, Hasqvarna , Weatherby Mark V, Browning AB3, X bolt pro, Browning Bar, SKS , tikka t3x
If anyone starting scratch just buy 6.8 in Control feed (Model 70)p
Seems like you have good taste in cartridges and firearms
I appreciate the comment!
06 from war to varmints to elephant it works history tells the story
No doubt
I am a 300WSM enjoyer. It’s never left me wanting. Hopefully the royalties lawsuit doesn’t kill it. Brass is getting harder to find
It’s a top tier cartridge for sure
The Norma brass is nice. Hope you still have both your kidneys though. If you sell an arm and a leg you’ll be limited to a tree stand and won’t need the wsm 😂
That makes sense to me. I’d still pick 284 win but, I will say my go to is my old 1992 model rem 700 cdl 25-06. I like the 110 eld with h4831sc. Works well. That gun shoots really well so I can’t bring myself to rebarrel. It’s super light not something you want to get behind and shoot all day but it’s an excellent hunting rifle for sure. Imo any of those cartridges in the top 32 would be fine. My main factor would be brass availability. The two guns I shoot most now days are 6 arc and 284 so for me I have to buy 6.5 Grendel brass and 6.5-284 brass and resize to even get going but I am ok with that. Some will not be. I think the east button for someone not wanting a 30 cal right now is 7 prc. Thanks have a nice day.
Thank you for the comment, have a nice day!
There isn't one
Im a carpenter if one tool whoud do i wouldn't pull a 16' trailer.
223
243 win
280 or 30/06
338/06
I’m the same way, but this was a fun thing to think about and make a video about
Enjoyed video. As much as I like the 6.5 PRC, I think it’s a stretch for bigger game. It does hold fps and energy very efficiently. I really like the 6.8 Western but I think there is a possibility it will remain on life support due to the lack of marketing and support. .280AI followed by 7-08 paired with Browning and Nosler are my choices. I’m a loyal hunter/shooter/loader and have shot different cartridges and bullets over the last 40 years but Browning rifles and Nosler bullets have been excellent for me. Thanks again
Can’t go wrong with your choices. Thanks for watching!
Great video. I like the choice and was going to get one and still might. Yea the problem is you can’t get it in many rifles and the amo is just not there. Someday it will be popular enough I hope as the 6.8 western is just a awesome hunting round. But the 3006 and 7mm do the job no doubt as well
I agree with everything you said.
I can agree with this. I also have a 270 WSM and .270 Win, that I like a lot. I used to swear I’d never own a .270 Win, but the wife won one and then I bought a second one at a great price. I’ve had the WSM a lot longer that the .270 Win, and want to add a 6.8 Western. Sure I could rebarrel my WSM to 1:8 twist and probably be better off, but my .270 WSM performs well with 140 gr bullets. I also want the ability to shoot heavier grain bullets, which the 6.8 Western allows. I do hope the 6.8 Western survives, but I think it’s already fading fast. With Hornady refusing to make anything 6.8 Western related, it’s not helping. Of course now with Browning being out 1:8 twist .270 Win’s, that May finish off the .270 WSM and the 6.8 Western.
If you rebarrel it, can you go to 6.8Western easily?
Unfortunately you might be right, but I’m holding out hope
@Hudge76 - I’m actually hoping that the .270 fast twist barrel will save the 6.8 Western. There are so many .270 lovers out there that, if that fast twist catches on, manufacturers will follow suit with more heavy .277cal projectiles that can be used in reloading 6.8 Western.
I think you have to buy your top choice.... plus there really isn't that much content on the 6.8 Western
#savethe6.8western
I would like to… but $
@@hopefulballistics Get rid of your 270 WSM and get a 6.8 lol

Agree with your choice. 6.8 western is awesome! Wish more companies made heavier and higher bc bullets for it, understand why Hornady is mad, but get over it, sell more bullets! yes I reload for 6.8 spc and 270 win and others so I’m fortunate to be able to experiment.
Thanks for watching!
🤣 6.8 Western??? 🤯 I didn't see that comming! 🤕 There is No "Perfect Cartridge" and you know that I am a "Big 270 Winchester Fan"! However, when you look at "Versatility", the 30 Caliber is Still King! 🤴 But, then you put in the "Caveat" that it doesn't include Dangerous Game (how realistic that is would be another discussion that might possible change the outcome - as I would rather wreck a little more meat than die), then the 30-06 (not the 270 Winchester, as most people would have concluded) would have to be my Top Choice for Hunting Throughout the World Then (Using that "Caveat")! 😃 However, the 30-06 doesn't have the maximum SAMMI pressure rating, so one could argue that point as far as getting the most out of your cartridge (and this is a valid point and Why I prefer the 270 Winchester for my "Current Hunting Needs")! Another "Important Point" to add too is that the barrel twist rate for the 0.308 bullet will handle a wider range of bullet weights than these other calibers that were considered! And, then you have the other important consideration of Barrel Life, which is something that few people like to discuss! And, then you have to consider what recoil that most people can handle too and how far you intend to shoot! Then you have bullet, ammunition, and rifle availability and associated costs! And, to settle the argument for me is how well the bullet cycles through the action, which is something that ALL of these "Old Wartime Cartridges" Have and the "Modern Cartridges" Don't - Which Is Personally Very Important To Me (and would be Even More So, If You Included Dangerous Game and Your Life is On The Line)! And, then their is that ugly belt that neither you nor I like! And, while I know that more heavy 270 bullets are comming - along with the new faster twist rifle barrels - we still aren't quite their yet! So, at this point, I would still have to say that "Grand Old Cartridge" - the "All American" 30-06 is still #1 for a "Do it All Cartridge, Around the World" (Not Just North America, Where I Still Do Prefer the 270 Winchester)! 🗽 You may remember that we had this conversation before? About the 30-06, 270, 308, 7mm-08, and the 300 wsm! Well, that list would have to change a bit, as we were discussing well designed cartridges (excluding performance as the main factor), but the #1 choice remains the same for me at this time! The 30-06 is just so hard to beat for hunting and you can't go wrong if you have one to do so! 🤷♂️ You will most certainly be able to find a load that your gun likes, long before you burn out the barrel! And, that is something you just can't say about most of your Magnum cartridges! I still say, for most of your hunting needs and since we are excluding Dangerous Game here, then N.M.N. (No Magnum is "Necessary")!!! 😜
Great comment Ron, and I would have no trouble with the 30-06 being number 1. If I did have a dangerous game cartridge/rifle. I would have talk more about reliable cycling of the bolt. Something like a model 70 in a 338 win mag, 375 H&H would have been more up to par.
You missed one aspect of the 06 that most seem to ignore. Magazine capacity. Everyone touts cartridges like the 6.5 prc, 6.8 western, 300 wsm, 7mm prc, etc, but if I am wandering around kodiak island looking for game, a 30-06, properly loaded, with 5 rounds in the magazine, would make me feel better than a 7mm rem mag with 3 rounds in the magazine. And I own, enjoy, and hunt with multiple single shot rifles. There is just something very comforting about knowing you have 5 available rounds in the magazine instead of 3. If you do your job, one is all you need, but 5 in ready reserve is very comforting. Better to have them and not need them, than to need them and not have them.
@@fedup3582 I hear you on that
😁 I Totally Agree! And, especially in Bear country! Here in Montana, we had 2 more bear attacks this week and one more fatility! Also, I keep shooting the elk, until they are on the ground and Not Moving (So, You Know I Will, More So, With Any Grizzly Bear)! 🐻 Also, here in Montana - until recently - we had deer and antelope areas with either unlimited over the counter tags or up to 5 animals were allowed! Which meant, that I could take out a small herd to fill my freezer in just one encounter of a decent sized herd! When it comes to Magazine Capacity, More is Always Better! 🤑
🤠 Tbe 30-06 is "One Hell of a Fine Cartridge", for sure! 🔥
6.5 prc hands down. I did the stats on all of them and compared them.
25 Creedmoor
For recoil level plus magazine capacity, I would put the 280 AI over your choices. But I read that the 40 degree shoulder of the case makes manufacturing tougher and more expensive, so apparently this might be why the 280 AI remains expensive and harder to find. So, I guess it would be pretty hard to beat the 30-06. As much as I like playing with all the different cartridges and exploring all the "new ideas", my model 70 in 30-06 will always be here.
280 AI and/or 30-06 are great choices
Out of them 3 I would pick 300wsm. My favorite is the 270 win. Now i have 300wsm and 270wsm but the price of ammo and availability 270 win is the way to go and is a great cartridge .
Good choices
It looks good so it wyins
…. It does look good, lol
It is sad the 6.8 Western came out during Covid. It lost its momentum and now has no shot at getting factory support from other major rifle makers. It will end up a Winchester Browning only cartridge imho.
I will keep my 270 and my 280AI.
Nothing wrong with the 270 and the 280AI. They’re are proven
I’m curious why the 7SAUM was left off the Sweet 16? I don’t own one but I always consider it right up there with the best of the best in terms of versatility and efficiency. I shoot and love my “one gun” mountain-weight rifle in 300wsm. I can do everything with it. I want to build a 6.8 Western, for all the reasons you mentioned, and more, to give to my son when he turns 16. He is about to turn 12, so I will build it, use it for a few years and then give him “one of dad’s guns” that he can use for a lifetime. We reload and I can even make 6.8 Western cases from my 300wsm cases if need be in the future.
It’s been a minute since I made this video, I can’t recall specifically what I was thinking with the sweet sixteen. I will say the 7 SAUM is a very nice cartridge and deserved better notoriety.
25 is 1:7.5 or 1:7 for the 135gn bullets 8 is to slow
22 GT pushing 90 grainers at 3100+ mv for the win. Aside from that the 30-30 is the ultimate winner
Well I appreciate the enthusiasm for your cartridges
@@hopefulballistics I have just grown so tired of lightweight rifles with heavy recoiling cartridges. :) The 30-30 is a shoulder killer also, but what can I say, it's the 30-30. :) Hehehe.... It's probably taken more game in the US than any other cartridge.
@@Rico11b the 30-30 is a proven deer slaying machine
Since you are including animals at least as big as bull elk, my vote is the 300 Win Mag for its horse power and reach for long shots across canyons, etc. I would pick the 300 Weatherby but I don’t shoot the cartridge well unless the rifle has a muzzle break and I’m not a fan of muzzle breaks since I’ve already lost some of my hearing.
Lots of others have went with the 300 Win Mag for there overall hunting cartridge. It’s definitely a good choice
I purchased a Fierce Carbon Rival FP in 6.8 Western. It has a twist rate of 1:7.5. I love the rifle, but am greatly concerned about the future of ammo availability. I wish Norma, Federal, Remington would load for this caliber. Hornady will not load for it and say they never will. Winchester/Browning ammo I am having mixed results so far. I will buy several hundred rounds so I will have the ability to reload if it becomes necessary.
I’m with you, I’m hoping for the best.
Enjoy shooting my 6.8 western but i see browning and winchester giving up to soon and can’t find much about the 6.8 western. Really hope it makes it and produces some more options in rifles and ammo!
I agree, I hope they focus on it.
28 nosler is better than all but maybe the 300 wsm. My favorite caliber is my 280 rem and what I always use for deer hogs exotics. My go to elk and bigger game 300 wsm, but my 28 nosler is most versatile flattest shooting caliber ever had and reloaded for. I find it funny that 6.8 western came on like an explosion then disappeared. It didn’t catch on so have to wonder what’s issue with it.
Thanks for watching
It was a great video and a great list. I like the 6.8 western, its a great pick. What huge benefits do you see for the 7 PRC over the 7 Rem Mag?
Not a lot of difference. A little more versatile with the faster twist rate.
Can't remember if you made a video of your top 5 hunting rifle for different game. If not maybe that would be a video idea for you. Im out west, so my selection would be different than yours, due to animals in my area, and ammo availibility.
Great idea!

@@hopefulballistics it`s may so, but ammo suplay world wide??

True, haha. Thanks for watching!
One cartridge to rule them all needs to also consider defending the home land and then putting that in there you need to consider barrel life and also availability. It's 308 Winchester.
I get what your saying, but I made it clear this was strictly hunting. Based on your added parameters I would pick the 30-06, but the 308 is great too
@@hopefulballistics you made the common mistake of creating an artifical distinction being only for hunting. Our forefathers didnt have any such distinction.
