    I agree i knew an old man that crimped his bullets behind the crimp ring. The rifle was costom made, the barrel was a hurder, the action BSA, AND A custom stock. He put all the powder in the bullets that he could, he said it was and amazing fifle.

    Just built my first 284 win. and it is quickly becoming my favorite cartridge. Shooting 168 VLD'S at 2850 with RL19. Its a long action cartridge overall length is 3.220. 26 1/4 inch barrel.

    The 284 would need a long action to get the most out of it because one would have to seat the long BC bullets out to not intrude on powder space. The 280 Remington would be more useful to me in 7mm cartridges. The advantage of the 284 over the 280 Rem. is Lapua makes very uniform brass for it and the theoretical accuracy advantage of short fat cartridge. A short powder column makes for more unform combustion. That is why the 6PPC is popular amoung benchrest shooters. The 284 and 280 have about the maximum effective power capacity for the 7mm bore. Reading PO Ackley gives me that belief. One has to look at velocity gain per grain of powder, barrel life , recoil and what ever else makes for a good rifle cartridge. I'm a hand loader , experimenter , accuracy buff , hunter and plinker. Cost in reloading ammo and barrel life is important to me. A 30-06 capacity 7mm cartridge is ideal to me.

      Use a magnum primer in your 280 Remington with a moderate powder like 4350 and this helps with uniform combustion. I've seen this work extremely well in several of my long action rifles including 280 Rem, 270 Win. Norma makes excellent 280 Rem brass

      That is foe sure a cool gun that is on my bucket list. I always wanted one to customize. I would have it rebored to 338-284, 358-284, or maybe 375-284. I love how slick and handy it is too. I would have a custome stock made, something with a pistol grip and folding stock. Making it like a Paratrooper M1 carbine, or like the folding stock Mini 14..like the ATeam had. That would be a slick little setup with all the power you could ask for and quick too 😂

    Personally, of all the 284 wildcats, I find the 35-284 the most interesting. At 24"/225gr it equals the 35 Whelen with slightly less powder, and for equivalent rifle overall length you get 1.2" longer effective barrel length, so as it gets shorter it pulls ahead. And unlike with the 6.5-284 a short action doesn't limit it at all because you're not playing that high BC, land-chasing game.
    A carbine in 35-284 would be an absolutely sweet boomstick.

    I would like to get a Ruger Go Wild in the 7mm-08. They come with a 1/8 twist, I believe. That's pretty cool. I don't know why no ever made a video on that one.

    The only gun I ever regret selling was I had a browning BLR and 284 should’ve never sold that gun guys that I hunted with that had seven MM could not believe that I could keep up with speed on them at 500 yards it was a beautiful gun shot. Excellent had too many guns at the time and somebody offered to buy it. I sold it it’s the biggest regret of my life. There’s one right now on GunBroker And they’re wanting about $1500 for youth gun that one has a sling holder attached to the barrel. I don’t know whether I like that line you took off the under or not put on one right there I don’t know whether I would overly like the one attached straight to the barrel but anyway, the beautiful gun very accuratenoticed you didn’t name that one. I think browning also made a in a bowl action also I now have a 6.5 2,84 from Christensen and they’re extreme long range rifle and it is a beautiful shooting gun. Also have a nice day.

    🤠 The Military conducted research and found that the maximum recoil that the average person could handle is a 30-06 with a 150 grain bullet! So, let us use this as our baseline! The 284 Winchester pushes out a 150 grain bullet at 2,880 ft/s! The same bullet can be pushed out of the 280 Remington at 2,968 ft/s with a 24" barrel, according to the Nosler #9 Manual! So, which is better regarding performance? The 280 Remington! Then, since it is the pressure that pushes out the bullet, let us compare the 30-06, 280 Remington, and 270 Winchester to see which uses the case the most effectively! The 280 Remington has an operating pressure of 60,000 psi, the 30-06 at 60,180 psi, and the 270 at 65,000 psi! The 30-06 is able to push out a 150 grain Horneday SST bullet (Superformance Ammunition at 3,080 ft/s, with a B.C. of 0.415), the 280 Remington is able to push a 150 grain Nosler ABLR bullet at 2,968 ft/s (B.C. of 0.546), and the 270 Winchester is able to push the 150 grain Speer out at 3,034 ft/s (B.C. of 0.496) or the 150 grain Nosler ABLR at 2918 ft/s with Magpro powder and even faster with Reloader 26 (velocity for this bullet is yet to be determined, but it is much faster with use in other reported bullets loads and has a bullet with a B.C. of 0.591)! So, guess which one wins the performance comparison when you put it into the ballistics calculator? That would be the 270 Winchester! It's higher operating pressure allows more flexibility to find an accurate load, also provides an additional margin of error for safe operating pressures, and yields the fastest and flattest shooting bullet downrange for the hardest hitting results with this comparison! It also does it while yielding the lightest recoil! So, it is the 270 Win for the "Win"! 😁

Axis short action has a long mag that can fit 2.95 in cartridges and feed them. Less than a $400 job including gunsmith cost since it’s a simple barrel swap. That’s my next proje,t mos likely.

    Fine cartridge if you want to be continually hunting for components. Lapua suspended manufacture of 284 brass along with the 6.5x284. So, I hope guys that are crazy over the 284 bought lots of components long ago. Not only those negatives but in order for this round to really perform you have to build a custom. Bunch of hoopla, just go buy a 280 Remington and be done with it.

    • @terryhenry8243
      @terryhenry8243 Рік тому +1

      @@hopefulballistics You might be right on the suspension by lapua. I believe they also look at which cartridges they sell alot of and allocate materials to those items that sell in the greatest numbers. When raw materials are short they are certainly only going to produce big sellers. One of my favorite cartridges is 7mm-08 and they suspended that one also. In my opinion the 284 is just a niche cartridge. There are other 7mm rounds that perform just as well without all the component and custom build issues for maximum performance. It's a dead horse, just like many other really great rounds. When mainline manufacturers no longer chamber for and support a cartridge, it's dead!! Except for the few loonies out there that are willing to chase components, pay huge prices when they find some, and are willing to spend big money having one built that actually performs to a higher level than any factory chambered rifle ever did. Anyway, thanks for taking your time to produce information for folks to enjoy. It's all good and I don't want to sound like I'm knocking your production or the 284 itself. My take on the round is just slanted in a different direction. Thanks again for your work on the subject.

Looking into a custom barrel on a 308 or possibly 243 original pre 64 model 70 to get the Mauser style action but with a 284 chambered barrel. 🤠 I am of the mindset that while you can't call any mothers baby "ugly", that you can find a constructive way to point out that the child "ain't going to win no beauty contest either"! Mr. Alaskan Ballistics called me a "fudd" in my first debate with him, so I have no problems using the nickname "Fudd of the Far North" for him! 😂 I think I have been to hard on Austin though! Sorry Austin! Just be careful who you take cartridge/hunting advice from! I have thick skin, so it doesn't bother me, but I do not like to see others being mislead by "opinions" that aren't backed by "Facts"! So, I am willing to challenge u-tube creators on their incorrect "assumptions"! So, if the parent cartridge can't outperform it's competitor (and keep in mind that we have to also look at cartridge operating pressures), then why would we dare think that the offspring of both would be any different? Today, I am speaking in a comparison of the 284 Winchester and the 280 Remington and how that performance translates to how the 6.5-284 Norma compares to the 270 Winchester! I have also often wondered if Walt Disney's "Elmer Fudd" wasn't derived from Elmer Keith? 🤣 What do you think? 🤷‍♂️ Or, do you think that it was from some "misguided hunter" from the Far North? 🤪

    🕵️‍♂️ I believe that Alaskan Ballistics reported 2,940 ft/s out of his "obsolete" 270 Winchester rifle with that 150 grain Nosler ABLR bullet (so we can use his numbers to prove my point, because I know that will make him "Very Happy"! 😂)! 🧐 I haven't been able to find the primers to reload yet, so I will know when I get to do it for myself! But, I also wanted to point out to you that when you use the Winchester Factory Ammunition with this 150 grain Nosler ABLR bullet (2,900 ft/s velocity) and compare it to that 30-06 Superformance Ammunition (3,080 ft/s), that even with only a 10mph wind, the difference in wind drift is 10" more for the 30-06 at 700 yards! If you have swirling winds at higher velocities, then long distance shooting with this factory 30-06 load becomes problematic! I also ran the 30-06 numbers with the 168 grain Nosler ABLR bullet (Velocity of 3,002 ft/s and a B.C. of 0.525) against the 150 grain Nosler ABLR bullet in the 270 Winchester (B.C. of 0.591 and a Velocity of 2,940 ft/s) - that would be a better choice for the 30-06 - but the 270 Winchester still "Wins" out, due to the superior ballistics of the 0.277 bullet (being able to shoot just as flat, with less wind drift, and does it with less recoil - still meeting our criteria for the "average shooter" and what they can handle from a recoil perspective)! 🥇You should also take note that the 6.5 prc performance numbers have been revised downward by Horneday in their Factory Ammunition and the good old "outdated" 270 Winchester outperforms it in Horneday's own factory loads (270 Winchester 130 and 140 grain Hornaday factory "Superformance" loads shoot flatter than the 130 grain and 143 grain loads of the 6.5 prc)! Not only do I believe that this is why Horneday redesigned the case for the 7mm prc (instead of using this 6.5 prc case), I believe that is why Alaskan Ballistics got rid of his 6.5 prc and went back to using his "less efficient" 6.5-284 case? But, I guess you can ask him yourself? 😁

    • @ronlowney4700
      @ronlowney4700 2 роки тому

      😎 I get that and am not disagreeing with you! And, the 284 Winchester is right in the wheel house of practical and useful for the average shooter, but was created to replace the 270 Winchester in a short action (though it never did). I agree that it is a good cartridge. After all, it has Winchester in it's name! I have been debating some of your other "Aquaintances" regarding the 270 Winchester and it's usefulness, and took the opportunity to "take a shot" at one of it's critics for poo pooing it as "out of date"! 😎 I stand by my rebuttal to him that the 270 Winchester is one of the finest cartridges ever developed (not "over-rated at all" and so is the 30-06 as well) and both have withstood the test of many challengers over the last 100 years and that are great cartridges in their own right - and the 270 Winchester still outsells them! Let's list a few: 264 Winchester Magnum, 6.5 Remington Magnum, 280 Remington, 284 Winchester, 6.5 prc, 270 wsm, 7saum, 7mm wsm, 6.8 Western, 7mm Remington Magnum, 280 AI, 6.5 -284, 6.5-06, 6.5 wsm (leopard), 6.5 saum, 7mm-08, 270 Weatherby Magnum, 7mm Weatherby Magnum...and a hundred more that you could probably list! A hundred years later, it is still holding it's own and is still one of the Top 5 best selling cartridges for a reason (the 30-06 is also in the Top 5 too, which some of these same u-tube "weekend warriors" don't like either)! Sorry about my late night rant (my dad used to say that "nothing good happens after midnight", so I probably need to stay out of the media chat rooms at that hour and keep from getting carried away)! I agree with your assessment and my rant had nothing to do with you! Nope! It was meant for someone from the "far north" that made a video about the 270 Winchester being "out of date", while he extolled his praises on the 6.5 prc (which he later sold 😂) and the 6.5-284 - but still managed to hang on to and produce reloading videos for that "obslete" (as he called it) 270 Winchester! 🤯
