- How to build a small model railroad layout in HO scale? It should be a magnificent landscape, two main lines including fiddle yards, but all based only on approximately four square meters in size. Carlo Viganò, a model railroader living in the Italian town of Germignaga on Lake Maggiore, has solved those model railroading questions with his dreamlike layout, which is called “Plastico Ferroviario Vallecasanuova”.
When Carlo was three years old, his father gave him the first train set and since then he has been fascinated by the passion for model trains and railroads. As a child Carlo and his father built a model railroad layout on a standard plate. Later, they built a garden railroad based on LGB models in G scale. During these years, however, Carlo was influenced by Josef Brandl, an artist and rail modeler from Germany. So he decided to imitate the artworks of Brandl: He wanted to use the last available space in his cellar for building a model railroad layout where nature, landscape and trains should dominate.
Carlo’s layout consists of two levels, i.e. of two track networks. There is a double track main line for international traffic, which is mainly used by Italian passenger trains. There is also a single track line for freight traffic. Finally, there is a branch line for local transport, where the famous Italian diesel railcar “FS Class ALn 668” is still in service. All trains move on an area of just 3.5 x 1.5 meters. Furthermore, each railroad line has fiddle yard at the back of the layout, where a total of eleven complete model trains are parked.
The trains travel through a valley crowned by a medieval castle belonging to the lords of “Casanouva”. Around the castle there are woods and a vineyard. There are also 152 trees that reproduce the typical landscape of Lake Maggiore. There are only a few buildings; only a hut, a small house at the railroad embankment and the castle. Italian locomotives and trains of the “Ferrovie dello Stato”, known as “Trenitalia”, are in the center of attention as well as tunnels, portals and retaining walls.

I am not into European railroading as a modeler but I think it's "cool". Those passenger coaches are downright beautiful and I am greatly impressed by the lush Mediterranean scenery.

I complimenti si sprecano a aggiungo che è uno de pochi plastici dove viene utilizzata realisticamente la linea aerea con i pantografi a contatto e non chiusi o alzati a metà. E' possibile che elettricamente i locomotori prendano la corrente dai binari perché oggi col digitale si possono far girare più treni indipendenti ma comunque il realismo, che è il top per ogni fermodellista, è sicuramente stato raggiunto al 100%. Chapeau.

Maybe I am imagining things but it seems like the commuter trains run a hair faster than the freight JUST LIKE IN REAL LIFE at least in tracks up to class 5. This is simply amazing!. Excellent craftsmanship.

Sono piacevolmente incantato davanti a questo video! Oltre ad una regia perfetta, anche riguardo ai suoni, l'insieme è estremamente realistico ed inusuale. Ho fatto negli anni 70 del sec. scorso un plastico che occupava una stanza, con catenarie di captazione elettrica e con la possibilità di marcia di tre treni simultanei e che ho pedestremente messo in rete ma che nemmeno lontanamente sfiorava la perfezione di questa opera d'arte. Sul lago Maggiore ebbi modo, anni fa, di visitare il plastico del prof.Ogliari che conoscevo da molti anni, stupendo ma che anch'esso nemmeno lontanamente si avvicinava al realismo di questo ora in esame. Grandi complimenti all'autore Carlo Viganò e grazie anche per le dettagliate informazioni e grazie a Pilentum per la pubblicazione! Cordiali saluti, Fabrizio
PS: per la parte di treni italiani,consiglierei di aggiungere almeno un paio di vetture imbrattate dai vandali così sarebbe ancora più realistico e rappresentativo di questo fallito paese da terzo mondo!

He show us the LIFE that inhabits the model, the life that surrounds the locos. Without it, it would be just another generic "Model Train video". Those details, for me, make the difference with the hundreds others.
As for the work of Carlo is really good considering the surface. Like Jan M said "When it comes to foilage it is the nicest i've seen." The texture of that grass is really nice. And for Slippery Storm, from what it's shown i think that the Catenaries are for real. If not they were used in a very realistic manner!

Quoto tutti i commenti fin qui espressi....effettivamente si tratta di un opera d'arte di eccellente realismo spinto ai massimi livelli....solo alcune inquadrature al passaggio dei treni ad altezza anomala - l'occhio della fotocamera non rispecchia un'altezza uomo - avrebbero reso anche la ripresa non riconducibile ad un plastico...bene ad ogni modo le riprese aeree e quelle da altezza relativa....complimentissimi per quet'impianto.
