I can’t help but wonder if the problem y’all have with airbrushing is because you use water. I’m pretty sure the stabilizer that comes with it is meant to prevent separation when you thin the paint similarly to using medium with other brands of paint.
@@knightsljx You may be able to order it through your local game / hobby shop. I'm located in Canada, and faced the same issue. But because AP has a good distribution network, I was able to order it through the game shop closest to me.
They dropped this range just as I bought the whole Pro Acryl range (which is phenomenal btw) so the compulsive paint buyer in me screamed with frustration at the timing. Speaking of Mephiston Red; the Pro Acryl Bold Pyrrole Red is my new favorite red and their white is THE best white almost to the point of saying it is an objective fact 😊.
Proacryl's reds are great. Unfortunately, there's just two of them, while the range has places where colors are almost indistinguishable from each other. So if I am painting anything that is red, large enough I need consistency in color, and with complex illumination, I end up having to use 3 or 4 manufacturers to get credible highlights and shadows.
Awesome boys. Got the fanatic mega set on preorder and I cannot wait. If your using biostrip, before you start scrubbing cover it in liquid dish soap/Washing up liquid then start scrubbing, it helps stop the paint trying to re adhere to the model and your brush bristles
As far as the washes, Army Painter did state that the wash formulation actually hasn’t changed beyond packaging, so if anyone wants to try the washes before Fanatic drops, those are a safe purchase ☺️👍🏻
I bought the old army painter box, I absolutely love it. I know it had some shortcomings, but it enhanced me as a painter massively. I started out painting model aeroplanes, boats etc. I would buy the correct paints and paint in the liveries of the era. It is a bit paint by numbers, you are aiming for authenticity. I bought Warhammer models to paint something more interesting. I followed the paint guides for the models I got and bought the corresponding citadel paints. Again paint by numbers, following guides. From my model building I had a vortex mixer, brushes and a lot of the stuff needed for the mini painting hobby so wasn't an absolute noob. I bought some more minis from other games and was looking for paints for them, picking out individual paints and seeing what I had covered from my own collection was a lot of work. I spotted the Army painter box was on sale, it has a lot of paints and covered all of what I was looking for and more. Once I got working with those paints I got a lot braver! I went off-piste so to speak, picked colours that looked interesting to me, blended paints, experimented with colour schemes, shading and highlighting. It made the hobby a whole new level of fun for me as I was unshackled from my paint collection (50 shades of RLM and RAL gray lol) to a wide spectrum of colours. I am a much more confident painter than when I was following the guide and afraid that I would didn't have the exact red from the guide, now I know that it doesn't matter a whole lot as long as it looks good. Being able to pick a paint like warlock purple to paint ribbons on a mini, I am building a story up in my head and applying it to the mini. For me this is what makes the hobby great. Sure the old paints need to be mixed well, mightn't have the best coverage on coat 1 or from one paint to another. But you can work around this and still get a decent effect! Thank you to the army painter for building on this set to bring out a collection of new and improved paints. I can't wait to try them out.
I bought the complete set on the Black Friday offer as it was £170 for the whole range, seemed like a bargain, I like it a fair bit but some paints so hit and miss, tbh I'll probably use a lot of them for airbrushing when my new set of the Fanatic arrives
This was great... now if you wouldnt mind doing this for Pro Acryl, P3,... Vallejo Xpress.. Vallejo Model air... Lidl & Aldi Poster paint... DIY store floor wood stain varnish thanks
Good to see an objective review of this. Theres some issues like all paint ranges but other youtube reviews were making this range out to be the all time dogs bollocks.
Just an extra tip for glaze medium, its also an excellent pigment powder fixer For my dusty basing I mix ith woth water and stir in my pigment powders. You can then slather the wet mix on a base and when it dries it keeps the dusty look and doesn't rub off!
Ages ago I used to paint minis all the time, back when they were made of lead and I was lucky to have Testors model paint in little glass bottles and I loved it. Over the years the paints got better and better. Eventually because life changes I ended up getting out of the hobby, not of my choosing unfortunately. A few years back I picked it up once again and have acquired a few different paints here and there from different lines. Lately though I've been able to once again find people to game with and we all like to 3D print and paint some of those paint were the Army Painter Speed Paint line and I love them. I've since gotten all of them. In march I turn 60, my eyes and hands aren't what they once were and my skills aren't what they once were either but as a present to myself I decided to finally go all in on a paint line and go from there. So I am waiting as patiently as I can to get my notice that my Fanatics box has shipped and I'm looking forward to putting it to good use.
As someone who can spend ages deciding which colors to get - especially when ordering online - having a triad system laid out like this is a godsend. For example I know that I like AK Interactive or Vallejo Model Color, but when it comes to picking the right paint or choosing a fitting shadow or highlight color I feel so overwhelmed. I love Vallejo Game Color with its BSL system but the range itself with its 80 colors or so is a bit limited, so I'm looking forward to the fanatic range as a complimentary to my collection. One thing I'm wondering is if you only had the money to buy three colors which of the six in the triad would you go for? 1 - 3 - 5? or something else?
For everyone who feels like product X is easy to use, especialy if had to use similar products for a decade or two (doesn't matter if they like or dislike the proces by the way), always test it on a a few people that never did the activity , then and only then you will learn if something is easy. I found out that , wnile better then pots, drop bottles with ball bearings in them require a basic training . Or you can end up with a small explosion of paint from a kid trying to "unclog" a drip bottle.
After buying pro acryl coal black, even Vallejo 950 black is not matt, that paint is like looking at a piece of charcoal. Love both of these paints, though.
As a Citadel Colour user; easy access, lots of UA-cam guides using specific paints - it made a lot of sense as a beginner. As my paints DRY OUT and run out I'm replacing with Army Painter Fanatics one at a time until its all Army Painter.
I'm a Mackem but live in Essex .I can tell you are all from Essex just by looking ... its the Turkish teeth and Turkish hair line makes you all stand out among englishmen. P.S I found army painter brushes are quite good and at the price point they sell them they are great. I've been using the character amd regiment brush for 3 months now , aslong as you clean them properly they are still holding there point... P.S. again I've only been painting for 14 months now.
I can empathise with James, my collections of paint would mean I'd need a months holiday to transfer to droppers! Ideally I'd like every paint in both container to have best of both worlds 😅
Love it again, thanks for reading my comment out, was fun listening you butcher my name, is Sorley btw. Anyhow as an Benfleet born Essex boy I know the strength of the accent can vary, just stay away form Canvey Island! Also it would be hilarious if you got those fake tans, esp when Joe has his blond hair!!
I see the Dawalt Sniper has moved onto becoming the Braun Bruiser with the electric toothbrush discussion, James has all these nicknames in the pursuit of efficiency and must be applauded.
Reaper's Triad system has similar problems where some of the colours are too close together. The "I just did my normal thing" sounds like a common problem people have when using a new tool (and paint is a tool). Some tools (like paint) need a bit more care to adjust for their unique properties than just doing what you would normally do.
I pre-ordered and got burnt on speedpaint 1.0, so post that I bought wave 1 & 2 of Two Thin Coats and backed Ultracryl. So It will be a while before I need to buy any more paint. However, I'm glad Army Painter is really investing in R&D and quality. A rising tide raises all boats.
P.S. I ordered a small bottle of Speed Paint medium 2.0 to mix a drop in with the 1.0 paint to hopefully cure the re-activation issue. Since the colors in the 1.0 range were great.
@@Old_Wizard_Miniswere you able to deal with reactivation in this way? I got speedpaints 1.0 and the biggest issue with them for me is spreading issue, it just wants to slowly spread around
I would love to hear you do this for other paint ranges on the market! I know it might be a lot of work but your insights are always valuable (Yes even Joe's). Thanks for what you do!!
Such a great review of a paint range with an honest mindset and from different angles. I'll admit I've been put off the AP range in the past due to very poor results with things Iike their rattlecans and standard paint. I don't think the previous set of influencers did them massive favours by gaslighting genuine quality concerns from the public because they were so focused on sticking it to GW. But with reviews such as yours and Stahlys I would be tempted to try a few for the collection. I'm a new convert to the Strong Tone (cheers Joe, genius call there) so haven't been steered wrong by you guys yet. I guess I'm picking up some glaze medium from Hobbycraft then 😅
Time to hit up the gaming gang to find a spare space marine for the monthly challenge. This podcast is fantastic and you should all be immensely proud of it. Can't wait for next week 😁.
This is what I hear; You bought a Corvette and love the way it drives. Then Mario Andretti shows up and drives it and tells you it's bit tight in corners. It's still a Corvette you love and you will probably never drive it like Mario. So it's awesome except some edge case scenario.
As another viewer has pointed out, I wonder if the paint lifting issues were caused by the airbrushed gold base, which seemed to have caused quite a bit of a problem to begin with. Also, interesting fact: Vallejo Model Color also has a Pure Red, which is quite pink / cool tone, instead of the royal red you were expecting. They also have a colour called Red, which is... not what you expect red to be. The royal red that fits your description could either be Vermilion, or Magenta. So this could be an industry naming convention.
Totally agree that releasing the flexible triads would be great. I'm not buying the full set but would pick up a couple of triads when starting a new project.
Great podcast as always. Army painter always looked too old fashioned to me, but they are popular so paints must be alright. And biiig kudos on their colour guidance. Browsing paints often feels like an unnecessary minigame. Take notes GW since you borked your website including the paint combo's and examples. I use an ultrasonic cleaner and dettol for stripping (plastic) models. Best way I have found. Don't know about resin or finecast.
My dad was from Southend (Souffend) as he used to call it and he’d lived up north for over 45 years and still sounded more like he was from Essex than you three 😂😂love the show and if I’m back down Southend one day would love to pop in to siege and say hello
Having used both a electric and a normal toothbrush to scrub models with, I can confirm that a electric toothbrush does not make a big mess at all. In fact the regular one is slightly messier, but both are fine really.
“Beginner paints” is a misnomer. Army Painter are the paints you begin with and can end with. Not just an entry point. Of course, you should round out your paint set with the colors and properties you want, not blind loyalty to “beginners,” “pro,” or “expensive” paints. Citadel makes some great washes and a few unique colors worth picking up as well. Vallejo, Pro Acryl, automotive primer, etc. are all great additions. But when you need a strong foundation of colors, washes, effects, contrasts, primers, etc. the new Fanatics set will carry 80% of what you need.
I gave up on The Army Painter a while back. Every single product seemed to require an "asterisk" excusing some characteristic or flaw. I was fooled one too many times. Vallejo, Citadel, TTC, and others are so good I won't worry about TAP.
This is a big step, since you all have paints you like, but it would be great to see at least one of you use the army painter fanatic paints for each month’s challenge. Even if it’s only one paint. That way by the end of the year you’ll probably have used most of the range.
You guys mentioned it numerous times during the podcast, and one of you tried to explain it, but I still don't understand the concept. Could you maybe discuss "Triad" in a future episode in more detail and provide any visual examples?
I only ever used disgusting ooze, rust and strong tone (the latter which I never really liked). No paint range is perfect so it will be interesting to see what parts of this one you guys gravitated towards. I have 3 full (in the case of 1, mostly full) paint ranges of other brands and what I gravitate towards is often not what I expected to when they were new to me.
I am curious if the airbrushing issues were caused by thinning with water instead of an airbrush medium. I typically get way better results if I thin with airbrush medium/flow-aid rather than straight water. Water alters the chemical composition of the paint too much and changes the properties.
We all use Vallejo Airbrush Thinner - we have spoken to Army Painter directly about this and will be addressing on a future episode once trying out a couple of other things 🙂
First time listener, long time painter. Solid review. Speedpaint metalics Ive been a big fan of, curious to try these new ones. Its going to be hard to unseat Vallejo metallic color/air for me though
At the start of the video: If you have anything but praise for AP I'll hunt you down, enter your home, and tip over your Nuln Oil. Closed lid, obviously, but I'll still tip it over.
Frankly the new Vallejo Model Color hypes me far more. Not to say anything bad about AP, they have their niches in my setup, but I dont see the fanatic range outright beating the new VGC or Pro Acryl
We all used Vallejo Thinner, which is what we use with no issue with most other paint ranges. We have spoken to Army Painter about it and will address some further tests on a future episode!
I’m sure someone can correct me if I’m wrong, but isn’t the stabilizer supposed to be used for thinning? I watched a video where stabilizer was the breakthrough that allowed the paints to suspend the increased amount of pigments; and I feel like I remember a video I watched somewhere saying the stabilizer was what you used to thin down the paints. I wonder how that would perform rather than water. Having to used a proprietary thinner rather than just water would be a big L imo. I’ve got the set sitting on my desk and I can’t wait to mess with them.
New Paul is pretty salty! Better haircut though. /Bants. As a below average painter, the characters also get left till last, but that's cause I'm terrified of ballsing it up.
As a commission painter myself ive pre ordered the full set but im now thinking maybe looking elsewhere. I have most of the current pro acryl range and a few Vallejo, Ak 3rd Gen, AP Speed paints, Nearly full range of contrast too. I was looking at these for easy of tracking and redoing armies without having to mix paints and hold bottles of colours. Really at a point of possibly canceling the order. £500+ is alot of money to out out if the range is a hit or miss.
Intresting to listen, Ive been using the newst Air range that i assume this new release has been based on and ive been very happy with many of those, nd the triad system in general. Although just as well, i wouldn't use them as my only paints at all, but its another option.
My biggest issue with AP, is as you can see in a lot of the painting groups, is when people complain or has some sort of criticism with the brand, they get booted from the groups or blocked on Social Media, tons of examples on valid points being said and then suddenly the user is blocked, not a way to run a company.
Why don't you have a show where you design the ideal starter set with paints from any range? Maybe certain online retailers could sell it as a slightly discounted set??
Hey guys, in one of your videos you mentioned your personal favourite brands "metallic" colours? I think it was Scale75 but confirm??? I cant find the episode
I have the mega set pre ordered even though I totally don’t need these 😂 oh and I wonder if the stabiliser would help for thinning down for the airbrush maybe
James you let me down.. how could you put the poster boys in my birth month!! Thats a harsh cruel punishment for a fellow Blood Angels fan 🤦♂️☹️😭😭 😂😂😂😂
interesting episode, A bit of CC , the chap in the right , in the black hoodie, doesnt appear to like being interrupted, and once he starts speaking , doesnt leave the other chaps much room to chip in. I think the chap on the left is either consciously or un-consciously aware of this trait , as he says things like "let me just say" , "let me just chip in". The chap on the right is saying interesting and valuable things, but i dont think we (as the audience) are losing value if the other chaps can chip in as me (personally) am watching this more for entertainment than for the actual information
Consumer oriented? How about the people who have bought the first Speedpaint set that was faulty and got nothing than: ah yeah we made speedpaint 2.0 now that are not as faulty but you just have to buy it again or get F't.
Really not a fan of ap,their brushes flat out suck and never used a paint by them that i liked. Citadel contrast wipes the floor with both formulas of their speed paint. Had 2 tins of their primer explode as well wont touch their stuff.

The haircut looks good. 👍
Fantastic in depth review of the new fanatic paints. Really good work guys.
I gave up on The Army Painter a while back. Every single product seemed to require an "asterisk" excusing some characteristic or flaw. I was fooled one too many times. Vallejo, Citadel, TTC, and others are so good I won't worry about TAP.
We ❤ Paul
This is a big step, since you all have paints you like, but it would be great to see at least one of you use the army painter fanatic paints for each month’s challenge. Even if it’s only one paint. That way by the end of the year you’ll probably have used most of the range.
You guys mentioned it numerous times during the podcast, and one of you tried to explain it, but I still don't understand the concept. Could you maybe discuss "Triad" in a future episode in more detail and provide any visual examples?
James mate, you couldn't sound any more Essex and that proppa essex laugh.. geeza lmao
Matt Black is named after Matt, so I don't know if it's supposed to be Matte or not.
You boy's should do a podcast on each primary colour and what paint you recommend
Beautiful minis. Nice talk.
Dip the sh*t out of everything with Army Painter Quickshade and get on with your lives!
Aah, classic. For me it was painting a Black Templar Sword Brother first out of my pack of Primaris Crusaders. Mild regret
What did you use to thin the metallic for airbrushing? Perhaps using some of the stabilizer may mitigate the issues you had
I wonder if the stabilizer also affects the airbrush-ability.
18:32 "Ju-Legion"? Is this for the month of July? But consider... "Ju-Lion El'Jonson"?
Intresting to listen, Ive been using the newst Air range that i assume this new release has been based on and ive been very happy with many of those, nd the triad system in general.
Although just as well, i wouldn't use them as my only paints at all, but its another option.
“I got into magic…”
“Magic THE GATHERING!”

Maybe certain online retailers could sell it as a slightly discounted set??
great episode Paul looks a bit tired this week though
Hey guys, in one of your videos you mentioned your personal favourite brands "metallic" colours?
I think it was Scale75 but confirm??? I cant find the episode
You are likely thinking of George talking about the Scale75 metallics, correct!
@@SiegeStudios thanks bro!!
I have the mega set pre ordered even though I totally don’t need these 😂 oh and I wonder if the stabiliser would help for thinning down for the airbrush maybe
OK, so legit ask, which dropper bottles are the good ones? I tried two kinds so far and they were atrocious.
Get Paul Mclachlan on from Siege to discuss his past life as a game store owner and magic gathering pro
Why does that blood angel at the end in the hobby hack look like it's dying for a wee.
James you let me down.. how could you put the poster boys in my birth month!!
Thats a harsh cruel punishment for a fellow Blood Angels fan 🤦♂️☹️😭😭 😂😂😂😂
Wasn’t my choice Martyn! March for Mcragge has been an annual thing for many years now! It’s practically official haha! James / Siege
@@SiegeStudios i guess we have to let the blue Smerf’s have some of the lime light!! 😂🩸🩸🩸
why not the next moth challange only army< painter to
interesting episode, A bit of CC ,
the chap in the right , in the black hoodie, doesnt appear to like being interrupted, and once he starts speaking , doesnt leave the other chaps much room to chip in.
Lurking………
Jungle june🤷♂️
Can i have a TLDR?
Stop casting shade at the Raven Guard! Okay, they like shade, but still!
Consumer oriented? How about the people who have bought the first Speedpaint set that was faulty and got nothing than: ah yeah we made speedpaint 2.0 now that are not as faulty but you just have to buy it again or get F't.
Paul? I don't know what all the fuss is about...
Really not a fan of ap,their brushes flat out suck and never used a paint by them that i liked. Citadel contrast wipes the floor with both formulas of their speed paint. Had 2 tins of their primer explode as well wont touch their stuff.
