    Great video. I love my egolf, it’s such a geat car. I considered buying an ID3, bur after a testdrive the idea was gone 😁. The range of the golf is enough for nearly everything you throw at it, and range isn’t everything what makes a good EV. The combination of every feature makes a great car, and the eGolf is one, for sure 😄👍 (only difference is, i don’t like the digital display so much. The analog dials with the big infotainment screen is it for me. Everybody important is clearly visible in every lighting situation, amd the rest is on the infotainment, where i use google maps and stuff) PS: there are two levels of lane assist. The simple one which only protects you from leaving the lane, for people who don’t want the system to interfere with their driving, and the more active one, which holds the car in the middle of the lane, and is more the thing you obviously expected. You can change the behavior in the system settings. I like the more active one, too 😁

    Hi Bjørn, @12:50 you explain the lane assist, but in this car it seems like the adaptive lane assist was disabled in the car settings menu. If this was disabled, the car swing between the lines and the system only try to avoid crossing the lines. Try again with enabled "adaptive lane assist" and you will see the difference. This feature is also included in my 2015 e-Golf and works really fine.

    Bjorn, excellent video on the importance of battery pack temperature. I will recommend this video to anyone considering buying an EV. Shows the importance and limitation of passive cooling. I wonder how the Golf EV battery pack would do in Spain in the summer months? I will take my infrared gun and check my pack to see if I can notice differences before and after driving.
    I liked the point that you could see that the car was limiting the charge rate based on the battery temperature at the level 3 chargers.

    Had a chance to see both the e-Golf 36kWh & Focus EV 33kWh. In terms of car, the e-Golf is definitely nicer (even the regular Golf is nicer than the Focus) car, but the Focus EV has a slightly smaller battery but has active liquid battery cooling. Still both cars are selling for ~$35k in Canada with incentives makes them cheaper than their gasoline counterparts in certain provinces. The Volt & Bolt/Ampera & Ampera-E ring in at ~$10k more. Seems to be a solid choice given the high range & hatchback flexibility.

    I would prefer this car over model 3, I like the the screen positions over the large single one and of course the build quality. But the range I think for this price is still not good enough.

    • @MustermannAnybody
      @MustermannAnybody 6 років тому +4

      Lone Wolf Build quality? A non climatized battery is basically zero build quality. It’s the usual VW crap just like with their Diesels. Stuff that looks good but is either a lie or won’t last.

    • @Altkinx
      @Altkinx 5 років тому

      Lone Wolf build quality is better overall on model 3.

    • @fiehlsport
      @fiehlsport 4 роки тому

      BOB I’ve driven them back to back - build quality is better on the Volkswagen. It’s very solid with premium materials inside. Model 3 is still an American car and has a way to go, but is overall the better EV by a landslide.

    Bjorn, love your videos, your country is beautiful. Reminds me of New England in the fall.
    Too bad that some city cars with larger batteries don't have active cooling. With more level 3 chargers you want to hit the road but not cook the batteries. I would like to see the temperature of the battery pack on a display in EVs. In the hotter parts of the world that information would be handy.

    Low resistance tyres will always be louder than regular.
    Some people have even changed wheel bearings because of the road/rolling noise, but real reason was tyres. :D

    I think the eGolf has only 310V battery voltage as opposed to 400V, as many others have. This may also affect CCS charging speed, as in most chargers more power would exceed the current (A) limit. Maybe it isn't just the heat that makes charging the eGolf slower than many other cars...

    • @bjornnyland
      @bjornnyland  7 років тому +1

      It has lower nominal voltage than other cars.

    • @christiank.548
      @christiank.548 7 років тому

      The e-Golf limits the maximum charging speed at 40kW. I tested that on CCS-Chargers with higher current output than 125A.

    • @matthiasb-punkt3525
      @matthiasb-punkt3525 7 років тому +3

      The voltage is 323V. On a 50kW Charger with 125A, the e-Golf can only load 125A x 323V = 40375VA = 40kW. The "old" e-Golf was able to load up to 50kW on a 165A charger. The new one is completely limited to 40kW because of different cells.

    Hi Bjorn. In this video you do some maths to work out that you're charging at 34kW on a Fortum charger? I think you divided 10.48 by 18.4 then multiplied by 60, can you tell me what units they were as I couldn't make out the charger screen clearly? What is the formula for working out charging speeds of electric cars?

    Three days ago I visited VW and asked the sales person if the new E-Golf has active battery cooling. She said "Yes, liquid cooling". Was she misinformed or do you just don't consider that good enough compared to fans? If she was right, isn't it inaccurate of you to say that it doesn't have active battery cooling?
    Love your good videos!

    • @randyvanvliet226
      @randyvanvliet226 7 років тому

      It has passive cooling. The new battery pack just uses more densely packed lithium batteries, the case is pretty much the same holding the whole battery pack, which now weighs 4 or 5 kgs more than the 2015 model. Ask your saleperson to demonstrate the active cooling on the new battery pack for you, and where it says so in the owners manual.

    • @randyvanvliet226
      @randyvanvliet226 7 років тому +3

      Ditched? it's had passive cooling since day 1 when the 2015 e-Golf was brought on the market. The only change in 2017 to the battery is that VW went with newer chemistry higher capacity capable guts in the battery. The weight has increase maybe 8 to 10 pounds, for the 700# battery. www.autoblog.com/2014/03/31/vw-e-golf-will-not-have-active-cooling-system-lithium-battery/ I find it hilarious that all you arm chair car enthusiasts are smarter that Volkswagen. How many car models have you designed, built, sold and warrantied? Zero? I thought so.

    Thanks for the video documentation of your trip! Keep up the good work!

  • @pebh

    Ok... so, if you drive faster, the battery will heat and you'll take longer to charge. If you drive slower, you can charge faster! Overall, the time spent on a trip will be more or less the same. Right? If so, it's probably better to drive slower, as you'll save the battery and the drive train. Am I thinking right?

    • @randyvanvliet226
      @randyvanvliet226 7 років тому

      Look at how fast you can recharge, and ow fast you can discharge. Energy used = mass x velocity squared. that velocity is squared tell you how much more energy you use going faster.

Also I understand that Jaguar have future plans to replace gasoline and diesel engines with electric motor and battery for their older Jaguar cars in future as customer option. Assuming a constant charge rate of close to 40kW at consecutive charging spots, one can determine a 'sweet spot' at about 115kmh, where the total time of travel (travel time for legs plus time for charging) is minimal. Driving slower means longer time on the road and less comsumption, that shortens the charging time, driving faster puts everyhing in reverse.
      However, due to the heat gate issue speed should be lower that 115 kmh at really long trips, extending beyond 500km or so.

      The e-Golf has the famous German "look" that bespeaks performance. VW has a reputation for building driver's cars that provide excellent road feedback, handling, and power. On the other hand, the Ioniq is significantly larger. I had the Ioniq hybrid and the rear trunk (boot) space is very generous before putting the rear seats down! Also the Ioniq has enough rear seat and leg room for a large adult male - I checked it with my own self.
      Also, I think Ioniq has a nicely "aggressive" look that is more streamlined than e-Golf. Then there is the warranty which should NEVER be forgotten or discounted. Here in the United States Hyundai's battery warranty is "lifetime" on top of all the layers of warranty. Because Hyundai vehicles have proven to be so reliable and durable, many dealerships here in the U.S. have started offering 20 year, 200,000 mile warranty coverage through their dealership. Obviously if they had to actually honor each and every extended warranty they'd go bankrupt, so yes, it is a marketing ploy, but it's still a valid warranty that's there if you ever need it.
      Electric cars are very close to "forever" cars except for the battery, and even then, if you only lose about 10% charge at 100,000 miles, these newer electrics with the larger packs will still have decent range.

    27:30 Is the reason this car is not an option for me and I will keep my Model 3 reservation. Elon would never allow such half-crafted solutions.
    10:18 also seems to be in favour of Tesla
    11:09 Point to e-Golf maybe, however Bjørn does not say directly whether it's better than a Tesla on wind-noise.
    58:39 However it seems that e-Golf has a better headlight system, allowing you to drive with high-beam constantly on. I don't believe Model 3 has a similar system, would like to see this as an option to Model 3 also.

    mm... this is a problem: cause all europe lie south than Normay so in spring/summer with 30 celsius degrees day it will never charge at 50 kw dc and maybe not even at 12kw as shown in video when temperature was 15°C. no good at all!

      yes, you are right, I confused with 12kwh, but what I still mean is that these slow recharging problems can be even more present and serious at higher temperature and I think is a severe bad point.

      This is a city car. Bjorn has used it outside of it's normal designed mode of operation. If you drive the car in a mild manner before doing a quick recharge, the battery is cooler to start off, so will recharge at a faster rate. Keep in mind, the chemical reaction on a lithium battery generates heat both discharging rapidly ( driving the car fast vs slow before a recharge) and charging rapidly. It just changes whether the anodes or cathodes generate the heat in the battery packs. I repeat, this is a city car. If you want to do 1000 km in a day, buy a TDI instead. If you want to putt putt around the city, with occaisional longer trips, buy the e-Golf. Optimally, recharge the battery in the cool of the morning with a timed recharge, with the battery being recharged late at night, or in the early morning, with regular AC charge controller built into the car, instead of the very hard on the battery DC fast charger mode, which never balance recharges the lithium batteries, something that is very very important to the longevity of the lives of all the battery packs in this car. Don't skip the over night full recharges. The cars battery needs them, every other recharge.

      Randy van Vliet I think you made your point! The overheating problem IS a problem. I hope that this will not turn into a big issue for VW like the past BIG issue. It will hault their EV way.

    • @randyvanvliet226

      The point is that none of us here know more about building cars than Volkswagen. The have a target market and target demographics. The naysayers here are not part of that market. I am part of that market, which is why I bought my 2015 e-Golf SEL, bought my own 240V level2 EVSE and wired in a 50 amp 240V dedicated outlet for my 240 V 40m e-motorwerks EVSE in the garage. Charging for me is never a problem, because I don't rely on public infrastructure to recharge. I recharge at home, like VW recommends. If you cant recharge at home, you shouldn't own an EVSE like an e-Golf. It's just that simple. You are not in the target demographics market VW is looking to sell to. Buy a Tesla if you need longer range, or a Chevrolet Bolt.

    Great video, like your detailed videos! Your the only one actually driving long distance and can compare to different cars. I'm deciding between eGolf and Ioniq, which one would you choose ?
    Sidenote, eGolf is much more expensive with some accessory.

    • @bjornnyland
      @bjornnyland  6 років тому +1

      +Misc Ioniq:
      + Cheaper
      + More efficient
      + Electric driver's seat
      + Loads of safety and convenience features
      + Lots of cargo space
      - No app support
      - Poor high beams
      - Preheat only possible when plugged in
      e-Golf:
      - Excellent interior quality
      + Outstanding adaptive headlights
      + Very good soundproofing
      + Very good touch screen
      + Very good instrument cluster
      + App support for preheating, etc
      - Limited luggage space
      - No active battery cooling
      - Expensive
      - Slower fast charging speed due to lower nominal voltage

      Upgrades as standard in some countries is common for every car maker. It doesn't make it a rip off. It sometimes offers cheaper alternatives. In Canada the heat pump system is standard on all models but an upgrade in Europe.

  • @Andrew-nu8ez
    @Andrew-nu8ez 7 років тому +7

    I'll buy a Tesla if it's more reliable, better quality material, storage on doors, and better off center crash test. For the price, it should be better than a Benz. The only thing going for it is the quick acceleration and technology. Everyone has different needs. Tesla EV is just too much of a trouble with it breaking down every few months. If you want to save money and the world, but a Leaf, e Golf, or Bolt. You don't need all that battery on a daily drive. How often do you drive over 100 miles on a daily basis? People that want a reliable and stress free car will buy an Audi, Porsche, or an Asian PHEV or Hybrid. Porsche is expensive, but the resell value is very high so you don't really lose that much. For me, I want a Porsche Panamera or Cayenne PHEV for the head turning exhaust sound, excitement, luxury, quality, and reliability. Why worry about charging when you can use gas as a backup. That's why Model 3 is dead. Buyers will have many problems and STRESS.

    • @gewdvibes
      @gewdvibes 7 років тому +5

      “Model 3 is dead” LOLOLOLOLOL
      Also, “why worry about charging when you can use gas as a backup” because the point of an electric car is to not pollute the air with garbage, that’s why.

    • @coast2coast00
      @coast2coast00 7 років тому +1

      I think a tesla comparison is valid, for example comparing the luggage space, engine start/stop button and battery cooling with a tesla would be useful, because it would be comparing against a car that did things the right way.
      You could say of a civic if it did some things the way a mercedes does it would be a better car, and it would show that to improve the car, you would have to have the things that a much more expensive car would have, maybe because it already is the best in it's class.

    • @bjornnyland
      @bjornnyland  7 років тому +3

      Another reason why comparing with Tesla is valid: Soon Model 3 will hit the road. Model 3 has the same level of soundproofing as newer Model S and X.

      Bjørn Nyland All your video reviews a great you are the most heads on EVs guy on YT , ....and all of us who follow your channel greatly appreciate your work. On subject of soundproofing new 2018 Honda Accord will have a soundproofing strips on the rims to quiet the road/ tires noise, similar foamy strips , that's what Tesla use on model X rims.

    • @martyparizeau3327
      @martyparizeau3327 7 років тому +4

      Bjørn Nyland You do some comparison with the leaf and Ioniq, I will give you that. That is not my point. Comparing features, ei: the lane assists(in this case the eGolf) with the autonomous driving of the Tesla is not the same. Again apples with apples. It would be like comparing the a nav system from 10years ago with a tactile 4.3 display to a OEM Google powered nav system of today. Take what I wrote the way you want but it doesn’t make sense to compare a $90000 high tech car to a “modified” fossil car at $36000 (Canadian pricing😊) The technology involve in Tesla is extraordinary, there is nothing on the market today that comes even close. My point was simply when reviewing an EV, it is best to compare it to it’s direct competitors. For the Tesla 3 and those that say it’s a valid comparison, your wrong! The Tesla 3, alto Tesla says it’s a mass market car is again, wrong. It is a mass production car for Tesla, when you think of a mass market car you think of an affordable option(ei; Civic, Sentra, Elantra...)the Tesla 3 is more affordable than the Model S and Model X but still an investment of well over $40000 for a base Model with no extras. Tesla is a high tech luxury EV car company. Do not get me wrong, Tesla cars, I find ARE the level where all EVs should be, reality now it is not. I think of all the reviews online of EVs your are complete and realistic. Having said that you do open yourself for some feedback, positive or negative. Like I stated before, I subscribed to your Chanel because of the road trips and the reality of driving and EV. I think your doing a fabulous job. Do not think that my post was to put you down, on the contrary. Keep up the good work.

    Thanks I was waiting for this review for some time now. I owe new E-Golf now for 3 month and just today turned 10.000km with it. I love it. I didn't have any issue with overheating till now but I also didn't drive more then 500km in a day.
    I love dinamic light and hope they will never brake if they have to brake then I hope they will do while still warranty is active :)
    "Autopilot" to be exact you can drive without touching it for 33s then car will automaticly brake. But you can also trick system when you hang on steering wheel weight arround 0,5-1kg, then system will think you are touching it and in my experiance car drove alone for more than 5km (but you have to have both lines on tarmac visable).
    Again thanks for this video, you came almost to same conclusions as I did, but for me this new E-Golf works just fine.

      My longest drive without charging was 256km. With normal drive I can easily do 200km, what is above I have to drive a bit more carefully, but of coure this also depends on conditions (cold, heat, rain...). Normaly I do 140km per day and for that I need about 50-55% of battery (daly drive to work and back, 36km local roads, 40km highway).
