    IMPORTANT: If you backup as JPEG from ZoomNotes then handwriting searching will work as for Penultimate and Noteshelf2!!! I didn't mention this in the video!

    If you make a change in evernote does it then sync back to noteshelf?

  • @MikelManitius
    @MikelManitius 6 років тому +3

    Good information Tom. However, I find the pen/ink in Noteshelf 2 to be inferior to GoodNotes. Writing has a higher latency and the ink just looks fuzzy.
    Also, after watching your video I realized that you can accomplish almost the same thing with GoodNotes. Just export your entire notebook as images via app sharing to Evernote. This will look just like the Noteshelf 2 publish. It is not automatic, but if you just do this occasionally or when you’re finished with a notebook you now have it in Evernote for archival and search.

    • @ko3855
      @ko3855 6 років тому

      Mikel Manitius Totally agree! Handwriting experience at least on an iPad pro 9.7 is much better in GoodNotes. Latency in Noteshelf 2 is much higher so especially if you‘re writing a little bit faster the app is unusable from my point of view.

    • @paperlessmovement
      @paperlessmovement  6 років тому +1

      Hi Mikel, thanks for your comment and experience sharing! I am using the 2nd Gen iPad Pro 12.7 in and have no latency at all in Noteshelf 2. I even say it has the best handwriting feeling compared to other apps! However, good to see, it is obviously depending on the kind of device you are using. Anyway, I also have a solution for Notability users to sync with Evernote :) Stay tuned!

      Perhaps I'm not as fast a writer but I'm using Noteshelf2 on a 9.7" iPad Pro with an Apple Pencil. I think the feel is awesome, look is like pen on paper and have not noticed any latency

    Well presented Video. I was a power user of Evernote, everything I wanted, when Evernote started charging when used on more three devices. I stopped. Anyway I don’t want to take away from the video. I like this video because you discuss options for people to use which is great. I would never have thought of these combinations.

    • @paperlessmovement
      @paperlessmovement  6 років тому +1

      Thanks a lot for your comment and the positive feedback. Personally I think what Evernote is charging is ok, as they got a lot going on in the background (server structure, security development etc.) If you compare this to other note taking apps like GoodNotes, it is easier for them to charge you once for the initial buy as they don’t need to run servers etc.

    Great and helpful video. Gone back and forth among handwriting apps to use with Evernote and agree that Noteshelf2 has, by far, the best note taking "feel" and most options on pens, thickness of line, colors, etc. Actually nicer feel than writing on paper and improves my handwriting. So kudos on that. Not only does Penultimate have the shortcomings noted but writing feel is very scratchy -- as is writing on Evernote directly. But a couple shortcomings to Noteshelf that seem like easy fixes, some of which are better in Penultimate: 1. A great feature of Penultimate (and OneNote) is that the date and time are recorded with each new note created. Noteshelf Diary template kind of addresses this but still would love to have that ability. 2. Another great feature of Penultimate is that, when you have multiple notebooks,, they appear in the Evernote stack as their names in alpha order. With Noteshelf, you can create many notebooks but when synced with Evernote, they all get aggregated in a single notebook called Noteshelf. The notes are then arrayed in order of when they were updated, regardless of their Noteshelf notebook. You can search, that's nice, but you can't just flip through the pages of a single notebook on the Evernote app. 3. There is no Mac app for Noteshelf. Therefore, the only way you can take new notes is on an iPad or iPhone. And that's the only place the individual notebooks can be viewed. 4. Finally, I've had some issue where it took a while for a Noteshelf note to appear in Evernote. You first need to remember to close the notebook in Noteshelf, not merely close the app. Even then, it's sometime taken a day for the note to appear in Evernote. I'd welcome comments. If I'm wrong about any of these points, please set me straight.

      Hi Mark! First of all, thanks a lot for your great and detailed feedback! Here is are my answers to your questions:
      1. If you zoom out from your page in Noteshelf2, you see the date the page was created
      2. You can actually move the Synced notebook in Evernote wherever you want. It will still be syncing with Noteshelf2
      3. Yes...that is a shame actually. I would at least want an auto backup in PDF format to GDrive available to look at my notes this way.
      4. I heard about the syncing problems before. Thanks for clarifying that you need to close the notebook in order to get it working again!
      Thanks a lot, Mark, for being part of the #PaperlessMovement 💚💙

    • @paperlessmovement

      This is a good question and a problem many people including myself have. One solution is to focus on one main app of course. However, another approach is deep integration. So please have a look at my blog post here, it might help to understand what I mean by that: tomsolid.com/blog/app-integration-is-key/

    Thank you! I am in the process of purchasing an iPad Pro (trying to make the switch from handwriting in notebooks), and looking for note taking apps. Your video provided a lot of useful information. Two questions-- which Paper-like screen works best? Also, did you try the 10 inch iPad Pro for handwriting notes? (I am trying to decide between the 10-inch & 12 inch options.) Thanks again for the wealth of information.

      I use an iPad Pro 9.7" and the integration with the Apple Pencil and the feel of writing is awesome. Much better than Penultimate, Evernote itself, Apple Notes, etc., which are all kind of scratchy. A couple shortcoming that I address in my own post above.

    The thing that I like about OneNote and the reason that I use it over Evernote is that you can keep writing as far to be right and down as you want. Evernote allows one page only within the app itself

    Hello, may I share one issue in using noteshelf vs. penultimate with Evernote? Maybe others have similar or different experiences:
    Searching for words is more reliable if I have written the same note with penultimate than compared to noteshelf, plus the synchronisation in my case goes quicker in penultimate (probably better integration with EN..)
    But penultimate has other drawbacks also...
    How do others see that?
    Greetings from Switzerland
    Daniel

    I agree with you, however, I am one of those people when something is free and then you start charging. I say WTF, ha ha and don’t agree to pay. I agree also it is a great application. Oh well my loss. I was using Evernote to store documents when I travel, so one note does the same thing. But I will admit your video got me to rethinking. That’s why this is a excellent video, because it makes me think I could be wrong. I have come to conclusion there is not one product that is perfect. Thanks again.

    why do you take notes in landscape? Do you turn notebook paper as well?

    • @paperlessmovement
      @paperlessmovement  6 років тому +1

      Yet another advantage going paperless. Using it in landscape mode is very space saving in front of my PC. Sometimes I have to work in parallel. For letter/daily journal writing I us portrait templates but mostly write in landscape (zoomed in). However, for weekly planning and sketching, I use landscape formats. Another reason is the iPad Cover which only allows landscape position to be raised on one end. I think it comes down to personal preference. However, if new technology offers me flexibility, why not using it?

      It is a free template you can select within Noteshelf2. If it is not available, you need to download it also within Noteshelf2 it might be the case, that you need to sign up for the Noteshelf2 club in order to get this. I am not sure as I am a long term member already and cannot remember what was available without the subscription. However, it is free! 👍

      Oh this is Not changeable if you mean to change the date on each page. It is just a „PDF“ that serves as a background you can write on. Why would you need to change the date of a yearly diary book?

    Just checking: If a note is synced to Evernote, is it still adjustable in Noteshelf 2? And then it syncs again and adjust the Evernote version? And what if I adjust a Evernote version of a note? How will this appear in Noteshelf 2?

    • @paperlessmovement

    Hi Tom how about Noteshelf 2: if I write on a PDF on Noteshelf, and sync with Evernote, how does the PDF appear on Evernote iOS app?
    I’m looking for an application that shows me the PDFs inline as like as the desktop version.
    Another info: if I edit the PDF later, do the edits are synced again on Evernote?
    I ask this because I have very long documents in PDF that I read in many days.
    Thank you!

    • @paperlessmovement
      @paperlessmovement  6 років тому

      Yes, Noteshelf2 will update PDFs if you change it afterward. It stays in sync. Furthermore, PDFs are visible in Evernote like images. However, you cannot change anything from within Evernote you need to go back to Noteshelf2 to do this.

    Thinking about this a little further it occurred to me that that perhaps this (export pages as images into Evernote) would work in Notability. I really like Notability and the only thing keeping me from using it instead of GoodNotes is OCR. So if I could easily just export an entire notebook this way (as images) into Evernote then I'd be able to search them later (since Evernote performs the OCR). Sadly however, Notability does not support export as image, only as export as PDF (and two other formats that don't apply). And you've already covered in this video why PDF in Evernote is not as useful...

    • @paperlessmovement
      @paperlessmovement  6 років тому

      Hm...if you sync your notebooks to a cloud via auto backup, you could use an automation service like ITFFF or Zapier to sync those files with Evernote! I plan to cover this in another video but need to make more research about it first. :)
