Only about 15% of English native speaker know this, and it surprises them to find out every time

And anyone who is learning a second language understands the struggle, so hopefully won’t judge. I’m learning Japanese. Still rough around the edges with it, and my hope is that native Japanese speakers don’t judge me for messing up. I’m doing my best. It’s a very hard language for English speakers to learn.

You cannot do anything with "Wahercoor" Which is about as far as many people get. Stick the basic words and people can at least try. Mumble everything and repeat it louder at them and you just get annoyance. Used to live with 2 guys from El Salvador, one who spoke very little english and the other whos grasp of English was basically nonexistant. So on one hand it was me trying to figure out what the older man was attempting to tell me, and on the other it was the younger man trying to figure out what I was trying to say. On both ends we at least made sure the words we DID know were said correctly and made clear that while maybe it wasn't the exact meaning of what we were trying to say, context could be used to get there. Very rarely did we have to resort to whipping out the phones and just doing a full google translate....and a few times, a few different google translates... same thing worded differently so that google would stop messing up. Hit the key notes and the context, don't mumble, you'll go far.

Using words you both understand until you figure it out is the kindest way to still communicate.
As someone who works in retail, no. No it is not. Because it is never just one item, it is the whole conversation. Now am I upset that I was able to help them, or upset at them? Of course not, they were making a strong effort, as was I, in any of these circumstances, to communicate. But it's still frustrating, and gratitude only goes so far when going the extra mile pays the same as the others doing the bare minimum.
My brother used to work in a kitchen, with guys who spoke Spanish and very little English. My brother needed to know where the catfish was, but didn't know the Spanish word for it. However, he did know the words for cat and fish, so he asked for "pescato el gato". Which literally means "fish the cat". It took his coworkers a moment to understand and they all shared a laugh about it. In the end, my brother was able to get his catfish. Hearing how someone with another language understands and tries to communicate something they don't know. And it's fun to help them figure it out. I like seeing the satisfied face they have when I can understand what they are trying to say and help them.

Exactly! A lot of language teachers on social media do this kind of content, but they (almost) always sound condesending, I don't know why, but I always get those vibes, and as a teacher and a learner myself, I think it makes learners loose interest. This was sooo refreshing to see.
I worked in retail customer service for many years, and we're very used to helping people who don't speak much English. It's no problem at all. We're used to helping non-English speakers, disabled people, and we also help very rude people. All kinds of people lol. We would rather help someone nice who doesn't speak English rather than someone who can speak English but is mean 😂
Helping someone improve their fluency makes me so happy. Taking time to get their food order right. Also helping with things like cash and coins while not rushing.

I love this. Honestly, there have been times I've forgotten words in my own language and just mashed other words together. Some of those words/phrases have stuck.
I feel like native speakers often have to do this for each other for random words and names, too. Gestures and descriptions really help and it's really rewarding to guess the right thing. I feel like not a day goes by that either I need someone to fill in the word for me or I for someone else.

Exactly! A lot of language teachers on social media do this kind of content, but they (almost) always sound condesending, I don't know why, but I always get those vibes, and as a teacher and a learner myself, I think it makes learners loose interest. This was sooo refreshing to see.
I worked in retail customer service for many years, and we're very used to helping people who don't speak much English. It's no problem at all.
We're used to helping non-English speakers, disabled people, and we also help very rude people. All kinds of people lol. We would rather help someone nice who doesn't speak English rather than someone who can speak English but is mean 😂

yeah this approach would work decently well in german in general, like sometimes it would just be the actual word and even when it is not it might still be a valid if unusual word.

I love this. Honestly, there have been times I've forgotten words in my own language and just mashed other words together. Some of those words/phrases have stuck.

I feel like native speakers often have to do this for each other for random words and names, too. Gestures and descriptions really help and it's really rewarding to guess the right thing. I feel like not a day goes by that either I need someone to fill in the word for me or I for someone else.
