  • I thought a chicken had gotten out of the pen because the rooster was crowing a lot - almost non-stop so I went to investigate and this is what I caught on camera! This will be taken care of pretty quickly -

+Jeff Obrien - Its getting really tiresome finding all of these predators trying to get the animals; especially so close to the house so I think that I am going to introduce them to Browning, or Ruger and if I am close enough, Mr. S. Wesson! LOL - We ended up contacting a trapper a friend recommended on the coyote issue but they haven't been out yet - We just want them to stay away from the house and of course, the livestock. With us backing to the state land, we get trespassers that cant read so Im hesitant to do anything but shoot them (predators not the trespassers!)- They are way tOo close for comfort! Thanks for the info though; who knows, we may end up employing it if this stuff keeps up or I can't shoot them :-)

My way is effective might not be the most humane but it gets the job done. I raise Whitetails and coyote used to be a problem

+Jeff Obrien - Your way is quite common - I had the friend that recommended the trapper tell me the same thing. They shoot them when they can because they come up for their turkey and rabbits. If it comes down to it, we will have to go that route. I would prefer to just shoot them tho. :-)

I've been very fortunate as far as predators go. I free ranged until the Hawks killed a couple. Then I added a big run and keep them in it and so far,no more losses. Hope you can get run off.

+BCtruck, rebuild, repair, repurpose - It seems that everything likes Chicken for Dinner! When we first moved in, I was letting the chickens free-range until the neighbors dog ripped the tail feathers out one of the hens so we fenced them in to a large 80' x 80' pen; Then we lost a hen and a duck to hawks so I tried the fishing line & Cd's; A hawk came in and grabbed some tail feathers with the fishing line so then I covered the entire run area with deer netting and that stopped the overhead assaults - ( Now the hawks just do fly-overs!) The raccoon come out at night but cannot get into the coop - yet. Now with the coyote and fox, they have just been trying to figure out how to grab one I guess - what I'm really concerned about is: 1) The coyote's are way too close to the house and have taken down a deer in our yard already and 2)That fox was only about 75' from the house during the day as well. I called the Natural Resource Office and I found out what I can do so I guess they may be meeting Mr. Ruger or possibly Mrs. Browning! I hope all is well in your neck of the woods! Take Care. :-)

Thats a good size fox too. This is why I have been hesitant to have chickens. We live on the edge of a huge field. I would probably spend more time beating back predators than collecting eggs. :-)

+Ladyshystar - We too back up to State Land so it's like living on predator highway! (See my post to BCTruck) Having chickens is well worth the issues that pop up - at least thus far it has been! Thanks for stopping by & taking the time to comment! :-)

+BacktoBasics Gal Always my pleasure. I plan on moving this Spring. It will be a more wooded area. We will probably give it a try then. I have a friend and she does really well with her chickens there. They free range during the day and the hawks seem to leave them alone.

+Ladyshystar - We let the hens out when we are working in the yard - I hated to fence them in but it was for their own safety - We are moving the coop this spring back farther so they will have more cover from the trees and a larger area than 80x80 - It seems we just have to constantly pay attention and come up with solutions. I do love the fresh, golden eggs so it is worth the hassle! Again, Thank You and have a great weekend!
