- The Shield Maiden - Part 1: The Face
We know that many of you have waited a LONG time for this video - and here it finally is: Ben Komets paints the Nuts Planet Shield Maiden.
In part 1 Ben shows you how to paint the face of this 1/10 female bust and how to create smooth blendings using wet-in-wet and loaded brush techniques while achieving an adequate level of contrast for this beautifully sculpted female face.

I’m loving this series
How they mass produce such an incredibly detailed item is beyond me. As others have been saying, it's akin to a classical piece of marble sculpture. Take it into a gallery and see what they make of it!
And, of course, professionally painted as always. Excellent work!
The secret is, they don't mass produce, +Nortic111. I know the guys from Nutsplanet pretty well and their production and quality control are complete manual processes. Benny Sa, the owner of Nutsplanet and myself strongly believe that only the highest quality is good enough for you. When it comes to casting, I know only of a few companies that reach Nutsplanet's quality.
Plus, they are super-nice guys - absolutely useless in water-pistol fights though :D
Painting Buddha Ha ha, OK gotcha. It shows that they care about having a superior product.
hehe how can this model not be beautiful, it's Katherine Winnick as Lagertha. She is ridiculously beautiful, as is your work here. Thank you for these videos.
I went to a model expo yesterday and saw some of these busts, i'm really inspired by this painting tutorial and i love the Viking series, i think i'm going to try and paint this soon.
Thats an incredible finish. Very talented dude
IMPRESSIVE AS USUAL.. MASTER KOMETSSSS!!!!
Thank you +Ivan C!
I used to watch this over and over when I got back into painting, it was like sitting outside a class trying to pick up tips. Came back today and understand every word, every concept. I'm delighted! Still novice, but this is progress!
Best video I've seen on the subject. your work is amazing. Vallejo paint is good to eat?? 😅 why slip the brush in the mouth? Thank you
Muy bueno. Fantastico. Muy natural
Hi guys! Only just discovered your channel, and am loving the videos! Do you have a vid demonstrating the way you undercoat in black and white buy any chance?
Part 2 is up: We only got EYES for YOU :D
bit.ly/nuts-maiden-part-02
Very cool Im actually painting this for a client as we speak Im airbrushing my Skintones though
Her face looks more like a Classical era statue than a real face. But I kind of prefer that look! Something very eerie, but stoic about it. Beauty in a different way.
The face is not complete in Part 1 yet, +Jason Colbeck. She receives a face-lift in part 3 - I am editing that right now!
+Painting Buddha I meant the way her face looked before painting. Sorry, should have clarified that. :)
Ah, gotcha +Jason Colbeck :D
Part 3 - Facelift comes out tomorrow already - it's rendering now ;)
I've been waiting with such anticipation for this tutorial. I always wanted to see Ben address skin tones. His method and teaching style are amazing and the nutsplanet bust is the perfect display piece. Thank you. Guys if you're not a Patreon supporter, get over there! Let's keep supporting so Paintingbuddha can keep making videos like this!
Thank you so much, +SacramentOfCarnage!
I have to admit that just editing this video is an absolute joy - even if the total time that went into the 45 minutes of part one goes towards 15 hours of work - incredible when you think about it :)
SacramentOfCarnage I want support them , but my problem is I’m a good scale modeler at usual. But in paint of bigger figures over 1 /35 or this bust I’m not really a good artist. I really want also a lot of bust for my fantasy and history scale collection.i whould give them the bust for tutorials for UA-cam plus I pay the materials and paints plus a not too expensive salary. But I want to get the bust or figures for my personal collection to display.
Part 1 is uploaded - 1080p resolution should be available in a few minutes (or whenever UA-cam gets to it :P).
We hope you like this new series of Nutsplanet's Shield Maiden!
Thank you all for SHARING & ENJOYING! :)
The Viking Modelkit
Amazing work and it's so much fun to follow along. You're a great artist and ISLHY!
Hmm Titanium hhhWhite. Bob Ross is proud of you guys. :D
Do you seal your work as you go along with a dull coat? Do you not pick up paint off the surface with a wet brush?
Fantastic work, and all the tips (written and spoken) to explain what is going on are a godsend. Thank you! Both inspiring and educational.
Thank you so much, +savethefunk! If you could think of ways how we can make our videos even better, let us know!
Fantastic! How did you do the black & white foundation layer please?
It's called zenithal highlighting. There are many videos on the subject. Basically, you apply the black primer coat as usual, then spray white from the top (or whichever angle the imagined light is coming from).
Do you have a video for how you do the undercoating here please?
Great video! So, stupid question time - if you're using this loaded brush technique and you don't fancy licking the brush all the time (can't be healthy!) what's the alternative? Can't stick it in the water pot if the brush is loaded, so what to do - a wet sponge or something?
+RobertSE6 - Ben only licks the brush to remove all paint from it ('clean the brush'). if the brush is loaded and you have too much paint on the tip which you want remove you simply wipe it off on your hand.
Hi - this is an amazing seires but I have a query about the first step; priming. Was this a simple black all overspray with a 'zenithal' white highlight?
I've watched a ton of videos on figure painting and this by far is the best for those of us just getting into figure painting. I love that everything is in real time and that everything is explained so clearly. Thanks for the knowledge. I'll have to pick her up and then follow along with your videos. Simply awesome. Thanks.
Ben, i want to thank you, for share your art. Im from far far away, and here i have to do all alone, with your master class i made a huge diference in my paint.
Many thanks again.
Where are you from +rocco0007? And thank you :)
+Painting Buddha im from argentina. but here dont have feedback of nothing. learn alone its very dificult. but again thanks to you and other youtubers make a diference.
Fantastic as always. I'm always amazed at how much I can pick up from these videos and translate into my own painting. It isn't often the case with most of the painting instructional videos I've seen. These have been a real help. Thank you.
Thank you, +Galen Osier! It is great to hear that because that is how we design our videos. We can't always paint exactly the same model that someone has sitting at his or her desk - but the techniques we show are applicable to all kinds of projects. I'm glad that they are helpful for you :)
is that primed with an air brush?
He said airbrush is for base coating, in another comment
Hi are you still posting painting figures and busts on your channel cheers
Very detailed tutorial, wonderful! Really inspiring video.
But one question still bothers me: do you use any retarder or smth. like that? Or just paint and water?
Hey +Alexey Kazakov,
we only use water. In our Fernando Ruiz video (available exclusively in our Painting Buddha Academy), Fernando uses retarders. It's a preference, really.
OK, so I've been watching for 18 minutes and think this is one of the most helpful videos showing how to paint figures...can't wait to watch the rest of this series!!
Well done guys!!!!
Hi Thanks for the wonderful video. I will start using some of your advice on my next figure that I paint. Please can you tell me where I can purchase the Shield Maiden figure. Again many thanks!
Very impressive paintwork. Any tips on how human skin colors convert to ork or troll? Keep up the good work guys!
Hey +Warpainting tutorials.
Well, mostly they don't :D We'll start releasing an ork video next week though (Papa Jambo of Big Child Creatives) - among other mischievous things - and that will answer many of your greenskin related questions :D
For me, as a total beginner, it would help a lot to have the colors used on the palette (and the brand) actually printed in text on the video. The slight accent and very soft voice made understanding difficult for me and my bad ears. Then, as you apply different color mixes and load a brush, it would be great to have that printed on the video for 10 to 15 seconds or so. Much of the success depends on the brush and how it's used and I found myself asking, "what color was that? did he use a clean brush to apply that water?" Brief text would be invaluable.
Roger Felton Hey dude, I used to think like that, but really, it's not about the colours, it's about the technique. You could totally watch this video and use it to paint an Indian or Asian girl, OR use only primary colours and make all your colours from scratch. Once you have you his blending mode down, you won't even be consciously thinking about the colours, you'll just be choosing and selecting what 'looks right' to you. All the best in your painting adventures :)
Are the paints toxic though, surely can't taste that nice either haha why do you lick the brush?
I have to say a HUGE thank you for these tutorials.
Your work is absolutely amazing. I can spend hours and hours watching the same video. I've greatly improve my painting skill thanks to you. Now I'm able to compete in local community, with much higher quality minis.
Undoubtly, the best tutorials I could find on the web. I would like to support you much more, I hope in a upcoming future.
Thank you for your kind words, +Thierry CATRAIN!
We get a lot of messages like yours - and people send us pics of them winning their local competitions :D
It honestly makes us a little bit proud!
Fantastic Ben, thank you for sharing your knowledge with us :-)
+Hans Urbaner, Share & Enjoy is our company motto ;)
Hi guys, hope you are doing well.
I was wondering if there will be painting 101 tutorials for complete beginners. I think those videos would get a lot of views as there are a lot of people who are beginners and want to get in to the hobby.
Regards,
Kris
Hey +Kris Martinsons!
Yes, there will be. To be honest, it was planned for November - but we are so busy with shows and videos right now that it looks like we'll start that series in January. Material has already been filmed, graphics are done, but we need time to finalize some other tasks (and I need to do my taxes in December :D)
great vid as always ( but i wish you would stop licking paint filled brushes while my son watches )
Yeah, +Colin Wilson, we tried many times to keep Ben from doing that. If anything it's a bad habbit we can't break ;)
Many painters (including myself) brush-lick, but of course we do not want to promote that.
While the paints we use are all harmless and non-toxic, brush-licking it is definitely not something we encourage, nor is it required to be a good painter. Kirill Kanaev, for example, does not lick his brushes. In his words "brush-licking is a myth" ;)
Yes. Confirm you are Painting Buddha, Indeed!!!
Thanks a lot one more time for your tutorial. I also really appreciate your choice to show brush techniques for people who doesn't have/want an airbrush.
Yeah, we have tons of airbrushes here but often times can't be bothered to use them as the overhead needed for painting normal miniatures is just so big, +Thomas Vandaele. I personally like the airbrush for basecoating and of course for vehicles and stuff.
I'm curious! How do manage to keep the paint in the wetpallete so well mixed? Why doesn't it separate? And how many parts water to paint do you use?
On the palette the paint is not very much diluted, +magnus B. If Ben needs a glaze, he adds the water right before he picks up the paint.
We do not believe in any ratios for water:paint - but we are preparing an in depth Buddha Basics video on one of the most important things about miniature painting: Color consistency - we're a little behind schedule on these videos, but then again, we want to get them right ;) Soon(tm)
Beautiful job!! I was wondering if there was a list of the paints that you used anywhere.. I'd like to try it just as you did it.. Thanks for the great videos!
good
the white used can I use a craft color -titanium white instead of your white also I have a Reaper Miniature- Master Piece Model of a Female Knight can I use the same colors for it ?
+Marc Yablon, you can use any white you want. The important part for the loaded brush technique is that the tip color is thicker in consistency than the back color.
this channel has gone COLD.
Hi, just to now, have you any tutorial about how to make a palette colors because the part is not really explain so....big thanks
Its 30 degrees celcius here... no matter what i do I can't get my paint to flow like that. It either ends up so thin its running everywhere with little coverage or drying almost instantly. Is the loaded brush just not gonna happen for me in my current conditions? Amazing videos, I watch them over and over.
Alright, I am not even learning anything right now. I started watching this here at work and had it as background noise but got caught up in work so much that I couldn't pay attention and the soft melodies in the background and you two speaking softly is very relaxing. It's like a toned down gregarian chant going on in the background. So cool.
I will have to restart this when I get home but the model looks great! I'll be hitting up that Patreon page of yours here soon.
Amazing! Thank you!
No, you are amazing, +Pablo Le Moyne! Thank YOU!
Thank you all for SHARING & ENJOYING! :)I just got one
+Alan Glover - Perfect! Show us what you did!
facebook.com/paintingbuddha
This video is awesome. I am about to start Nutzplanet Queen of Dragons and the skin technique is exactly what I needed
Hi there. Quick question, is that a wet pallette you are using.
Yes, it is +binbagflyer!
I'm loving this series of painting! Please, I take it you are using acrylics, but what make of paint?
who the fuck downvoted this? is awesome
Great video! Love the figure. What TV show are you guys talking about? I would love to watch it as well. Thanks!
Great! I will check it out. That is if I can find out where and what network is showing it. Thank you very much! love your videos. When are we going to see more great videos again?
Thank you I will do that. I would love to see it.
His palette.....is even better looking than any of my minis
I would sell you some of his dried palette papers, +Justin Kenna!
We are THAT desperate :D
Shit is that Lagertha from vikings? Awesome stuff
Our legal department says that you must be mistaken, +i0puri. It's a nameless shield maiden :P
Thanks. I will review it again.
agains looking forward too all the episodes :)I was on SMC2015 this year and wanted to buy that model but they were out of stock :(
+Benoit Vanderzippe, I am working with Nutsplanet on a special deal.
hhhmmmzzzzzz nice ;) that can be interesting :)
+Painting Buddha ,do tell! Any guesses on when you'll have details? I was just getting ready to start shopping for this bust. Recently found you here on the Tube and this series has inspired me to try figure painting! Amazing work!
Its Lagerta from Vikings? Btw stunning work as always.
+Alexander Pupkin I guess for legal reasons it is not Lagertha, but an unknown Shield Maiden :P
Painting Buddha
Ok i get it.
that is a beautiful bust, edit: what's the music at the end? thanks
+Jason Villafranca, the music is linked in the description (and the video credits :P)
You can buy it here: "Krummi" by Valravn on iTunes: bit.ly/valravn
Greetings from Texas. I just found your videos and I am very impressed.
Can we get more long form paint videos like this? Haha, it is really great to have this as reference for an entire project.
Why you painted only the face with the base flesh color? The neck?
the title is face painting
shame they DONK tell you the paints used and number at each stage
Has anyone got a full paint list for this series from start to finish? Thanks :)
This is the best tutorial i have seen to date. Excellent dialogue and I like that you put the camera on the palette so we could see how much paint is used and how it is blended.
What color is the company paint and what is the name of the paint?
thank god this paint is non toxic xD
It's also good that it doesn't taste like Nutella, +Justin Kenna :D
Justin Kenna Not toxic but not healty.
Thank you very much for the video!!
Thank YOU very much for your comment! +Dunker79
hi.
What type and brand of paint you use?
Hey +Adnan Değirmenci - the paints are all fully listed in the videos. We basically use all types: mostly Vallejo but also GW, P3, Army Painter... Whatever has pigments, really.
inrelated?? that is lagatha from thé viking series
amazing, i love this sculpt, who sculpted it? I saw this on putty and paint website , good work! thanks for this, dig the layout with the pallet and the portrait.
Lagather!!!!!!!!!!!
Hi,I am Kevin ,and i got a question, how did you paint the color so smoothly ,when i paint my figures the color are always so shiny ,i use vallejo color,so is that some skill to make it so smooth?Great thank,i beg you plz help me T.T many thanks
i try to make research on internet but still fail to fix it.
I've been waiting for this. :)
Part 2 is already uploading, +Kuneho Ako - you won't have to wait long for the remaining parts!
Awesome as always Ben, I'll go and stamp on mine and start again lol
Haha, +Bigusmickus! That might work, but better options are buying a second one and painting that one. Then compare the results and see your progress :D
+Painting Buddha Already have another on order, I cheated with my last using the dedicated wood and leather paint set from Vallejo, saves having to mix your own paints, helpful as she was my first bust started this year, now on bust number 9, Ben's work is an inspiration and have even tried loaded brush and primer pre shading on the current project, Nuts Planet Pirate Fury who may or may not resemble Hector Barbossa from Pirates of the Caribbean
Which type of colors are u using?
My question is can you do this technique on 1/35th figures I am trying to find a new style so I can have better faces need to find what is easiest for me!
I would paint the eye first
The amount of detail on this figure is mindblowing
Wuauuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuu!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
thk u for sharing :)
+arboretum valley Thank you for commenting :D
Fascinating. Most excellent.
Can I ask how you applied the black/white basecoat to get the result you ended up with?
Great video's!
+Koen Roovers From the looks of the pattern of paint on the basecoat, it looks to me like they kind of covered the whole model with a grey primer, then spray painted black from the underneath the model, to preshade the shadows, and then spray white from above the model, preshading the highlights. Judging from the paint spatter, they used spray cans for the application. An airbrush would not give you the 'rough' paint spatter texture you see on the video. Also don't spray too close when applying the whites and blacks. I hope that helps.
+JohnnyB It does help :) thank you. I got as far as the black/white spraycans.. but my mind couldn't think of the step to start with the grey :p.
bellissimo video,complimenti.
Awesome
What kind of primer You use?
Fancy meeting you here....
Definately Lagerthar
Pssssst, +RawrJustJames! :D
Love the model, you guys are amazing at what you do.
I didnt watch whole video, anybody know what kind of paint does he use? Are those acrylic paints?
I have a question with the loaded bush is the base colour thinner than the colour on the tip?
Yes, +rethonn! that is a very important part. The reason here is that you want to avoid that the colors mix in the brush (which happens if they are both thin). The result would be a dirty brush, not a loaded brush :D
Awesome Video. What a wonderful Shield Maiden
