I have a rubber tree, that I kept from my mom’s funeral (2007) & this year I decide to take cuttings from it & propagate it. I have 4 rooted & in pots. Looking forward to them growing to the size of the mother plant. They are very pretty houseplants & live a long life.
This was so helpful! I have a burgundy and it hasn’t been growing. I honestly bought it on a whim for it’s beauty without knowing much about the plant. Seeing this video leaves me more confident that I can save it and now take care of it! You’ve got yourself a new subscriber!
Hi there! I am happy for you. Good luck on your Burgundy. I have a two tinekes myself. Also, it terma of growth, I believe rubber trees are really slow growers and as he mentioned, his tineke has grown from small to the size in the video "in the past years" :)
Thank you for putting this information together! I just finished my own little experiment with three rubber tree (purple one)leaves. I put two leaves in a clear jar with water to propagate. The third leaf I put in a white plastic cup from a restaurant. The clear was barely showing anything. The plastic cup had two inch root on the leaf. I potted that one. The two left I kept one in clear and the other back in that white cup. One week later there was no roots in clear jar and about an inch of roots on the leaf in white cup. Perhaps clear glass is not the way to go for rooting up leaves. Perhaps they would eventually root but maybe the roots don't like all the light coming through. Maybe you could do a official rooting experiment. I just love plants and flowers! I find all of creation just an amazing gift from God our Creator!
I didn’t realize how beautiful that plant is. We have that tree here in my home and has been a tree since I was born. Now its drying and dying.. :( People are cutting it without our permission and making a profit out of it. Now I’m determined to save our tree... its been in our home for like 3 generations thats why its really big.. and its rare in our place no wonder people come to our home just to cut its branches.. I used to play with its leaves and write on it when I was a child... I didn’t really see how beautiful it is until it is slightly dying... but I know there is still hope. Thank you for this video I am very motivated.
if it's tree generations old, it's probably dying due to old age. if you want to save it, you should probably take cuttings like everyone else, and propagate it. after all, those are genetically identical to the original tree so that is "saving it"
Just purchased a Burgundy tonight for my birthday and my neurotic brain told me I wouldn't be able to keep it alive. This video makes it looks super easy, though. 🥰 I think I'll be okay now.
Thank you for sharing this! My old rubber tree got stressed and dropped a lot of its lower leaves and I've been wanting to propagate some of it just in case and to create new plant babies from my original guy. You make this look so easy, thank you!
Best best best rubber tree video I’ve seen ❤️ Someone gifted me a fresh cutting and put it in soil. I’m taking it out and putting it in water like you said. Thanks!
Thanks! I was inspired and cut my plant that was getting too tall and only had leaves at the top. I added some ground coffee to the soil and left the base of the plant in the sun for a few days and after about 10 days I have a new plant!
Oh my I wish I should have seen your video long time ago! You saved me for not throwing my rubber plants. They are not a cheap plants that’s why I’ve been wanting to save them. I will definitely follow your advice. I will repot my burgundy rubber plant and propagate. Thanks so much for sharing your video! You are the BEST!

Such a pleasure to watch this video! Your energy is a blessing! The love for these plants is just flowing through your face and words! I'll now go and share it with my baby ficus that I'm about to repot😊😊 Thank you so much!!!❤
My burgundy ficus elastica is my pride and joy. I got him as a baby about 2 years ago, and now he's over 4 feet tall. Like yours, he's more bush like, and he puts out new leaves weekly. I have a baby ruby that I'm excited to watch grow too.
Tried this a month ago. They’re in water right now and doing well! Thanks for the guidance. What’s the update on your stem propagations from water to soil? What do they look like now?! :)
I was able to get a cutting of this plant yesterday (101523) and i'm just so excited to propagate hopefully several or at least one to survive so that I can have my very own ficus elastica burgundy. One of my neighbors have this tall lush tree in their front garden and I've been admiring it every time I pass by. Since then I've been longing to have this plant and I got one from our Church. Looking forward to grow this and will follow everything you said. Thank you so much. I was following Drunken Homemaker and she referred you in that video so I checked yours out...I am now confident where to cut. I was just planning to plant the entire stem cutting with 6 leaves in it in one go at first. But based on both your videos having a much shorter cuttings would have a higher success rate.
I have exactly the same ficus , your preferred. Love it, so beautiful in tricolor. I got at Costco standing aloneabd unique in the middle of the warehouse abandoned from a customer who changed mind buying. Its mine now, growing strong, healthy and beautiful. Perfect like a plastic plant. I mist it daily, not water. I mist all my house plants to avoid accident over watering
Loved the video! I just propagated my burgundy rubber plant a few days back and I can already see roots developing in the cuttings... such exciting times! 😀
Your ficuses (ficii?) are breathtakingly gorgeous. Their leaves are astounding. I often comment on ficus elastica videos because these plants irritate the heck out of my eyes and make them red and itchy and give me asthma too. When I started suffering from these symptoms, I knew it had to be something new in the environment. I put the two ficuses outside and cleaned around the house, and problem gone in about 2 weeks. Something to do with the natural rubber/latex I guess. I even start to itch when I pass clusters of them in shops because the particles are airborne. Just thought I'd mention it in case someone is your viewers' environments are suffering from mysterious red/itchy eyes and breathing probs. I donated the plants to a new home. I still miss how beautiful they were. Never had a reaction to any other plants - not even dumb canes or English ivy (2 other plants that I banished while trying to find the allergy, but have since welcomed back).
Oh wow. Thanks for sharing that info, I never thought about the latex and reaction. Im sure you missed them and know that they’re being loved and cared for. 🙂

Thank you for this! I inherited a burgundy from a funeral years ago. While it was healthy & very tall (over 4ft) it required heavy support. I had never thought to prune it. It has been heavily pruned now to a more stable height. Fingers crossed it takes it well and continues to thrive.
Great information. I have one that needs repotting & I wanted to make sure I did it correctly. Mine is a burgundy one. I’ve already propagated one, but have never repotted the one I’ve had for 2yrs. Thanks
This is my first spring with most of my plants. None of them totally stopped growing over the winter so I thought their growth rate was just the norm, but boy was I wrong! Now that it's spring, some of my plants have just exploded, including my burgundy rubber tree!! The newest leaf is bigger than any of the others by far, and the new leaf spike just keeps getting taller and taller and isn't even starting to open yet. SO exciting!!!
I love your plants. They're so healthy!!! Sad I was not successful in my propagation. Bought cuttings only. That plant is so costly where I live. I've given up having that plant but after watching this, I think I'll reconsider buying again. Thanks for sharing😊. I'm your new subscriber now.
I strongly recommend going to your local Trader Joe's as soon as they open to see if they have any. Today I scored a Burgandy Ficus Elastica with 4 different stems for only $5.99!
I inherited a 6-foot tall scragley ficus robusta about 3 years ago. I tidied it up and propegated about 5 different pieces. Only one took though but is now about 3 foot tall and I’m getting a new huge leaf almost every other week. By the way, I live in Chicago and this was my first attempt with a rubber plant/bush/tree. I’ve got 3 other plants that are over 25 years old including a peace lily and an umbrella tree. I’ve killed my almost 20-year old asparagus fern at least a dozen times and it still keeps coming back.
Omg I'm so jealous of your string of hearts!! Its absolutely stunning, I hope mine grows like that one day! I try and untangle and keep it looking nice but yours is on a whole new level!! 🥰 and I love your rubber plants mines still a little baby but its growing well so far.
I love how in depth you go into your explanations, you answer every question that pops up in my head, it’s insane! Thank you for great plant content 🥰🌱
Thank you! Very nice video, you answered all my questions about ficus elastica 😄 i go and propagate my new tineke now, I love it, but it has bent a lot in a shop, AND I can make more plants with it 🙃💞 now i need few more pots and a shelf 😄
Man, I am so jealous! I've had a ficus elastica ruby for almost two years now and it has grown like 5 leaves at most (and much smaller than the previous ones). At first I had kept it in its original pot, which was too small and couldn't retain water, so I guessed that was the reason, but after I repotted it (it's been more than a year now) nothing much changed.. It grows like 3 leaves each summer and then stops. Plus, its old leaves are still droopy from when it used to be in its nursery pot. It's in front of a south facing window, so it gets bright light, but no direct sunlight. For a small period I put it outside during the summer to get sunlight, but it was probably too much and some leaves got burnt and it lost all its pink too, so I put it back indoors.. I also fertilize it every now and then, but I don't know what else to do. It was so pretty when I bought it, but now it looks droopy and sad and DOESN'T GROW, lol!
I'm attempting to propagate a couple of leaves from my tineke with your help! The plant was obviously a cutting from a really big plant once upon time as the leaves are ginormous, I adore it, but it's just been an unhappy plant the whole time I've had it and it's turning south quickly. Fingers crossed these cuttings root!
Thank you for the wonderful information! Now I know everything I did wrong to propagate my Burgundy 🙃. I might have to start all over. Was hoping to get it to be like yours, bushy so I cut the top out and the part I cut out I just stuck in water instead of cutting into several 😫. Really enjoyed your help on these.
I hold the world record for fastest Ficus Elastica propagation. I buy brand new ones when they go on sale at Home Depot. I'm not the world's most patient man.
Thank you sooo very much! I have been wanting to repot and propage my Fucus Burgundy as well. So glad I was going thru my UA-cam subscriptions and saw this one
It's very informative. I really wish to have one burgundy in my house but it's really expensive in the flower store. Everytime I go there, I was just looked at them. Maybe one day I will have it in God's time🙏
Thanks for all the info! Just started my porch container garden about five months ago. Love my Ruby and Burgundy, and they've nearly tripled in size. So I was curious if they were ready to graduate from 6" to some 8" pots. But I guess they can wait til next spring then. Have a cute Tineke too, but she's the latest addition and quite small compared to her older sisters.
I just followed your instructions to save my tineke. I hope it works. Thank you so much for this video and all the others, I really enjoy your channel . Keep up the great videos!
I think the Tineke is fine? I've been told that Ficuses like to be pot bound to an extent, kind of like how they are in nature as trees. Also maybe the roots you saw were aerial roots? When ficus elastics receive bright light they tend to produce aerial roots which means they're very "happy". Oh and I'm finding from experience that Tinekes can be very sensitive especially when repotted when they aren't ready for it yet because their top leaves turn yellow and drop lol happened to mine. Re small leaves, I'm finding that sometimes, the new growth is small and at times, the new growth is big but usually after two weeks. the small growth catches up to the size of the older leaves and becomes just as big.
wimbletone Yes very true that they like to be a bit snug in their container, my Ruby did well in those conditions until it got to a point where it just wasn’t growing anymore. The Tineke could probably have been ok in the same container for another year, but I wanted to add a bit depth in the container because it will most likely stay in this new one forever and that way where I cut the top next season to promote branching I won’t need to repot it for a while. 😊
@@CrazyPlantGuy in Sydney, Australia there is a native ficus that is growing between bricks on an old building. It's never grown tall. Just a bushy plant about 2 feet tall. It's been there for many many years.lol. Ficus are amazing and so hardy. This old little plant probably started out from a bird poop after the bird enjoyed the fruit. 😘
I got an awesome little burgundy from Etsy a couple of months ago. It's got 5 little stalks. $13 + shipping. It's great. So if you're looking, Etsy is my favorite plant shop

Great Video as always. Ficus elastica is also one of our favorite plants👍🏾👍🏾
Watching this video has answered my ?s ... Thank You!!! 😊😊😊😊
I enjoy how I gain so much ideas and knowledge from the first video I ran into today. Thank you sir.
Great. Glad you find the videos helpful. 😊
So nice... Thnx for the information. There's a huge one growing by the bank and i took a cutting tonight 😊 hopefully my 6 cuttings grow roots 😊
I just followed your instructions to save my tineke. I hope it works. Thank you so much for this video and all the others, I really enjoy your channel . Keep up the great videos!
Amazing video ! Very helpful and well made ! Thanks for sharing 🙌🏼
um loving watching this keep up the good work buddy
I was wondering about this also. I thought these liked more root binding than that but maybe not all?
Same, my ficus is not at all root bound and it has those roots on the soil surface, was told it helps them absorb oxygen.
wimbletone Yes very true that they like to be a bit snug in their container, my Ruby did well in those conditions until it got to a point where it just wasn’t growing anymore. The Tineke could probably have been ok in the same container for another year, but I wanted to add a bit depth in the container because it will most likely stay in this new one forever and that way where I cut the top next season to promote branching I won’t need to repot it for a while. 😊
Crazy Plant Guy i think you need to add the Shivereana to your ficus elastica collection!
Such a helpful video! Thank you!!
I just love your string of harts I wish I had a Burgundy one just love it great video
How did I not notice that chain of hearts 🤣 Looks amazing doesn’t it! 😍
I got an awesome little burgundy from Etsy a couple of months ago. It's got 5 little stalks. $13 + shipping. It's great. So if you're looking, Etsy is my favorite plant shop

Thanks for the technique demonstration to propagate Ficus elastica.
Thank you for this video. I've learned a lot about propagating the rubber tree. Can you give me the right potting mix soil for the rubber plant? Thank you. 🤗
