  • Here's a quick & snappy process for painting people in watercolor! 😁
The process is a relatively straightforward approach:
    1. First LIGHT wash - Let all colors mix freely. Use SATURATED colors.
    2. Shadows wash - Paint the shadows as if they are one big shape.
Use more neutral, gray versions of the previous colors.
Enjoy this one! And let me know in a comment if you have any questions ^_^

I love these shorts. Sometimes I won’t click on a video because it seems too long or involved. But when I am mindlessly scrolling sometimes all it takes is a few seconds and I am all of a sudden inspired and motivated. Much appreciated and beautiful work as always. I love how confident your brush strokes are. I am working on that for myself but watching you work is very helpful.

So today I tried to mute my colors and used like purple and dark blue on a cow for the shadows instead of just actual black. This because your palette inspired me to do so, and I ended with a bit of a hot mess but, I'll try again tomorrow and perhaps I'll nail it.

I'm getting more confidence on using watercolor after watching your videos. I just randomly got watercolor as my first art medium aside from pencil some time ago and was totally lost on how to use it. 😂

Good stuff. Something that threw me off for a long time is the classic adage of "shadows are less saturated."
It's not wrong, it's just not all the information. Simply put, shadows are less saturated, midtones are most saturated, and hightones are typically least saturated.
I had it in my head that shadows are less saturated, so saturation must be correlated with light exposure. More light=more saturation, right? For most situations, no.
Basically, a completely unlit object would be totally desaturated due to not reflecting any light. So at first, the more light that hits it and it reflects, the more colorful it will appear, and therefore the more saturated it will be. BUT, for general lighting conditions, due to most light sources being a combination of many wavelengths, at some point when enough light illuminates the object, it begins to then DESATURATE the color - like the light is washing it away.
Another way to see it: Black vs (color) vs white. Of the three, which are most saturated? Well, black and white are of 0 saturation, and (color) is of 100% saturation. So then, what is darkest and lightest? Black is darkest, white is lightest, and (color) is between them. Therefore, as colors get darker, they get desaturated, and as they get lighter, they get desaturated.
By studying images, real and artistic, I found that shadows tend to be MORE saturated than high tones, but less saturated than midtones.
The most notable exception is when the light has color. In this case, surfaces cannot become brighter than the light-color. This can make images with a pure-color light pretty challenging.
But a more practical example is with natural lighting when the sun is low. The sunlight will be warm, usually an orangey yellow, but quite desaturated still. You'll find this type of light may saturate objects of similar color, and more dramatically desaturate objects of dissimilar color. An orange in this light would be quite vivid, but blueberries might appear gray.
Basically, the more light that hits an object, the more that object's color will take on properties of the light. If the object is in agreement with the light's color, it is resistant to the light's desaturating effects. The more the object is complementary to the light's color, the more the object will be desaturated - more so than just white light. In fact, in theory, if an object was completely... red, for instance, and it was struck with pure green light, (of green wavelength, not of yellow+red light), the red object, exposed to no red light, would therefore not reflect any light, and would appear black.
If the red object was on a white table, and was struck with white light, you would clearly see the red object, and the white table. Under red light, the red object would be intensely red, and the white table would be desaturated red. Under a green light, the red object would be black, and the white table would be desaturated green. The table would appear lighter under green light, and darker under red light.
Anyway, light tends to desaturate dramatically above midtones, shadow desaturates much slower below midtones.
