Every Kpop stan can remember the single moment they got sucked into this circus… probs the moment when you try learning the members name then all of a sudden you know their blood type.
I can recognize the members by their hands now... All I wanted to know was their names
It literally took one blackpink documentary to win me over and I did not resist bestie
omg yes !! for me it was when i happened to be on a korean airlines flight (i had a layover in south korea otw to a diff place) and i spent the entire 12 hr flight listening to exo’s growl using the airline’s playlist (they had just debuted at that time)
it took me lisa's ktl teaser picture and the lisa mentor video to get into blackpink and kpop in general
Hahahah true. For me the song very nice by seventeen was the catalyst to me being a Stan.
okay but Michael Microphone being a K-pop stan is such a win for humanity

i feel like liking kpop is always considered "cringey" (at least where im from in america) and it sucks bc i feel like if more ppl gave it a shot they would love it. its just such a fun unique experience that no other artists or forms of entertainment give u and im so glad i saw that one jennie fancam that led me to where i am today lol
Same. I'm in a country in Europe and here they just consider male K-pop artists too 'feminine'. Like wtf
same, people made it seem like it would be terrible and overhyped music but it’s actually so good, and the normal fans are such cool and fun people
in asian countries it's actually pretty popular (at least where I'm from)
@@vidhatrimysoor9385 yeah that makes sense, i'm sure its not considered "cringey" in asian countries but it kind of is in america which is annoying :(

As someone who discovered K-pop in like 2008, seeing yg not mentioned was mind blowing. Just shows how much the industry has changed. Lots of dark stuff from the past in K-pop for these idols. I think people who really look into it would quake at how crazy things could get with idols.
Yeah same! I've not been up to date with kpop for years now and it was so strange that yg or any of their groups weren't even mentioned. Also I really hope life for the idols has gotten a little better since mike didn't really mention the horrible conditions in the industry
True him talking about big 3 and not putting YG in that category shocked me a little. Nowadays, it's for sure SM and JYP and YG doesn't have that many artists anymore so I feel like it's being replaced by HYBE
There's literally no way he doesn't know about yg if he knows this much about kpop already. It's obvious he specifically excluded them and all their artists from the video because there is no way he listed the most popular kpop groups and missed blackpink. It's definitly not a coincidence. YG is still one of the giants in the industry no matter what he says lol
@@Agnes1322 I think it has but only for the big 3. They have no trainee debt, a higher chance of debuting, etc.
cause HYBE is objectively bigger than all the others and their groups are more popular right now

Its so crazy to see people viewing big hit (hybe) as one of the big three. I only got into kpop in 2017 but big hit was not even close to being as big (company wise) as the “big three” (originally meaning SM, JYP, and YG). Things changed so fast
Now it’s the big 4 and Cube is on its way up, it could make it if they started treating their idols better.
@@missserenity1090 uhm no. big3 is big3 it’s not about money and it will never change. also cube used to be what bighit/hybe are now. the non big3 company, but at the same level as the big3
It changed to the big 4 a while ago actually .
@@sparkle2848 by k-pop stans. It will remain big 3 + hybe. Hybe's big journey in such a small amount of time excels being put in a name such as the big4. Espically considering how much the industry and big3 have disrespected and underestimated bighit and bts.

It gets worse. I'm 27. The other day I bought some alcohol and they didn't ask for my ID. They're supposed to card everyone who looks younger than 40. I don't look 40 or at least upper 30s. Not this.
Surprised 2NE1 didn't play a role in this. I remember seeing the "I Am the Best" mv when it came out as it was all over youtube, and as a thirsty Gaga stan it fully hydrated me.

Forrealll, I feel like that's what makes Michael so entertaining and endearing to me. He basically only makes videos about things he is genuinely passionate about and while I'm pretty sure he does have some sort of script for his videos, it never feels like "scripted", more like an enthusiastic ramble sort of. For me it was Mamamoo that made me fall into the kpop rabid hole. They had such dynamic performances in the immortal songs show that I fell for them immediately. They're not the best dancers but watching them performing and enjoying gives me so much joy and energy I can't help it.
Me too. UA-cam automatically started playing a mamamoo playlist, and I fell from there
The only misconception I'd like to clear up is that they *are* good dancers. They have at least two competent dancers: Wheein and Moonbyul (especially Wheein with her effortlessly sharp movements). Solar and Hwasa are also catching up, and making up for any gaps aplenty with their charisma.
It was Mamamoo for me as well, via TWITTER OF ALL PLACES 😭
I think it was the Hip relay dance posted there without any context after a random tweet about Blackpink new album had appeared on my tl

Yeah this just made me realize how we might not have a big 4 chenge, but that YG actually needs to step it up if the don't want to be left behind as part of the first company wave or something like that! 😮
ikr when i heard big 3 i defo thought yg would be there, but there wasnt a single mention maybe yg really need to step up their game
@@dharling97 exactly. YG has been sooo big but they have to come up with something new, maybe they should move back to their roots when they did hip-hop mixed with punk/rock elements, like 2ne1‘s ugly or g-dragon‘s crooked. I really hope their new girl group is different from blackpink bcs if they aren‘t.. hm.. I think they‘ll be famous anyways just like itzy (being twice‘s little sisters) but I hope they‘ll be recognized for their music and fresh concept instead of being „blackpink‘s little sisters“
hes one of the lucky ones
@@orbitiny1117 yes i really wished yg's new girl group will be something new and unique. i understand that yg is about swag but i think they can still come up with something new and original. Hope girls will be treated well and given more freedom to participate in making music, choreographies, whatever they want. I think it adds more personality to the group
I would say that Kpop will find you at the right place and at the right time. It can't be forced and you'll never be prepared for it. Lmao! And once you get into this rabbit hole (at least for me), you will not only get to appreciate the particular group you stan but the entire Kpop industry as well and the journey of idols. It is literally everything earned, none given. The work ethic is almost Olympian-like. The dedication, the discipline that come with trying to chase that dream is just insane. And I have to admit this is the reason why I would so passionately defend Kpop against those who make fun of Kpop groups. The talent, skill and the journey are no joke.

The part about being "too many releases at the same time and it being overwhelming" is one of the reasons why the Kpop industry reached a saturation point in 2019-2020. A big chunk of its revenue comes from international sales/fans, so most labels have been surviving because of it, even if not many Kpop (idol) groups have had hits in Korea in the past 2 years. It seems with Brave Girls' comeback story it kinda opened the door for Koreans to be interested in groups again (mainly girlgroups), and it seems the debuts we've had recently (from gg's) have been successful. Let's see how things go in 2022.
*By "not having hits" I mean that we've only seen like 2 *huge* (inescapable) hits in 2021 (Rollin', that is from 2017, and Next Level), and even those didn't feel as "huge" as the biggest hits in 2009-2014 (for example). Going by Gaon's points/sales in Korea, neither was as big as "national hits" from a few years earlier. And also there's a lot more international tracks charting there than before (which also shows how the Korean general public moved on a little from Kpop). Anyway, glad you're into Kpop (specially girlgroups which are iconic
But korea itself was never the biggest consumers of kpop. Ballads, soloists, and trot are way bigger in korea
@@sophiam.krager3815 I mean it depends. Sure the ballad market in Korea is massive and is generally a bit older than the Kpop market. But up until 2019 there were plenty of Kpop artists that had huge hits in their home country and didn't depend on the international success as much as they do now. And trot is big (of course) but when it comes to the music charts (Gaon, both digital and albums) they don't dominate there. Even if their sources of revenue come from other places.
@@JordiVanderwaal but Generally we can agree that the korean regular people have different fast in music. One example is zicos any Song that was a huge Hit in korea and won over bigger better known groups compared to non korean fans who have completly different taste.
@@sophiam.krager3815 oh yeah I see what you mean now. Yes Koreans have a broader taste in music (if that makes sense), some of them may be into Kpop, a lot of them aren't. :P
This comment is 4 months old....I wonder what's OP's analysis with the current releases with the newest ggs going viral on the net and B.I releasing a banger ....did things change
As a 2nd gen stan it's so weird seeing new fans join the fandom. I really recommend you try to check out some older stuff just so you can know the journey that Kpop has been on and also where a lot of the current sounds started developing. I noticed when you mentioned the entertainment agencies you missed out some of the older groups still signed to those labels e.g. TVXQ and SHINee (the group that Taemin is a part of; he's not just a soloist) are both still signed to SM, while 2PM are also still signed to JYP (they just had a comeback).
My favourite KPop girl groups of all time will always be f(x), SNSD, Miss A, Kara and T-ara so I really recommend checking them out!
I am a new fan as of last year but agree that there is a gold mine of great art in the 2nd generation. As an older fan I find that era to be a bit more mature and to my tastes. Tara is one of my favorites along with SNSD, 2ne1, Girls day, Wonder girls, Spica, 9 muses, Sistar....there are a lot.
well you can’t be suprised when new stans join kpop for their fave group,,, if someone likes only one group leave it at that
omfg when he said "The Big 3" and then said SM, JYP and BigHit it felt like a slap in the face...... back in my day YG was part of The Big 3
i know right…times have changed lmao
Waitt, wdym it changed??!!?!? Damn, things really do change without we even noticing lmao-
@@s1bway it seems sudden cuz BigHit grew only because of BTS, whereas other companies have more groups so their names are attached to those groups and it seems like they're more talked about but when you look at the numbers it's a whole other thing
the term "big 3" also isnt what or who is the biggest company, it's the ones that started kpop itself, like the first people that invented the trainee system etc and that's SM, YG and JYP so yea :/
the big3 is still sm, yg and jyp, don’t worry haha

I’m currently 27 and fell into K-pop two years ago, COVID really pushed me over the edge… cause I literally couldn’t do anything lol I’m so glad I did tho, just like you said: it’s just fun! Girls Generation: The Boys and then straight to BlackPink was my gateway group.
My fave groups right now are: STAYC, Aespa, Billlie, Enhypen, TO1, ATEEZ… to name a few!
I highly recommend listening to the K-pop band: Lucy ( their song “Rolling Rolling” to start)
Omg to1 no one never mention them ! They're so cute
Omg I love Lucy too. You should also check out Onewe and Hoppipola... especially Hoppipola. Their songs make me so emotional 😭

the boys was my first kpop song when it came out!
Loona concept is a “girl of the month” concept where every month their company would introduce a new girl for the group (12 total). Every four girls they would introduce a subunit. This was all for their pre-debut, basically hyping up the members before they officially debuted. Since they have now debuted a few years ago, it’s unlikely that they are going to bring back the subunits - but not impossible.
Also, I too stan Girls Generation, as you should.
Let's manifest subunit releases. We need yeojin to have a subunit. The / in 1/3 is not enough ;-;
I’m pretty sure jinsoul hinted at new subunits, and the subunits being in the why not music video
Should also be mentioned that as the girls were being introduced one by one and into sub units, they would release a song with a MV as well.

Mike describing LOONA as one of the girls on top of the KPOP iceberg seriously gave me whiplash. WHAT HAPPENED WE WERE JUST IN THE TRENCHES YESTERDAY

Dreamcatcher, loona and onlyoneof are my favorites K-pop groups and honestly once on get into the rabbit hole there no way out and you start learning about a lot of underrated groups and the stan list just gets larger and larger
So I watched this video when it came out and I was like oh yeah cool I guess... but I just watched it again after experiencing my own K-pop journey age 28 and "hits different" doesn't even begin to describe my feelings.
When these groups are trained to be good at singing, rapping, acting, dancing, producing, have amazing MV quality (and are insanely beautiful people), its hard to go back to normal music since you get everything you can want in kpop, but more.
I have my phases... been a fan for about a decade and I still enjoy western music where there's a signature sound and songwriting is there. As someone who doesn't know Korean, songwriting isn't something I totally focus on with kpop. I enjoy the music coz its dawn good and the lyrics come after. With music in English, the lyrics come before.
yeah not with hip hop. And I'm not talking about the mainly mainstream western rappers. Kpop does try with rap but if you know true hip hop, you will know kpop does not do it justice. BTS does a great job but no way they're better than western MCs.
Although I'm into kpop for only the music I must say it has satisfied my bubblegum pop catchy music hunger to the T. I camt even. Twice is my ult fav.
I like your profile pic, it's cute

not too deep into k-pop groups in general but im a huge stay and honestly ever since i started listening to stray kids my life has improved in so many ways. its so easy for non-kpop fans to assume the worst because theyre a "product" but having them around they just gives someone a sense of comfort. especially knowing how hard they worked in the past to be acknowledged by the public in the first place. listening to their music and watching their videos, posts, etc. it feels like i got a friend i can always come back to without fearing to be judged. im not going to be delulu and pretend like i know their true identity or whatever but i just want to join them on the ride and see where it goes. may it be personal changes or choices i will root for them the same way they indirectly rooted for me all these years!

2015. Big Bang's "Bang Bang Bang" was trending. Watching the music video before school while getting ready. I am overwhelmed in the best possible way. I see there's a dance practice video of it. I start vibing with it. Scroll down and I'm seeing all these Kpop lyric videos. You know the ones. I find BTS Dope and quickly fall in love with BTS. Then I find Got7 Just Right, Exo Call Me Baby, and soooooo many memes surrounding these groups.
Entering Kpop at that time was so ideal. I remember getting excited for the debut music videos of Blackpink, when Twice and Stray Kids debuted, freaking out over the next BTS release especially when Fire first came out and then DNA, running to grab my earbuds when Got7 posted a new video of them talking or hanging out or when they dropped more music.
There were tons of other artists and songs I'd listen to, but to see how far groups like BTS, Blackpink, Exo, Got7 before splitting from JYP, Twice, etc. have come into global media and how much they've achieved, it makes me so happy!!!
it’s the way he told his journey into the ✨kpop wormhole✨ in the most nonchalant and *calm* voice that gets meee
mike saying "ice-spa" instead of aespa gave me whiplash
mans really said "ah-eh-spa"
Some fans tend to forget that kpop is still an industry that is out to get our every cent. So guys relax just enjoy your favs, dont start drama.
It was EXO Overdose for me and back then I had no-one to talk to about Kpop.
Fast forward to 2021, after many years of only stanning bg's, I have now fallen down the gg hole as well. I'm obsessed.. OBSESSED.
omg i am looking SO MUCH forward to a detailed kpop industry video
Not YG not being included in his “Big 3” companies list 🤣
Maybe if they let their artists out of the dungeon, they would still be in the big 3
@@pjuster2 truuee😆
i’m not sure but i think finically, they’re not in the big 3 anymore because they lost a lot of money
but in terms of almost everything else…sm, jyp, and yg will always remain the big 3
@Mute i don’t stan companies and nothing about my comments even stated i did.
For some reason I feel like a conversation between Michael Microphone and SHINee’s Kim Kibum would be the most entertaining thing ever.
OMG YESS
YES FJDJEJE
PLEASE WE NEED THIS
This is one of my favorite vids of yours. The tone. The pacing. The layout of the info. The poetic lilt to the script. The intensity of the edit. It's all so good!
My first exposure to K pop was Lucifer by Shinee and that was absolutely my cliff.
Okay but him putting loona on the same level as like red velvet, itzy, and twice is making me 🥺🥺 I'm so proud of how far they've come
makes me so happy as a oncebit
right??? i'm so proud to be an orbit and i'm so proud of the girls.

Zimzalabim guys, gals, and non binary pals.
i personally recommend dreamcatcher! they’re having a comeback this 30 july and they’re phenomenal. they’re amazing performers & singers, it could be that not every song is your cup of tea since they have more of a “rock” sound. i think they’re still a bit underrated even though they’re slowly growing but yeah i would recommend them! they deserve all the love
13:50. This made me snicker. Because my first thought was twice released more than 12 mvs and had like 100 albums in a 3 year period from 2017-2019. And this was only their Korean releases. They were doing the most during that time
Me, an adult woman who doesn’t stan anyone.
“Stream Criminal by Taemin”
Inhuman screaming.
Also, starting with SNSD? A man of culture.
'but professor what if æ gets hacked' was not a sentence i was expecting to ever come from mike's mouth but one gladly welcomed
Ive never been into Kpop but even I admit popstar by KDA fucking slaps and I have it saved on my phone since it came out
i completely agree with it being overwhelming knowing about/stanning a lot of groups. but the good thing is that you absolutely never run out of new content. songs, shows, videos, you name it, there's basically always something new. i barely have any days where there isn't a comeback from a group i know/stan at this point and i LOVE it. so once i get tired of a song i can move on to the next, and then rediscover a shit ton of old ones at one point and have a blast with them once again, and then it's just this big beautiful circle
Imagine your first kpop song you hear is "gee" by the legendary Girls Generation........ wow so lucky .

Yeah, I'm kind of annoyed he hasn't mentioned Mamamoo. I mean I'm still watching. Let's wait till the end.
i came here for the pll recaps and i found this gem, i love your channel so much more now
As an OG fan, though on and off, it's always fascinating to see new people get into Kpop. I could never recommend second gen groups enough though, 2008 to 2012 were golden years, I won't list them all but you're in for a treat. Hearing Teamin being referred to as a soloist is jarring though ngl
I feel like you’d really like these soloist girlies: Hyuna, Sunmi and Chungha! 😍 Their comebacks are amazing and I love how charismatic they are! Alsooo if you ever get into watching survival shows- those are a wild emotional ride. SIXTEEN where they form Twice is so 🥺🥺
BRUH HYUNA IS A BAD BITCH I love her so much

"Is Momo part of Yakuza?" oh lord he deep deep in the kpop life
except only white people pronounce it like 'yuh KOO zuh' which grates on my ears, maybe try saying 'YAH ku zah' it's really not that difficult. Japanese pronunciation is really easy to get close to correct. It's as bad as people pronouncing Harakiri like the name of baseball announcer Harry Carey (famously imitated by Will Ferrell)

No yeah I just recently, recently got into Kpop so I’m still learning but bts is my ult group easily. Favorite song would have to be Dionysus
Dionysus is a masterpiece, i want more bts songs with this kind of genre/style
YOU HAVE TATSE
Thank you for this intro video. I’m 25 and have know of k-pop and just never got around to getting into it and this has given some groups to check out. Plus also it’s nice to hear that the fan base really nice cause all I ever heard was that the fans were crazy.
Ps it’s kind of weird cause I’ve been a Kesha fan since I was young and I remember Devil Run. I specifically remember friends telling me it wasn’t her song the Korean group let her do an English version and there was drama cause they didn’t like how she did it. It’s really weird to hear that it was actually her song.

I really enjoy the rap and r&b side of kpop. I’m also into acoustic sounds and since I sing a lot I’m a sucker for pretty vocals..just to explain my style. So I totally suggest:
-ZICO
-AGUST D
-Baekhyun
-BIBI
-DEAN
-Chancellor
-Crush
-Taemin ((he is the whole industry))
-Stray Kids ((can we talk about Seungmins vocals lately?? And they are snatching up those awards! I’m so proud of them))
-I like Kim Woojin’s solo stuff. But I know he’s controversial.** (He was able to clear his name!) He has gone through a lot and his voice since debuting solo has gotten so amazing. His cover of “before you go” by Lewis Capaldi.. chefs kiss! **I know some people might come for me. But I don’t mind separating art from its creator if I need to.🤷🏼♀️

-Colde
-Day6
-Gaho
-EXO
-Kai
-Jeon Soyeon
